Recced because: It's rare to see a story about the Doctor without any of his companions. This one, by an author who hasn't been recced here before, shows how his instincts can lead him into trouble when he's on his own...
There, over a small rise of snow was a large pale orange furry striped body, motionless. On closer inspection, he could see it breathing slowly, steadily.
"Tyger, tyger burning bright..." the Doctor breathed, stepping closer to get a better look.
The Doctor had guessed right about it being a female, probably about five to six years old. About middle age. He took a long, thick branch protruding from the snow, and gently tapped at the tiger's hide. There was no response.
Creeping up slowly with his head low, the Doctor approached the tiger's side. It didn't move, which was a bad sign. It didn't even have enough strength to defend itself.
The Doctor saw a large gash running down the animal's front right leg, blood still dripping heavily from the wound. It looked like it might have gotten caught in a trap, or maybe she got in a scuffle with another tiger. Either way, it was loosing plenty of blood, and needed to be fixed quickly. The tigress could easily die with a wound such as this. Even if it healed, she would have trouble hunting, and would eventually die of starvation.
"Oh, dear," the Doctor sighed. "You are in a bit of a spot, aren't you?"
