[personal profile] eve11 posting in [community profile] calufrax
Hello again! It's me, [livejournal.com profile] eve11, ready for another round of recs. You know, I checked the tags and I've done 50 recs for this comm! So, starting the next 50:

Title: Pack Up the Moon and Dismantle the Sun
Author: TygerTyger ([livejournal.com profile] easytheretyger on LJ)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 16532
Author's Summary: River hasn’t seen her Doctor in a very long time and decides to request opportunities to work towards a pardon. The only offer comes from the last organisation she would want, the Church.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, River, Amy and Rory
Warnings: Swearing

Recc'ed Because: This is a look at the events leading up to early series 5, in a new light entirely, from River's perspective in Stormcage. It's a difficult story to read: we all knew her lines from series 6 about losing the Doctor by degrees, but in this story you actually see it. You have a River who by virtue of their twisted timelines, has spent years alone in Stormcage and who is not sure she will ever see the man she loves again, or if she does, if he will recognize her. It presents a very realistic motivation in her working with the Church and Father Octavian. It's sad but hopeful, and tells a story on the edges of another unfolding story; the story of a life well-lived that ends where we know it will but makes it all the more moving for knowing the road that led there. It reads like a novel, effortless and forthright but painting a picture in scene and dialogue, with recognizable characters throughout and fully realized original characters in the wings as well.

River sighed as the warden and guards left her alone with the cleric. He moved to the other side of the table and took a seat. His face was lined, but still handsome in a blunt sort of way. He was wearing a green dress-uniform, brass buttons shined smooth. The left breast of his coat bore stripes of accolades from the various missions he had been part of and she wondered if one of them was for Demon’s Run. Had he been there amongst the clerics who stole her away, even before her own father could hold her?

There was a quality to the bitterness she bore that never faded; the reminders were with her every day. The prisoner identification chip injected into the flesh of her arm, her cell, her loneliness. One of the reasons she had originally wanted a pardon was to be able to escape those reminders. Once her other reasons had disappeared off in that blue box, it was the only one she had left, and over time it had become enough. She needed to move on.

I remember you telling me back when this was being posted that I should read it, and me being like, oh, I am too impatient for either multi-chapter fics or WIPs. (Which in, retrospect, sounds hilarious even to me, because, well, you know why. But as a general rule, I don't have the attention span.) But then when the last chapter went up I read the whole thing pretty much at once, because my wi-fi was being a derp and wouldn't load well so my attention span problem got temporarily fixed. AND IT WAS A FANTASTIC STORY, YOU WERE RIGHT. And it was so good that I overcame my attention span issues to read another of her stories that was like 11k.

All of this rambling to say, Yes, this is a good rec, and I second it.

 I was right, though...

(Hmm, so I need to hack into the comm and make ONE more now, don't I? I must have recced as many times as you have before this week, then, presumably.)

But LOL. Okay, I'm less impressed now, sorry... ;-p

ETA: just looked at the tags and I'm probably missing something but if I'm reading aright that makes you and I next most prolific reccers after [livejournal.com profile] livii. You, of course, have now beaten me, though and totally deserve the congrats. *plots evil plots*

Ah, now that sounds much more likely! But your 50th rec is still an achievement. :-)
