Marvellous Martha Jones

I'm recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week but they're not all Martha/Ten.

I posted this recommendation yesterday but it seems to have disappeared, so I'm making two recommendations today to make up for it.

Story: The Wake
Author: Biichan
Author Summary: Martha visits The Wheel in the aftermath of the Cybermen.
Characters: Martha Jones, Zoe Herriot
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 940

Recced because: This is a sweet and gentle tale with a vein of humour in which Martha continues to be her usual compassionate self, despite a long lifetime of dealing with aliens:
Martha slept fitfully on the rocket ship. Space travel was not a new sensation to her–she'd been to her first alien planet while still at university and to many more since then–but it had been a much more advanced ship that had first ferried her across the void of stars. Not a human ship–which were still crude and ungainly things more than a century after the Apollo Project–but an alien vessel: a living ship that traveled through time and space at the flick of a switch and the turn of a dial.

Earth's rocket ships, she was given to understand, tended to get where they were going more often.

I've been recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week and here is my final recommendation - and this time it's a Martha/Ten fic.

Story: Shredded
Author: parrotfish
Author Summary: Past actions bring consequences that are not easy to face. But for the Doctor and Martha, It's a chance to clear the air. "What do you want me to say? That I forgive you?"
Characters: Martha Jones, The Doctor
Rating: Adult
Word count 2455

Recced because: Parrotfish writes beautifully, and her stories about Ten and Martha are very well-observed, and frankly, she should be encouraged to write more !

This is a post-Season 3 fic in which Martha makes good use of her UNIT and Torchwood connections to save the Doctor (yet again) and they come to a new understanding:
The Doctor felt a thread in the complex web of his universe go slack, cut suddenly and hanging loose, death removing it from the pattern of all living things.
Strong hands lifted him, and he shivered as they carried him, dripping with water and blood, and laid him on dry, hard ground.
A face appeared before him, serene and dark, and he was sure he was delirious, because it was more than he deserved.
"What..?" he gasped through bloody teeth.
"Don't try to talk. You're going to be all right," she said in her reassuring way.
He knew it really was Martha Jones in the moment before everything went black.

It's possible the ending will make you melt, and if you like this, be sure to read the sequel: In the Dark (which is even more melting in my view !)

Story: We've Seen It In The Movies (Now Let's See If It's True)
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1833
Author's Summary: Clyde and Luke drive to Wales and talk about girls. And boys. And pants.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Luke Smith (Clyde/Luke pre-slash)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's very funny! I defy you not to giggle whilst reading this story. It also captures beautifully the warmth of the show itself - the depth of affection between the main characters really shines through. The characterisation is excellent, Clyde's voice is spot on, and Doyle manages to suggest four years of friendship with only a few lines.
Plus, there's a blink and you'll miss it Torchwood joke that it took me an embarrassing number of reads to get.

Story: The Cool Burn of Moonlight
Author: SCAngel
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 5980
Author's Summary: For him though, it was so much more than physical. Rose tempted him emotionally, which was much, much more dangerous. The physical attraction was simply the fuse that would light the powder keg.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, Jack
Warnings: Graphic Sex

Recced because: This is one of the first few fics that my husband and I totally agreed upon. It takes place in an AU near future where Rose never left, and Jack is traveling with them again. It is an intensely sensual, atmospheric, and romantic—one might almost say electric—fic. It's only two parts long, so it won't take too much time to read, but you may need to keep a fan handy for when you're done. You'll need it. Anyway, I have a fondness for fics where Jack is used as a means to get the Doctor to see what he needs to, and this certainly fits the bill.
