Story: The Quiet Chamber
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kalleah
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,768
Author's Summary: Ten II and Rose in the immediate aftermath of "Journey's End."
Characters/Pairings: Ten (duplicate), Rose, Jackie, Pete
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is one of my favorite post-"Journey's End" stories. It's beautifully written, and perfectly captures the difficult, tentative first day Rose and the duplicate Doctor have together, as well as the uncertainty of their new relationship. The duplicate Doctor may love her as much as the original, but Rose still has confusion, anger, and resentment to sort through, much as she's drawn to this other man. One thing I adore about [livejournal.com profile] kalleah's writing is that her Ten and Rose dialogue always feels real and in-character, with no long, flowery declarations of love; the final conversation on the airplane is just the sort of air-clearing we're never going to get onscreen, and the Doctor's last line is gorgeous.

Story: Seconds Ticking

Author's Summary: Of course they had a back-up plan. No one said that it was sensible.
Characters/Pairings: Leela, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, K-9, Romana II, Braxiatel, Narvin, Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, Pete Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love pocket-watch stories and I love Big Finish and this story manages to combine the two fantastically. Awesome, awesome theory and it's incredible how many good lines are packed in to so few words. I really sort of wish this were canon. Everyone's voice sounds just right, especially Leela's. This one's a must if you like the Big Finish series Gallifrey but is still heaps of fun even if you're not familiar with it, I think.

Minervafan is one of my absolute favourite authors on the ‘spoon, and I think that it is an absolute crime that more of her stories haven’t been recc’d. I could happily spend all seven of my recs on her, but I had to be choosy and reduce it to one.

This is a story about an unlikely pairing which makes perfect sense when you see it written out. Chrissie and Jackie are very similar and their relationship is charming, funny, and vaguely tragic. Minervafan has a talent for taking side characters and fleshing them out into full, real people, and this story is a stellar example of that. Even if you don’t like femslash, I recommend you take a look at Minervafan’s work just for the amazing dialogue and characterization she brings to every story.

Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose, Jackie Tyler
Warnings: None, unless you haven't seen S1 from "The Empty Child" on . . .

Recced because:
As some folks here might know, I'm a great fan of the Doctor/Jack/Rose OT3 (with either Nine or Ten), and this story is ( to me, anyway) a lovely example of that combination.  It's also a great "warm fuzzies" piece, as Jack and the Doctor get to be all protective of Rose, she's grateful . . . and ultimately a very good time is had by all.  ;)

Author's summary: Rose decides that, if it’s the clothes that make the man, she’ll try on a pinstriped suit.
Characters/Pairings: Rose, Mickey, Tenth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Jackie Tyler, Romana II
Warnings: Goes AU from The Girl In The Fireplace.

Recced because: It's not unusual to find AU fic where the alternate universe in question branches off by having the Doctor never find his way back from 18th century France at the end of The Girl In The Fireplace. In fact, there have been at least two other AU fic with the same initial premise already recced in Calufrax (and I should know given that I was the reccer for one of them.) All things considered, it's quite likely that some of you are asking why I would decide to rec another fic with the same beginning. The answer is quite simple: because it's different from both the previous recs and it's good. Well-written and nicely plotted and just plain good. If you only read one rec from me this week, read this one.

Rose and Mickey eventually find their way back to the twentieth century, but the Doctor's not waiting for them when they get there. In fact, he doesn't seem to be anywhere in time and space at all, no matter how hard Rose looks and it's only at the end that she finds the Doctor, only the Doctor isn't what she expected and neither is Rose herself anymore.

Recced because: No second chances? A masterful story, at turns touching, chilling, and humorous. Set between "The Christmas Invasion" and "New Earth," it deals with a newly-regenerated Ten fixing the TARDIS while Earth-bound with the Tyler family. There's a beautiful through-line about change and the development of the new Tenth Doctor.

Author's summary: 'Martha, I'm from another universe, would you like to go for a drink?'
Characters/pairings: Rose/Martha, Jackie Tyler, Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, I'm slightly biased as this was written for me as part of the ficathon on [livejournal.com profile] rose_lives, but meh, it's wondeful and deserves to be recced. Netgirl_y2k manages to get Rose's voice just perfect and there's not a lot of authors who can do that, in my opinion. In fact, there's a wonderful exchange between Jackie and Rose in the beginning which I can visualise so perfectly. It also shows both Rose and Martha saving the universe and being generally rather awesome as well as dealing with the sometimes awkward first stages of a relationship. I am rather in love with this ship, so even if they don't ever meet, I'm happy because I'll have fics like this to read.

Story: Missing
Author: Misato
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: During the year she's missing, Jackie never stops looking for Rose. One night she gets some unexpected help.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Jack Harkness (implied Jackie/Jack)
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,800 words

Recced because: This is just lovely; it's Jackie, eight months after Rose has gone missing, out one rainy night posting flyers across the city, like she does every two weeks. This particular night, she meets someone who's willing to lend a hand and an ear – someone who also misses Rose. This story gives us a Jackie who's very real; she's hurt, she's lonely, she misses her daughter but without ever idealizing Rose, or forgetting their sometimes complicated relationship – and without ever sliding into unnecessary emotionalism. It's lovely to see Jackie treated so well in fic, not dropping any consonants yet with the truest Jackie-voice I've read, and her relationship with Jack is mature and gives them both a few moments of true comfort. This is very good work.

Story: But I Hope
Author:  Meredith or [profile] ameretrifle on LJ
Rating:  All Ages
Word Count:  2,280
Author’s summary: Jackie makes mistakes, and learns. "You deserve the world, Jackie Tyler. And you've raised a daughter who won't settle for anything less."
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings:  None.

Recommended because: This story is a brilliant examination of Jackie Tyler.   She is imperfect.  She falls for the wrong man, settles on the not so wrong but not right either man, doesn’t ask the right questions of Jimmy Stone. Nevertheless, she’s always trying for the best for Rose if not herself. The Tyler spunk is on full display.    Jackie might not have seen the stars in the TARDIS the way her daughter did, but the Doctor sent her on an emotional journey too.  “But I Hope” is moving, insightful, and just a touch funny.

Story: Mother Knows Best
Author: Wish Wielder
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 26,216
Author's summary: When Jackie makes a flippant comment in the presence of an alien artifact, she wakes up to find her entire world flipped around – and not in the good way. There’s only one man – well, alien – she knows who could possibly fix it, and she’s just wished him out of their lives.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I adore stories that delve into the intricacies of 'what if' and toying with time. This one is a true gem. It starts with the premise of Jackie wishing for one thing, one thing only: That Rose Tyler never met the Doctor. From that moment on, it hits the ground running. It's an engrossing, well-written story and it contains one of my absolute favourite characterisations of Jackie Tyler in fan fiction.

Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), Jackie Tyler, off-screen Rose/Doctor
Warnings: Explicit scenes in later chapters.

Recced because: This is a lovely series, with compelling and surprisingly normal leads.  In Heritage, Rose Tyler’s son navigates the alternate world, meets the wonderful Penny, and has the Earth-bound adventure that the Doctor never could.  Heritage is a leisurely and wonderful read, which more than overcomes the concerns usually applicable to stories with original characters. Together with the nuanced original characters, the author writes an affectionate and very funny Jackie.

Story: Ouroborus
Author: Chicketieboo_
Rating: erm... I think it's 'Mature'... or 'Adult?' Yeah... you get the general idea.
Word Count: 121,490
Author's Summary: He had asked her how long she was going to stay with him and she had replied with Forever. And she did, but how does he find her in the sea of visions of all there is, all there was, and all there ever will be? What if the words Bad Wolf came back to haunt both Rose & the Doctor? What if regeneration wasn't the only thing caused by Rose sucking in the Time Vortex? How does she cope, waiting for his return? Why is she calling out for him, bringing him closer and closer, and why can't the past let go? A story about being left behind, & about finding oneself.
Character's/Pairings: Rose/The Doctor (9 and 10), Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Pete Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Sex and violence. Oh and it's really very long. So get comfy.

Recced because: I truly believe that if you are going to read ANY New Who story, it should be this one. I'm not kidding. You NEED to read this. It's an epic, sprawling, brilliant thing that completely takes on a life of its own and succeeds in sucking you into the lives of these characters. Chicketieboo has succeeded in making the Who universe her own and making the characters her own. There is real emotion underlying every action and spoken word and relationship. I LOVED the interactions especially between Ten and Martha as well as the Doctor and Rose. Let me just say that Martha is a different woman in this. A VERY different woman. This was written, I believe, before the third series started so quite a few things have changed as well. Heartbreaking as much as it is hopeful.

Story: The One Adventure He'll Never Have
Author: Aibhinn
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 62906
Author's Summary: In "Doomsday," the Doctor references "the one adventure I'll never have." What if he does have it? Reunion fic.
Characters/Pairings: 10/Rose, Martha, OCs, Jackie, Pete, Jack/Gwen, Team Torchwood, Mickey, Jake
Warnings: Graphic Sex

Recced because: I have a huge weakness for reunion!fic and baby!fic. Wouldn't you know it? This fic is both! Aibhinn does an excellent job with the characters and their interactions. The Martha in this story is a bit AU, as it was written before we knew very much about her, but it's an interesting look at what might have been. My husband told me about this one, and I give him many thanks, as I have come back to re-read this story several times. Characters: The Doctor (10th)/Rose Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Explicit sex
Word Count: 27,389

Recced because: Ten is living as the human John Smith, and it has nothing to do with the Family of Blood. Rose, Jackie, and Jack try to figure out what happened and get Ten to remember who he is, and shenanigans ensue. Kalima gets right into Ten's ADHD point of view, slips in a few nods to the old-school series, and keeps the adventure rolling along while staying brutally honest about the emotional fallout of Rose finally getting her man.

Series: The Way of Things
Author: shrak
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 193637 for the first story in the series, 2500-11000 words for the remaining stories
Author's Summary: A post-Doomsday story, set in the Alt!Verse. It's been over three years since Rose and the Doctor said goodbye. What happens when she not only meets his doppelganger, but has to work with him? A Blackpool/Doctor Who crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Peter Carlisle, DC Penington, OC's
Warnings: Graphic sex, violence

Recced because: This entire series is just completely, utterly epic and enthralling. I like the idea of Rose getting on with her life, and then getting hit upside the head by the fact that just because there's no Doctor in her new universe, that doesn't mean there isn't someone eerily like him, and all of the drama such a discovery could cause. Add in a compelling Torchwood-style murder mystery, and some extremely well-written OC's (I haven't seen Blackpool yet, but I really want to after reading this), and it's hard not to be sucked in to this AU. The length of the stories can be a bit daunting, but it's worth the time involved in the read.

Recced because: This is the first story that persuaded me (at least for the duration of the story) that Nine/Rose was actually possible. Which is impressive, considering that I tend to friendship them rather than 'shipping them. But the characters feel right, and it dances on the edge of whether or not this is a friendship or a 'ship, which is not an easy thing to do. That isn't all there is to this story, either; we have arguments, angst and illumination. The dreamworlds of each of them were insightfully built, and worth chewing over.

Warnings: None

Recced because: It's funny, it's moving, it's got brilliant dialogue and characterization with real depth. Set after "The Christmas Invasion," the story is told from Mickey's point of view as he sorts out his feelings about being the one left behind. Also, Mickey and the Doctor bond over upgrading household appliances. What's not to love?

Story: Jackie Tyler in the Fourth Dimension
Author: Cryptile

Rating: None given; I’d say all ages

Author's summary: Jackie Tyler hates time travel.

Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, with guest appearances from Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Rose Tyler, Ace McShane

Warnings: Author warns for swearing; it’s pretty mild

Recced because: If you love Jackie, as I do, this is the Jackie fic to read. It’s about Jackie’s relationship with the Doctor(s), with her daughter and also with life in general. If you loved Jackie and Nine snarking at each other, this story will have you alternately laughing out loud, exclaiming that’s EXACTLY right!, and maybe even shedding a little tear on occasion. In a way, it’s also a love story, but it’s not romantic love; it’s the love between two people who can never make up their minds whether they like or hate each other. There are two incredibly touching scenes, very subtly written, both of which left me with a lump in my throat. On the other hand, we have crossing timelines, a Welsh Doctor who plays the spoons, Rose defending the Earth with Ace and a missing finger. This story is unmissable.

Story: "The Woe of Unnecessary Name Tyler" and "Baby's Comin' Back to Me"
Author: Willdew
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1218 / 1973
Author's Summary: A "Doomsday" fix-it parody.  Unnecessary's mother always said she'd run off with the Valeyard if he promised to blow up 18th century France. The problem being that until now, they'd always figured she'd been joking.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Rose, Jackie, Pete, Martha, Romana III, Leela, Borusa, The Valeyard, other characters
Warnings: Crack.  (My warning, not the author's.)

Recced because: Obviously I am blatantly cheating here, but you get two fics for the price of one, so stop complaining.  The first story, "The Woe of Unnecessary Name Tyler", claims to be a parody of a "Doomsday" fix-it.  This isn't a genre with which I'm overly familiar, but that's okay, because Willdew is also taking a broad swipe at that deathless genre, the babyfic.  Yes, Rose has spawned, and if being half-Time Lord wasn't bad enough, Unnecessary Name Tyler (go read it, I'm not going to spoil the joke) has to contend with having the craziest female relatives this side of the void.

Time has obviously passed by the time we hit the sequel, "Baby's Comin' Back to Me", because as it opens, Rose has just, um, deserted the position of human ambassador to Gallifrey.  Needless to say, shenanigans ensue.

These fics are short and highly silly, but they're rich in humour, and the second one takes pieces of spin-off canon and runs with them, giggling all the way.  I love the characterisation of Rose, which is irreverent but affectionate:  It was an impossibility perhaps to ascertain the exact nature of Rose Tyler's worth. Unnecessary figured it had to do with people liking her quite a bit. It didn't matter what language you spoke or molecular composition you came in. The plain truth of it was, everybody fancied his mum. She was pink and yellow and scrumptious all over in a way that had the lads back at Torchwood cracking the sorts of jokes that would make someone with a bit more personality quite upset indeed.

It's messy and silly, but you'll never regret reading it.
