Story: Three To Tango
Author: Biichan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1436
Author's Summary: The true story of what happened on the way back to Paris. (Probably.)
Character/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana, Duggan
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced Because:

Duggan!

Okay, there are other reasons. For example, this fic is also hilarious, hot, and very well written. Biichan has nailed Four and Romana's condescending City of Death patter. Poor Duggan is obviously in way over his head, but he's not adverse to confusing circumstances. In fact, he seems rather to be enjoying them...

No, of course I haven't forgotten that I'm reccing here these two weeks - I'm just spreading them out a bit. Yes, that's right. Spreading them out. Clearly. Anyway, without further ado:

Story: Blood From A Very Tall Stone
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,416
Author's Summary: So, like, Romana and Duggan clearly liked each other in 'City Of Death'. This is the post-ep fic about how the Doctor was like really jealous or something. Can the epic timelove be saved? Will K-9 survive? What happens to the cups of tea that vanish early on in the story?
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None that I can think of

Recced because: Well, as may have become embarrassingly clear based on some of my earlier reccing spells, I'm more than a bit partial to a bit of Four/Romana, especially Four/Romana II, and even more especially when it evokes the spirit of those gloriously silly Season 17 stories as well as this does.

File this one under the by now bulging dossier of fics I can't believe hadn't already been recced on the comm. I mean, it's a really good fic by a well-known member of the LJ Whofic community and it seems like years since I first read it (five years in fact, from the timestamp on the review I left over on Teaspoon), so it would seem to be a shoe-in for having already been brought up here. In fact I was fairly sure it had been, but it turns out not.

The idea of a Romana/Duggan "thing" during City of Death, and of imagining the Doctor's reaction afterwards seems by now to be a well-worn path for Four-ficcers to take, although it's always interesting to see the different takes on it. For my money, this is one of the very best versions out there, and what really makes it work is the dialogue. Sparkling, I believe is the word for it. Every other line is a zinger. Those wonderfully absurdist word-games that the Doctor and Romana managed to veer into at the most unlikely moments, rendered here with incredible fidelity to the original source material. It's a bit of a cliché to observe when praising dialogue in fanfic that you can hear the original actors saying the words, but I really can when I read this. And as I know from bitter experience, unless you're a genuine comedic genius like Douglas Adams (and who of us is?) writing that stuff even reasonably well is hard. So hats off, really, to anybody who can do it as seamlessly as in this fic.

So yes, if Four/Romana is your thing, then this is the real deal. 24 carat stuff. Go and check it out and leave a word or two of appreciation.

Story: Breaking Eggs

Author: Spikewriter

Rating: Teen

Word Count: 3318

Author's Summary: "You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs." "If you made an omelette, I'd expect to find a pile of broken crockery, a cooker in flames and an unconscious chef!" What if Romana had asked Duggan to come along at the end of "City of Death?"

Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II, Duggan

Warnings: None

Recced because:

“City of Death” is one of my favorite classic Who stories, and Duggan is one of my favorite minor characters.  This is just a fun look at what it would have been like for him to travel with Four and Romana.  Predictably he picks fights, bashes people, and nearly causes an interstellar incident.  The dynamic between Four and Romana with him onboard is interesting too.

Story: Incident in a Parisian Cafe
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2220
Author's Summary: When deciding how to kill time during a night out adventuring in Paris, asking yourself "what would James Bond do?" is probably the wrong approach. Missing scene from City of Death (Romana/Duggan).
Characters/Pairings: Romana II/Duggan
Warnings: None

Recced because: Any author who manages to take a somewhat cracky premise, carry it through and create a fic that is both funny and enjoyable has written a good fic. Any author who manages to do all that, and somehow keep everyone completely in character throughout, has written a great fic. And that's what this is: a great fic that is both very funny and weirdly plausible. In a missing scene from "City of Death," Romana and Duggan "do it," but it's the conversation that follows their brief liaison that is absolutely priceless.

Story: The Protectionals!
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1222
Author's Summary: A forgotten classic from the 1981 television schedules, unfortunately as yet unreleased on DVD; only read this if you think you can handle the action; Duggan! Benton! The Protectionals!
Characters/Pairings: Duggan, Benton, Other characters
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because:
Anyone who has even vague memories of either Starsky and Hutch or The Professionals, depending on what side of the Pond you grew up on, will recognise the cliches being skewered here; namely, a lot of early eighties cops with cool cars and bad perms, one of whom has a 'hit things first and don't bother about the asking questions part' and the other who provides a 'vaguely cool-headed voice-of-mild-reason thing'. And they're skewered hilariously. And what gets me most of all is that this actually fits into the Whoniverse quite well; I suspect I'd actually rather see this than some of the spin-offs we did get...

Story: I Took The One Less Travelled By
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere / Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2433
Author's Summary: AU where it's Romana rather than Jack who ends up living through the twentieth century with Torchwood.
Characters/Pairings: Romana/Duggan

Recced because:  This is a lovely fic that rounds up the best Earth-based supporting characters of season 17 -- Duggan from "City of Death", Chris and Clare from "Shada" and turns them into a fairly shambolic alien-fighting team.  Not that it's particularly cracksome, although there are flashes of humour.  The Time War has left Romana trapped on Earth with a broken time ring, and now she's running Torchwood 3 with her little team, and resisting the temptation of the Rift.  It's the perfect set-up, and I'd gladly read a whole series set in this universe.

Warnings: nope

Recced because: These are simply amazing. They just might be my favorite thing in all of Who fan fiction, and I don't say that lightly. I don't know how she does it, but [livejournal.com profile] livii manages to pack so much into these little stories. Entire worlds and relationships and so much emotion in tiny snapshots. And I really think there is something for everyone here. Whatever pairings or characters you prefer, whether you enjoy angst or humor or action, it's all there. And the best part is, it looks like she is going to continue to update the masterlist as she writes more of these ficlets, so bookmark this page, people!

(PS. As an added bonus, Benton stars in a number of the stories and she writes him fabulously.)

here's a taste from my most favorite of the ficlets... )

Story: Learn How To Be You In Time
Author: LizBee
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: "No one you can save that can't be saved." Written for the chuchontime prompt: "Romana is in need of some muscle. Duggan has conditions."
Characters/Pairings: Romana II/Duggan
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~1,300 words

Recced because: Oh, my soul. This is a gorgeous piece, bringing back the marvellous Duggan from City of Death, and throwing him and Romana into the Year That Never Was. Time Lords aren't easy people to know, but Duggan, with his big heart and good faith, tries his best, and between romance in shattered cafes, proposals involving piles of rocks, death, and rewinding, this manages to be heart-breakingly beautiful while also funny and insightful. "I'd forgotten you were crazy," Duggan says, and he must be crazy to deal with some of the things that come his way from knowing Romana, but somehow, these two crazy kids make it work.
