Recced because: This is a lovely coda after the somewhat abrupt end of "The Curse of Fenric." It's sweet in a quiet, subtle way that makes sense for the characters, neither of whom are terribly touchy-feely, and despite its short length it is very thoughtful. It's also really keen observation of the characters, and a little bit of a celebration of the things to love about Ace. And the end is unexpected and really perfect.
"Did you know?" Ace said.
She hadn't actually meant to say it. Her mouth just went off on its own.
She was sitting at the TARDIS's kitchen table, which was normally a comforting and cozy place to be, and sipping a mug of warm milk–prepared by the Doctor, because for some reason his warm milk invariably got her to sleep even though the trick had never worked for her back in Perivale, which was something she had never, ever thought to question before today, until–until the final showdown with Fenric and the Things He Said. There was a fire in the fireplace, crackling merrily, blithely ignoring trifling details such as where the hell did the smoke go, just like it always did. The Doctor had given Ace the unspeakably naff mug with the humorous frog at the bottom. He was, at the moment, fiddling with a selection of brightly colored tumblers and an egg that he'd apparently found in his pocket. It was all incredibly normal.
And it shouldn't have been. Not after.
