Because I was apparently orbiting Neptune yesterday, I neglected to give this week's reccers actual, you know, posting access so as to rec anything. [livejournal.com profile] kindkit and [livejournal.com profile] kitsunealyc, you now have posting access and my sincere apologies.

Story: Nine and a Half
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: The Doctor's regeneration goes wrong. How wrong? Well, this was written for a zombie-themed ficathon...
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: Admittedly, you can sell me on nearly anything if you say the five magic words: "It's got zombies in it." That said, this story of "The Parting of the Ways" gone pear-shaped also stands out by virtue of being exceedingly funny, with an admirably unflappable Rose and a Doctor who, in the most literal sense possible, loves her for her braiiiiiiiiiins mind. A nice bit of cracky fun for all your crackfic needs.

Coming to you live from the Time Vortex, it's TARDIS Week! All week long, I'll be reccing fics wherein our favorite blue Police Box takes a starring (or at least active) role.

Hang on. It's going to be a bumpy ride -- because that's the way the Doctor likes it!

Story: Interlude and Storm
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Adult-ish
Word Count: 11,236
Author's Summary: After the Time War and the Doctor’s subsequent regeneration, the Tardis decides to take advantage of their first landing (and a new use of her energy) to deal with a few concerns of her own.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic explores a very long-term relationship that transcends friendship, romance or companionship. It has a slow build, a satisfying climax, and a poignant ending. There are some humorous moments, some awkward moments, and some intensely beautiful moments. The entire thing resounds with the feeling that these two have been together for a very long time, and know each other more intimately than the limitations of mortal flesh. I strongly recommend this for those of you who were hoping that Kylie's Astrid was something more than a human-shaped waitress.

Story: And I Will No Other to Follow Me Where I'm Going
Author: Aces ([livejournal.com profile] wishfulaces)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4225
Author's Summary: "Hang about," Fitz had asked once, very early on when this whole thing started. "Didn't you already destroy your planet, once?"
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Fitz Kreiner (with some Eight/Fitz), Romana
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The Eighth Doctor was rather screentime-deprived, with just the TV movie, but he did feature in a fascinating series of novels called the Eighth Doctor Adventures. This story is set between the end of EDA canon and the beginning of the new series--which is to say, during the time war that leads to the destruction of Gallifrey. Unsurprisingly, it's a story about things falling apart, and particularly about the Doctor falling apart as he gradually realizes that there's no solution except the worst possible one. Meanwhile, Fitz, the Doctor's companion through fifty EDA novels, tries to hold things together. And dreams.

Aces beautifully captures the feeling of a universe that's collapsing as time turns angry, and she portrays the characters and their emotions with subtlety and depth. The characterization is so good that I think this story will work even for people who haven't read any of the EDAs. And for EDA fans (not to mention Fitz fans) this story provides an ending that feels right, whereas the EDAs themselves just . . . stop.

(Making up for yesterday's forgotten rec:)

Story: Smile Like You Mean It
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: At the end, the Doctor didn't leave.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/Grace Holloway, the Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: Grace Holloway is never going to win any Most Popular Companion contests, but I always enjoy watching her respond to the Doctor's TARDIS invitation with, "You come with me!" In this story the Doctor does exactly that, and the slow mutual realization of how wrong they are for each other no matter how hard they try makes for painful, sad and fascinating reading. Even if the TV movie made you dyspeptic (nobody could blame you), this story will show you another side of Grace's character and her conflicted, sometimes contentious relationship with the Doctor. To be read when in the mood to indulge in a good bout of melancholy.

(Making up for yesterday's missed rec)

Coming to you live from the Time Vortex, it's TARDIS Week! All week long, I'll be reccing fics wherein our favorite blue Police Box takes a starring (or at least active) role.

Hang on. It's going to be a bumpy ride -- because that's the way the TARDIS rolls!

Story: Divinity
Author: Red Light Special
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2792
Author's Summary: The key fits, but the lock doesn't turn, and someone really wants the door to open.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Nine/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic is parts disturbing, parts erotic beyond imagining. The prose is haunting in a way that hints at how very alien the two main characters are. As a Rose shipper, I can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for her in this fic, but there's still something about it that rings very right with me (y'know... assuming that the Doctor has a sexuality at all).
