Recced because: This is one of my absolute favorite stories in the Who fandom; it is, in fact, the one I signed up to recommend. Doyle does a spot-on Evelyn voice, with beautifully-characterized appearances from Six and Barbara. The ending always makes me catch my breath as Evelyn's mysterious Christmas errand turns out to be both less and more than it appears. Finally, the prose is wonderful, with so many little quotable snippets that I had serious trouble picking a sample for you.
“My car’s parked just around the corner.” This was true, if for ‘car’ one read ‘TARDIS’ and for ‘parked’, ‘landed behind a conveniently police-box sized hedge’. “I’m dreadfully sorry to barge in on you like this when you’re on your way out —“ Barbara did have a coat, normal houses being better equipped to supply such things than capricious timeship wardrobe rooms, “and I’m not selling something or trying to convert you to anything or asking you to vote for anyone, but if I don’t collect some piece of bric-a-brac from you the world is going to end. Apparently.”
Which was the precise moment, she thought, when any reasonable person would slam the door and call the police.
“Oh,” Barbara said, putting down her shopping bag. “You must be a friend of the Doctor’s. Come inside before you freeze.”
