Greetings! I post as Allonym on the Teaspoon and I will be your reccer this week. As usual, I’ve tried to find a variety of recs - hope you find something you like.

Story: Practical Mythology
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 14,263
Author's Summary: Jack Harkness is a conman and a survivor. He doesn't believe in legends. And he shouldn't be running towards the invisible menace—but he is.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings:. Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: There are a lot of great “Jack finds his place on the TARDIS” stories, but this one is my favorite. Lyricwritesprose does a wonderful job with the little details that bring a story to life and give it depth. The Doctor especially is well characterized, his many facets revealed as Jack puzzles out his traveling companions.

This is one of my favorite stories. Okay, look at my "favorites" on Teaspoon and it's getting rather long, but it's one of my favorite favorites, and for so many reasons.

As I said in my review on Teaspoon, I am a sucker for world-building, myth inspiring, alien stuff, and this one certainly ticked all of the boxes. But when I read it again via this rec, I was caught up in the really dead-on characterizations. And in first person, yet, which isn't easy to pull off effectively - especially as Jack is putting together the pieces of the mystery surrounding the Doctor and Rose and the TARDIS. The writer developed Jack beautifully and, through his eyes, the Doctor and Rose, as well - giving us glimpses into the bedrock that is their relationship and how it came to inspire such devotion in a legion of fic-writing/reading fans.

Thank you for shining the spotlight on this story!

Thank you for reccing this. I want every New Who fan to read it, because it's not only a good story, but makes you love and understand the characters even more deeply than you did before you read it.
