Author's Summary: The true story of what happened on the way back to Paris. (Probably.)
Character/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana, Duggan
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced Because:

Duggan!

Okay, there are other reasons. For example, this fic is also hilarious, hot, and very well written. Biichan has nailed Four and Romana's condescending City of Death patter. Poor Duggan is obviously in way over his head, but he's not adverse to confusing circumstances. In fact, he seems rather to be enjoying them...

Story: Mondays with Sarah Jane

Author's Summary: In which Chrissie Jackson learns how to save the world without needing high heels.
Characters/Pairings: Chrissie Jackson/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I only watched a little of the Sarah Jane Adventures, but the awesomeness of this story extends beyond my brief canon knowledge. If you're similarly unfamiliar, here's all you need to know: The premise is that Sarah Jane saves the world with the assistance of a bunch of kids. Chrissie Jackson is the mother of one of those kids - she doesn't know much about aliens, but she has managed to save the world with her high heels. Also she never remembers Sarah Jane's name. This fic goes from that basis into the future, with a bunch of cameos from other characters and aliens and a cute developing relationship between Chrissie and Sarah Jane.

Author's Summary: "Loch Ness is in Scotland,” said Luke. “I don't think we have time to get there and back and still get up for school tomorrow morning.”
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, UNIT
Warnings: None
Recced because: For my final choice I wanted my all-time favourite characters, the Third Doctor and Sarah Jane but made a mistake in the search and this popped out. And having read it I decided I could manage without the Doctor for the sake of the Loch Ness Monster, some excellent character studies, and another glimpse of the Brigadier.

Author's Summary: The word you're looking for is "ontological paradox."
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you've read the Heinlein story "All You Zombies," you know exactly where Biichan's take on it is going from the start ... but that won't hinder your enjoyment of it, not one bit. Re-casting this classic time paradox story with Seven and Ace works perfectly, and allows Seven to manipulate his companion as never before. It's exactly the sort of mind-bending twistiness a time-travel series should be getting up to, and probably would be if Doctor Who weren't considered a family show.

Author's summary: Johnny and the TARDIS make music together.
Characters/Pairings: John Chesterton, the TARDIS, Barbara, Ian, Ten, Tegan
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~1,500

Recced because: This is a terrific example of a remix that really works. The original is Tigerkat's excellent Listening (previously recced on Calufrax here). This story is a wonderful, lovely take on the original, teasing out different aspects and full of lightness and love. The different POVs on display – the TARDIS' in particular, but also little Johnny and Tegan's – are perfectly done, and the story is full of great little details, like the TARDIS' joy at the new life being created inside her, the moon landing get-together/reunion (especially "Aunt Dodobird"!), and even the Inferno gets a mention. It's touching and terrific work.

Author's summary: If you fall in love with someone pretending to be someone else, are you in love with them or the person they're pretending to be? S3 AU.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Romana, Seven, K9
Warnings: None

Recced because: For some reason, Martha seems to be the new school companion shipped with the most old school characters. And one of the popular femslash pairings for her (along with Martha/Ace, which I could easily have recced an entire week for by itself, to be completely honest) is with Romana. [livejournal.com profile] biichan's take on it (again from this year's [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon) is lovely and does something very interestingly different: it's an alternate S3, with the alternateness coming from Romana having been the one to survive the Time War, not the Doctor. What follows from there is a really clever set of inversions of and counterpoints to canon, not just Martha's journey in S3 but all sorts of other bits as well. It's a succession of fantastic moments, by turns funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and inducing pure punch-the-air fannish glee. A wonderful fic.

Author's Summary: Jamie just wants to have a quiet drink. The Doctor knows more than he's letting on.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Second Doctor/Jamie.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Two and Jamie are just absolutely spot-on. This was written for LGBT fest this year and I think Two and Jamie's reactions to the Stonewall riots are just superb. [livejournal.com profile] biichan has both their voices down perfectly and the Doctor trying to explain being gay and how it's different from the two of them is just not to be missed, plus it's incredibly, incredibly sweet.

(And that's me done for the week. Sorry to cram them all in at the last minute and I'm sorry my reasons for reccing weren't as well-thought out as usual. Hope you've checked them out and enjoyed them anyway! :))

Recced because: It's so rare to find good characterisation for Charley, so I was delighted to stumble across this little gem. It charts Charley's slow tranformation into a citizen of the 21st century, and it's beautifully done, with just the right amount of bittersweet.

Story: The Miseducation of Romanadvoratrelundar (or Two Cobblemice in One Snug Hole)

Word Count: 857
Author's Summary: His future self's words were blunt and to the point: “Seduce Romanadvoratrelundar.”
Characters/Pairings: Irving Braxiatel, Romana I, Braxiatel/Romana I
Warnings: Slight spoilers for Gallifrey: Lies.

Recced because: I had another rec lined up for today, but I read this this morning and knew immediately that I was going to rec this instead. It has absolutely spot-on perfect characterization for both Romana and Braxiatel and makes the pairing and the fact that it could have happened this way feel not only plausible, but undeniable. Simple, direct and very funny, it's another fic that has instantly entered my personal canon. Which seems to be my theme for this week. ;) If you've listened to the Big Finish Gallifrey audio series, you really do need to read this!

Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love pocket-watch stories and I love Big Finish and this story manages to combine the two fantastically. Awesome, awesome theory and it's incredible how many good lines are packed in to so few words. I really sort of wish this were canon. Everyone's voice sounds just right, especially Leela's. This one's a must if you like the Big Finish series Gallifrey but is still heaps of fun even if you're not familiar with it, I think.

Story: Space Between

Author's summary: On an out-of-the-way alien planet, Susan and her grandfather find someone they never thought they'd see again.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/the Rani, Susan
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,450 words

Recced because: This is frankly brilliant: it's hilarious and well-written, with a great plot, and also manages to get in all sorts of terrific little bits of fanon that I loved about Gallifrey, Time Lords, and that band of rogues the Doctor ran with. One and Susan meet up with Susan's granny once again, now ruling over a planet in exile, as imperious and brilliant as always. We get Susan backstory, the Rani causing Susan's interest in and stay on Earth, meeting people in the wrong order, some well-deserved (and tasteful!) getting it on for One, and I even enjoyed the reference to the Looms, for goodness' sake. Rassilon approves.

Marvellous Martha Jones

I'm recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week but they're not all Martha/Ten.

I posted this recommendation yesterday but it seems to have disappeared, so I'm making two recommendations today to make up for it.

Story: The Wake
Author: Biichan
Author Summary: Martha visits The Wheel in the aftermath of the Cybermen.
Characters: Martha Jones, Zoe Herriot
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 940

Recced because: This is a sweet and gentle tale with a vein of humour in which Martha continues to be her usual compassionate self, despite a long lifetime of dealing with aliens:
Martha slept fitfully on the rocket ship. Space travel was not a new sensation to her–she'd been to her first alien planet while still at university and to many more since then–but it had been a much more advanced ship that had first ferried her across the void of stars. Not a human ship–which were still crude and ungainly things more than a century after the Apollo Project–but an alien vessel: a living ship that traveled through time and space at the flick of a switch and the turn of a dial.

Earth's rocket ships, she was given to understand, tended to get where they were going more often.

Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Evelyn Smythe, Harry Sullivan, Hex Schofield, Sarah Jane Smith, Tegan Jovanka, Vislor Turlough, The Master (Delgado), Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I know it's probably cheating a bit, since this story was actually written for me in a ficathon, but it really is one of my favorites. I absolutely adore it, and I just couldn't pass up the chance to point people in its direction.

It's actually a series of five short snapshots in time, each one featuring a different incarnation of the Doctor and his various companions. One of the things that I adore about this story is that it features such a variety of companions, including several from the Big Finish audios who aren't seen in fanfiction nearly enough. (Evelyn! Hex!) It's hilarious at some points, bittersweet at others, and everyone is very much in character.

Story: Together, On This Same Earth
Author: Biichan ([livejournal.com profile] biichan)
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3891
Author's Summary: Once you've started traveling in time and space, things are never quite the same when you stop. Luckily, Victoria's new friend Martha understands this.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield/Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Barbara Wright, Polly Wright
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story, set during Ten and Martha's 1969 sojourn in "Blink," is a powerful look at how travelling with the Doctor changes people's lives. I love stories about the afterlives of companions, and Victoria is an especially good subject for one, since she's chosen to stay in a time not her own. Biichan writes Victoria extremely well, keeping her of her time while showing her growth as she explores the new possibilities of the twentieth century.

Victoria/Martha is not a pairing I would ever have expected to work, but it absolutely does. Biichan develops the emotional connection between them slowly and plausibly. (By the way, although adult-rated, the story's one sex scene is not at all graphic. You should be able to enjoy this story even if explicit f/f slash isn't your thing.)

Another delightful aspect of the story is its reunion of several companions from the First and Second Doctor's eras. They reminisce, naturally, and it's all great fun for the reader. "Together, On This Same Earth" has its sober side, however. 1969 isn't paradise, and neither, as Victoria and Martha both know, is the future. One of the things I really like about this story is its attentiveness to to the darker side of Doctor Who, and especially the emotional toll that all those monsters and near-apocalypses might take on a companion. Which isn't to say it's depressing--the story really captures the enthusiasm for life which has always been an important part of Doctor Who.
