Story: Ten Months from December 30th, 1999
Author: Gallifrey Immigrant
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 420
Author's Summary: In hindsight, the choices always feel different.
Characters/Pairings: Grace Holloway, Eighth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I loved this story and couldn't wait to rec it the moment I read it. It's such a fantastic introspection story on Grace's feelings and thoughts months after she had declined to travel with the Doctor. This fic really portrays some great depth in a sometimes overlooked character, especially a could-have-been companion like Grace.

Author's Summary: The Doctor and Grace get into a tricky situation during a chemistry experiment.

Recced because: This story is eloquent and has just the right mix of humor and romance that works perfectly for this particular Doctor.

Hello! I'm new to reccing but I love all things Doctor Who.

Story: Memories With No Beginning
Author: Irish Bad Wolf
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 556
Author's Summary: In another reality, the Doctor has a normal life and a family.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (AU!8th)/Grace Holloway
Warnings: None

Recced because: Based on an alternate universe from the Doctor Who Magazine comics in which the Eighth Doctor marries Grace, this fic gives an interesting (and rather sweet) look into this reality.

Story: Christmas Cutaway
Author: Calapine
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1232
Characters/pairings: Eighth Doctor, Grace Holloway
Author's summary: Too much sugar in your tea: the Doctor and Grace at Christmas

Recced because: We could all use some Christmas-themed fluff at Christmas. This one is actually as thoughtful as it is cozy, being a conversation over Christmas dinner between Eight and Grace. (The author lists it as romance, and there's a small kiss, but there's nothing especially shippy about it, and it could easily be read as platonic too.) They talk about silly things and serious things, and the third-person present tense gives us Grace's down-to-earth POV, but with a somewhat dreamy quality, which works well for a story featuring the dreamy, enigmatic Eighth Doctor. A nice stand-alone vignette to warm a winter evening.

Story: The Gift
Author: Kittenmommy
Rating: all ages
Word count: 106
Characters/pairings: Eighth Doctor, Grace Holloway
Author's summary: Grace gives the Doctor a gift that he doesn't really want.

Recced because: Drabbles are as hard to get right as longer stories, and this one is a clever idea that manages to be funny and capture the essence of Eight and Grace's interactions in just a few sentences. It left me with a smile on my face, so go read it and you'll smile too. :)

Story: Unless, Perhaps, Someday, A War
Author: haveloved
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6,080
Author's Summary: She has realized since that forever is fragile. Forever can be taken away. But the fight cannot be taken out of Rose Tyler. Rose, as the dimension cannon is built and she finds herself working through the Doctor's timeline and trying to figure out what exactly is the mystery behind Donna Noble.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Pete Tyler, Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th), Rory Williams, The Doctor (8th), Grace Holloway
Warnings: Mild Swearing

Recced because: The quotation that gives the title its name sets the tone for the story:
“Probably we’ll die without ever seeing each other again.”
“Yes, probably. Unless, perhaps, someday, a war…”
- Hiroshima, Mon Amour

It is war and destruction that brings Rose Tyler back, not her belief in forever, but it is because of who she is that she comes back at all. One of the wonderful things to me about Doctor Who is its concern with who we are--the people we choose to be and the people we become through the choices we make, often in impossible situations. We cannot control the world around us or what other people choose, much of the time, but what we can choose is how we respond. It is these choices that make us who we are, and when everything else is so fragile, perhaps that is what matters the most.

Rose knows this already by the time she gets trapped in the parallel world--indeed, it is perhaps the reason she does get trapped in a parallel world--but when she returns, years have passed for her, and she has grown and changed yet again.
This fic bridges the gap between the Rose Tyler we last saw saying good-bye to the Doctor on Bad Wolf Bay and the Rose Tyler who uses the dimension cannon to get back to the Doctor. I have always been fascinated by dimension cannon stories and by what Rose must have experienced en route to her return and how she must have changed, and this is my very favorite.

Story: Wary
Author: Maria Law
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3536
Author's Summary: On a cold night in November, Grace Holloway meets the one person she never thought to meet again. The Doctor is lonely and looking to make a connection. Can the two of them sort things out?
Character/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Grace Holloway
Warnings: None
Recced Because:

Much has been written under the "Nine visits an old friend after the Time War" theme. It's one of those well-loved tropes that can fuel a thousand fics (and more) without getting old. Of those thousands of fics, however, this is the only one I know of that features Nine getting brained with a zucchini.

There's also great characterization, zesty dialogue, and lush descriptions.Wary manages to strike a balance between well-handled Time War angst and moments of laugh-out-loud funny, without feeling disjointed. The result is a great fic that takes angst and makes it bright without making it trivial. I hope it brightens your day too.

Story: Beyond the Veil
Author: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1827
Author’s Summary: The Tenth Doctor discovers that his song isn't ending: it's just leaving to join in a greater melody, above and beyond death itself. Oneshot of various pairings and much joy.
Characters/Pairing: 1st Doctor and Susan Foreman, 2nd Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon, 3rd Doctor and Jo Grant, 4th Doctor and Romana, 5th Doctor and Vislor Turlough, 6th Doctor and Peri Brown, 7th Doctor and Ace McShane, 8th Doctor and Grace Holloway, 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler, 10th Doctor and Donna Noble, 11th Doctor and River Song, 12th Doctor and Michael, 13th Doctor and Inez
Warnings: Just for feels, folks.

Recced because: An interesting look at Time Lord afterlife. What happens to the Doctor we know and love when he regenerates? AceOnGallifrey posits the lovely theory of Timeheart and what it’s like, and if you’re not trickling a tear or two by the time you’re done reading it, then I’d be surprised.

Story: Awkward Questions
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 996
Author's Summary: Not even the Doctor can answer everything.
Characters:Adric, Grace Holloway, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Nyssa, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)

Recced because:It's a play on the numerous (intentional) plot holes and is-it-canon-or-not-canon-questions all Whovians have to deal with at some point. With fifty years of series, not everything always makes sense. Two events from the history of the show can completely contradict each other and still both be awesome (a big cheer for timey-wimey stuff!). This fic takes that fact and runs with it, exploring 8 different scenes from Doctors 1 to 8 with humour and wit. The scenes used here are (in)famous throughout the fandom, and reading about them brought a knowing smile to my face. It's under a thousand words, so even if you're in a hurry, check it out. And if you like it, there is a sequel too!

Story: Logical Consequences
Author: Bex
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2639
Author's Summary: Did Grace Holloway really think there'd be no repurcussions from the events of New Year's Eve, 1999?
Characters/Pairings: Grace Holloway, Eighth Doctor.
Warnings: None. (Unless possible spoilers for the TV Movie count?)

Recced because: Some of Grace’s actions from that night catch up with her (i.e. technically assaulting a police officer). Cue the reappearance of the Doctor, more decisions, and a get out of jail free card. I do like fanfics that take some of the wildly waving loose ends of canon and use them to good effect, and this fic is a great example.

It’s (as it says on the tin) logical, humorous, the Doctor is especially well characterised and it's a joy from start to finish. Even if the TVM isn’t your favourite bit of DW, this is sure to make you smile.

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6792
Author's Summary: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side."
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Author's Summary: Introspection post-TV Movie. The Doctor has this problem, see, where he cannot ever let go or give up on anyone. It'll be the end of him one day.
Characters/Pairings: Eight, Grace
Warnings: Spoilers for the TVM

Post TVM, Grace lingers a little longer in order to get the details of what exactly happened, and the Doctor tells her a bit about the Master. The author does an excellent job in fitting the relationship we saw between the Eight and Roberts!Master during the TVM into the general flow of all that's gone before, and allows the Doctor all the complex emotions we would imagine him having after the events of the movie.

Story: Fallacy Somewhere (Or: If You Can't Steal a Coat from Gilbert and Sullivan, Then From Which 19th Century Librettists and Composers Can You Steal a Coat?)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,871
Author's Summary: You know, I acquired that ulster from Gilbert and Sullivan. –The First Doctor, "Edge of Destruction."
Characters/Pairings: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Susan, Jamie, Jo, Romana II, Nyssa, Tegan, Ace, Grace, Rose, Jack, Donna
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, this will make you laugh and laugh. Even if you aren't a G&S fan (and why not, for heaven's sake?), this is still a witty and very funny story about multiple Doctors causing coat-related chaos for the composer and librettist. The story is crammed full of references both obvious and sly to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler helpfully includes an extra chapter of author's notes in case you miss a few of the jokes.

Story: A Second Coming
Author: TigerKat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1674
Author's Summary: Grace Holloway never expected to see the Doctor again. Certainly not like this. Starring Ten, Martha, Donna and Grace. Spoilers for third season and fourth season casting.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Donna, Martha and Grace
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This was actually written before S4 aired, so I guess you can take it as AU. Still, the interaction between Martha and Donna is spot on and makes me suspicious of the author's possible clairvoyant abilities. That and I'm just a sucker for past companions meeting current ones. :)

Will be posting my last rec after I get back from the early Christmas my family is doing today. A Hartnell probably. Yes, Hartnell will do nicely...

Characters/pairings:  Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Grace Holloway, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Rose Tyler
Warnings:  none
Recced because:
I love sweeping, elegiac Time War fics that make me cry.  This is not one of those fics, but it’s magnificent in a different way.

It’s almost time for the Doctor to end the Time War, but he’s busy seizing the day in ways that are sweet, silly, and very much the Doctor.  The fic conveys the weight of the terrible event that is to come, but it’s hopeful too.  The scene that explains how he found the wisdom to not just sit around being emo is perfect in every way.

Author's Summary: She would have always wanted *more*.
Characters/Pairings: Grace, Eight, Jack
Warnings: None given

Recced because: This is a wonderful character study of Grace, one of the most underrated companions. Jack's brief appearance is a lovely foil to Grace, and Aces writes all three characters skillfully and tenderly. I can't read it without getting a lump in my throat by the end.

Story: Smile Like You Mean It
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: At the end, the Doctor didn't leave.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/Grace Holloway, the Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: Grace Holloway is never going to win any Most Popular Companion contests, but I always enjoy watching her respond to the Doctor's TARDIS invitation with, "You come with me!" In this story the Doctor does exactly that, and the slow mutual realization of how wrong they are for each other no matter how hard they try makes for painful, sad and fascinating reading. Even if the TV movie made you dyspeptic (nobody could blame you), this story will show you another side of Grace's character and her conflicted, sometimes contentious relationship with the Doctor. To be read when in the mood to indulge in a good bout of melancholy.
