So... you either like kidfic, or you don’t. Obviously there’s a lot of variation within the subgenre in terms of quality, but the actual idea seems a bit marmite regardless of that. I can only say that this fic’s sharp and wry and funny. There’s nothing smotheringly smarmy about it, despite the premise sounding like a vat of treacle the Candyman would for sure drown you in.

I’m glad for the variety and the particularly of a lot of Who fic, but I still wish that we got our quota of the classics and new standards. Where you at, Cave Fic? Et tu, ridiculous A/B/O? I sort of feel owed these things, even where I don't particularly like the trope in question!

Story: Supreme Courtship

Now with more Eight and Lucie, because Sheridan Smith!Elle Woods could not be ignored.

Recced because: OK, so, logic dictates that I should probably choose something a bit more accessible (and I did say more serious... and I doubt x_los will thank me), but I want to rec this one, so, er, here it is!

Regarding the accessibility issue though and to bring us all up to speed, know this:
In 2010 'Legally Blonde: The Musical' (surprisingly excellent, despite being a musical adapated from a film)(which I also think is surprisingly excellent) opened on London's West End starring Sheridan Smith (who plays Eight's companion Lucie Miller) as Elle Woods, and Peter Davison (Five) as Professor Callahan, who is much more villainous than the movie version of the same character (one of his songs is called 'Blood in the Water') but who still makes a move on Elle towards the end. This spiffy video advert they did has some fun visuals of Smith as Elle, and Davison as Callahan (dancing). Really all you need to know is that Five's been chameleon-arched and now thinks he's a lawyer. I just think the Legally Blonde stuff is a fun background.

Anyway, so it's a good and amusing idea. Five is so totally unlike Callahan, who is quite like Ainley!Master. There's a lot of humour to be derived from that and from misunderstandings, etc, and if you're read other x_los stuff you'll know she's good at humour. She's also very good at a) writing porn - so if you like that sort of thing, there is some of that and b) writing the Doctor/Master relationship. Nothing is easy and no conversation isn't actually a confrontation, but they like each other enough that it works if either of them are willing to admit it.

This fic also has something else to recommend it - Eight and Lucie! One of my all time favourite Team TARDISes. They are very good here, particularly Lucie, who brings some fun meta-commentary on the Doctor/Master relationship towards the end. In short: I like this fic very much – I hope you enjoy it.

Story: Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I was an Architect remix)

Rating: Teen (it says All Ages, but I might even go so far as to say Adult)

Author's Summary: There is a room in the TARDIS that always stays locked. (Written for the best_enemies remix challenge.)
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master - arguably including pre-series Doctor/pre-series Master, pre-series Doctor/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Three/Crispy!Master and Five/Master. One thing it doesn't have is Pryce!Master, although he is listed on Teaspoon
Warnings: None listed, though there is sex and swearing and horror

Recced because: This fic was written in 2009, since when dark fairy tales and Doctor Who have become increasingly intertwined. If you like the sort of story where something terrible is presented as a good thing in beautiful, soothing language, you might like this fic - even if you think Doctor/Master isn't really your cup of tea.

I think a brief introduction is necessary, though, before you read it. This fic is a 'remix' (of sorts) of another fic I also like (Imaginary Worlds by x_los), which posits that, at some point, the young Master made a copy of the Doctor that lived in his mind and which he could interact with as though it were the real Doctor. He abandoned the copy for a time, but returned to it after the Doctor left Gallifrey/him. In the original fic, the copy/construct idea was played largely for laughs - but it's very creepy, really, particularly in a universe where thoughts can think for themselves (see- oh, I don't know... 'Castrovalva', for example).

This fic is an atmospheric and disturbing examination of that idea, and of obsession carried too far. Thus, it also functions as an excellent character study of the Master.

Intriguing analysis of their relationship and the way that the Master’s life revolves around the Doctor. And an adorably happy ending that you wish could really happen.
Excerpt: “This other creature, the Master’s mate, the Doctor, the only thing in the Master’s kingdom that could be his equal, was the focus of the Master’s life, and nothing brought him more joy than caring for his mate and seeing that he was as content as the Master. This seemed to the Master like something that had always been, a basic truth of nature. The sun rose and the night fell and he was bound eternally to the Doctor.”

Set to The Raven, with a brilliant eye for meter and turn of phrase, and some awesome references to Who canon and the original poem. It's amazing. Just click on the link, go! You will not regret it.

The summer of 1895, Jack's main (in point of fact, only) competition on the unkillables circuit went by the imposing name of Koshey the Deathless.

Jack is operating on limited information while the reader knows more, which is very effective in several places in particular.

x_los has ever written is brilliant. EVERYTHING. But of course, some brilliant fics are more brilliant than others, and one of those extra-brilliant fics is The Crane Wife. If you like slave!fic, you will like this story. If you don't like slave!fic, you will probably like this story anyway.

Warnings: It's a WIP, but only has the last chapter to go. Also explicit sex involving domination and a few consent issues.

Recced because: One of my favorite genres of fic is the cliche-done-right. The one that makes you realize why a subject is cliche in the first place: because it's awesome. This story is sweet, and adorable, and really funny. The Doctor and the Master, despite being alternate-universe counterparts, come off pitch-perfect. The descriptions are wonderful, the plot's engaging and well-paced, and the sex is really, really hot. What more could you ask for, other than the final chapter?

Recced because: This story is creepy, dark, and yet, at times, very funny. The Doctor, growing lazy and complacent as president of Gallifrey, suddenly finds himself reliant on the Master to save his life ... and also finds himself strangely attracted to his old enemy. The love/hate relationship between the two men drives much of this story, though there is still a murder mystery to solve, and I'll leave it to you to read the story and uncover the assassin's identity. (I guessed it about two-thirds of the way through, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.)

Recced because: this is the granddaddy of Five/Turlough fic, plain and simple. Even if you’ve never clapped eyes on this story, if you’ve ever read or written any Five/Turlough fic or meta or vague flailing in their direction, it’s probably been influenced by this one. Every pairing has its origin story and for them, this is it: one of the first (possibly the first: it’s been online since 98 at least) to explore the potential in a swishy blond Time Lord (complete with a kinky sadist for an ex-boyfriend) and an angsty ginger minx in school uniform. Thanks to the likes of

who_otp, these days it’s hard to imagine any pairing being ‘new’ – but think back to a fannish world where slash really was marginal: when there was only one fic to read. That’s how fanon is made.

This rec comes with provisos. This is not light reading: it’s long, the warnings are genuine, there’s melodrama aplenty, and the schmoopiness amidst all the h/c might well read like slash cliché these days. But this is a justified classic, chockfull of tension, angst, and the creeping sense of dread that suits the tail-end of the Five era down to the ground. If you've newly discovered Doctor/Master thanks to the new series: if you like your Turlough smushed to bits and chained to a wall (and lord knows, JNT seemed to): if you have even a passing interest in classic Who slash - well, this is how they kick it old-school.
