Everyone's always busy on Mondays, so let's start week 2 with something short:

Story: Drabbling Through History
Author: Yamx
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 687
Author's Summary: Five drabbles connecting DW/TW characters with historical events/persons.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Amy Pond, Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: 100-word Drabbles are an interesting form of fiction, and are hard to write well - here Yamx has written six in which the Doctor and friends interact with various historical and legendary events. In view of the shortness of the chapters I haven't included an extract.

Story: To Please
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary:"I'm going out on a limb, here--is it a sex club?"
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit sex, BDSM

Recced because: This is the story that made dozens of people say, "I'm usually really not into BDSM, but I absolutely loved this story." (Seriously. If you read it on LJ rather than Teaspoon, you could see it in the comments. Over and over again.)

That's because it's not a story about BDSM. Oh, it contains plenty of BDSM, and if you are into that, you'll love it for that reason alone. But it's so much more.

As an asexual, I'm not only not into BDSM, I'm not into sex, period. I don't mind it, but it usually bores me. In most stories, I skim over the sex scenes. In this one, I didn't. This is the story that made me understand why sex in fiction can be important. It can be used simply as titillation for the reader, sure, and that's a perfectly valid use of it--which just happens to fall perfectly flat with me. But it can also be used as a tool to explore the characters in new ways--show them open and vulnerable and let the reader experience important moments of growth in their relationships. And that is what Canaan does in To Please.

This was the story that made me realize that if I wanted to truly be able to explore all facets of my characters' lives, I had to learn to write sex. I'd never written a single sex scene, nor felt any need to, before I read this story. It wasn't prudishness, I just literally didn't care. This story showed me why I should. If you've ever read anything remotely smutty by me and enjoyed it, you have this story to thank for it.

Story: Search and Rescue
Author: yamx
Rating: teen
Word Count: 2608
Author's Summary: Worried about the comatose Doctor, Jack makes a dangerous choice.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Rose Tyler/the Doctor (ninth)
Warnings: none

Recced because: There are some authors, and some stories, I just keep coming back to.

I think I discovered yamx while looking for stories about what happened between "The Doctor Dances" and "Boom Town," which is a rich, rich vein of fic that has been mined by excellent authors such as DameRuth, wmr, HonorH, RobinC—the list goes on and on.  yamx is one of many people who have started with "The Doctor Dances" and gone on to tell a rich, compelling, three-cornered love story, full of misunderstandings and cultural clashes and prickliness and, of course, kissing and making up.

For me personally, fics that involve telepathy are—is it possible to have nonsexual kinks?  Because if it is, telepathy is one of mine.  So are stories that acknowledge that the Doctor is different.  "Search and Rescue" does both, but despite the Doctor's acknowledged alienness, it's still very much a love story.  Love, as another fine author wrote on this site, crosses all sorts of boundaries.

So if it's late at night, and you're feeling a little low, and you just want something that makes you feel a bit of a warm glow before you head off to bed—well, I have a mental list of things to go read when that mood hits me, and "Search and Rescue" is on it.  Try it.  It might go on your list too.

The last two days sort of got away from me, but you get two recs from me today and two tomorrow to make up for it. Sorry for being a bit derelict in my duties!

Story: Through a Glass Darkly
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wendymr
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 30,957
Author's Summary: It’s only when she’s finally given up looking for a way back that she finds him.
Characters/Pairings: Alt!Nine/Alt!Jack Harkness/Rose Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler
Warnings: None
Recced because:

I can't believe this hasn't been rec'd here before! The extremely prolific and awesome [livejournal.com profile] wendymr regularly comes up with (IMNSHO) some of the most interesting AU premises in the Who fandom, and this one is my personal favorite. The changes that [livejournal.com profile] wendymr makes to the Pete's World!Doctor and Jack's back-stories are fascinating, and the way that she explores what those changes mean for the characters are even more so. And once you're done with this story, there's a bunch of others set in the same 'verse for you to enjoy!

Story: Relict
Author: Ninamusing
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 57,387+
Author's Summary: The TARDIS team dances around their new relationship. As they draw closer, the connection creates unexpected resonances.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This is Ninamusing's amazing H/C WIP. When I first encountered it, it grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go. It's a love story, but not one that shirks the darker moments these three are capable of. Both the characters and their adventures are 100% believable; if Doctor Who didn't run in a family-friendly timeslot, it might look like this. Even if you don't read works-in-progress, this one's worth getting into. No matter how long you have to wait for each new chapter, it will always be worth it.

This excerpt is the point in the first chapter where I was already hooked. )

Hi, I'm Canaan Alexander, and I'll be your reccer this week. What, you may ask, am I doing taking the time to make recommendations when there are so many other projects that I ought to be working on and stories I ought to be writing? I finally decided there were just too many amazing fics that no one else had recced here yet, and it was my fannish duty to make sure that everyone had been exposed to them.

I'll be reccing a fairly broad range of pairings across New Who, Classic Who, and Torchwood, but I'm very Jack-centric, so you'll find he turns up in most of them. :-) And now, on with the show!

Story: Well, You Know
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5006
Author's Summary: It is July in New New York, 099: the dawning of the latest and greatest era of beauty, freedom, truth and love, but mostly love. And when it comes to Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness, a lot of beauty. John Smith is so hopelessly in love with his two best friends that sometimes he thinks he could just about explode. But he's no one special. Not really.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: "Well, You Know" is an AU take on fobwatched!Nine, if he were still traveling with Rose and Jack. Roach Patrol's prose is beautiful, the setting she's chosen is the perfect vehicle for the story she's telling, and the story arc comes full circle so beautifully, it takes my breath away and bring tears to my eyes.

Story: An Overpowering Staleness
Author: Yamx
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 19,500
Author's Summary: The Doctor has to use the Chameleon Arch while traveling with Rose and Jack. What will happen, and how will it affect their relationship?
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I will be honest and say right up front that this is the fic [livejournal.com profile] yamx wrote for me when I won her in [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti - but even if it weren't, I'd be reccing it anyway, because it was so far beyond anything I ever hoped for when I gave her the prompt. A Chameleon Arch'd Nine isn't something many writers in the fandom have taken on, because, I think, it's difficult to think about: a Nine without the TARDIS, without his Time Lordliness, would be . . . a mess. [livejournal.com profile] yamx chooses to focus less on why Nine is hiding and more on how it affects him and his traveling companions, and just as in Human Nature/Family of Blood, that proves to be far more compelling.
[identity profile] sahiya.livejournal.com
*waves* Hello, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] sahiya and I'll your reccer this week. I'll probably rec primarily New Who, where my favorite pairings are Jack/Doctor/Rose and Jack/Doctor. But I'm going to try and rec some Classic Who as well.

Today we have one of my very favorite stories ever.

Story: The Lovers
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11k
Author's Summary: Rose wants to see something really different. Jack wants the Doctor to quit shying away from him. Nobody wants what they actually get, or it wouldn't be Doctor Who.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Dark and slightly gruesome in parts.

Recced because: This fic fits into [livejournal.com profile] canaana's Major Arcana series, which goes AU as of "Parting of the Ways." But I think this story stands on its own pretty well, and is my favorite of the series for the way it deals with Jack's immortality. It's grim and difficult in parts, but the payoff is worth it, and [livejournal.com profile] canaana's characterization of Jack is, as always, stellar.

Story: Sohcahtoa
Author: Petra LeMaitre
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7127
Author's Summary: One of the first truths the Doctor had tried to instill in her, and in so many of his travelling companions, was that it was never too late to run.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I couldn't go through this week without reccing a fic about my OT3. This fic is a hidden gem for this 'ship, and I'd recommend it even to those who don't ship them, because it is above all a fascinating foray into the Ninth Doctor's mind. Petra LeMaitre gives us a very interesting perspective on how Time Lords perceive the world. The banter between these three is also adorable enough to warm any heart.

Story: Early Days

Author: sahiya

Rating: All Ages

Word Count: 3973

Author's Summary:
It had been one of the more miserable nights of Jack Harkness's life.

Characters/Pairings: The Ninth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, hints of Doctor/Jack/Rose

Warnings: None

Recced because: If you like hurt/comfort fics, (like me) then you’ll probably love this. It’s angsty, with some subtle shippyness and cute thrown in, and the fact that it has our favorite trio, Nine, Jack, and Rose, makes It even better!

Story: Striking Roots
Author: DameRuth
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4514
Author's Summary: After the Doctor suffers a terrible shock in the Flowers!verse, it's up to Rose and Jack to comfort him and each other.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose/Jack (in a fashion)
Warnings: Sex, angst

Recced because: This is part of DameRuth's very original and creative Flowers series. The basic premise is that though the Doctor loves Rose deeply, there are way too many biological barriers--physical and chemical--for them to become lovers. Thus, Jack becomes Rose's lover, not just because he loves her himself, but as the Doctor's surrogate. I recommend the whole series for its creativity and sense of melancholy. (Later in the series, Jack, being Jack, finds a way around the biological barriers, but by then, Rose is gone. Thus, Jack and Ten become lovers.)

Anyway, to the story: Our trio come across the horrifying aftermath of a fobwatched Time Lord gone terribly wrong. The Time Lord (unnamed) is long dead, and the fobwatch itself, containing the Time Lord's essence, has become a lethal object of temptation to anyone who finds it. Its discovery sends the Doctor into an emotional tailspin. Jack and Rose can take comfort in each other, but they can't offer the same to him--or can they? The story is told in gorgeous language, the bittersweet dynamic amongst the three of them laid bare as comfort is sought and given.

Story: Triangles
Author: Adalia Zandra
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6975
Author's Summary: It is a well known fact that triangles are the strongest of all architectural structures. There’s a reason for that.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: Anyone who knows me is well aware that I'm exceptionally fond of Nine/Jack/Rose OT3 stories.  Some well-done hurt/comfort doesn't exactly go awry, either.  In this story, one of our fandom's real masters of h/c takes my fave threesome and runs them through the emotional blender, beautifully.  There's no sex but plenty of love, and some really nice Nine-POV work.  It's a rough ride with a wonderfully cuddly ending, and a great way to start the new year.  :D

Story:
  Reset
AuthorGillian_Taylor ([livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis  on LJ)
Rating:  Teen
Word Count:  16,465
Author's Summary:  Time isn't a straight line. Sometimes it loops back before going forward again. Sometimes it's meant to do that. Most of the time it isn't.
Characters/Pairings:  Nine/Rose/Jack

Recced because:  Suspense?  Check.  Banter?  Check.  Bonding and UST for our favorite trio?  Check.  A smidgen of angst?  Check.  Plot that will have you racing to find out what happens?  Check, check, and more check.  Timey-wimey stuff?  Check.

On a visit to Mars in the future, Nine, Jack, and Rose become stuck in a Groundhog Day-style time loop that only the two humans remember.  From a wonderfully eerie beginning to an intriguingly (and amusingly) ambiguous ending, this clever story is a fun read.  The characterization is impeccable whether the trio is engaged in flirty banter or exploring the emotional repercussions of living one day over and over with no consequences.  Plan to read the whole thing at once if you can, because the chapter-ending cliffhangers make sure that stopping mid-story is not an option you want to take.

Story: Link
Author: DameRuth
Rating: adult
Word Count: 2314
Author's Summary: The story of how a certain Class II somatic/empathic linkage was forged in the first place. AU Rose/Jack/Nine OT3 -- story begins just after "Boom Town," everything having followed canon till this point.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor/Rose/Jack
Warnings: None
Recced because: It was easy for me to decide to rec DameRuth's "Bliss" series. There's very little not to love in this group of fun, well-written, creatively-imagined , sometimes emotionally gripping and sometimes hilarious AU stories set in a universe that didn't include Parting of the Ways. The difficulty was deciding which story to recommend, because they're all so uniformly good. I settled on "Link," because it marks the chronological beginning of the series and tells the story of how an unexpected turn in the Rose/Nine/Jack relationship became the foundation of the Bliss!verse. ("Link" beat out "The Shared Path" by a very small nose; if you like the first, I urge you to go and read the second.) Added bonus: Nine rockin' the long hair.

Story: Decanted Memories
Author: amberite
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 6576
Author's Summary: The past is best served as a flaming cocktail. Takes place between "The Doctor Dances" and "Boomtown." And when you think you’re swimming to the surface You’re swimming - straight down -- Laurie Anderson, “Freefall”
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose/Jack
Warnings: BDSM
Recced because: This story about Jack's memory, the reality and unreality of the TARDIS, and the power of friendship, is remarkable, and beautifully told. Jack's and Rose's conversations are pure pleasure to read, because they tell the reader so much about the characters - and about the way people learn about each other. The writing is dense, full of wisdom, mesmerizing images, and a solid story that still manages to shimmer with beauty.

Story:  "We're Hers"
Author: aibhinn
Rating:  Adult
Word Count: 4708
Author's summary: "At a Halloween party in a London club, Rose runs into an old boyfriend…and gets in over her head."
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose, Jackie Tyler
Warnings: None, unless you haven't seen S1 from "The Empty Child" on . . .

Recced because:
As some folks here might know, I'm a great fan of the Doctor/Jack/Rose OT3 (with either Nine or Ten), and this story is ( to me, anyway) a lovely example of that combination.  It's also a great "warm fuzzies" piece, as Jack and the Doctor get to be all protective of Rose, she's grateful . . . and ultimately a very good time is had by all.  ;)

Story: Rewrite
Author: FyrDrakken
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5459
Author's summary: You only get one chance to be in one time and place. Only one chance to alter the course of events before you have to let them go. But he knows the way to cheat, too. History is really just recorded memory. And memories can be altered. Erased. Even rewritten.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, Nine/Rose, Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Time Lord memory tampering.

Recced because: It's deliciously creepy in a very low-key way. The Doctor only wants to make his first time with Rose Tyler something worth remembering, but he's going about it the entirely wrong way and in the back of his mind he might even realize it. I'm not usually all that into Doctor/Rose or Doctor/Jack/Rose fics at all, but I keep coming back to this one. Go read it.
