Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul, and I'm back for my second round of recs here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax after a long hiatus. I've got my recs all ready to go for this round, so let's get started, shall we?

Story: Master's Thesis
Author: helluin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42,530
Author's Summary: When Nyssa tries to return home with the cure to a deadly plague, the TARDIS overshoots and slips back into her past, the Doctor's future. Worse, the Master is already there, taking a sinister interest in her family. Hemmed in by potential time paradoxes, there's only one person to whom Nyssa can turn for help: her best friend Tegan.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This fic is based on the Big Finish arc where an older Nyssa joins Five, Tegan and Turlough for a spell in the TARDIS, but this can be read without any knowledge of the Big Finish audios. What I love about this fic is that it feels like a Big Finish audio or even an old serial with Five in it. There's action, witty quips and a paradox that needs to be fixed or else. I highly recommend this for Classic Who fans.

I know, I know - late again! I should have made this post last night. Instead, I fell on my face rather early. I'm hoping with all the New Who excitement that you still don't miss this next rec though! I figured (since I started off with light and sweet), that it would only be fitting to end with 'Funny' - which is where this next rec comes in...

Story: Light Years
Author: idon'tlikegravy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5048
Author's Summary: Crossover with Red Dwarf. The TARDIS throws a wobbly, sending the Doctor 3million light years from Earth and completely ruining Lister's poker night.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Crossover

Recced because: There are a lot of good crossovers out there - a lot of them serious, a lot of them dazzling and brilliant and they seem to make perfect, perfect sense. This is brilliant, not serious at all and the only thing dazzling is the lack of actual milk for your tea (no, you don't want to know, don't ask).

I love Red Dwarf. I've been watching since I was a teen - so not quite as long as I have been watching Doctor Who - but my love for it is almost as intense. This show is ridiculous and yet has scientific accuracy at a lot of points squashed between the 'Bzuh?!' and 'OMG, REALLY?!' - so there is something there for the space nerds to totally get into. Still, there is a lot of 'Bzuh?!' and 'OMG, REALLY?!' (s'what makes Red Dwarf, Red Dwarf) so of course the Doctor should totally crash into their universe and wreak havoc as he always does. Not that it changes much for the Boys from the Dwarf. Tis just another day (in many ways) for them. Though to be fair, the Doctor is more of a Wednesday type of trouble than a Monday trouble - so they don't mind it overly much.

This fiction is utterly hilarious from start to finish. And yet, it has serious moments that make you stop and pause and compare the two universes and how they very much mesh (even as they shouldn't). The love for the characters shines through the author's work. There is a gripping, believable storyline and the characterization is just simply gorgeous and completely spot on. This is another fiction I could go on about forever, but then you'd never get the pleasure of reading it as you would still be here, reading about my love of it. *Laughs* So! Since I'm always sure I'm not the slightest bit convincing, I am leaving a tidbit below - just to get you jumpstarted on this awesomeness...

*Laughs* Hope you enjoy this fiction as much as I have - please do let the author know what you think, as it just might convince them to make more!

This will be my last recommendation. You will have a new reccer in a few days - and I know they will bring us more epic brilliance for us all to love. I've had an awesome time and I can only hope you've enjoyed the fictions that I have pimped during my two weeks here. Thank you for indulging me and giving love to the authors of these fictions.

Premiere of New Who (and the intro of the Twelfth), tonight!! I know we'll all be wrapped up in that for the next several days at least. May you love it! And long live Doctor Who!

Until Next Time~

Story: Double Vision
Author: IrishVampire13
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1905
Author's Summary: Now that the Doctor actually thought about it, something felt wrong. There was a peculiarity drifting through the air around him that made his hair stand on end.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Swearing, Horror

Recced because: Okay, anyone who knows me, knows I have an addiction to Bad Guys. It's terrible (and wonderful) and a fantastic Bad Guy is enough to have me running and drooling over all a manner of fiction. The Master...the Master has owned my heart since I was a wee one. I have enjoyed his sarcasm, cruelty, cat-and-mouse shenanigans and his tendency to play the long game just for giggles. He has always fascinated me - and he will always be a favorite villian, no matter what face he wears.

That being said, I've always been one for Irony and how said Irony can be a @#$%!. I loved Ainley. I loved Roberts (hey, stop that - I saw the eye-rolls!). I have even 'made up' a few Masters in my time just for fun. Cumberbatch!Master and Smith!Master come immediately to mind here. I have written a few fictions myself with Smith!Master facing off (or getting ready to do so) against the Eleventh. Just because Irony and its @#$%!iness.

Then came this fiction. I know this author well and she knows my tastes (likely a little TOO well). She took an idea I fiddled with a year or more ago (before giving up the ghost on it) and created a fiction that just...blew my mind! It made so much sense, it was beautifully written and frankly, I rode her tail until she finally started posting to Teaspoon. The reasons are utterly selfish - being able to rec her work being the main one. *Grins* And so here I am, happy to recommend one of her latest fictions and one that she says is based off my own scribblings, but utterly out-does said scribblings without hardly any effort on her part at all. She lines out the details exquisitely, resolves a few problems that could be raised with just a few sentences and creates a story that will chill you and make you wonder 'what if?!' Whole worlds could come undone with just this concept alone - and the way it ends will make you scream, cheer and drive yourself crazy trying to suss out the possibilites of it all. But in case you don't trust my word by now, I have brought a modest example just to convince you...

Small taste here... )

Oh. So. Good. Whoo-hoo!! Please be sure to tell her how much you enjoyed her tale, I know she'd appreciate it!

Story: A Problem of Background
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5117
Author's Summary: The Doctor needs Martha's advice about a new companion.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Original Companion, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Non-Con, Character Study, Drama, General

Recced because: Well, part of the rec is 'Lyricwritesprose'. I mean, anyone who has read her work will understand what I'm talking about. She is one of the most recced writers here (top ten, actually) - and for a good reason. She consistently (and absolutely) blows everyone away with her stellar work. She can write every Doctor, every Era flawlessly and with a style that puts you right there in the thick of it. A gorgeous writer and well worth reccing every time. But that's not the only reason I'm reccing at this point.

This is literally a 'history' fiction (in a manner of speaking). The Doctor not only goes back to see a Companion we have not seen since Ten's Era, but he brings someone only she can help. There are some shocking elements to this fiction - but then, there should be. With the turmoil going on in today's world - racial tension, profiling and horror being committed against people for the very fact their skin color isn't white - this fiction...fits. It tells us that our history (for all that it has changed), has only changed slightly. It is a good historical fiction. It is a fiction that is well worth the read for the characters, the remembrance of not-so-good days in the past. And how one little girl could be rescued (and just may do the same for others), by the man with a time machine and good intentions - even as he may not be equipped to handle everything the universe can throw at him. That's why he has friends. That's why he needs people to keep him steady and remind him that sometimes, he isn't the only one saving people. Though really, the bravest and best character here is the one the author created that this fiction is centered around. You will love her, feel for her, be proud of her. In the world she grew up in, life was sketchy and difficult and brutal - but she was a rock against it. There are a lot of reasons to recommend this fiction. I have barely scraped the surface (and likely, I have done so poorly) - but I could be here all day with all the reasons this fiction is a must-read and one that will change how you see the world and all of our places within it. But I will not do that. I will let you discover this for yourself. But as always, I will give you a small taste to get you going with this tale...

Small taste below the cut )

Ahhh, a wonderful, terrible, beautiful and perfect fiction. Please do tell her what you think. And let her know that her work is missed...

Recced because: Recced because of Happy Ending. I know, I know...last thing you expect to see from me, but this was so, so sweet. And it has definitely become my head!canon. I'm not a River/Eleven shipper, but I do love how well they mesh together. And after all their trials and hardships and back-to-front relationship woes, they deserve a happy life.

I find it ironic (in a funny way) that this follows so closely on the heels of my last rec...but then - you'll see why. This is definitely a must read (especially for all those who adore River/Eleven)! This is the perfect ending. This is how it should be. Story: Still Waters

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 833
Author's Summary: In which River exists, a spirit in a web, dressed in white and timeless.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Drama, Introspection, Romance

Recced because: Well. River for one. River could be the sole reason for this rec alone. But it isn't just River. It is River lost within the Machine. It is how she is painted, so vivid, so alive and so very, very River within this fiction. 'Inkfire' consistently blows me away with the quality of her work. So very much so, it is difficult to chose just which fiction of hers to recommend. I'm afraid my reviews to her work are never very stellar, as she generally leaves me too flabbergasted and stunned and in awe to come up with actual words to describe the feelings she invokes within me.

This is another one of those fictions. It left me stunned. If left me sad and elated and sighing with the overall perfection within each and every word, sentence, paragraph. She puts you there with River. She shows us River's strength, her calm, her longing for all that she knew, even as she does what she does best - takes what is handed to her and makes do. She deals with the cards she has drawn as best as she knows how. And with River, her best is nothing but her all.

This fiction is River Song. Down to a tee. I am in awe and I could not let this week go by without reccing this story by this (oh-so) phenomenal author. But in case this rec is not enough to convince, I have a taste of this beauty below the cut...

Story: The Storyteller
Author: Michael1812
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 98,625
Author's Summary: 1917 France. A military hospital. Amy is in dire need of comfort after an accident so the Doctor tells her a story. Twice upon a time... in Paris with pirates, a former Time-Agent, a stolen tower, an empire of death...and a man without a name.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th), Unspecified Companion
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Action/Adventure, Character Study, Drama, General, Horror, Humor, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery

Recced because: I've been wanting to rec this fiction for a long while now. He wanted to do some clean-ups and edits, so I held back until now, but I am unable to hold back any longer. This fiction is a long one, but is is a massively awesome one - and well worth the time it takes to read.

That being said, this literally has it all! Romance, mystery, war, greed, adventure, horror - all in one fiction. We get to see old friends, meet new enemies and be taken for a ride that you will never forget. The imagery is stunning, the adventure compelling and the twist at the end is perfectly gorgeous!! This is definitely a fiction everyone should read! As usual, I am at a total loss for words to describe the utter epicness of this fiction - but if I am at a loss, I'm sure when you read you will be able to forgive such a failure on my part, as this is truly one of those stories that leaves us all with too many words and yet not enough. That being said, I know that sometimes a taste to whet one's appetite is generally required - so the taste (as always) is proffered below...

Modest example here. )

See what I mean?! Just...epic!! Be sure to read (and take your time if you have to, sometimes fiction is best enjoyed that way) and let this author know how much they rock!!

Author's Summary: Oh, Amelia Pond, the things you don't know.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Character Study, General, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection

Recced because: First of all, recced because this is amazing. The author always produces sheer quality and this is no exception. Of course (in my humble opinion) every author I recommend (and their glorious fictions) are just brilliant hands down. This fiction though...it is about the sudden remembrance of loss and the actual physical sensations of grief. It is about a man who doesn't think he is lonely, but suddenly remembers how he very much is, even as he tries to hide that from a friend who helps to keep that self-same loneliness and sorrow at bay.

It is about a remarkable companion, who can understand such loss in their own way, even as their own loss is different in so many ways. It is how grief can be silent and still be shared; how one doesn't have to hide their hurts.

It is about the continuance of all things, even if it is not as we used to know them.

I really have no other words that can truly do justice to this fiction. To see all these lovely, terrible, haunting, wonderful, relieving things, one must read this tale. Tis as simple as that, even if it isn't simple at all. I say this, but I do realize that occasionally, one must need a little push to plunge in - and as always, I have done my best to oblige below...

Small sample below the Cut )

See? Beautiful. Now...go - read! - and tell this writer how they have touched you, how they have made you feel - because in the end, isn't that the point of it all?

Word Count: 1899
Author's Summary: AU where Rita survived and came along after The God Complex.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Alternate Universe

Recced because: First of all: Rita. That's quite enough to be going on with for most people. *Smiles*

But this is Rita with bonus awesome.

In this AU fiction, The Doctor did something he said he would never do again - and saved her life as he did so. Only problem is, his is still ending. Rita is vastly intelligent. Highly intuitive...and deeply compassionate. She is right and she is wrong and she cannot (will not) accept his explanations for going to his fate. Maybe (in this lifetime) she was the push he needed to reach for faith, for something beyond, for an idea of how to save himself and the life he'd built for all these centuries. Maybe (in the original universe) it was merely the memory of her. I know what I prefer though. Reading this, I think Rita would have saved him from himself. And maybe helped him save her as well. And that is more than enough reason to read this fiction. Actually, just the idea of it makes the reading of this fiction an imperative. But in case 'Rita' and 'deep, beautiful conversation with wonderful results for two people who are lost' isn't enough - I do have my modest example under the cut below...

Just a taste to get you started... )

I certainly hope you enjoy this fiction. Do stop and tell her how awesome this was. How it touched your heart and made you think...and how real and right it truly felt.

Story: through this disappearing land
Author: Lyaka
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 13711
Author's Summary: The man he’d been once would have laid down next to Cass and died in defiance of war. The man who had drunk from the cup acknowledged that war was a grim necessity. The man he’d become? The Warrior didn’t yet understand what he would or wouldn’t do, but he had a feeling he was about to find out. The War Doctor is summoned back to Gallifrey, as the pace of the Time War accelerates towards destruction.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Daleks, The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi), The Time Lords,
Warnings: Character Study, Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: There always needs to be more about Gallifrey during the Time War. I have read many, many fics about the Time War. I have written a few myself. There is still so much mystery to be delved into. So much richness to be explored.

This fiction does that. There are no words to describe how this fiction blew me away. I was asked to beta and I have to say...I read this and practically cried because of the sheer perfection. It was my honor to beta this glorious work: there were a few surprises twists, a few characters we know well seen from a new light, new depths to the War Doctor and a fresh, yet even more sinister feel to the hierachy of Gallifrey. The political machinations alone were mind-boggling and complex, yet laid out in a way that makes sense of it all. The skewed, tilted view of the Time Lords and how they descended into madness with this War is laid out step by step and it is frightening how easy that slide seems to be from the depiction. An intelligent, secure (rather stagnant) people become vicious, manipulative and blood-thirsty very quickly. They always had that potential, but this fiction showed it soaring to new heights. Couple the fear that is displayed here with a nice dose of ruthlessness (and horror) embroil the Universe's Champion...and you get this fiction. Glorious. I am reccing this because GLORIOUS. A definite must-read for all.

Story: A Fleeting Passion for Facial Hair

This is a Very Serious observation about the Master and his Beardiness (and sometimes lack thereof) throughout his own regenerations. His pursuit of the Perfect Facial 'Do - and the Doctor's mixed (and heartfelt) reactions throughout. Even if you have never seen Classic Who , I'm sure this will still be a laugh. I know at the very least, you might've seen pictures of the Master and his various attempts to decorate his chin with luxurious, artistic (and under-appreciated) styles that can only be admired by the true believers in the masterful pun intended expression of...of hair on one's face. But if you still need convincing -

I might just have a modest sample beneath the cut )

Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble/The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love this story so much. I first read it over a year ago and since then I've gone back to read it all over again two more times. The way Lilac writes is fantastic- incredibly humorous and with just the right amount of description, thought, and dialogue to make for a perfect read. This fic does veer into more explicit areas later on, so be aware. Personally, this fic takes the cake for best episode with a different companion.
Ten and Donna are so very in character, well, as much as Ten can be when he's John Smith. I can't even try to describe the amazing that is this fic. Just go read it for yourselves and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Recced because: This is a very fun, enjoyable fic that has pretty much every nuWho companion out there, as well as three different Doctors. Incredibly well written, with a strong, even representation of opposing characters, and some fantastic plot twists. Hi!

I'm Cicci (ciccigreen on Teaspoon) and I'm your reccer this week! This is my third time reccing, and I've enjoyed it immensely the other two times. I alternate between being a Donna/Doctor and Ten/Rose-shipper, I love a well-written sex scene and I'm passionately interested in feminism and gender issues. I also read way too much hurt/comfort for my own good.

Without further ado, let's start the week off with some really good sex.

Story: Burn
Author: sinecure

Word Count: 1108
Author's Summary: Rose enjoys the view.
Character/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced Because:

Sinecure does the seemingly impossible in this little gem of a fic: writing PWP that's technically just sex but no plot, but really so much more. We don't know anything about the Doctor's and Rose's relationship in this fic, we don't know where in their time lines we are, and in fact, we don't even know what led them to have sex here in the first place.

But we don't need to.

Sinecure shows perfectly how to build an entire story that's just implied, but without leaving the reader unsatisfied. We don't need to know the details because we understand anyway.

Okay, there are other reasons. For example, this fic is also hilarious, hot, and very well written. Biichan has nailed Four and Romana's condescending City of Death patter. Poor Duggan is obviously in way over his head, but he's not adverse to confusing circumstances. In fact, he seems rather to be enjoying them...

Story: Wary
Author: Maria Law
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3536
Author's Summary: On a cold night in November, Grace Holloway meets the one person she never thought to meet again. The Doctor is lonely and looking to make a connection. Can the two of them sort things out?
Character/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Grace Holloway
Warnings: None
Recced Because:

Much has been written under the "Nine visits an old friend after the Time War" theme. It's one of those well-loved tropes that can fuel a thousand fics (and more) without getting old. Of those thousands of fics, however, this is the only one I know of that features Nine getting brained with a zucchini.

There's also great characterization, zesty dialogue, and lush descriptions.Wary manages to strike a balance between well-handled Time War angst and moments of laugh-out-loud funny, without feeling disjointed. The result is a great fic that takes angst and makes it bright without making it trivial. I hope it brightens your day too.

Author's Summary: The Doctor makes battle with NHS paperwork.
Character/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced Because:

Sometimes you need a smile and this fic is good at supplying one. Its a silly bit of paperwork that's thrust at Ten moments before the beginning of Smith & Jones, and the Doctor fills it out... creatively, though also with surprising honesty.

Story: I see, I see (And It Sees Into Me)
Author: PhoenixDragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4814
Author's Summary: It was unusual to have a High Inquisitor from Senior Command come for an inspection in the middle of wartime to begin with. It was even more unusual for that same HI to arrive with not one, but two advisors; those advisors carrying their own ranks and insignia from the upper echelons of Command. Commendante Rychtell didn’t know whether to be flattered or frightened, but he figured a good dose of both wouldn’t hurt.
Character/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswald, Amy Pond, Others
Warnings: Graphic Horror

Recced Because:

Where to begin? There are several things going on in this fic which I love, but since this needs to be a concise rec and not an essay here are the main three:

1. The trippy, confusing, cold opening, which drop kicks you straight into this wonderfully complex tangle of a story. I say confusing, but it's confusing in that good, brilliant way where it's supposed to be a bit baffling until you hit about mid-way through and then, suddenly, everything snaps into place with a chilling logic that makes you want to re-read everything that's gone before.

2. Commendante Rychtell. As villains go, he's despicable in the worst ways possible. Except... he's also so completely human. I enjoyed the complex world-building standing behind this character, but even more so, I enjoyed how he was dealt with at the end and what this says about Eleven and his own demons, and the choices we all make and live with.

3. Eleven and all of his companions, past and present. They're just gorgeous together. Always.

Story: A Portrait of Goodbye
Author: Styrofoam monster
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 376
Author's Summary: Strange how one can say so much without uttering a word. The Doctor and Martha converse.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: Ever since the Third Doctor greeted Liz Shaw in the eyebrow-waggling language of Delphon, we've known that the Doctor can converse in non-verbal tongues. So when Martha's body language inadvertantly reveals her feelings, the Doctor is compelled to reply in the same manner, even if his companion can't understand what he's saying – which is really for the best from the Tenth Doctor's perspective, as it always was easier anyway for him to hide his most personal thoughts rather than express them outright. This is a short story (too short for an excerpt), but it packs quite an emotional punch for something that doesn't even hit 400 words.

Story: Still Life
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 934
Author's Summary: "The most tranquil place in the universe, and you're lamenting a lack of ungulates."
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy/Rory, the TARDIS
Warnings: none

Recced because: Okay, this story was written for a prompt I left in last year's Eleventyfest fic exchange, but I'd rec it anyway, because it's as soothing and tranquil as the Eye of Orion itself. Besides, sometimes (usually Mondays), you need something soothing and tranquil. It's a deceptively simple slice-of-life piece that serves as a lovely coda for "The Doctor's Wife," in which everyone, Time Lord, companions, and TARDIS, gets a much-needed moment of peace after a difficult ordeal.

Story: The Pandora Project
Author: Calapine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 53,658
Author's Summary: At the end of series three, the Doctor and the Master end up travelling together and totally manage not to destroy each other or the universe. More or less. Meanwhile, Martha gets a job offer from UNIT, Jack fails to realise his team are a bit useless, and there's a giant squid for no good reason whatsoever.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones

Recced because: This story has been on my to-be-recced list practically since [livejournal.com profile] calapine first posted it to LiveJournal, but I haven't gotten around to reccing it until now because I wanted to re-read it first, and could never quite find the time to sit and read a 53,000-word fic. But I thought I'd spend a few minutes at least skimming it this weekend ... except that "skimming" suddenly turned into "do nothing else until you finish reading this amazing fic in its entirety."

Seven years after Series 3, fandom has long since turned "the Master survived the events on the Valiant and travels with the Doctor instead" into a well-worn trope, but rarely is it handled as wittily, in-character, and compellingly as it is here. There are cameos from Classic Who characters, endless snark between the Tenth Doctor and the Master, and yes, a giant squid -- a vampire squid, to be exact, because if you're going to have a giant squid in a Doctor Who story, it might as well be a vampire, too. And there is also, of course, a fine plot holding all of this together, one that seamlessly blends the classic series with the new one, but saying more would spoil it. If you didn't have weekend fic-reading plans before, I hope you do now.

After July 14, we're out of reccers. If you've been reading this comm for a while but have never stepped forward to rec, please consider it – everyone, new and old reccers alike, is welcome to rec. All you need to do select 4-10 stories that haven't been recced before and that meet the comm's fairly basic rules (well-written/formatted, no bashfic, etc.). Reccing periods last two weeks; complete rules and sign-up instructions in this post.

Story: Last Stop, White City
Author: Pendragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2,003
Author's Summary: Fifty years since returning home, Ian and Barbara recreate their first ever date.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian

Recced because: I've been catching up on Classic Who episodes I haven't watched before, which included most of Ian and Barbara's run. Their jubilant tour of London at the end of "The Chase" is one of the shippiest scenes I've ever seen, and I think it's completely fair for fic authors to treat that as the couple's first date, as Pendragon does here. Fifty years after Ian and Barbara returned to Earth in a Dalek ship, they re-visit all the places they celebrated that day: Trafalgar Square, the Thames Embankment, and even a city bus. It's a joyful, romantic story that left me as giddy as Ian and Barbara were, and hopefully will do the same for you.

Story: Taking Care
Author: MacBeth
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1324
Author's Summary: In the end, there will be time to enjoy the classics -- and the old favourites. Written after "The Day of the Doctor".
Characters/Pairings: The Caretaker, The TARDIS
Warnings: Spoilers for Day of the Doctor.

Recced because: I couldn’t think of a better way to end this reccing stint than by sharing this wonderful post-50th anniversary fic with everyone. It’s a beautifully done piece in which the Caretaker delights in his chosen retirement. The descriptions, the suggestions of alien worlds, the small references, the way that it picks up on strands of the anniversary episode – it’s something special.

Story: 165 Eaton Place
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All ages/PG
Word Count: 4431
Author's Summary: Gerald and Harriet of the Torchwood Institute run an errand one rainy London night, scarcely realising the danger they are walking into. Crossover with Upstairs Downstairs.
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Derbyshire, Gerald Carter
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a galloping good read, that’s why. If you don’t know the crossover fandom (Upstairs Downstairs – the 1970s one, that is) or Gerald and Harriet (who are characters from Edwardian Torchwood), fear not – neither do I and I still loved it. It makes use of a bit of cross-casting (one of the UD characters was played by one Anthony Ainley) and dives into adventure, fun and some romance between our old-fashioned heroes. What’s not to enjoy?

Story: The Fake Fiancé
Author: infiniteviking
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3620
Author's Summary: Trapped on Verescis, the Doctor and Peri are dragooned into a diabolical wedding ritual -- but the native who helps them escape is more than he seems.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Peri Brown
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a clever, well-written fic; the interactions between the Doctor and Peri are perfectly judged, from the banter at the start, to the more compassionate exchanges as the situation becomes more serious, and it’s an interesting look at an alien world with a smart twist in the tail.

Story: Satisfaction Guaranteed
Author: Pitry
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 650
Author's Summary: Some people would complain about anything.
Characters/Pairings: None.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: You’ve got to wonder what it would be like living in the Doctor Who universe where every Christmas seems to be interrupted by alien invasion – and it’s not as if the rest of the year is much better (and even worse if you live in Cardiff). Well, this fic is a fun parodic piece dealing with that idea and should be guaranteed to put a grin on your face.

Story: Clarification
Author: Prochytes
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2538
Author's Summary: It is a truth universally acknowledged that Captain Jack Harkness is hard to forget. So why does one conquest never remember his name?
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Clara Oswin Oswald, Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams, Eleventh Doctor (Clara/Jack)
Warnings: Swearing.

Recced because: It’s sharply written, contains an unexpected (but entirely logical) pairing, and it's very funny. Clara Oswald and Jack Harkness are bound to meet, in this case, repeatedly. What’s bothering Jack is why Clara can never remember who he is each time it happens again. I can’t decide what’s the funniest part – Gwen’s suggestion that it's because the sex isn’t as great for Clara as it is for Jack, or the effect of the Doctor's arrival on Torchwood’s tendency to bad language but it's a thoroughly entertaining read from start to finish.

Story: a red light or a star
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 476
Author's Summary: What comes, goes. What goes, comes. Everything in its time.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s such a wonderful and unusual ficlet, exploring the TARDIS’s origins from her point of view. It’s strange and poetic and not-quite-linear and it’s another brilliant example of how much can be achieved in relatively few words.

Story: Clean Up on Aisle Three
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2467
Author's Summary: A grocery-store clerk's ordinary life takes an extraordinary turn.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Original Characters
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a thoroughly entertaining fic of the type that somehow sums up the nature of the entire show, really – there’s an alien boar and a whole thing with broccoli and a bucket of soapy water, and the Doctor needs help from an ordinary person – with joy and humour and heart. It’s a story that fits the Eighth Doctor perfectly, the original characters are well drawn and there are some lovely fleeting cameos to keep an eye out for, too. What more can you ask for?

Story: Hope and Dust
Author: padawanpooh
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 509
Author's Summary: Nyssa and Tegan in a quiet moment on the Saturnian moon Tethys.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a beautiful, brief vignette that quietly says a lot in a few words, capturing a sense of both science and wonder, of the friendship between Nyssa and Tegan – and a foreshadowing of what will cause them to give up the ability to explore space and time like this.

Story: Lodestar
Author: livii
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1197
Author's Summary: There is power in the ordinary, he thinks, there is power in the old.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings:

Recced because: It’s a wonderful fic that encompasses new and old and the ways in which they’re tied together. It’s so beautifully written – and it makes complete sense that the Ninth Doctor after what he’s just come through, goes back to the beginning to find reaffirmation: to his very first human companions. As the story says There is power in the ordinary, there is power in the old.
