Recced because: I love fic that fills in the gaps in-between episodes, especially (as in this case) some big changes happen, and also fics that follow up with the companions after their official story is over. This fic does both, and in an elegant and concise manner that few fics manage. When I read this fic, it immediately became my head-canon for what must have happened. Although Martha and Mickey have just met here, it becomes clear (without having to be said directly) why they make sense together. But the fic isn't just about how Martha and Mickey ended up together; it's also about Martha finding her own way, on her own terms.

Recced because: This is a very fun, enjoyable fic that has pretty much every nuWho companion out there, as well as three different Doctors. Incredibly well written, with a strong, even representation of opposing characters, and some fantastic plot twists. It's one of my favorites that she's written, because she handles the complexity of dealing with so many different characters and emotions all at once in such a masterful and brilliant way.

Recced because: This is one author that I go back to over and over again. Seriously! Go give her love. That said, the reason I chose this fic in particular is because of the range of things it covers that just ring 'Doctor Who' in my books. Martha being awesome (another reason is because of her qualification this week in

f_march_madness), the Doctor not being perfect, people being people and difficult and just... real. And warm. It's got laughs, and it's got bits that really take out your heart and stamp on it, but it's also got heart, and really, that's what a fic should be all about... It's a long one to start, but well worth the time to sit down, maybe with a cup of tea, and drink it all in.

Recced because: I mentioned earlier this week that I feel Martha was owed so much more by the Doctor for what she was through. I'm quite fond of fics where the Doctor is faced with all the horrors Martha that happened to her in his name, and Hallucinations is an amazing example of that genre. It's timey-wimey and a bit confusing and heartbreaking and a very realistic take of the world under Harold Saxon's rule. The splash of Eleven, Amy and Rory is a bitter-sweet addition.

I may have mentioned I like crossovers. This one's a beautiful Highlander cross and does real justice to both fandoms, and does it with style. You don't have to know much about Highlander to enjoy it. Just revel in the extent to which Mickey takes everything in his stride - he's come a LONG way!

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. It really doesn’t seem that long since the last time I took this awesome responsibility back in early September when Doctor Who and Torchwood were both rounding off and I was a lot freer than I am now, as since then I’ve started my rather extensive postgraduate degree. Still, can’t be so difficult to find some quality fics from all eras of Who, right?

Now to begin we’ll start with some episode tweaking within the still much loved Tenth Doctor era…

Story: A Complicated Event In Time And Space

Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!

Story: The One with the Cotton Candy and the Batteries

Author's summary: It's 2012, and a bloke in leather pisses Mickey Smith off at the supermarket.

Recced because: A couple of my recs this week are quirky timey-wimey stories, and here's the first of them. A man walks into a supermarket... yes, really! It's 2012, and Mickey Smith is minding his own business as he hunts down acceptable snacks in the supermarket - until he's accosted at the checkout by a man in black leather with big ears wanting to borrow a quid. While the Doctor wants to know what Mickey's doing in 2012, Mickey has a much more important question: why on earth is the Doctor buying batteries?

It's funny and unexpectedly sweet, and I loved it. You may need to suspend disbelief just a little given how different 2005 Mickey looks from End of Time Mickey, but the story's good enough to ignore that.

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song

Author's Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's traveled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones’ family
Warnings:. none

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.
