Recced because: Pelman's a brand-new author on the Teaspoon, but very, very good; I actually dragged him over here from FFnet so I could rec one of his stories! ;-)

"Five Times: Rose" is a Nine post-regeneration fic, a genre that seems to bring out the best in New Who writers. The premise is simple - five times Nine saw Rose during the episode "Rose", what he thought and why he did what he did each time. The premise isn't what makes the story.

Pelman takes us on Nine's mental journey through that episode, from "I'm the Doctor, by the way" to "Did I mention it also travels in time?" He shows us the real process of regeneration - not the physical change from McGann to Eccleston, but the emotional regrowth, starting with the empty shell of the Destroyer of Worlds and concluding in the manic joy of the healer who has been healed. And he does it all without artsy syntax or stream-of-consciousness narration.

I love Nine; I'm not so fond of Rose. But whatever your preferences in that matter - even if you have somehow managed to entirely avoid New Who - "Five Times: Rose" is a beautifully-crafted story of the Doctor, and well worth your time to read.
