Story: Another Fine Mess
Author: Lyaka
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6310
Characters/Pairings: Three, Nine, Twelve, Missy, The Master (Delgado), The Brigadier, Twelve/Missy, Three/The Master (Delgado)
Author's Summary: Twelve gets careless in the lab and accidentally whips up a space/time paradox. The Brigadier is not amused. (Shameless multi-era sass fest.)
Warnings: None

Recced Because:

It's funny. It's really, really, really funny. Lyaka has written a comedy of witty sass, dark humour, forbidden love, and enough snark to cause a temporal paradox. Watching Doctors from different eras bicker at each other is something I always enjoy, and this fic delivers on that premise in spades. I dare you to get through it without giggling.

Story: Prey of the Cheetahs
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5869
Author’s Summary: There are strange things happening at Cambridge, and they seem to be connected with the appearance of a black cat. (A Three-era retelling of Survival.)
Characters/Pairings: Three/Delgado!Master (also Three/Cheetah!Delgado!Master); the Brigadier, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, and Sergeant Benton
Warnings: none

Recced because: Do you like cats? Do you enjoy this pairing? Then you, like I, probably spent the entirety of Survival with your jaw unhinged at the sheer amount of slash on the screen. I love the fandom trend of rewriting Survival with different Doctors and Masters, and this Three-era retelling shines, with well-written dialogue and characterization. For bonus points, it showcases the old-school UNIT crew, even to the point of including both Liz AND Jo. It’s just a shame there will never be a televised episode in which Delgado gets to rub up against Pertwee like an oversized cat.

Hello, Calufrax! I’m [livejournal.com profile] lyakahime (Lyaka on the Teaspoon). Thanks for having me. I’m a shipper, so most of what I rec will have some kind of relationship in it, but I’ve got a mix of pairings at the ready to entertain a variety of tastes. And now, without further ado…

Story: Placebo Effect
Author: Bagheera
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2411
Author’s Summary: The Master falls into his own trap.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, the old-school UNIT crew
Warnings: None

Recced because: Lighthearted without being frivolous, humorous without being cracky, and introspective without being melancholy, this lovely little fic has such perfect balance that everything seems effortless. There’s a real skill in taking one of the oldest, most overwrought clichés in the book – in this case, the mythical soul-bonding stone – and turning it into something that’s not only plausible, but has the reader cheering along. (How does she do this? The title provides a clue.)

Optimism and cheer are the tone of the fic, but there are currents hiding underneath that make me keep coming back to reread it. Insecurity is a powerful demon and one that never seems to quite stay dead. I’ve struggled with it, and I know many other fans do too. Beneath the good humor and banter, the deeper themes of self-esteem and security are deftly handled here, and the whole poses questions each reader will answer differently.

Story: Rosemary and Time
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=41783
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: PG-13
Summary: UNIT has finally found the Master, who went missing a month ago after being wounded. Relieved to hear the news, the Doctor finds that there's something still wrong with the Master. Uses the Master’s backstory from the Doctor Who novel “The Dark Path”, but reading the novel isn’t necessary to enjoy the fic.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, (Delgado) Master, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Doctor/Master pairing.
Warnings: None.
Recced because: Why should it always be the Doctor who loses his memory? This fic is a clever look at what would happen if the Master suffered amnesia. It’s a lovely, funny, sad, bittersweet story about what would happen if the Doctor and the Master were able to be friends again.
Excerpt: “It was, surprisingly enough, the Brigadier who made sure that no one commented or were allowed to collect on bets when Koschei had taken to sleeping in the Doctor's TARDIS, rather than the flat UNIT had provided for him. Or unsurprisingly, considering the man could be very discreet and the less said about office romances the better. The Doctor was more amused than anything, but he could tell Koschei at least appreciated the courtesy. Jo had been very put out, however, since she'd have won at least fifty pounds by his reckoning from earlier conversations he'd overheard.”

Story: Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I was an Architect remix)
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen (it says All Ages, but I might even go so far as to say Adult)
Word Count: 5897
Author's Summary: There is a room in the TARDIS that always stays locked. (Written for the best_enemies remix challenge.)
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master - arguably including pre-series Doctor/pre-series Master, pre-series Doctor/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Three/Crispy!Master and Five/Master. One thing it doesn't have is Pryce!Master, although he is listed on Teaspoon
Warnings: None listed, though there is sex and swearing and horror

Recced because: This fic was written in 2009, since when dark fairy tales and Doctor Who have become increasingly intertwined. If you like the sort of story where something terrible is presented as a good thing in beautiful, soothing language, you might like this fic - even if you think Doctor/Master isn't really your cup of tea.

I think a brief introduction is necessary, though, before you read it. This fic is a 'remix' (of sorts) of another fic I also like (Imaginary Worlds by x_los), which posits that, at some point, the young Master made a copy of the Doctor that lived in his mind and which he could interact with as though it were the real Doctor. He abandoned the copy for a time, but returned to it after the Doctor left Gallifrey/him. In the original fic, the copy/construct idea was played largely for laughs - but it's very creepy, really, particularly in a universe where thoughts can think for themselves (see- oh, I don't know... 'Castrovalva', for example).

This fic is an atmospheric and disturbing examination of that idea, and of obsession carried too far. Thus, it also functions as an excellent character study of the Master.

Story: The Doctor's 500 Year Diary
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=39493
Author: aralias
Characters: Third Doctor, The Master (Delgado), Jo, U.N.I.T.
Pairing: Third Doctor/The Master (Delgado)
Word Count: 2729
Rating: PG
Summary: In the course of the years recorded (unclear exactly how many), the Doctor confides his hopes, his dreams, his assessment of his wardrobe choices (v.g.) and his continual frustrations with the Time Lords - particularly the one who keeps annoyingly coming to visit him. It's difficult enough to keep his new regeneration resolutions already.
Why this must be read: It's hilarious! The Doctor's diary entries are hilariously snarky and really quite in character and his denial of his feelings for the Master is adorable. His friendship with Jo is also wonderful, going clothes shopping with her and talking to her about his conflicting feelings towards the Master. Completely adorable!
Excerpt: "10pm: Told Jo about the Master’s proposal. We both agreed that half a universe would give us significantly more wardrobe space, but that this wasn’t a good reason to accept a proposal from a ruthless megalomaniac, even if he is quite attractive and v polite. Am too young to get married/rule the universe anyway."

Story: Let it Snow!
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=45867
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: PG
Word Count: 5906
Author's Summary: The Doctor, the Brigadier, and Jo get pulled away to a winter wonderland, only to find the Master in the midst of a plot. Who will win the epic battle in the snow?
Characters: Third Doctor, The Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant. Pairing: Third Doctor/The Master (Delgado).
Warnings: None.
Recced because: It’s completely and utterly adorable! Sweet and fluffy while still keeping everyone in character. This is exactly the kind of silly plan that Delgado Master would come up with and this is exactly how the Doctor, Jo, and the Brigadier would react. Great dialogue, wonderful use of Jo’s point of view, and great portrayal of Three’s era and its kind of humor.

Story: Lead and Follow
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 11,223
Author's Summary: When the Doctor doesn't come to a moon the Master had taken over to stop him, the Master has to come up with a plot to get back the Doctor's attention: Learning how to dance West Coast Swing!
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)/OC, The Master (Delgado)/ The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (8th),
Warnings:. none

Recced because: My favorite part about reccing is having the chance to highlight a great story that folks might otherwise pass up. On the face of it, this story should be labeled “crack,” but given some of the Master’s absurd plots in canon, is learning West Coast Swing really that far-fetched? . Lizzie, the story’s original character, is well-crafted and interesting, and the plot is engaging. Best of all is the characterization of Delgado!Master, who manages to be sympathetic, charming and evil (if not completely so) all at the same time.

Author's Summary: "Infinity unfolds from even a line. The Doctor's sleeping mind has much to sort through."
Characters/Pairings: Three/Jo, Three/Delgado!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is an amazing piece of mathematical lyrical... awesome. Stunt_Muppet is fantastic at weaving images we've never seen and couldn't perceive if we had, out of the words s/he has to hand. In this instance, it's another Third Doctor post-exile story: a dream world where the Doctor is torn between Jo and the Master, between his earthbound past and the limitless future. Go, read, wonder. :-)

Story: Cold Comfort for Change
Author: birdsarecalling
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 22,575
Author’s Summary: In a universe where the Master works for the Celestial Intervention Agency, the Doctor and his companions inevitably find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, Adelaide Brooke, Original Companions
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because:

This is a story that begins in a zeppelin above an acid lake on an alien world and only gets better from there. If that isn’t enough to sell you, I’m not sure what else I could possibly say to change your mind.

Seriously, though: this fic is an AU wherein the Master (still calling himself Koschei) is an Agent of the CIA, Three has a fully-functional TARDIS, and they end up playing just the cat-and-mouse game you might expect. That would be brilliant enough, but what makes this fic exceptional is the unique Team TARDIS--Adelaide Brooke (much younger and with a wonderfully fleshed-out personality), Mohandas Gandhi, and Gamma, Twenty-Third Chief Executrix of the Google-Exxon Imperium--and the wonderful sense of humor with which it’s written. It’s a wildly enjoyable read, start to finish.

Story: Time Lords Made Us Do It
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 978
Author's Summary: After "End of Time", the Time Lords figure out that their only hope for survival is to give the drums to the Doctor. (Gallifrey crack fic).
Characters/Pairings: Romana 2, Braxiatel, Narvin, Leela, K-9, (various Doctor/Master in the background)

Recced because: Another Doctor/Master fic, but one that distinguishes itself by never actually featuring those characters. As the summary notes, this is a Gallifrey fic, first and foremost, and is largely about those brilliant characters trying to tackle a problem - that problem just happens to be making the Doctor and the Master have sex, something that some characters find discomforting (very funny), and others are completely fine with (also very funny). It's largely dialogue based, which works well in an audio fandom and with such distinct voices, it's well structured, and cleverly punctures the pomposity of much of 'End of Time'.

Excerpt: "Andred once showed me this psychic union you speak of," Leela said thoughtfully. "I was not impressed."

Coordinator Narvin made a horrible grimace that seemed to say: I did not need to know this. Romana privately agreed.

Story: Burning Ground
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2389
Author's summary: The Doctor and the Master play gods in Vedic India.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor/Delgado!Master, Fifth Doctor
Warnings: Goes AU somewhere near the end of the Third Doctor's tenure.

Recced because: It's good. It's very, very good. Which is probably damning with faint praise, but I've been staring at the computer screen for the past half-hour trying to figure out how to describe why I love this fic so much and that's really all it boils down to: it's very, very good. There's a relentless dream-like logic to Bagheera's prose and her alternate Fourth and Fifth Doctors are so very familiar despite the fantastic setting we find them in. It's perhaps my favorite Doctor/Master fic of all and I'm so very glad she wrote it.

Story: The Final Game
Author:[livejournal.com profile] x_los

Author's Summary: In which the Master wins, and the Doctor's attempts to talk his way out of it prove less than successful.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master
Warnings: Darkfic with consent issues.

Recced because: This story blew me away. I knew that x_los wrote some of the best Delgado!Master around, but I wasn't prepared for the power of this story and it nearly broke my brain. She understands them so well - their connection, their history, their obsessions - and she makes their relationship and all their questionable actions utterly believable. This is a very dark look at what the Master really wants from the Doctor and who these two men really are to each other.

Story: literally, the stars in their eyes
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1370
Author's summary: The universe isn't big enough for the two of them. AU after Claws of Axos.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, Benton
Warnings: none that I can think of

Recced because: It's the Third Doctor and the Delgado!Master trying to do domestic together and failing utterly. It's funny and witty and so very, very true. And because it's by livii, it goes without saying that the character voices are flawless. I could quote you all my favorite lines from this fic, but I'd end up quoting the whole fic. Just read it. It's good and unless you're completely allergic to slash or to Classic Who it will make you smile.

You might think a TARDIS, with its infinity of rooms and being much, much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, would be plenty big enough for two normal-sized, humanoid Time Lords.

You'd be dead wrong.

Author: Bagheera
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4156
Author's summary: Depressed by his exile, the Doctor spends a few hours with the Master.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master
Warnings: PWP

Recced because: The slashy possibilities of Three/Master practically leap off the screen in their serials. Here, that dynamic is captured in a well paced fic. The Doctor, angsting about his exile on Earth, encounters the Master. He stops to have a talk, which turns into more. Why would the Doctor tolerate the Master's presence? Well, his reasoning is plausibly explained and so are the Master's motives. The dialogue is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.
