Story: Murder at the Mill
Author: Johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1016
Author's Summary: The case is solved, the killer in custody. But Sherlock Holmes has some loose ends to tie up.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None
Recced because: My first Doctor was the First Doctor - I was ten when the first episode aired, with no idea what to expect, and soon got hooked. Often he seemed to be impatient with the inferior minds around him; this crossover shows him meeting an intellectual equal.

Most people reading this will already have heard the sad news about Nicholas Courtney aka Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. While he won't be on screen again as the Brigadier, we can, like the Doctor, always visit the Brig again at any point in his past - though with the written word and DVD/video-recordings, rather than a time machine.

Obviously, in light of this event I wanted to rec something with the Brig in it. What I have chosen is almost more a story about Liz, certainly a story more about their relationship than simply about the Brig, but I was planning on reccing it anyway, and it seems wrong to shy away from it just because it's relatively light-hearted and not entirely about Sir Alistair.

Story: A Turn In The Park
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 549
Author's Summary: Liz, the Brigadier, and a cliché.
Characters/Pairings: Liz/the Brigadier

Recced because: It's a lovely, understated story about the relationship between these two characters: Liz, stubborn but willing to change her mind if there is evidence to support such a change, and the Brigadier, a man of restrained emotional responses, but one not without great care and affection, not that at all. A thorough gentleman, despite whatever amusement he might derive from a situation. It's very short, there are relatively few events (in fact, the only event, 'Liz hurting her ankle', happens off screen), but the fic does a lot with its word count, and with what the summary describes as a cliché.

Extract: "I suppose you think I should have stayed put and screamed?" she said.

"At least one patrol would have been in earshot the whole time. We are investigating two disappearances, after all, and I'd rather that the third one wasn't you."

I hadn't thought I'd be going home for the long weekend when I signed up for this week (actually, I hadn't thought this until yesterday) but things change and from noon tomorrow to Monday I'll be without Internet access. To make up, I'll be double posting recs today and tomorrow. Many appologies.

Story: A Life at the Opera
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3398
Author's Summary: Donna finds herself living someone else's life. The only person who might be able to help her is a strange little man with a question mark umbrella.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Seven
Warnings: None

Recced because:

This fic is deliciously strange. It’s one of those stories you can come back to and read over and over, prying up a different bit of meaning each time. What caused Donna’s identity crisis? Did the Doctor do it? What are the skeleton creatures? Seven isn’t giving any answers (well, none that aren’t cryptic in any case), but by the end it hardly matters. I’ll admit to being a bit biased since these are my two favourite characters in the Whoniverse, but Donna and Seven make a fantastic team. Also, Seven’s run at disguising himself as a psychic shaman is hilarious.

Because Second Doctor era needs more love and it's Friday, here's a fun romp. :)

Story: The Investigators
Author:johne
Rating:
 PG
Word Count:
 1839
Author's Summary:
She's an up-and-coming photographer in swinging London. She's a genius from the future who's working as a model to make ends meet. Together, they fight crime!
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Herriot, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: "The Investigators" is a fun mash-up of the Second Doctor's era and something vaguely reminiscent of "Charlie's Angels." But the characters are dead on - Zoe is in girl genius mode and Isobel proves to be resourceful just in the nick of time. It tromps shamelessly through the clichés of the genre (and really, this is part of its charm), complete with terrible German accents and a cameo appearance by the Brigadier as the shadowy man behind the femme fatales. A campy, witty, tone pervades the whole tone of the fic and it is very easy to imagine yourself watching the action sprawled out in front of a floor television with rabbit ears.

A small sample... )

Hail & well met; I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook , known as vvj5 on Teaspoon and I'll be your reccer for this week. I'm very fond of all the Doctors, so there should be a fair spread of eras across the week.

Story: Jamie’s Angels in: Univited
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4811
Author's Summary: Everyone else is at the Christmas lunch. Donna's in the office on her own — at least, until a rather dubious plumber shows up.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Gia Kelly, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If I sneak it in right now, under cover of snow, no one will notice it’s technically a Christmas story?

Donna is left alone to mind the office and encounters the Second Doctor and Jamie in the guise of plumbers; what’s more there seem to be a lot of other strangers about, up to no good. This is a great comic fic to start off the week with a smile. Johne’s idea of the mythical ‘Season 6B’ is certainly much more fun than any others I’ve seen. The Sixties characters cause trouble and Donna stands no nonsense and sets the world to rights, as ever. If you’ve got the January blues, this fic is just the ticket to cheer you up.
