Recced because: I love stories where people keep skirting straightforward talk, but communicate the real facts in the interstices: The Ninth Doctor can't quite tell the Brig about the Time War, the Brig can't quite tell the Doctor he's dying, but slowly the truth comes out of its own volition. It's not at all unrelieved angst, though--there's a good deal of whimsical humor, the easy casual conversation of old friends and the Brig, in his own fashion, celebrating the ultimate worth of his "small" human life. (The Doctor's many ill-fated attempts at home repair also amused me far too much.) If you want a story that really captures the special relationship between the Doctor and the Brig through the decades, this one is an excellent choice.
