Story: Together, On This Same Earth
Author: Biichan ([livejournal.com profile] biichan)
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3891
Author's Summary: Once you've started traveling in time and space, things are never quite the same when you stop. Luckily, Victoria's new friend Martha understands this.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield/Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Barbara Wright, Polly Wright
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story, set during Ten and Martha's 1969 sojourn in "Blink," is a powerful look at how travelling with the Doctor changes people's lives. I love stories about the afterlives of companions, and Victoria is an especially good subject for one, since she's chosen to stay in a time not her own. Biichan writes Victoria extremely well, keeping her of her time while showing her growth as she explores the new possibilities of the twentieth century.

Victoria/Martha is not a pairing I would ever have expected to work, but it absolutely does. Biichan develops the emotional connection between them slowly and plausibly. (By the way, although adult-rated, the story's one sex scene is not at all graphic. You should be able to enjoy this story even if explicit f/f slash isn't your thing.)

Another delightful aspect of the story is its reunion of several companions from the First and Second Doctor's eras. They reminisce, naturally, and it's all great fun for the reader. "Together, On This Same Earth" has its sober side, however. 1969 isn't paradise, and neither, as Victoria and Martha both know, is the future. One of the things I really like about this story is its attentiveness to to the darker side of Doctor Who, and especially the emotional toll that all those monsters and near-apocalypses might take on a companion. Which isn't to say it's depressing--the story really captures the enthusiasm for life which has always been an important part of Doctor Who.

Story: Mistress of the Jolly Dark
Author: Kalima
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary: In 19th century London, a down-on-her-luck prostitute meets a strange little man with a red-handled umbrella.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/OFC
Warnings: Graphic Sex, Horror

Recced because: I don't gravitate toward darkfic--as you've probably long since figured out--but this little parable of why Time Lord/human sexual relationships are a really, really, really, really, really bad idea fascinated me with its depictions of the Seventh Doctor's despair and inner demons (this Doctor is definitely the Oncoming Storm of the NAs), an original character skillfully fleshed out in a very few paragraphs and the atmosphere of dread suffusing their encounter right from the start. Please be forewarned that this is indeed a horror story featuring a very alien Doctor, and while he's sorry, so sorry for what he's inadvertently done, he still can't put things right in the end.

(Making up for yesterday's missed rec)

Coming to you live from the Time Vortex, it's TARDIS Week! All week long, I'll be reccing fics wherein our favorite blue Police Box takes a starring (or at least active) role.

Hang on. It's going to be a bumpy ride -- because that's the way the TARDIS rolls!

Story: Divinity
Author: Red Light Special
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2792
Author's Summary: The key fits, but the lock doesn't turn, and someone really wants the door to open.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Nine/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic is parts disturbing, parts erotic beyond imagining. The prose is haunting in a way that hints at how very alien the two main characters are. As a Rose shipper, I can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for her in this fic, but there's still something about it that rings very right with me (y'know... assuming that the Doctor has a sexuality at all).

Story: Interlude and Storm
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Adult-ish
Word Count: 11,236
Author's Summary: After the Time War and the Doctor’s subsequent regeneration, the Tardis decides to take advantage of their first landing (and a new use of her energy) to deal with a few concerns of her own.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic explores a very long-term relationship that transcends friendship, romance or companionship. It has a slow build, a satisfying climax, and a poignant ending. There are some humorous moments, some awkward moments, and some intensely beautiful moments. The entire thing resounds with the feeling that these two have been together for a very long time, and know each other more intimately than the limitations of mortal flesh. I strongly recommend this for those of you who were hoping that Kylie's Astrid was something more than a human-shaped waitress.

My final two recs are explicitly ship-fics, but chosen because they stand out among a multitude of ship-fics in the modern Who era. Relationships, romance, even sex, but not as you’d expect, and again stories to make the reader think. If you’re interested in seeing Doctor/companion stories done well, try these last two recs of mine.

Story: At Thirty Paces
Author: Rallalon

Rated: Adult

Author’s summary: He's not coming. Not tonight.

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Estelle Cole. Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose/Jack; Tenth Doctor/Rose; Rose/Jack; Tenth Doctor/Jack, Jack/Estelle Cole, Jack/Ianto.

Warnings: Adult, Explicit Sex

Recced because: Here, finally, is an explanation for Jack’s ‘wrongness’ that I can accept and completely get behind, and an AU in which the Doctor doesn’t completely abandon him. It’s not an easy story to read, because it’s a painful, tragic love story in which no-one gets a happy ending. Yet it’s haunting, sticking in my mind for a long time after I read it. The Doctor is actually ‘allergic’ to Jack: if he comes any closer to Jack than a distance of thirty feet, he’s in excruciating pain. This is the story, in part, of how the three of them deal with that over the century-plus of Jack’s living the slow path (they space out Rose’s life, ‘rationing’ her so that Jack doesn’t lose her too soon), and it’s also how Jack copes with the slow path, and with his own doomed relationships while he waits. Waits for the Doctor, and for Rose, who almost never come. Tissue-warning, I think.

Story: Voices Airy?
Author: lostwolf
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: Sequel to Fall From The Wire and part of the Journeys in the in-between series, this follows on directly from The Satan Pit. The Beast has foretold Rose's death and neither Rose nor the Doctor are dealing with it terribly well...
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor/Rose
Warnings: explicit sex and violence

Recced because:
This fic is very dark; exploring a side of the Tenth Doctor that we know is there, but hasn't really been seen on screen yet, The Family of Blood was the closest we've really seen to what happens here.. I was rather astounded by this particular fic, because it is also very emotive and plays nicely with the prophecy of the Beast. Lostwolf has really taken these two characters and built them into something even stronger behind the episodes.

I should also mention that the rest of this series, Journeys in the In-Between, is worth a read as well, as each of the stories are very different, but of equally good calibre. I stumbled across these stories while hunting down something good to read, and I came across the first fic written in this series - Perchance to Die (it's actually the second story) - and from there I was hooked.

Anyway, back to Voices Airy, this one is certainly worth the read and can work as a stand alone rather well. But be warned, there is violence and very explicit sex.

Story: Blue Touch Paper
Author: kiwimouse
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: Ace and the Doctor have a go together.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Ace
Warnings: explicit sex

Recced because: It's terribly wrong of me, I admit it. The Seventh Doctor's era was the height of asexuality and it's common fandom wisdom that he and Ace are supposed to have a father/daughter relationship. But then Gallifreyans are a bit odd about family relations (witness Susan and the Fifth Doctor) and it's not like they're genetically related.

I admit it. I ship it, if only just a little bit. And even if you don't particularly ship it, I'd still recommend this story because it's sweet and poignant and funny. It's lovely to find an explicit fic that isn't afraid to be funny.

Story: The Man Who Would Be Nyder
Author: mary_pseud
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: The story of Security Commander Nyder's youth, training, suffering and achievements. A boy born on Skaro during the Thousand Years War grows up to be Davros' feared second in command.
Characters/Pairings: Nyder, Davros, lots of Kaled OCs
Warnings: graphic violence, rape, character death

Recced because: This is a difficult fic. I won't lie to you. Reading it made my stomach hurt and more than once I thought of turning back, but I stayed with it because it's very good, although it's utterly heartbreaking. Mary_pseud tells the story of Nyder, Davros' lieutenant. It's coming of age story and a brutal one. But then, Skaro is a brutal place and Mary_pseud fleshes her setting out in admirable detail. It's a place that you really can believe has been at war longer than anyone remembers.

The Man Who Would Be Nyder is part of Mary_pseud's Damnatio Memoriae alternate universe, but it functions quite well as a standalone story. All of the stories in Damnatio Memoriae are very well done and I'd recommend the series as a whole, although you'd want to have a good deal of free time in which to read it, as it's quite long. (The Man Who Would Be Nyder is itself about twenty-five thousand words long.)

If you have trouble reading about painful subjects, please turn away now. If, however, you enjoy a good tragedy from time to time, this story is definitely the one for you.

Story: Full Circle
Author: Viridian5
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: Turlough and the Doctor meet for the first time. Then Turlough and the Doctor meet for the first time....
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Turlough, Fifth Doctor/Turlough
Warnings: explicit sex

Recced because: It's really, really hot.

No, seriously. It came to my attention that I'd only recced gen or mostly gen stuff so far this week and I figured I ought to have at least one fic that treats the Doctor in a sexual fashion, lest I be mistaken for a dirty asexualist. And what better Doctor to treat in a sexual fashion than Old Teeth And Curls himself? (Hey, I find him sexy.)

In Viridian5's story, the Doctor and Sarah Jane are on holiday in late twentieth century New York when the Doctor runs into a rather familiar looking young man. With a little mental prodding, he recognizes the young man in question as one of his future self's companions (which his past selves met briefly in The Five Doctors) and promptly decides to, ah, borrow from his future self. Just for a little while.

The story's told in first person from the Doctor's point of view and Viridian5 does a decent job of differentiating the voices of the different Doctors. It was very easy to picture Tom Baker reading the Fourth Doctor's part of the fic or Peter Davison reading the Fifth Doctor's. It's not perfect--it could have probably used a little Brit-picking--but it's really very good. (Also, it's one of the older fics on the Teaspoon, dating back five years or more.)

Story: "Bacchus, Ever Fair and Young"
Author: aces
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: "Nothing like a little chemical high to take your mind off being stuck on a damned backwater for crimes you didn’t (really) commit."
Characters/Pairings: Turlough/Fifth Doctor, Turlough/Tenth Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: Turlough might be exiled on Earth, stuck in the 1980s at uni, but there's good drugs and sex, and he's cool with that. An AU Turlough who didn't end up at Brendan, this one likes them dark, or blond, and always pretty. Ten's willing enough, Five less so, but Turlough manages to get his way, in loud clubs and public spaces. The ending nicely wraps things up, more neatly than you could have imagined from the set-up, and throughout the writing of Turlough's character – in this incarnation – is terrific. It's hot and twisty and I'm really, really cool with that.

Series: Bless
Author: commodoresexual
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: Every couple has a love story. Some of those are just more messed up than others.
Characters: Other Character(s), The Master (Simm) (Simm!Master/Lucy)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I absolutely adore commodoresexual's take on the Master/Lucy love story. These characters are so dark, so broken, and so terrifyingly right for each other that it's simply fantastic. There are more stories in this series than just the two that are posted on Teaspoon, and I really wish commodoresexual'd post the rest on Teaspoon for everyone to enjoy. But even in this smaller snippet, this series has definitely become part of my personal canon regarding the Master/Lucy relationship. There are some terrifying moments, dark aspects, angst (I do love me some angst), but overall, you can really see how and why the Master fell for Lucy and vice versa. It's an ode to darkness, and I do love it.

Story: OTP Forever
Author: bytheseaside
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary: Revenge is sweet femslash.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones, Martha Jones/Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because you can't beat good crack!fic, that's why. Also, I am of the opinion that this fandom is in desperate need of more femslash; especially with this pairing. The author manages to highlight the fact that the Doctor continues to talk about Rose after she's gone, despite being written before Series 3 aired. All in all; a very funny story. Plus, any fic that features Doctor/TARDIS can't be bad.

Author's Summary: The Doctor and the Master in a psychological power play, with smut.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Warnings: Slash, BDSM, Graphic Sex
Recced because: This was one of the first Ten/Master fics that I read and I absolutely fell in love with it. It's a pretty accurate take on their extremely complicated relationship.

With sex.
