Another Tenth Doctor story—a longer one, this time, since we’re heading into the weekend. This is set between Series 3 and 4, and the Doctor is traveling alone.
Story: Breaking Up the Ground
Author: Kalirush (

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 17,744
Author's Summary: Catherine slammed on the brakes. Her car skidded to a stop a few feet in front of the man standing in the middle of the road, hunched over and staring wildly at her car. His features were thin and knifelike in her headlights, and his hand shone red and wet as he shielded his eyes from the glare.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, original characters
Warnings: none
Recced because: I’m an American, and I enjoy reading about my favorite alien visiting my part of the planet. It’s set in the very ordinary city of Columbus, Ohio. (If Columbus had a sister city in the UK, it would probably be Leeds or maybe Glasgow.) The Doctor’s new friends, Catherine and Jessi, are a pair of ordinary women--a lab technician and a grad student--leading a quiet, happy life together in Columbus. Then Catherine encounters the Doctor: injured and on the run from government agents who have drained most of the power from the TARDIS.
These are not Mary Sues. They’re not brilliant or brave or heroic, and they really don’t want to get involved with aliens and intrigue, but when the Doctor is around, so-called ordinary humans often find that they are capable of extraordinary things.
The story mixes drama with humor, and Kalirush gets the Doctor’s voice just right.
