Hi, I'm Canaan Alexander, and I'll be your reccer this week. I'll be reccing mostly New Who and a little Torchwood, and there may be more than one story by the same author in here--too many people I wanted to rec have neglected to put their stories on Teaspoon for us. *g* Fortunately, there are plenty of delightful ones left to choose from. Let's start with . . .

Story: Left Behind
Author: azriona
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 14366
Author's Summary: After a hundred and fifty years, Jack Harkness is used to saying goodbye. He's just getting the hang of saying hello.
Characters/Pairings: (Ten)/Rose/Jack
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is the first Pete's World OT3 reunion story I've ever read that isn't really AU. The premise for getting all three characters into Pete's World is very clever, but that's not why you'll want to read it. You'll want to read it because it's the story of the growing up Rose had to do while stranded in an alternate universe between the end of s2 and the end of s4. It deals with heartache and loss as well as the decisions we ultimately make to go on with the rest of our lives after loss . . . all before Rose ever gets Donna to turn left.

If you like this story, please remember to leave the author a comment. Authors like comments, even if they're as simple as "I really like this." It makes us write more.

*waves* Hello all! I'm glad to be back reccing on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax.

Story: Asleep at the Switch
Author: [livejournal.com profile] 51stcenturyfox
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4076
Author's Summary: "If the Doctor can't straighten us out - I could be a showgirl, Rose."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Jack Harkness/Rose Tyler
Warnings: Explicit sex
Recced because:

This fic, in which Rose and Jack end up bodyswapped and then have oodles of sex, is beautifully written, very funny, and scorching hot. Enjoy!

Story: "And Always"
Author: rallalon
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2182
Author's Summary: "'Hello,' Rose replies, tugging the Doctor’s overcoat tighter around her, brown-dyed hair brushing softly against the lapels."
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Sexual situations/language.

Recced because: This story is part of an AU series, "Held at a Distance," the first story of which has already been recced here.  It's an OT3 tale with a difference: in this 'Verse, the team keep in touch after TPOTW, but Jack's "wrongness" causes the Doctor to be violently, physically ill if two of them get too close ("too close" being "within thirty feet of one another").  As a result, Jack has separated from the others but they stay in periodic contact, with Rose acting as the go-between.  In this (very explicit) story, Rose and the Doctor conspire to give Jack a special, unexpected surprise during one of her visits; the love and longing are achingly palpable and vividly memorable, turning what could have been a simple PWP (if an exceptionally well-written one) into one of the most sweetly heartbreaking stories you'll ever read.  (Be sure to read the whole series, while you're there -- well worth it!!)

Story: Cheating Time
Author: Gillian Taylor ([livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis @ LJ) and wmr ([livejournal.com profile] wendymr @ LJ)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 36,414
Author's Summary: He's saved the universe over and over again. He's lost everything, including his own race. Doesn't the universe owe him something in return?
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler/Jack Harkness
Warnings: None

Recced because: Ten attempts to get Rose back by taking her from himself pre-"Doomsday." Needless to say, this will all end in tears. Gillian Taylor and wmr create a fascinating, believable alternate reality dealing with the aftermath of Ten's decision--and their ultimate solution for rewriting the timeline *and* solving both the "Doomsday" dilemma and the problems caused by Ten's selfish mistake is jaw-droppingly brilliant.

Story: The Judas Series
Author: wmr @ Teaspoon / [livejournal.com profile] wendymr @ LJ
Rating: Adult
World Count: 85,560
Author's Summary: The Doctor: betrayer of those he loves, or just irreparably damaged?
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler/Jack Harkness
Warnings: None

Recced because: Ever read a series that's so bloody fantastic you wish it were canon? Actually, there was that meme going around a while ago that asked if you were in charge of Season Four, what would you have happen? My answer would be this fic. OK - the beginning would have to be tweaked a bit to fit in with "Utopia," but, except for that, this would pretty much be it. (Taking into account, of course, if I "were in charge," things like "actor availability," "budget restraints," and "pre-watershed hour" wouldn't exist.)

I thought [livejournal.com profile] wendymr captured Ten so well--including his inability to shut up, even during sex. I liked how she portrayed Jack and Rose, individually, (eventually) as a married couple, and as a part of the OT3 relationship. I thought it was also perfect how the Doctor returned to them after losing another companion. I even admired the details in these stories--like making that lost companion, Lauren, a travel agent: someone who sends other people to wonderful places but never went herself. There's more I want to praise, but I think I may have spoiled too much of the series already!
Honestly, this is my favorite Whoniverse fanfic ever and one of my favorite novel-length fics, in any fandom.

My final two recs are explicitly ship-fics, but chosen because they stand out among a multitude of ship-fics in the modern Who era. Relationships, romance, even sex, but not as you’d expect, and again stories to make the reader think. If you’re interested in seeing Doctor/companion stories done well, try these last two recs of mine.

Story: At Thirty Paces
Author: Rallalon

Rated: Adult

Author’s summary: He's not coming. Not tonight.

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Estelle Cole. Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose/Jack; Tenth Doctor/Rose; Rose/Jack; Tenth Doctor/Jack, Jack/Estelle Cole, Jack/Ianto.

Warnings: Adult, Explicit Sex

Recced because: Here, finally, is an explanation for Jack’s ‘wrongness’ that I can accept and completely get behind, and an AU in which the Doctor doesn’t completely abandon him. It’s not an easy story to read, because it’s a painful, tragic love story in which no-one gets a happy ending. Yet it’s haunting, sticking in my mind for a long time after I read it. The Doctor is actually ‘allergic’ to Jack: if he comes any closer to Jack than a distance of thirty feet, he’s in excruciating pain. This is the story, in part, of how the three of them deal with that over the century-plus of Jack’s living the slow path (they space out Rose’s life, ‘rationing’ her so that Jack doesn’t lose her too soon), and it’s also how Jack copes with the slow path, and with his own doomed relationships while he waits. Waits for the Doctor, and for Rose, who almost never come. Tissue-warning, I think.
