Your reccer for the next two weeks is Styrofoam monster on Teaspoon; I'll be posting on their behalf.

Story: Naked People
Author: Pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 4,956
Characters: Tosh
Summary: Tosh finds confidence in the shape of a little rust-colored dress, and sees a side of herself that she'd like to keep. Slight AU (confident Tosh).
Warnings: none

Recced because: Tosh doesn't get enough love. The summary calls this story a slight AU, but it's that kind of AU that is so close to reality you can see it, and far enough that you feel its loss when you finish reading. Tosh is gorgeous and smart, and here she starts to realize it. The structure is excellent, composed of Tosh's interactions with not just her co-workers but also some very well-drawn OCs. Tosh's inner-doubts and struggles ring painfully true, as she explains to a girl much like herself just how she feels sitting in a bar: "You came here because it was better than going home and staring at the television and now you just wish you were home watching anything at all, because at least you wouldn't be paying seven quid a drink for the privilege."

The story is about self-confidence, self-doubt, and self-esteem. It's heart-warming and just a little bit tragic.

Author's Summary: "The Doctor recalls the Corsair"
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, the Corsair
Warnings: None

Recced because: First of all, I should note that any episode about the TARDIS and written by Neil Gaiman will automatically be one of my favorites. And then when someone takes a little snippet of that episode and extends it...well, then you get something like this lovely fic. The characterization of the Doctor and Amy is gorgeous, but what struck me most was the description of the Corsair--how a character only briefly mentioned came alive in the most wonderfully ridiculous and (in context) tragic way. This fic walks a line between humor and sadness that, really, is the essence of the Doctor, and it does so incredibly well. Read it for the squirrel, if nothing else. (Trust me, it'll make sense later.)

My penultimate rec is, like my ultimate one, for a Big Bang fic!

Story: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road
Author: pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 23849
Author's Summary: Years after her adventures in the TARDIS, Martha Jones is haunted by the Doctor as she investigates an alien crash site.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th)

Recced because: It's a thoughtful and occasionally moving look at Martha, Mickey and Jack years after their travels with the Doctor. It shows Martha at her best: clever, compassionate, thoughtful and occasionally stubborn. (And I adore the idea of Martha treating humans who're stupid enough to get alien headcolds because they don't take sufficient precautions!)

Glancing up from her notes as she stands at the podium, Martha glimpses brown hair and a blue-suited shoulder. After her dream that morning, she immediately thinks Doctor, her breath catching in her throat.

She tells herself that blue suits and brown hair aren't especially uncommon. Besides, the Doctor she knew is gone: years ago, she and Mickey intercepted the UNIT reports of a new regeneration spotted. And she'd known even before that, hadn't she? Known it in her heart that he was dying when she saw him last, known it like she had been punched in the gut.

She fusses with her notes until she's recomposed herself, and when she looks up, there's no Doctor, just a dozen dozen restless faces, staring up at her.

From travelling the galaxy to defending the Earth to hunting aliens to this, she thinks, scanning the room. Working for herself under the banner of Jones Xenobiological Consulting, Martha's in high demand in the field of xenopathology, though she finds most of this plays out as treating people who've caught alien head colds (and the odd STD--she doesn't ask) from investigating crash-landed artifacts.

Story: Handyman
Author: pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,952
Author's Summary: Donna's begun having terrible headaches, and Shaun struggles to help her.
Characters/Pairings: Donna/Shaun, Wilf, Sylvia
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is one of the sweetest, most poignant Donna fix-it fics I've read, not in the least because it finally gives us a good idea of who Shaun might be, and why Donna would have fallen for him. Shaun is utterly devoted to Donna, and when she starts freezing up and repeating words like "neurohyperbolicencephalostabilizer," he finds a way to help her that no doctor (or Doctor) could. Ultimately, it isn't just Shaun's cobbled-together machine that restores Donna's memories: it's his fierce love for her, and his unwillingness to give up despite his fears and uncertainty.
