It’s always a sadness to get to the end of the week, and find I can only rec one more of the stories I’ve thought were great, but here we are again – I hope people have all found at least one new fic to like!
Story: Memory
Author: Persiflage
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3481
Author's Summary: A decade after she left UNIT, Liz encounters the Doctor again.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Liz Shaw
Warnings: None. (I suppose minor spoilers for BFAs The Blue Tooth and a possible spoiler (ish) for The Girl Who Never Was).
Recced because: It’s an unusual but very workable Doctor-Companion combination as Liz Shaw finds herself receiving a visit from a different man in a velvet jacket to the one she knew; a visit that both brings back unwelcome memories and helps her to deal with them.
It’s a well-written, thoughtful and measured character piece, with a bit of adventure mixed in, and a nice underlying vein of humour in the exchanges between Liz, who’s never lost her acerbic edge, and a typically enthusiastic Eight (and a more touchy-feely Doctor than Liz was ever used to). It does refer to incidents from Big Finish’s The Blue Tooth, but that shouldn’t worry you, as I was lucky enough to have this written for me a long while before I’d ever listened to that audio.
And, as for the perfect ending – it would be lovely if Big Finish ran with that one!
