Story: Common Ground
Author: [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 1,965
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble have one thing in common.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Rose Tyler
Warnings:None

Recced because: I always adore thirty3flavors's writing, and I especially love her characterisation. Common Ground shows us how such different companions can all end up in the same place.

A snippet:

Do you want to come with me?

It comes about differently, each time. With Rose he has to ask twice, because it’s not until that second time that she’s selfish enough to say yes. Martha has to work for it; she saves his life and fights his battles and stares down witches and Daleks and the Doctor himself before she gets her invite. Donna says no and then changes her mind a minute too late, so she has to she invite herself along, hatboxes and all.

It comes about differently, but it’s the same offer each time.

Story: Open Door Policy
Author: CyTheWriter
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3282
Author's Summary: Martha explains a few things to Maria, and learns the temptations of open doors.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Maria Jackson; hints of Martha/Maria, Sarah Jane/Maria (one-sided)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: I'm a sucker for any fic that crosses over the SJA crew with the Doctor's companions. This fic not only does that, but it presents a totally different take on the mentor/student relationship that is too easy to fall into when writing about the SJA gang. This particular story explores Maria's quasi-canon crush on Sarah Jane (no easy feat, even when Maria is older, as she is in this fic); Martha finds herself in a curious role somewhere between friend, big sister figure, and suddenly, possibly, something more. The two characters may not be on equal ground, but they're both in unexplored territory, and the tension is built deliciously and believably. I also love the way the author incorporates Torchwood and specifically Jack, who never appears but inevitably comes up in conversation.

Author's Summary: When a stranger holds out their hand and asks "Come with me?" sometimes you just have to take the chance.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Compassion
Warnings: no standard warning apply
Recced because: In this AU future!fic, Martha’s lost Mickey to a Cardiff Weevil during a Torchwood patrol. (This was also written before Torchwood: Miracle Day, so the story’s been Jossed a bit. But don’t let that stop you from reading this.) One day, she gets a special visitor.

Martha is my favorite companion from the Tenth Doctor era, and I find her reward at the end of this fic to be fitting and heartwarming for her character.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, your reccer for the week, and otherwise known as vvj5 on Teaspoon. I'm a big fan of all eras of our amazing show, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone as we go through the week.

Story: The Road Untraveled
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1424
Author's Summary: Just because you part ways with someone doesn't mean they stop influencing your life, as Ace, Mags, and the Doctor find out.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Mags, Seventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Third Doctor, Frobisher, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Second Doctor, Martha Jones, Rani Chandra.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Well. Two recs in two days that feature a suspiciously similar long and strange list of ingredients? What are the chances? There is an explanation, which lies in a recent challenge I made, using 12 prompts that could be played with individually, or together. (And I had no idea what yesterday's rec would be, but I was delighted - I can now rec the other, utterly amazing resulting fic containing all 12 here today.)

What I never envisaged was that someone could take all twelve and write a beautiful, short and serious fic that ties them all together. It should be impossible, but, as it turns out, if the writer is as talented as Daystar Searcher, it suddenly becomes perfectly natural and coherent. The main strand of the story follows Ace and Mags and their separate fortunes and whether either or both regret not staying with each other, but it doesn’t forget to include Welsh myths, vampires, evil giraffes, Rani Chandra, Frobisher etc. etc.. It’s amazing. Really. I could stand here and flail a little more about how impressed I am, but you’d be much better off running away to read it now. So, go; read!

Story: The Giraffe Convolution of Doom
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6421
Author's Summary: There are vampire giraffes reported at the London Zoo. The Doctor must do something about that, seeing as he’s been there before.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Jamie McCrimmon, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Meddling Monk
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's clever how Primsong ties in the different Doctors and companions and events. It's also a quite ridiculous story - the ridiculousness of it all comes out of the characters and it feels right.

Story: Inspiration
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2794
Author's Summary: Endurance is its own kind of heroism.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, Nyssa (in background)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a wonderful, uplifting fic that is full of marvelous ingredients. First off, it's an amazing piece of world-building, with a very well-drawn original character. Second, Martha gets to use her medical skills to help combat a plague. Third, Nyssa, a companion of the Fifth Doctor, gets an important mention. But best of all, it's a fic about heroism, just as Doctor Who is a show about heroism. The Doctor swoops in, fixes things, and leaves, but others stay and slog, and become heroes by dint of their endurance. As made plain in this fic, these latter types of heroes can be the most inspiring of all.

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. It really doesn’t seem that long since the last time I took this awesome responsibility back in early September when Doctor Who and Torchwood were both rounding off and I was a lot freer than I am now, as since then I’ve started my rather extensive postgraduate degree. Still, can’t be so difficult to find some quality fics from all eras of Who, right?

Now to begin we’ll start with some episode tweaking within the still much loved Tenth Doctor era…

Story:
A Complicated Event In Time And Space
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 53,493 Words
Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor,  Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:  A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!

Story: Martha Jones, Angel of Death!
Author: calapine
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 2,083
Author's Summary: How not to kill the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones/The Doctor (10th), the Black Guardian
Warnings: none

Recced because: For my last rec, I was going to pick something really deep and meaningful. The I realized I'd rather just rec something really really silly. So this is it! The premise is essentially that after Adeola (from Army of Ghosts) died, she was recruited by the Black Guardian and brought back to life as Martha Jones in order to kill the Doctor. It basically just gets more excellent and ridiculous from there.

Story: From the First -- Oh, Those Human Women!
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Teen, some adult themes
Word Count: 7,214
Author's Summary: As the 10th Doctor considers his possible future, or lack thereof, with Martha Jones, he is drawn to remember his very first human lover -- the Aztec woman Cameca. What is it about human women? Assumes familiarity with Gridlock and general NuWho history.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), Martha Jones, Cameca, Brannigan, Valerie
Warnings: As the author notes - sex scenes, but nothing graphic.

Recced because: Typically, sex scenes tend to make me blush and hide like an eight-year-old under the duvet. If they're tastefully done, I can dig 'em - I may be immature, but stronger stuff lurks beneath!

Anyhow, this is one of the best stories I've come across where sexual themes are the main focus of the plot. The First Doctor, by most accounts not the first to pop into mind where such scenes are concerned, manages to be delightfully accurate and adorable. Cameca is feisty. Martha cuddles kitten-babies. Kitten-babies. One of my favourite fics on Teaspoon.

Story: Turn Your Back
Author: Singe
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21943
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor had a simple philosophy about public nudity. "If it embarrasses you, turn your back." Hmmm, what about the other Doctors? Here are ten humorous vignettes with a central theme of nakie-ness.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 10 and various companions (ETA for the intrepid calufrax tagger: Susan, Ian, Barbara, Victoria, Jamie, Liz Shaw, Brigadier, Mike Yates, John Benton, Sarah Jane, Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Melanie Bush, Ace, Jo Grant, Martha Jones)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Honestly, how can you pass up a story with that summary? Do you need more? Okay, it's ten stories that go effortlessly from era to era, that are quirky and imaginative and funny and outlandish. They are also well-written and fun, inducing a little bit of ear reddening blushes at times, but also exploring concepts of friendship, acceptance, vulnerability, and the tendency of the Doctor to gravitate to gift shops in more ways than one. And well, if it's not your cuppa you can always turn your back...

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Cliff Jones, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Sergeant Benton, UNIT

Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara. Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor and Donna looking after a baby when neither of them quite know what to do is funny. It's the sort of story made more interesting by time travel, once we learn where the baby's come from. It's a good idea that I can see being canon.

This is my last rec this week (and the longest fic!). I hope everyone's found at least one new story to enjoy!

And don't forget - if you've read and enjoyed any of the fics this week, leave a review (however brief) - such things are better than meat and drink to us fic authors.

Story: A Time of Grace
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 44439
Author's Summary: Following the Time War, Romana discovers that she has enemies she'd rather forget, friends she's never met, and a duty to the memory of her planet.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Gwen Cooper, Jack Harkness, K-9, Leela, Lucy Saxon, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Romana II, Romana (Author Created)

Recced because: It's a brilliant post-Time War fic that combines Classic and New Who seamlessly.

There was a... thing, in the Tardis control room.

The Doctor had picked it up on a dark, ravaged moon in the Equinos system - one of those places he hadn’t really meant to go to, but had nonetheless found himself landing on after entering random coordinates into the Tardis’ systems. The last time he’d been there there had been the first tiny, delicate sparklings of life beginning to burst out on its icy, rocky surface. Now, nothing.

Nothing except this thing. The thing, as he’d begun to think of it. It was almost at the point of developing independent capitalization in his mind, and that was, in his experience, never a good sign.

The thing came up to about the top of his breast-bone, and was about as wide as his arms could reach around, though it tapered a bit at the top. When he first saw it he’d had the sick thought that it was a new kind of Dalek armour that had somehow survived the war, but closer inspection hadn’t borne that out. It was gold, but the shape and design of it was completely unlike their circular knobules and venting. It wasn’t made of dalekenium, anyway, but some other metal equally impervious to all the scans he’d subjected it to. The elemental make-up seemed somehow familiar, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

My penultimate rec is, like my ultimate one, for a Big Bang fic!

Story: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road
Author: pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 23849
Author's Summary: Years after her adventures in the TARDIS, Martha Jones is haunted by the Doctor as she investigates an alien crash site.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th)

Recced because: It's a thoughtful and occasionally moving look at Martha, Mickey and Jack years after their travels with the Doctor. It shows Martha at her best: clever, compassionate, thoughtful and occasionally stubborn. (And I adore the idea of Martha treating humans who're stupid enough to get alien headcolds because they don't take sufficient precautions!)

Glancing up from her notes as she stands at the podium, Martha glimpses brown hair and a blue-suited shoulder. After her dream that morning, she immediately thinks Doctor, her breath catching in her throat.

She tells herself that blue suits and brown hair aren't especially uncommon. Besides, the Doctor she knew is gone: years ago, she and Mickey intercepted the UNIT reports of a new regeneration spotted. And she'd known even before that, hadn't she? Known it in her heart that he was dying when she saw him last, known it like she had been punched in the gut.

She fusses with her notes until she's recomposed herself, and when she looks up, there's no Doctor, just a dozen dozen restless faces, staring up at her.

From travelling the galaxy to defending the Earth to hunting aliens to this, she thinks, scanning the room. Working for herself under the banner of Jones Xenobiological Consulting, Martha's in high demand in the field of xenopathology, though she finds most of this plays out as treating people who've caught alien head colds (and the odd STD--she doesn't ask) from investigating crash-landed artifacts.

Story: Just A Jump To The Left
Author: sleepismyfriend
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 18317
Author's Summary: The Doctor goes to 1976 to retrieve one Liz Shaw.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Luke Smith, Martha Jones, Rory Williams, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (11th)

Recced because: I love the way sleepismyfriend has got so many different era companions working together, under the Doctor's guidance (more or less!) to save Liz from the effects of an unpleasant alien encounter.

"Hello everyone, how long was I gone?" He asked, and Sarah looked to her watch as Rory and Martha exchanged glances.

"Forty-five minutes or so?" Martha looked to Sarah.

"Forty-seven and a half, to be exact." Sarah looked up from her watch, dropping her wrist as the Doctor looked to her, and she smiled. "Which is definitely a new record for him."

"Yes." The Doctor gave himself a mental congratulatory pat on the back before stepping forward to pat the side of the TARDIS's door. "That is what I am talking about. Over nine hundred years, and I finally get the guidance systems calibrated properly. That takes skill, you know. Slept through that class quite a bit in school."

[...]

"Heh, last time you said that, the TARDIS ended up underwater for seventeen hours during fish migration." Rory added. "Although, the colours were remarkable, I'll have to give you that. I see you didn't leave the parking brakes on again."

"Oh, quiet you." The Doctor waved Rory off. "Just because Mr. Amy Pond decided to take some outrageous holiday with River in Egypt does not give you, Mrs. Amy Pond, the right to be cheeky. I half expect Interpol to call us any moment now."

Story: Planar Flight
Author: jinxed_wood
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 12189
Author's Summary: It's 1913, and The Farringham School for Boys is haunted by ghosts. Martha suspects foul play, especially when another Doctor arrives on the scene.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (8th),

Recced because: I am a sucker for stories featuring Martha and other Doctors than Ten, but especially for ones featuring Eight and Martha. I'm also a sucker for stories set during Martha and the Doctor's stay in Farringham in 1913. This combines both marvellously and imaginatively.

Martha staggered forward, into the TARDIS. “Phew, you had me going there for a moment–” She froze and looked around her, her eyes taking in the gothic architecture, and the dripping candelabras. A sagging cosy armchair stood to one side of the console, looking ridiculously out of place. Martha eyed the tea cup perched on a footstool beside it. Steam still curled up from its contents.

“Do you want a cup?” a chipper voice asked. “The pot is still fairly fresh.”

“You’re not going to suddenly materialise out of the walls, are you?” Martha asked, momentarily unsure.

“Does that have any bearing on the actual question?”

“Yes, actually, I think it might,” Martha said, a little more firmly. “How the hell did you get in here?”

“Me? Why, I live here,” the voice said.

Here's the first of this week's several multi-era stories:

Story: Evolution
Author: Concordiaadieu/[livejournal.com profile] catholicphoton
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30094
Author's Summary: Set Post-JE. Martha goes missing, and panic ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th), Torchwood, UNIT

Recced because: It's a rolicking good adventure romp with a creative use of Martha's backstory and a Classic Who enemy who not many fic authors have bothered to bring into New Who stories.

“Doctor, what is that? Can it find Martha?”

“It detects disturbances to the fabric of space-time, so hopefully yes.”

Jack cleared his throat. “I’ve got one of those too, only mine’s sleek and sexy.”

“Jack, stop it. Now assuming that the disturbance you detected earlier with your sleek, sexy and, by the way vastly inferior, detector thingy is connected to Martha’s disappearance, and in all honestly signs point to yes, then with this massively superior detector thingy not only can I detect it, but I may be able to trace where it came from and where it went. The when may be a little trickier.”

Jack shrugged and grabbed Gwen’s hand as the Doctor took off at a run toward the disturbance. Jack snorted. “He could have just asked where we got the reading, but no, he likes run.“

Gwen grinned at him. “You’re one to talk.”

Hello, I'm Pers, and I'm your reccer this week. Expect lots of multi-era stories this week as I'm very fond of those, and lots of Martha Jones too, as she's my favourite companion.

Story: The Shadow Land
Author: ciaviel/[livejournal.com profile] fic_of_fork
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5309
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Martha go to a shadow puppet theater performance in Bali, and trouble finds them. Takes place after "Human Nature/Family of Blood."
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th)

Recced because: It's very imaginative and intriguing.

"This can't be good," he said, still white, "This is bad. Really bad, a bad pudding with extra bad sauce." The air suddenly grew cold, and the shadows became darker. "Wait, Martha..." And then he saw the shadows thicken around her, imperceptibly at first. Then a dark pit opened, and the thickening shadows dragged her into it, Martha swearing at them the whole way down. "Five billion languages, and I've just learned a few new words...I'm going to regret this," the Doctor sighed, as he jumped in after her, the shadowy hole closing behind them.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: about 1000
Author's Summary: Some days, the Doctor doesn't answer his phone
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Martha Jones
Warnings: Offstage character death

Recced because: A bunch of Sarah Jane tribute fics were written when Liz Sladen died earlier this year. This one is my favorite. The fic itself is quiet and low-key, but it's very affecting for all that. Maybe even because it's so quiet and simple. (Also, DBSkyler writes a very good Rory.)

On timey-wimeyness, and those who have to clear up the mess afterwards (in honour of the topic, this one is out of chronological order):

Story: Strangers in Bow Ties
Author: sciathan_file
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2364
Author's Summary: Martha returns home to find a strange man sitting on her sofa. Spoilers through 5x07, "Amy's Choice."
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a fic that ties up loose ends with style (and bow ties) and also, in many ways, explores the fall-out of the Doctor’s adventures for those left with the more prosaic clearing up to do. Eleven returns to ask Martha if UNIT have noticed a crack anywhere. Of course, he manages to turn up early, and the result is a funny, sweet fic – and a convincingly creepy use of S5 to tie up continuity from The End of Time. The characterisation is great (even Amy’s short cameo is very recognisable) and I always love a fanfic that can take some of our show’s innate craziness and make something well worth reading out of it. This is one of those stories.

Story: Blast from the Past
Author: Jinxed Wood
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2046
Author's Summary: Martha's first call to the office, at UNIT, holds a surprise for her she hadn't expected. Sequel to 'The House Call'
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Unspecified Companion
Warnings: None
Recced because: The death of Nicholas Courtney earlier this year gave us another character to remember, the Brigadier. This is a lovely story which shows him doing what he does best; acting as a foil for the other characters, Martha Jones and Sarah Jane Smith. Although it's a sequel, it works perfectly well on its own.

Story: Shock Treatment
Author: fourzoas
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1692
Author's Summary: Regeneration is a private affair.
Characters: Nine, Ten, Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: Martha Jones stumbles across a newly regenerated Ninth Doctor while stranded in 1969. This fic doesn't pull its punches in either the trauma or the resolution; it's a quick, dark little tale, the kind that you are glad to have read, but sad to have experienced, in a way. Very well done.

Story: Impossible Things
Author: Casira
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1848
Author's Summary: After the events of "Family of Blood", the Doctor dreams of lives, loves, and what he most needs.
Characters: Ten, Martha
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: John Smith is no more, but the Doctor still has his dreams. It is angsty and heartbreaking like a lot of Tenth Doctor stories, but it doesn't sacrifice characterization to do it and it's not afraid to explore the side of the Doctor (especially Ten) that holds on to his companions more than a bit selfishly. It is also beautifully written and I love the metaphor of human hearts still trying to live in pairs.

Prejudice

I do beg your pardon for not having a rec yesterday but my electricity was out thanks to a million tornadoes flying up my ass here in Raleigh, NC. (I'm fine, not even my petunias were dented but...dang.) So, not being in a lighthearted mood, I've decided to go for a more serious story rather than the funny fluff I usually rec. Thank you for having me this past week!

Story: Prejudice
Author: March Hare
Rating: Teen-ish
Word Count: 3,616
Author's Summary: "1969. The end of the greatest decade the human race had ever known. Martha Jones resolves a crisis, almost makes a friend and learns that she doesn't really know the Doctor at all. DW/Withnail & I crossover, spoilers for Blink."
Characters/Pairings: Withnail, I, Martha Jones, the Tenth Doctor
Warnings: After-effects of drug abuse.

Recced Because: It's another brilliant crossover. Withnail and I is a hilarious (on the surface) movie that stars Paul McGann as the unnamed 'I' and, if you somehow didn't know, he's also the actor who played the Eighth Doctor. You don't need to have watched Withnail and I to understand what's going on, March Hare's characterization of everyone is flawless. She also combines both universes seamlessly and shows us what effect seeing a double (?) of his former self does to the 10th Doctor during the time when he and Martha are trapped in 1969 during the events of Blink. I'm so glad I stumbled across this.

When Martha woke up early the next morning, she was still in the armchair. But now she had the tattered afghan from the sofa wrapped around her, and there was an angel pouring a cup of coffee in the tiny kitchenette. At least, that was how the man seemed to Martha, now that he was calm, upright and sober: weak and grainy city sunlight gilding his curls, softening the angular lines of his face, gentling his expression from ill and worried into something more contemplative.

Story: Old Friends Make the Worst Enemies
Author: sahiya
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4217
Author's Summary: Giles is having nightmares. But he needn't fear they might come true, because they already have.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), Martha Jones, Rupert Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I love the way that [livejournal.com profile] sahiya has combined these two worlds, and how we see the effects of the Year that Never Was on the Buffyverse. Furthermore, it was a stroke of genius to have it be Giles that reaches out to the Doctor given his background of, um, old friends hell-bent on destroying the world. I love what these two characters bring out in each other.

Story: The One with the Cotton Candy and the Batteries
Author: Bananaqaiquiri
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1190 words
Author's summary: It's 2012, and a bloke in leather pisses Mickey Smith off at the supermarket.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey Smith/Martha Jones(-Smith), Ninth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: A couple of my recs this week are quirky timey-wimey stories, and here's the first of them. A man walks into a supermarket... yes, really! It's 2012, and Mickey Smith is minding his own business as he hunts down acceptable snacks in the supermarket - until he's accosted at the checkout by a man in black leather with big ears wanting to borrow a quid. While the Doctor wants to know what Mickey's doing in 2012, Mickey has a much more important question: why on earth is the Doctor buying batteries?

It's funny and unexpectedly sweet, and I loved it. You may need to suspend disbelief just a little given how different 2005 Mickey looks from End of Time Mickey, but the story's good enough to ignore that.

A little taster to whet your appetite: below the cut )

If you enjoy it, please tell the author!

Story: The Darkness is Coming
Author: Diciple of Time
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 104,774
Author's Summary: The new drums are more dangerous than the Master knows, and he and the Doctor will have to face a part of their past they forgot. S4 Rewrite, Master/Doctor, two chapter crossover with Firefly
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simms!Master, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jenny
Warnings:. Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: One of the pleasures of reccing is that you get a chance to highlight stories that otherwise might be missed or passed over. Today’s rec takes a little patience to appreciate, but I think it’s worth the effort, particularly if you’re a Doctor/Master fan. It’s an AU story where the Master, mysteriously resurrected after LotTL, shows up on the planet of the Ood to help the Doctor and Donna. The drums have changed, and the Master has decided to take the Doctor up on his offer to travel in the TARDIS with him. It takes a couple of page views before the action starts, and things don’t really take off until Chapter 2, but once they do, it’s a wild and wonderful ride. For those skeptical about a reformed!Master, don’t worry. He’s still the Master – things aren’t automatically “sunshine and daisies.” There is a logical explanation for everything (well, logical by Whovian standards) and the author does a great job of wrapping it all up by the end. The character interactions are great – I loved the Master and Donna snarking at each other, and watching the Master deal with Sylvia Noble is a treat. As a bonus, there is a great Firefly crossover in the middle chapters.

Greetings! I post as Allonym on the Teaspoon and I will be your reccer this week. As usual, I’ve searched for a variety of recs - hope you find something you like.

Story: P.S. Happy Christmas

Word Count: 982
Author's Summary: Schrodinger had a cat; Martha has and/or might have a pie. She's pretty sure the same principle applies
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings:. none

Recced because: March 14 (3.14) is Pi Day, and what better way to celebrate than a timey-wimey slightly cracky story that may or may not be full of sugary goodness.

It's my last rec of the week! Thanks for having me - I hope you enjoyed the fic.

Story: Miniature Disasters
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4456
Author's Summary: A heartwarming tale of marriages and a baby.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones/The Doctor (10th), Romana II/The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This story is one of those that just brings it all together. New Who, Classic Series, nods to the Gallifrey canon. Three different timelines all running in the same space. It's funny and interesting and clever, and it's one of the fics that got me started writing my own fanfiction. Miniature Disasters is just really, really good.

Well, it’s my last rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories to recommend. Now, for those who love the sugary goodness of a well crafted crack!fic, I’ll leave you with a song.

Story: Doctor Who, Broadway Style! Les Miserables
Author: azriona
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3476
Author's Summary: The Master is plotting the enslavement of the Earth, and the Doctor is in a wheelchair. Whoever will be able to stop him? Martha Jones, that’s who! Featuring a lovely duet between Rose Tyler (yes, Rose Tyler) and the Doctor. It’s not just Crack!Fic, it's Musical Crack!Fic!
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, The Master (Simms), Francine Jones, Clive Jones, Tish Jones, Lucy Saxon, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Tom Milligan, Jack Harkness,
Warnings:. none

Recced because: The utter brilliance of this musical crack!fic is right there in the title. Les Miz fans, be prepared to start humming "At the End of the Day."

Story: Little White Lie of Omission
Author: A Moment in Subtext
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1360
Author's Summary: Martha Jones has a secret from The Year That Never Was. No one has ever asked, and she's never seen any reason to bring it up.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I love it when a fic can help fill in missing pieces of the puzzle, and this story is the best explanation I’ve read about how Martha’s journey during The Year That Never Was really worked. Plus it features a very cool timey-wimey Torchwood tie-in.

Let's end the week with an epic crossover!

Story: Rebuilding a Life
Author: Settiai
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 40641
Author's Summary: Near the end of the Time War, Fitz Kreiner finds himself stranded on Earth in an unfamiliar time and place. His life moves on, whether he wants it to or not. (Crossover with "NCIS.")
Characters/Pairings: Anji Kapoor, Compassion, Donna Noble, Fitz Kreiner, Harriet Jones, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, Samantha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi). Fitz / Tony.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I've gradually moved from ignoring NCIS to becoming a fan, and this is an excellent NCIS crossover (with several other secondary crossovers brought in, as far as I can tell, for the sheer fun of it) spanning several years which for once doesn't tell everyone everybody's secrets in the first five minutes of the story, and stars an amazing number of doctors and companions. I was very surprised to find that it has never been recced here, because it turns up on NCIS rec lists fairly often, but delighted to have this opportunity to introduce it to a wider audience.

You don't need much knowledge of the NCIS characters, they're described as they appear in the story, and the viewpoint is always Fitz, initially as an outsider gradually meeting and getting to know them. In some ways a little ignorance of the show helps, because some of the canon NCIS events have more impact!

And that concludes my week of recs - greatly looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Story: Once upon a time
Author: Selena
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1615
Author's Summary: Five degrees of separation between Peter Petrelli and Martha Jones. What the Heroes cast did during The Year That Wasn't. Crossover with Heroes. Spoilers for the second season of Heroes.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones

Recced because: I like crossovers, I like Selena's writing, and I'm a sucker for stories about the Year That Wasn't. This is all three.

Hello - I'm Starling-Night over at Teaspoon, and I'll be reccing a few fics for you this  week :) I like scary New Series oneshots, so let's start off with one of those.

Story: This is Martha Jones
Author: Siani
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 99
Author's Summary: **Spoilers for The End of Time pt 1** The first time she had the dream, she called him.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones
Warnings: none
Recced because: Short as it may be, this fic packs one hell of a punch, and takes full advantage of that little bit of Fridge Horror we all got from the Master Plan in EoT. Like many of us I found that particular bit quite comical, but this? Not so. Prepare to be creeped out by just 99 words.

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song
Author: azn_jack_fiend
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5769
Author's Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's traveled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones’ family
Warnings:. none

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.

 Story: The Wind's Will
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1062
Author's summary: On Kurhan, the Doctor learns that neither he nor Martha are very good skaters.
Characters: Ten, Martha
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm a sucker for post-"42" fics, and this is a very quiet, gentle coda to that episode.  Eve11's deft writing makes this a very sweet moment between Martha and Ten while highlighting the gap between them.  Here's an excerpt:

Hello Whoniverse!   I'm LibraryLover82 (Library_Lover on Teaspoon), and I'll be reccing again this week.   I tried to mix up the story length a bit, but most of them are quick reads, because that's usually what I have time to read.   There will be a healthy dose of New Who, a strong flavor of Classic Who, a dollop of Sarah Jane Adventures and just a tiny pinch of Torchwood, so I hope you find something you like.   I have also tried to rec mostly authors who have never been recced here before, because I think it's easy to fall into a habit of only reading familiar authors and you can miss some good things when you do that.   As always, please tip the authors with a comment!

Story: Seven Days in a Year that Never Was

Author: Ebbyzone

Rating: All Ages – One story rated Adult

Word Count: 14,932

Author's Summary: Seven days in the life of Martha Jones during the year she walked the Earth for the Doctor.

Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, others

Warnings: None

Recced because:

I'm starting with the longest one.  It’s somewhat unusual to rec a series, but these stories could easily just have been chapters in one story, so I decided to go for it.   I really like how Ebbyzone describes some of the moments Martha had during the YTNW when she wasn’t actively running for her life.   Martha’s memories of happier times with her family are what I imagine she would have thought about a lot during her travels, both because she was worried about them, and because it gives her strength to remember what normal feels like.   There are mild spoilers for the novel “The Story of Martha” in this, but to be honest that book disappointed me a little.   These stories didn’t.

Hello everyone! Since I get to rec from now until All Hallow's, I've decided to honor the spirit of the season-- mua ha ha-- and go with dark, scary, creepy, and/or strange fics. Hopefully a bit of each!

So I hope you enjoy... Tales from the Teaspoon Crypt.

Story: The Bridge
Author: Scythe The Wicked
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary: In a small town in modern day Mississippi, a local teenager recalls the horrid story of a lynching in the Depression Era South and the terrible miracle and tragedy that followed.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha Jones.
Warnings: Explicit violence and death.

Recced because: this is a completely brutal fic, and it reads like a blow to the gut. It' short, it's stark, it's superbly written, and it pulls no punches: not about death, not about bigotry, not about the very real dangers of the life that the Doctor leads his companions into, and certainly not about the darkness in humanity's-- and the Doctor's-- hearts. At the same time there's a distinctly phoenix-like taste of hope tucked into the timey-wimey ending, and, thus, the entire fic, which redeems what might have been a distasteful piece of snuff fic into a wonderfully haunting morality play. Not for the faint of heart, or stomach, but totally worth it.
