Story: An Unexpected Education
Author: Sleepy Sheep683
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 11930
Author's Summary: Over the course of a year, a scientific adviser falls in love for possibly the first time. It's most inconvenient.
Characters/Pairings: Liz/Brig, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, The Third Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story, along with it's companion piece No More Than A Feeling, is an excellent look at Liz Shaw's all too brief time at UNIT. It tallies perfectly with canon, and fleshes out what we saw onscreen in a beautifully believable way. I struggled to choose between the two, but, in the end, my love for all things Liz won out. (The other story - which views events from the Brig's perspective - is well worth a look as well, of course.)

Story: A Custom Vehicle
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 10724
Author's Summary: the Brigadier faces an unwelcome government audit, surely a good excuse to chase after aliens in the English countryside. Third Doctor with Bessie, Jo Grant, Benton, Yates and UNIT.
Characters/Pairings: Three, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, John Benton, the Brigadier
Warnings: none

Recced because:

This is my second long story rec, and, incidentally, it is also the beginning of a series A Custom Vehicle: the series
. I know I’ve already recc’d a UNIT fic, but *blushes* anyone who knows me knows how I love my Threefic. This is a glorious classic series romp which reads like a lost episode. The characters, the situations (the solutions to those situations) … etc. are all spot on UNIT era. I recommend this fic to Three fans who want to have a bit of fun, to NuWho fans who are curious about what UNIT was like back in the homespun days, and, generally, to anyone with an appreciation for good writing and a strong plot. This is the tops!

Author: Witchofthedesk
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3746
Author's Summary:
‘When the Brigadier's moustache falls off mid-shag, years of trust and loyalty are undermined.’
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier/Benton, Jo Grant, Mike Yates
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:

This story was inspired by the madness which is the kinkmeme. I think it’s nicely summed up by its original prompt: ‘When the Brigadier's moustache falls off mid-shag, years of trust and loyalty are undermined. Luckily, all is well thanks to Mike Yates, Jo Grant's mother and a tin of Spam.’

How can you go wrong with that???

This was only posted a few days ago, and I’m bumping off one of my original recs to fit it in. But rec it I must, because this is one of the funniest things I have ever read. The majority of the humour comes – not from the ridiculous situations – but from the ridiculously in-character reactions: Poor, clueless, and utterly betrayed Benton, Scarred-for-life Yates who has been wrangled into the role of unwilling relationship therapist, and dear sweet Jo who knows more than she’s letting on. And, of course, the stalwart Brig.

This week I intend to share the Martha love and the Donna love about equally. Some fics will be short, one is very long.

Enjoy !

Story: Time lines, Schmime lines
Author: Sleepy Sheep683
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6092
Author's Summary: Brig/Donna. In order to repair his TARDIS, the Doctor braves crossing his own time line. With Donna in tow, this turns out to be the least of his problems...
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Donna Noble, John Benton, Mike Yates, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Humour - very funny humour !

Recced because: It's funny, as Donna fics often are, but pairing Donna with the Brig is utterly inspired. I'd quote some of it, but it's all so funny, that I'd probably end up quoting all of it, which rather defeats the object. Read it, laugh, and please don't forget to leave the author feedback once you've read it...

Story: The Annual UNIT Picnic
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3521
Author's Summary: The Brigadier and UNIT attempt to enjoy their annual summer picnic, except for an odd alien occurrence which isn't the Doctor's fault, of course.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Benton, Yates
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's really amusing (by which I mean funny, just not laugh out loud funny). And it's just typical of that era with the way the characters react to each other and the situation. An excerpt is going to show how good this is far better than I can explain it.

Here is the first of my two longer-story recs in honor of making it through to midweek.

Story: Collected Ficlets

Rating: All Ages through Adult (each ficlet rated separately)
Word Count: 11,828 (most ficlets are under 500 words)
Author's Summary: What it says on the tin - a collection spot for drabbles and ficlets of ~1000 words or less.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa/Tegan, Jack/Susan, Rose/Adam, Rose/Jabe, Sarah Jane/Benton, Sarah Jane/Benton/Harry, Benton/Yates, Benton/Jo, Harry/Benton, Barbara/Susan, Master/Brigadier, Master/Jo, Third Doctor/Jo, Romana/Duggan, Rose/Nancy, Tenth Doctor/Jo, Tenth Doctor/Martha, Seventh Doctor/Rose, Rose/altverse!Suzie, Rose/altverse!Sarah Jane, Rose/Benton, Jack/Ace, Martha/Harry, Martha/Sarah Jane, Ace/Hex, Fifth Doctor/Nyssa
Warnings: nope

Recced because: These are simply amazing. They just might be my favorite thing in all of Who fan fiction, and I don't say that lightly. I don't know how she does it, but [livejournal.com profile] livii manages to pack so much into these little stories. Entire worlds and relationships and so much emotion in tiny snapshots. And I really think there is something for everyone here. Whatever pairings or characters you prefer, whether you enjoy angst or humor or action, it's all there. And the best part is, it looks like she is going to continue to update the masterlist as she writes more of these ficlets, so bookmark this page, people!

(PS. As an added bonus, Benton stars in a number of the stories and she writes him fabulously.)

here's a taste from my most favorite of the ficlets... )

Story: Everybody Wants You
Author: aces
Rating: Teen
Author's summary: Jack Harkness. He's quite shaggable, really.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Fitz, Jack/Ace, Jack/Peri, Jack/Nyssa, Jack/Harry, Jack/Jo/Yates/Benton/Brigadier (really!), Jack/Polly, Jack/Ian
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,900 words

Recced because: Captain Jack. Meeting (and sometimes shagging) his way through the DW canon. A tremendous amount of fun, and even if you don't know each character involved (I still haven't read any non-fanfic Fitz, myself) there's bound to be some you know and love. Some gorgeous characterizations - "It’s not as if I expected to walk into your—invisible spaceship, now, is it?” Harry retorted, nettled. “Now, look here, old chap, you can’t just leave things like this lying about where anyone could trip over them." - a mix of funny, insightful, and hot scenes, and a moment in UNIT's history that will keep me amused for the rest my life just picturing it all add up to an incredibly enjoyable fic.

Story: While Rome Burned
Author: Settiai
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1068
Author's Summary: Everyone was affected by the Sycorax ship hovering over London.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, John Benton, Liz Shaw, Mike Yates, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm always fascinated by fics that examine how characters from classic who deal with events in the new series, and this is one the best showing the UNIT characters from the Third Doctors era during the events of The Christmas Invasion and it is lovely. The Brigadier's frustration at not being able to do more and Jo's belief in the Doctor even decades later seemed particularly in character to me.

Story: Argumentum Ad Metam
Author: eponymous_rose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 19,599
Author's Summary: When a warehouse burns to the ground for no apparent reason - and the only living witness claims to have seen fire-breathing demons - the Doctor and Jo become embroiled in a deadly confrontation against an opponent who knows them only too well.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, Third Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's really difficult to find good, long UNIT era stories, but this one is a shining example of how awesome they can be if done right. The premise is basic enough: a fire draws the attention of UNIT to a possible alien connection. The story's much more than that, though. The plot is intriguing and tightly woven, keeping the reader thinking until the end, and it provides a wonderful look at the relationships between the various characters. It reminds me very much of an actual old school serial, which is always a good thing in my book.
