Title: Head Over Heels
Author: Glinda
Rating: all ages
Word count: 1773
Characters/pairings: Clyde Langer/Dodo Chaplet
Author's summary: Holding hands, skipping stones and fighting aliens, who says romance is dead?
Warnings: none

Recced because: The random pairing generator can give us some truly cracky ideas that make for deliciously ridiculous crack!fic, but sometimes it also gives us cracky ideas that actually end up being weirdly plausible. This is just such a one. While it would never have occurred to me (or probably anyone) that Clyde Langer & Dodo Chaplet could make a good couple, in the infinite possibility of the vast timey-wimey Whoniverse, who’s to say that if Clyde travelled back in time & got stuck there for a while, he might not have met & hit it off with a nice young lady who knew as much about aliens as he did? This is a clever, breezy, yet truly touching story that makes this random pairing make sense, and bestows on Dodo the happier fate that she deserves as well. Go read it, and then you can win bets with your friends when you tell them, “yes, there is Dodo/Clyde fic, and it’s not even crack! Yes, for real! Bet you a fiver I’m telling the truth…” ;D

Title: Sweet Sorrow
Author: Alienist
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 912
Characters: Peri Brown, Fifth Doctor
Author's Summary: Peri stumbles across a box of memories.
Warnings: none

Recced because: The idea of the Doctor writing letters to his departed companions, saying things he wanted to say, but never to be sent, is an interesting one, and this little fic manages to pack a lot of emotion into it's short length. The letters presented here for Five's former companions are right on the nose, bittersweet though they may be, and it makes me wish I could read one for every companion.

Title: Lovesick
Author: Pendragon
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1402
Characters/Pairings: Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright
Authors's summary: Ian had planned a wonderful date for Barbara. There's just one problem- it's on a boat and Ian gets seasick.
Warnings: none

Recced because: Since the last fic I recced was a sad one, this rec is the opposite- a very happy moment of two companions living happily ever after, post-Doctor. This is an adorable piece of shippy Ian/Barbara fluff that captures their playful and loving relationship wonderfully. If you love Ian & Barbara, (and if you've seen any of their episodes you probably do!) then this fic is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and leave you feeling all warm & fuzzy! :D

Title: In the Kirkyard
Author: Penny
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 2034
Characters: Polly, Ben, Jamie
Author's summary: He flew to the moon and back. He liked the Beatles. He was one of the bravest people I ever knew. I miss him. On holiday in Inverness, Polly stumbles upon Jamie's grave.
Warnings: none except massive feels

Recced because: It's one of the sadder stories I'll probably ever rec, but it rings true all the same. It's heartbreaking to realize that companions who come from different times may never see each other again once they leave the Doctor- one may well have died before the other was even born, and how do we humans make peace with a paradox like that? This glimpse of Polly being confronted with the fact that she'll never see Jamie again makes your heart ache for her, but Polly has the advantage of having someone else around who understands. The hope that maybe Polly & Ben can help each other through gives a small uplifting note to this meditative, elegiac, beautifully written piece. You'll need to get out a box of tissues for this one, but trust me, it's worth it.

Title: Echoes
Author: helluin
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2696
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Nyssa
Author's summary: After a trying day dealing with prats wearing pasta on their foreheads (Mawdryn Undead), our Totally Just Friends duo goes exploring deep in the TARDIS to clear their minds and talk nerdy at one another. Smut ensues.
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: Though it may technically be labelled as 'smut', this is also a rather lovely character piece for Five & Nyssa. I've always enjoyed the 'kindred space nerds' relationship between them, and this fic does a believable job of showing what could have happened had they gone beyond just friendship. Their science-y banter & heart to heart about the events of 'Mawdryn Undead' in the beginning capture their voices excellently, highlighting their affection for one another as the source of their attraction, and they retain their endearingly earnest and sweet interaction even when things start to get hot and heavy. The timey-wimey sex is gorgeously written, with the clever concept of 'time echoes' heightening the sensuousness. If you ship Five/Nyssa, you have to read this, and even if you don't, you might change your mind after this one!

Title: Alone and Palely Loitering
Author: IrishVampire13
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 669
Characters: Eleventh Doctor, The Master (Ainley)
Author's summary: Sick at hearts, he'd said.
Warnings: none

Recced because: This short fic is a moving vignette of a rare moment of genuine sympathy from the Master toward the Doctor. Their simple dialogue, and the Master's thought process behind it, are perfectly balanced to show the conflicting claims of the old friendship & the long estrangement between the two of them. The moment of almost connection being made possible only when both feel they have nothing left makes it all the more heartbreaking & poignant. A beautifully understated examination of the Doctor & the Master's 'best enemies' relationship. :)

Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's short, sweet, and lovely. Taking place during a beautiful early scene in 'The Beast Below', you get to be in Amy's head, feeling her wonder right along with her. I'm amazed that this little gem hasn't yet been recced, and I'm honored to be the one to amend that.

Word Count: 875
Author's Summary: For all he claims to dislike the Earth and its population, the Master seems to have adopted, and enjoys, quite a few human habits.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a very fun and cute look into the Master's justification for adopting so-called human habits. Oh, look: The Master's being adorable again! Well, if any version's going to, then Delgado's is the version to best pull it off, and this author is a pro at catching his wry humor and charm. Author's Summary: "This rescue," the Doctor admitted as he dangled over the chasm, "is a work in progress."
Characters/Pairings: The Eleventh Doctor/River Song
Warnings: None

Recced because: It honestly sounds like it could be an episode. There's excitement, suspense, danger, adventure, snark, and Eleven/River cuteness. Pretty much all you need, really. Plus creepy spider-like creatures. Actually? That makes me glad it's not an episode, now that I think about it...I'd much prefer to read about creepy spider-like creatures than see them. ^.^ Because these babies sound much scarier than the real thing! Recced because: It's a very sweet interaction between the characters. I honestly think these two could be friends, if they weren't on opposite sides. Strange to think that it's possible to get the warm-fuzzies from the Master, of all people...but it is possible! ♥ Enjoy!

Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler/Metacrisis Doctor, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This was posted only yesterday, and I knew that I must add it to my rec list. I wanted to cry the moment I read it. It is simply beautiful, moving, a little but much-needed addition to 'The Day of the Doctor'. Every voice is perfectly in-character. I'm not sure what else to say. Just...enjoy. ♥

Word Count: 493
Author's Summary: The Doctor and the Tardis are having an argument; neither of them is going to back down.
Characters/Pairings: The Twelfth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was all set to start off with another of this writer's brilliant Eleven/River fics. Then I saw this, which was posted just last week, and I knew I needed to go in a different direction.

This is hilarious, cute as all get-out, and perfectly written. I seriously want this in an episode, because I can just see the look Capaldi would have on his face while delivering his end of the dialogue. His voice is flawlessly captured. You'll have a huge smile on your face after reading this gem!

Warnings: Horror descriptions

Recced because: Gosh, this story really hits you in the gut. An eerie, haunting concept that just leaves you breathless through the whole fic. Hello, I'm glad to be back making some recs again. Here's the first one:

Title: While You Were Locked Up
Author: RoseByAnyOtherName
Word Count: 764
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Rated: All Ages
Warnings: None.
Author's Summary: Donna is arrested without her passport and the Doctor has to bail her out. Hilarity ensues.
Recced because: Such a great, hilarious story, and these two characters are portrayed with spot on voices. It feels like a missing scene from the show. The friendship and banter in this fic is just so perfect too.
merryghoul: First Doctor (one)

Well, this is my last rec for my reccing period. And I can't help but to end this period on a crackly note.

Story: An Unearthly Child- Jane Austen Style!
Author: Meadowlark
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2779
Author's Summary: Ever wondered what it would have been like if Jane Austen had written for Doctor Who? Possibly it would have been something like this- here's the very first episode, re-written in the style of a Jane Austen novel.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: I recently saw this spot-on Austen parody of the opening scenes in "An Unearthy Child" and fell in love with it on the spot. I think it's a brilliantly executed cracky idea, and something I wouldn't mind seeing in more fanfic.
merryghoul: road (amy & 11)

Story: To Bring Him Back
Author: paynesgrey
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 315
Author's Summary: Amelia Pond wants her Doctor back, so she tries to lure him with food.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: This ficlet was written before "The Angels Take Manhattan," so it doesn't reference the end of that episode. I adore how Amy is portrayed here, confused and hurt that her Raggedy Man seemingly broke his promise to her, and how she'll do anything to get him back.

Story: New Territory

Author's Summary: Done as a prompt for someone who wanted to see Three and Sarah in a romantic setting with mentions of clothes and their age gap. Of course, knowing me, it had to have a twist.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Third Doctor
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: The twist in this fic is a bit sinister--but not too sinister. And I love this otherwise, calm, quiet look at Three and Sarah Jane's relationship.

Author's Summary: Locked in a psychic fight for his life, Jack needs all the help he can get.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Jack Harkness, The Master (Simm)
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: The Master tries to take Jack's immortality, all while testing the Doctor's devotion to Jack. I love wishingstar's Master here--his taunting is playful, yet full of malice, and his threats are all too real for the Doctor and Jack.

Author's Summary: Nyssa decides it's time to make an exciting change.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Fifth Doctor

Recced because: Short and humorous piece where Nyssa changes her clothes some time after the "Snakedance" serial, and the Doctor fails to notice her. It always makes me chuckle.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1042
Author's Summary: The Doctor takes Rose to the icy planet Woman Wept for a night of fun and sight-seeing.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: This is haveloved's interpretation of what Woman Wept might've been. Not only am I in love with the description of Woman Wept in this fic, but I also like the tropey hurt/comfort scenes throughout the story. To me, it's the right amount of fluffy while still adhering to the show canon.

Story: Life Goes On
Author: Llywela
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 49785
Author's Summary: Case-file. The Doctor has left UNIT…but life goes on without him and so do extra-terrestrial incursions. When mysterious fissures appear and unidentified aliens attack, Liz Shaw finds herself drawn back to UNIT after an absence of several years, while a newly returned Sarah Jane Smith is wondering what the future holds for her, now that her dearest friend has left her behind.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane Smith, Sergeant Benton, UNIT
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: After the Doctor leaves UNIT, several of his former companions and colleagues investigate a mysterious alien. I'm not usually someone who likes reading longer fics, and especially chaptered works (especially when those chaptered works are abandoned without a conclusion). I remember seeing this years back on [livejournal.com profile] who_daily and falling in love with it after the fic was completed. I find the mystery in this fic compelling. I couldn't stop reading this one, and I'm glad I did!

Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/River Song
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: I tried not reccing this fic, but I like it too damn much to not rec it. This is [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis' take of what happened when the Doctor was three weeks late with Clara's coffee. Here, he intends to get coffee, but he's sidetracked by a younger River, still in uni and still getting into trouble. True to River's nature, this visit doesn't end on a chaste note.

Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul. I'm also on Teaspoon as merryghoul (my work there was formerly under a different name). I'll be with you for the next two weeks as this comm's reccer.

For this reccing period, barring one exception, I really wanted to highlight people who haven't been recced before or have been recced less than a handful of times on this comm. Several of these works have been lingering in my fic bookmarks for years, and I'm just getting to rec them now. I blame myself for not reccing a lot of these fics earlier.

With that said, here's my first rec of the reccing period.

Story: The Moth People
Author: Ember Keelty
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1537
Author's Summary: "You aren't getting rid of me that easily, sweetheart. You can't; I'm inside of you."
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper/Suzie Costello
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: What if Suzie's resurrection glove never lost its connection after Suzie's second death in "They Keep Killing Suzie?" And why is Gwen not resisting this connection at all? I've always liked this fic's take on what could've happened after "They Keep Killing Suzie" for years now, and I'm finally happy I can rec it for Calufrax today.

Author's Summary: “It had come as no real surprise to the Doctor that the Master owned a fully functional genetic loom. Kidfic in which Five and Ainley!Master are living together for some reason and have a kid and also wacky parenting misadventures.”
Characters: The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley)
Pairings: Five/Ainley!Master
Warnings: None
Recced because:

“It was this combination of events that led the Doctor to kidnap his own son in the middle of night.”

So... you either like kidfic, or you don’t. Obviously there’s a lot of variation within the subgenre in terms of quality, but the actual idea seems a bit marmite regardless of that. I can only say that this fic’s sharp and wry and funny. There’s nothing smotheringly smarmy about it, despite the premise sounding like a vat of treacle the Candyman would for sure drown you in.

Why I like this fic more than is reasonable. )

Hello! Thought I'd close out the rec period with two REALLY different fics for the same pairing, to sort of--highlight Directions In/Ways With. (I may find a final gen/genish fic to properly close, because I feel fairly guilty...)

Warnings: Explicit Sex
Recced because:

So this is some In Heat/Pon Farr fic—honestly, I wish Who fic played more with classic fanfic tropes? Not exclusively, obviously. I’m glad for the variety and the particularly of a lot of Who fic, but I still wish that we got our quota of the classics and new standards. Where you at, Cave Fic? Et tu, ridiculous A/B/O? I sort of feel owed these things, even where I don't particularly like the trope in question!

Hello, everyone! We're finally running low on reccers, so I'm looking for volunteers to start reccing beginning August 24. If you've been reading this comm for a while but have never stepped forward to rec, please consider it – everyone, new and old reccers alike, is welcome to rec. All you need to do is select 4-10 stories that haven't been recced before and that meet the comm's fairly basic rules (well-written/formatted, no bashfic, etc.). Reccing periods last two weeks; complete rules and sign-up instructions in this post.

Tumblr, Facebook, Google+, and other users reading this: you don't need a LiveJournal account to rec! If you're interested in reccing, you can comment in the sign-up post, leave me an Ask, or email me at nonelvis42 on Gmail. (Note: if you're a Facebook user who wants to volunteer, please contact me by email; I have no Facebook account, and LJ doesn't send OpenID users comment notifications, so I have no reliable way of reaching you beyond email.)

Please feel free to share this post! The more people who see it, the better.

Thank you!

Story: The Renegade Tourbus
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1809
Author's Summary: “Matrix archives: mailing list section. Fragments from the 'Gallifreyan Expatriate Circular', commonly referred to as the 'GEC'.”
Characters: Iris Wildthyme, Romana II, The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (5th), The War Chief, Drax, The Master (Ainley), The Meddling Monk, The Rani
Pairings: a touch of Doctor/Master, but it’s comedic (and might, if we believe the Doctor, be a Trolling Turlough—a Trollough?) and doesn’t actually get to the warned-for Explicit (Chat) Sex: this is an ensemble piece uber alles
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because:

All the renegades have a mailing list, which Iris Wildthyme trolls. How many renegades? “To answer your question (more for the benefit of others interested) there are currently nine _official_ members of the list, of which only five are usually active. The other four are grandfathered from the original list created by Omega and distributed from the anti-matter universe.

Yes, before you ask, we do still distribute to all known universes. This is very difficult, technically speaking, and is also why I am moderator and not, for instance, Drax.” ←The Rani moderates. This fic spans several early Doctors’ worth of canon, and is fun for Three’s breezy email-voice alone.

“To: GEC list

Characters: Charley Pollard, C’Rizz, Grace Holloway, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Roberts), LOTS of Eight companions, in passing
Pairings: Eight/Roberts!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing (I’d add major character death, self-harm due to the mechanism of a plot thing)

The Doctor keeps swapping between his life on the TARDIS and a mundane AU where he’s a physicist teaching at Berkley in 2001, married to Roberts!Master and surrounded by people he knows in canon, but with switched-around names. Is it a fluff piece about them being humans and married and the Master mostly not being a terrible person who’d kill people? Or is it really disturbing and sad, a set up predicated on psychological weaponry (the origins of the Daleks’ Nightmare Child project) from the start of the Time War? Perhaps that depends on how creeped out you are by the ‘which of these lives is real’ “Normal Again” dilemma.

Ah, bless the mod for telling me different D/M pairings didn’t count as overloading on the same ship—I mean yes, you and I know this is cheating a bit, but really Calufrax is a database for posterity as much as anything, and it’s a shame and something that should be rectified if, somewhere on it, you can’t find someone stanning for the crème de la crème of any given pairing.

Story: Nonsense All Compact (The Community Theatre Remix)
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: All-Ages
Word Count: 12644
Author's Summary: “Braxiatel directs amateur community theatre in the small village of Gallifrey. Romana is the Council Leader in Gallifrey, and uses theatre as a political distraction. Eventually they hold hands. (Mundane AU of Gallifrey.)”
Characters: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), Andred, K9, cameos from Eight’s companions
Pairings: Romana II/Brax, Leela/Narvin, Leela/Andred
Warnings: None
Recced because:

This is a mundane AU remix of Aralias’s excellent The Importance of Being On Stage, which is also about Brax having to rustle the denizens of Gallifrey into amateur dramatics and well worth a read. Neveralarch’s version is funny (how could anything about Gallifrey as a middle England town and Brax being dragooned into running its am-dram fail to be funny?) and lovely, with great world-building that uses all kinds of canon well and doesn’t leave you feeling left out if you don’t remember who Samson and Gemma are (don’t worry, the Doctor doesn’t remember who they are either). It’s an ensemble fic before it’s anything else, though its shippy elements are variously satisfying and amusing.

I think you’d even dig this story if you didn’t know the Gallifrey audios and had only a passing familiarity with Big Finish. Brax is the Doctor’s brother and he has a morally-dubious art collection and also does grandiose political machinations back on the Time Lord ranch and pines after Romana and nothing ever works out for him—there, you’re good to go, enjoy.

Story: Living Things
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 16865
Author's Summary: “How did the Doctor from Scream of the Shalka come to live with the Master?”
Characters: Shalka!Doctor, Shalka!Master
Pairings: Shalka!Doctor/Shalka!Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing
Recced because:

If the last rec was somewhat inspired by the premise of Scream of the Shalka, then this fic is the origin story that enigmatic serial almost demands. It starts out grounded in a really good reworking of the BFA Charlie arc, which elegantly explains how we get from Eight to Shalka!Nine, and why he is the Doctor he is (the circumstances of his regeneration might even hint at an explanation for this off-sequence Doctor). (You don’t need to know BFA to get the gist, though.) This initial set-up is bleak, and this story gives us an unusual, compelling treatment of physical weakness, depression and dependency of various kinds—not in a decorative or purely romance-provoking hurt/comfort kind of way, these are things the author’s clearly interested in exploring in and of themselves.

Not even all the reasons why this fic is awesome, but enough to them to be worth lj-cutting. )

Story: Kept Man
Author: Aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30953 words
Author's Summary: In Scream of the Shalka, REG!Doctor (the ninth Doctor who almost was) was seen travelling round the universe with a robotic Master for no apparent reason. The ninth Doctor (who actually was) has a much better reason for travelling with a robotic Master, given that his entire race are dead. This fic assumes that he was and that the Master just kept out of sight so as not to alarm anyone.
Characters: Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Mickey Smith, Professor Yana, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm)
Pairings: Shalka!Master/Nine, Shalka!Master/Ten, Doctor/Master generally implied
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing (goodness, there’s a warning for that? Huh.)

A little about the author. )

Kept Man is relatively early but essential work from an essential writer in Doctor/Master and, really, the fandom. This fic tracks the first three series of the reboot, imagining that all along, an android version of the Master, built by the Doctor, lives in the TARDIS, preferring not to interact with the Doctor’s various human companions (a plot device that pulls on Scream of the Shalka’s presentation of the Doctor and an android Master voiced by Jacobi living together). It slots neatly into the show as we know it, but not in a facile, consequence-free ‘episode coda’ kind of way. ‘The Doctor keeps the Master on the TARDIS after the events on the Valiant’ is a big subgenre of Doctor/Master fic (especially the fic that came right after s3) (Kept Man is also probably a little influenced by Ariastar’s generally well-regarded Ten/Simm!Master alternate series—alternate series 4 and 5 are another sort of sub genre.). Aralias is engaging with that here, but pulling the trend/trope in directions that chime with her overall interests and sensibilities.

A little about why this fic is compelling and important. )
