Another Tenth Doctor story—a longer one, this time, since we’re heading into the weekend.  This is set between Series 3 and 4, and the Doctor is traveling alone.

Story: Breaking Up the Ground
Author: Kalirush ([livejournal.com profile] gaia_lulia on LJ)
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 17,744
Author's Summary: Catherine slammed on the brakes. Her car skidded to a stop a few feet in front of the man standing in the middle of the road, hunched over and staring wildly at her car. His features were thin and knifelike in her headlights, and his hand shone red and wet as he shielded his eyes from the glare.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, original characters
Warnings: none

Recced because: I’m an American, and I enjoy reading about my favorite alien visiting my part of the planet.  It’s set in the very ordinary city of Columbus, Ohio.  (If Columbus had a sister city in the UK, it would probably be Leeds or maybe Glasgow.)  The Doctor’s new friends, Catherine and Jessi, are a pair of ordinary women--a lab technician and a grad student--leading a quiet, happy life together in Columbus.  Then Catherine encounters the Doctor: injured and on the run from government agents who have drained most of the power from the TARDIS.

These are not Mary Sues.  They’re not brilliant or brave or heroic, and they really don’t want to get involved with aliens and intrigue, but when the Doctor is around, so-called ordinary humans often find that they are capable of extraordinary things.

The story mixes drama with humor, and Kalirush gets the Doctor’s voice just right.

Catherine ignored that. “If you’re an alien, how come you sound like you’re English?”

“What?” His face twisted up in an expression of disbelief. “I bring you aboard my magnificent, gorgeous, incredible ship-” he reached over and patted one of the walls gently, lovingly “-I tell you I’m an alien, from another planet, and you’re asking about my accent? I will never understand you apes. I dunno. I just do. I lived in England for a while. I happen to like it there- they’ve got jelly babies, and proper chips, and I’ve hardly ever been stabbed there.”

Takes place in Columbus, OH, does it?

(Bolding is mine.)

He took her offered hand, his blood-smeared face contorted with pain. “My ship. I’ve got to get to my ship.” His accent was clipped, and clearly foreign.

Catherine looked at him strangely, as she helped him up. His dark suit was soaked, sticky with blood. “Ship? We’re days away from any body of water big enough to sail on!

I'm the author, and yes, that's a pretty big geography fail. In my defense, I'd just moved to Ohio from Florida, and the ocean was so very far away... and also I had an exaggerated idea of how far away the Great Lakes were.

But in my brain, Cath and Jess had also moved to Ohio in the last few years (for Jessi's school) and so she might reasonably screw it up, too? Look, the character screwed it up, not me! Really! ;)

Well I live in Pittsburgh (have done for years) and didn't blink at the line; you don't really think about Lake Erie as givig rise to many shipfaring ports.
