Story: Handyman
Author: pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,952
Author's Summary: Donna's begun having terrible headaches, and Shaun struggles to help her.
Characters/Pairings: Donna/Shaun, Wilf, Sylvia
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is one of the sweetest, most poignant Donna fix-it fics I've read, not in the least because it finally gives us a good idea of who Shaun might be, and why Donna would have fallen for him. Shaun is utterly devoted to Donna, and when she starts freezing up and repeating words like "neurohyperbolicencephalostabilizer," he finds a way to help her that no doctor (or Doctor) could. Ultimately, it isn't just Shaun's cobbled-together machine that restores Donna's memories: it's his fierce love for her, and his unwillingness to give up despite his fears and uncertainty.
Excerpt:
It takes some creativity to turn a toaster, three circuit boards and a bed spring into a "flux inverter coil," whatever that is, but the challenge of it comforts him, makes him happy. And if he didn't know better he'd think that it makes Donna happy too, somehow. Whenever he comes up from the garage, dirty and smudged and smiling, she looks at him and her face brightens a little. When she does that he can't help himself; he hurries over to her, gives her a kiss.
Once, when he kisses her, she cups his face in her hands and murmurs, "My handyman. Who needs doctors when I've got you, eh?"
Shaun spends the entire day happy, and Donna seems to be doing better, too, and he hopes that maybe the end of it is in sight.

Date: 2011-03-05 02:21 pm (UTC)When are you recc'ing? I am in 2 weeks, so I have some time to seek out an alternate =) The only complication is that this was gonna be one of my "variety" fics lol, because generally my own personal fic preferences are HIGHLY similar. I know I can't rec that way, so I found gems like this to put in my rec list! It's normally very hard for me to find "variety" fics I enjoy reading as much as this one + a few others nobody has recc'd yet.
