And now for something completely different.

Story: Letters From an Unhinged Mind
Author: rollingstone
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 395
Author's Summary: The Doctor writes two letters: an apology to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a reprimand for stolen jellybabies.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor

Recced because: The best crack!fic is that fic that, while undeniably cracky, is also somehow perfectly in character. The premise of these letters is ridiculous, but I can still "hear" Four perfectly nonetheless, lecturing Obi-Wan and upbraiding the jellybaby thief. I was giggling by the third sentence, and didn't stop all the way through.

I'm terribly sorry for stealing your lightsaber. In hindsight, I realize that, as a Time Lord, I have little use for such a tool, as I tend to favor diplomacy over force anyway. But my immense brain, far superior to your feeble one, overtook pragmatism, and I found I desired to understand such a tool. I hope you'll forgive my theft, particularly given that it was done only to further my expansive and immutable search for knowledge. I intended to return it just as soon as I examined its internal structure and means of application.

However, was it really necessary to set my scarf aflame?

Story: Memories Are Killing
Author: rollingstone
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1977
Author's Summary: Shortly after the Time War, the Doctor decides to visit an old friend.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: This was one of the first stories I read on Teaspoon, and it remains one of my favorites. The newly regenerated Ninth Doctor needs to say goodbye to his former, more carefree life, and so he spies on an old and very dear friend, Sarah Jane (who is pre-School Reunion when he finds her). The story is poignant, perfectly capturing the Doctor's feelings of loneliness and loss, and it leaves a bit of an ache -- but it's a good ache.

Story: On The Edges Of Time
Author: rollingstone
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1096
Author's summary: There are days the Doctor has, and some he can only wish he had.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Susan, Jamie, Jo, Sarah Jane, Romana, Ace
Warnings: none, really

Recced because: It gives us a glimpse of emotional life of the Seventh Doctor--the man behind the mastermind, if you will--and it does it beautifully. Through a series of short vignettes, rollingstone lets the Doctor interact with his past companions in the classic Five Things That Never Happened fashion and then tops it all off with an absolutely perfect scene with Ace. Throughout the fic, rollingstone has an absolute knack to capturing the mood of a scene. The Seventh Doctor is similarly well-captured in both sides of his dual nature: clownish at one moment, deadly serious in the next.

Plus, the world needs more fics where the Seventh Doctor invites Romana to come dancing and offers to play the spoons for her.

Story: More than Just a Memory
Author: rollingstone
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2724
Author's Summary: And so he tells you now, because he's never told anyone: Sarah Jane is dead.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Other Doctors, Sarah Jane
Warnings: None Given

Recced because: This is a gentle recollection of Sarah Jane, a flash of memory in a life full of people who are always leaving. The author might flirt with melodrama a bit, but also paints a vivid picture with a melancholy style, and still captures the wonder and innocence that is at the heart of all of the best of the Doctor's companions.

Snippet )

That we can see ahead from the memory he chooses to Sarah's abrupt abandonment sharpens the blow, because we know that Sarah will have to live her words in this story more than just saying them, and both trust and forgive the Doctor for not being able to truly say goodbye. This piece gives us a glimpse of a Sarah Jane who can do just that, even as it gives us a glimpse of a Doctor who can finally let himself let her go.
