Well hello again; I have the pleasure of recc-ing this week! I shall start off with a recent gem:

Story: Twelve Hungry Men
Author: shinyford
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2610
Author's Summary: How do you choose your thirteenth regeneration?
Characters/Pairings: Original Character, Doctors 1 through 12
Warnings: None

Recced because: It is a quirky, funny, weird little tale that is as original as its narrative voice. First person POV is not the easiest thing to do but this one's just wonderful from the start, turns left when you might expect it to in some cases and then turns right back in directions you'd not thought of at all. It gives an outsider's perspective on an important summit with all of the canon doctors making cameos, and plays a lovely timey-wimey game of "spot the paradox" as it goes. Also, me being American and generally clueless, I learned the origin of a particular nickname I'd seen applied to one certain actor of the ninth Doctor persuasion. So go read it and feed the clever, clever author.

Story: Things Unsaid
Author: TigerKat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2521
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara deal with an accident. Which perhaps wasn't terribly accidental.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Susan, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's amusing, the situation they're in and how long it takes Ian to catch onto it. And the suggestion at the end about how they might have come to be in that situation in the first place. It's also sweet and funny how Barbara and Ian both feel the same way about each other, but won't bring themselves to say it.

Story: Lies Told to Children
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1274
Author's Summary: The Doctor explains why he travels with humans, or possibly just spins a tale.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, unspecified Doctor

Recced because: I thought I'd start off the week with the Doctor who started it all, and when it comes to First Doctor fics, nothing compares to this one. It's gorgeously written, deeply affecting, and just so goddamn smart. On one hand, the lies of the title refer to the xenophobia taught both consciously and unconsciously to the children of Gallifrey (a goldmine of a subject that far too few authors tap). On the other hand, the Doctor tells the story of his moral evolution and changing attitude towards humans by using the framework of a fairy tale--and a metaphor is a kind of lie as well. The way this story compares and contrasts these two kinds of lies, all through the lens of the Doctor struggling to understand what makes someone a good person--and more importantly, what makes someone a person at all--will leave you with the most wonderful combination of heartache, warm fuzzies, and geeky glee.

Excerpt:

This is false from beginning to end, of course. But there's more than one kind of lie. There are lies like the notion that electrons go around atoms in sedate planetary orbits: false but useful, good for making pictures in your head. And then there are the other kind.

You'll have to decide for yourself which sort this is. Imagine--

Imagine that you were born in a fairy-tale kingdom that shines like a diamond. Imagine you grew up there. And imagine that every day, in a thousand tiny ways, that kingdom whispered, we are the only real, true people in the world.

Hello! Back again for my third reccing slot, and very happy to continue the fine tradition of Calufrax. I'm the one who recs an absurd amount of Four/Master - or did last time. I shall try not to do that so much this time. Right! So, here is a story-

Oh.

Wait.

Story: Operator, Operator
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6107
Author's Summary: The Master works as a phone sex operator in order to kick-start his political career. That's it, really.
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master, One through Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: With such a prompt this fic could have been a disaster. In neveralarch's hands it becomes a thing of lightness and grace, deceptively funny (so funny - biting down on things so that nobody asks what the hell is so funny!funny) and actually dark and sad - while still being funny. Essentially, what I'm saying is, this fic is like Simm!Master distilled into a fic about the Doctor's outlandish sexual practices. And that it's hilarious. Please read it, even if you don't ship it.

Story: From the First -- Oh, Those Human Women!
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Teen, some adult themes
Word Count: 7,214
Author's Summary: As the 10th Doctor considers his possible future, or lack thereof, with Martha Jones, he is drawn to remember his very first human lover -- the Aztec woman Cameca. What is it about human women? Assumes familiarity with Gridlock and general NuWho history.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), Martha Jones, Cameca, Brannigan, Valerie
Warnings: As the author notes - sex scenes, but nothing graphic.

Recced because: Typically, sex scenes tend to make me blush and hide like an eight-year-old under the duvet. If they're tastefully done, I can dig 'em - I may be immature, but stronger stuff lurks beneath!

Anyhow, this is one of the best stories I've come across where sexual themes are the main focus of the plot. The First Doctor, by most accounts not the first to pop into mind where such scenes are concerned, manages to be delightfully accurate and adorable. Cameca is feisty. Martha cuddles kitten-babies. Kitten-babies. One of my favourite fics on Teaspoon.

Story: Sexy Dresses
Author: lyricwritesprose

Word Count: 1273
Author's Summary: There is a reason why the Doctor has never had all that much luck repairing the chameleon circuit.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (unspecified), Susan Foreman and The TARDIS.

Recced because:

After The Doctor's Wife I can't get enough of good TARDIS-pov fic, and this is one of the best I've read. Lyricwritesprose perfectly captures the TARDIS's voice, as portrayed by Idris.

Story:Ten Times Trouble
Author: TigerKat
Rating:All Ages
Word Count:~8100
Author's Summary:Ian and Barbara are getting married. All ten Doctors go to their wedding. Chaos ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, All Ten Doctors and assorted companions

Recced because:

I love fics that have all the different regenerations of the Doctor. Only the first 10, as this was written before Eleven, but still. I have a soft spot for Classic!Who, and Ian and Barbara as companions. This is a lovely view of their lives after they returned home, and I like how all the Doctors came to their special day. Showing that they won't ever be forgotten! By him, or by us loyal fans.

Story: Turn Your Back
Author: Singe
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21943
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor had a simple philosophy about public nudity. "If it embarrasses you, turn your back." Hmmm, what about the other Doctors? Here are ten humorous vignettes with a central theme of nakie-ness.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 10 and various companions (ETA for the intrepid calufrax tagger: Susan, Ian, Barbara, Victoria, Jamie, Liz Shaw, Brigadier, Mike Yates, John Benton, Sarah Jane, Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Melanie Bush, Ace, Jo Grant, Martha Jones)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Honestly, how can you pass up a story with that summary? Do you need more? Okay, it's ten stories that go effortlessly from era to era, that are quirky and imaginative and funny and outlandish. They are also well-written and fun, inducing a little bit of ear reddening blushes at times, but also exploring concepts of friendship, acceptance, vulnerability, and the tendency of the Doctor to gravitate to gift shops in more ways than one. And well, if it's not your cuppa you can always turn your back...

Small excerpt (chapter 7) )
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: Eternity in an Hour
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3138
Author's Summary: "Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, Susan, One.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's unusual and lovely, an good Hartnell-era adventure with believable technobabble, wonderful characterisation and a great ending. Ian and Barbara are the focus of this story and their trust in each other is the underpinning of this story, but Lurky McLurklurk also captures the way the First Doctor could be both a powerful, frightening alien and a doddering old man, and the 'unearthly child' aspect of Susan.

Story: A Game of Two Halves
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1316
Author's Summary: It's the best of Galactic Football Action, from Gallifrey.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Davros, Sutekh, The Celestial Toymaker, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), and quite a few others as well.
Warnings: Only if you have some in-built aversion to the game known variously as football/soccer...

Recced because:
Recced because the first time I read this it absolutely tickled me pink. Essentially, it's a pretty unique take on that concept that seems to haunt the dreams of all us fanfiction writers, the Ultimate Multi-Doctor Team-Up, but in the form of a football (soccer, that is, for those of you on the other side of the Pond there) match, with a motley visiting team of villains and monsters providing the opposition. The story is absolutely stuffed to bursting with clever references and asides to the wide and varied history of Who, both in-universe and real life; if you like a good in-joke (and I would tentatively place myself in that category), you will find much here to amuse you. What really elevates this story for me, however, is the style in which it is told. Truly oddball television football commentary is something of a dying art nowadays, but the author here captures its unique idiom perfectly, somewhat filtered through the prism of that Monty Python election results sketch which was mocking the same sort of thing. Certainly, if you're familiar with the way football used to be televised in the UK in the days before Sky Sports, you'll get an extra kick out of this, but even if not you'll still find a lot to like about this and a lot of humour in it, I'm sure. So go and read it - this instant!

Story: Laugh
Author: Kesomon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 637
Author's Summary: "As the 10th Doctor reaches his 10th regeneration, the TARDIS reflects."
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/TARDIS; Doctors One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten
Warnings: None

Recced because: Oh, gosh, how much do I love this story. It's just a little musing-fic - no dialogue, no action - but it's the TARDIS thinking about her Doctors: about the ways they smile and laugh, and about what makes each one of them unique. And while I can only speak to half the descriptions (I really need to watch more Who), Kesomon nails every Doctor I've seen. This little piece is, if I may be allowed the term, perfect. :-)

(Written pre-"The End of Time", so how Ten dies isn't quite accurate, but... *shrugs* That doesn't ruin the loveliness of this story in the least.)

Story: Distances
Author: Levendis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4907
Author's Summary: Running fast to stand still, or the more things change the more they stay the same, or a series of vignettes about fish and possible nows.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Adric, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Tegan Jovanka, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a fic about the Doctor - all of him, the essence of him. It is a series of vignettes, but they are unsorted and sort of higgledy-piggledy, consisting of briefly captured moments (or lifetimes), and most of the time it takes a few lines, or even paragraphs, before it’s possible to put a face, a time, a context, a ‘number’ to the Doctor in question. This disorientation works beautifully to highlight how he truly is the same man, how who he was/is/will be is all part of one continuous story. Some parts are sad, some happy; others funny, or profound, or deeply touching. But above all, this fic reminds me that the Doctor just is.

Hi, I’m [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook (vvj5 on Teaspoon), your reccer for this week. I’m a big fan of all eras of our amazingly unique show, and this week’s recs will take us on a journey from a junkyard in 1963 to the opening of the Pandorica in a sort of tour of the show’s history in sidesteps and small moments. (Or: here are some stories I like, anyway.) So - pleased to meet you – now take my hand, and let’s run!

On how the TARDIS became a Police Box:
Story: Why, It’s A Police Box!
Author: Primsong
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1400
Author's Summary:
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Primsong takes a tongue-in-cheek look at how it might have been that the TARDIS chose her current form, and how the chameleon circuit came to break. After all, isn’t it true that fifteen year olds (even if they may be Gallifreyan) find their relatives so embarrassing they could die? So Susan objects to the shame of living in a chest freezer in a junkyard, and the Doctor attempts, in an amusing catalogue of alternatives, to find something that will do. And of course, it ends with something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. The show wouldn’t be quite the same if she had been any other shape, after all.

Story: Murder at the Mill

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1016
Author's Summary: The case is solved, the killer in custody. But Sherlock Holmes has some loose ends to tie up.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None
Recced because: My first Doctor was the First Doctor - I was ten when the first episode aired, with no idea what to expect, and soon got hooked. Often he seemed to be impatient with the inferior minds around him; this crossover shows him meeting an intellectual equal.

Story: Anachronisms
Author: agapi42
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1820
Author's Summary: Time travellers aren't all that is out of place in England, 1848.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s charming and sweet and funny, and very Doctor Who-ish from start to finish.

This is another one of those stories that Big Finish must have been mad to turn down last year. And proof that in any incarnation the Doctor can’t do something as simple as posting a letter without nearly causing a temporal paradox, getting his companions into trouble and finding something alien hiding in an unlikely place.

Plus, it’s beautifully written, the characterisation of the early TARDIS team is lovely –Barbara worries over what the Doctor might do without her and Ian while the Doctor – well, after causing all of the above, the Doctor is off down the pub…

Story:Twelve Years and Four Psychiatrists
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3906
Author's Summary: Why Amy needed four psychiatrists. Cameos from Doctors 1-10.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Doctors 1-11 plus companions
Warnings:. None

Recced because: This is the best explanation I’ve read so far for Amy’s personality and how the twelve years of waiting affected her. The story is extremely funny, and could almost be considered crack!fic, except that the Doctors are all perfectly in character, and their encounters with Amy seem wonderfully plausible.

Story: The Shadow of Joanna
Author: LinworthNewt
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4082
Author's Summary: Between their departure from the Forest of Jaffa during the Crusades, and their arrival at the Space Museum on the planet Xeros, the TARDIS jumped a time track, and the travelers forgot what happened in the intervening time. Something lost, and something gained, passed between Ian and Barbara.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Vicki, the First Doctor, Princess Joanna; Ian/Barbara
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: This is darker than the events you saw on screen, and goes deeper. The true fate of the historical figure Princess Joanna is paralleled with Barbara's story, and events from canon are given real and very human consequences. Dovetailing into the serials The Romans, The Crusade and The Space Museum, this fic seems to turn the world 90 degrees, and let you see it in a new light. To quote the fic itself, history is not always kind to its heroes and heroines.

Story: Five Times the Doctor Got in the Way of Captain Janeway (and One Time They Got Along Just Fine)

Author: vvj5

Rating: All ages

Word Count: 5,526

Author's Summary: Captain Janeway doesn't think much of time travellers and higher beings who turn up on board her ship.  The Doctor doesn't take much notice of prime directives.  It's a tea/coffee thing.

Characters/Pairings: Doctors One, Three, Six, Eight, Nine & Eleven; Vicki, Jo, Peri, Charley, Captain Janeway, various Voyager crew members

Warnings: None

Recced because:

This week I’m trying to rec mainly authors who haven’t been recced here before, but since this bit of crossover fun merges my two favorite SciFi fandoms it caught my eye.  The Doctors and companions are all spot-on, and so are Captain Janeway and her crew.  It’s always fun to see someone interacting with multiple Doctors, especially when it’s non-linear.

Warnings:None, aside from minding you don't drink while reading, as this will place your keyboard in mortal peril

Recced because: It's Thursday and I need to rec something less than angsty before we head into the weekend? No, truly, this is an exceptional little story, filled with humour and whovian in-jokes. In fact, if you aren't laughing by the end, I dare say, you don't have a sense of humour. Enjoy.

Story: Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6792
Author's Summary: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side."
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Today's rec is a very special kind of crossover called a "fusion." Normal crossovers are when two canons meet. Fusions are when they synthesize.

I suppose the easiest way to describe the difference between a normal crossover and a fusion is using the colors blue and yellow. A crossover is a pattern: something simple like blue polka dots on a yellow background or something complicated like paisley. A fusion is the color green.

Story: The Grandparent Trap
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5108
Author's summary: Early into her stay on Dalek war-torn Earth, Susan meets a girl who looks exactly like her. (Doctor/Master)
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/The Master, Susan Foreman, Sharon, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki
Warnings: Spoilers for The Dalek Invasion of Earth as well as The Parent Trap, sort of. Needless to say, the plot goes a bit AU.

Recced because: This is the story of how Susan meets her long-lost identical twin Sharon and how they fix up the Doctor and the Master's mess with togetherness. It is my absolute favorite Doctor/Master fic in the world. Which, I suppose, isn't surprising, because it steals its plot shamelessly from one of my favorite movies as a child: The Parent Trap. By which I mean the original sixties version that used to play on the Disney Channel, with Hayley Mills (and Hayley Mills!), not the Lindsey Lohan remake which didn't even exist until I was in high school. (Speaking of Lohan remakes, the original Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster is also way better, although the book is best of all.)

ANYWAY, I am utterly impressed as a fic, both on its own merits (the writing quality is top-notch) and by its merits as a fusion. Every time I reread it I notice new echoes of the original Parent Trap movie. I just love this fic so very, very much and I hope you all will love it too.

“I’m a Time Lady,” the other girl said, which was also a very silly thing to say on Dalek-infested Earth, where the lords and ladies of time were not exactly welcome dinner guests.

“So am I!” Susan said, which was also- well, you get the idea.

“Maybe you’re one of the people I was supposed to be keeping an eye on,” the other girl said, frowning. “But I think grandpapa would have mentioned you looking exactly like me.”

“Exactly,” Susan agreed, “except for the hair.” Her own short hair had proved both fashionable (in the 1960s) and practical, but she couldn’t help envying the other girl’s long braid.

Story: A Shift in Perspective
Author:Persiflage
Rating:
 Teen
Word Count:
 50234
Author's Summary:
The Tenth Doctor goes missing and it's up to Martha Jones to track him down again, but it proves both harder and more instructive than she expects.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (All incarnations), The White Guardian, Torchwood, a plethora of companions
Warnings: Spoilers for just about everything. They are warned for in the author's notes of each section.

Recced because: Set a few months after series 4, "A Shift in Perspective" sends Martha on a journey that has her meeting the Doctor - yes, every incarnation of him. What stands out about this particular fic (and Persiflage's writing in general) is her nuanced and strong portrayal of Martha Jones: she's independent, she's strong, and she does what she has to do. Part of the charm of "A Shift in Perspective" is the fact that you get to see glimpses of Martha interacting with all of the Doctors (who are all impeccably characterized) as well as many of the previous companions. Moreover, the fic is fast-paced and features a solid plot alongside the solid characterizations. Overall, a wonderful fic to park yourself and read on a summer day (or on any day, really).

Story: The Old Man and the Police Box, and other impossible tales
Author:Rowena Zahnrei
Rating:
 PG
Word Count:
 12,838
Author's Summary:
In 1913, a British schoolteacher named John Smith wrote a short story destined to become a classic. Entitled "The Old Man and the Police Box," it tells the tale of an eccentric inventor from the land of Gallifrey who steals a miraculous time ship and sets sail for adventure.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Rose Tyler, Susan Foreman, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS
Warnings: For purists, Lungbarrow is taken as canon here.
Recced because: This fic uses the framing device of the Journal of Impossible things to great advantage. It is, essentially, a collection of the central stories that make the Doctor who he is related by one John Smith (and cleverly edited by Rowena Zahnrei). Each journal entry comes accompanied by an editorial gloss before continuing on with Smith's parts, which border on elegant stream of consciousness. The effective mix of styles for this collection is just part of its charm, however. The stories themselves weave through canon beautifully, piecing the Doctor together from the strange point of view of the outsider who is relating what we know as the inside. Overall, this is a wonderful collection of stories that you might find yourself reading through in one sitting, like you did with childhood storybooks.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,043
Author’s Summary: The Doctor introduces Dodo to the Time Space Visualiser - both receive unexpected surprises.
Characters/Pairings: the First Doctor, Dodo Chaplet, reference to Steven
Warnings: None

Recced because: Dodo is so rarely seen in fic, much less given positive treatment and I’ve always had a soft spot for the First Doctor, they both deserve more attention.  Gary Merchant was one of the first writers I came across back when I discovered the existence of this marvelous world called ‘whofic’ and I suppose it is well it was someone of such quality!  Often working in a partnership with friends, he is a writer with a wonderful knack for spotlighting neglected minor characters, small moments and subtle turning points in the development of characters and plots.  Any reader delving into his extensive works will find several well-crafted treasures there that are a pleasure to read.

This particular short story is relatively light and somewhat introspective, crowned with a surprise cameo and an excellent subtle joke for those familiar with the long term history of the show and its popular promotion.  I won’t give it away, go read and see what I mean.

Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Author's summary:The Doctor always hides behind something or other. Usually, it's himself.
Characters/pairings:Ace McShane, Adric, Barbara Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Charley Pollard, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, Martha Jones, Peri Brown, Rose Tyler, Susan Foreman, Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (all of him).
Warnings: none.

Recced because: Well this one's just lovely. Touching, and sad, and a it painful, but lovely. A collection of moments, from both Old and New Who, that make you want to slap the Doctor and hug him all at the same time. And most importantly, catches the very essence of the Doctor in such a beautiful manner.

Recced because: Just knowing that this fic exists fills me with unholy glee. It's the sort of thing that I was hoping someone would write after last fall's Children In Need preview scene and I was so happy to find out that someone did. Every single one of the ten scenes that make up this fic is brilliant in its own way and every single character is drawn as if from life. The Sixth Doctor bit is especially hilarious. I also loved the Seventh Doctor bit for Benny's diary entries and the Third Doctor bit for containing one of my own personal ships. They're all good bits, however. Highly recommended for everyone.

Hello! It's been over a year since I last recced for Calufrax. I'm very glad to be back.

Story: Escape Plan C Foreman
Author: Skadi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 687
Author's summary: She is born in a Time Agency prison, in the year 4857.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are a number of questions surrounding the secret origin of Susan Foreman: What happened to her parents? Why did she and the Doctor leave Gallifrey? And, perhaps most importantly, on a planet where people are named things like Braxiatel, Rassilon, and Romanadvoratrelundar, how did she end up with so human a name as Susan? This fic contains some of my favorite answers. Short but sweet, it manages to provide a logical and original origin story for Susan and contains a lot of concepts--such as the circumstances surrounding her birth--that I wish I'd come up with myself.

Story: Universal Constant
Author: nix nada
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1138
Author's Summary: It's classic Doctor Who, with a twist. Only, the twist is at the beginning, not the end. Or is it?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor, Susan, the TARDIS
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's elegant, ominous, and manages to engage our sympathies on behalf of our favorite over-sized blue box in the space of just eleven hundred words. A different take on two subjects that have been fandom favorites forever: the beginning, and the end.

This is AU with new Who, but it's satisfying and self-contained on its own. (Very self-contained.)

Recced because:

The Doctor’s life has never been an easy one. There have been loses and sacrifices every step of the way – and gains, at the same time. This is a concise history, economical, and pulsing with everything that makes the Doctor the Doctor across all of his incarnations, in the face of any loss or confrontation:

The faith and love he shows his companions, his sorrow when he must let them go, and the regret when cannot save them.

Story: Too Long in a Cage
Author: Primsong or [livejournal.com profile] primsong on LJ
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1336
Author's Summary: "Did they really think they could hold him? Four vignettes."
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Primsong is one of the best Classic Who writers in the fandom. Most of her stories have already been recced on this comm, but the ones that haven't took me all day trying to decide which one to rec!

I finally settled on "Too Long in a Cage", her exploration of the Doctor's personality over his first four lives. Four short vignettes follow him from leaving Gallifrey, through "The War Games" and through his exile, to "Robot" and his new discovery of freedom.

"Too Long in a Cage" is another of those stories every fan should read - from those who saw Troughton's lost stories on first run, to the youngest Tennant fangirls, and everyone in between - anyone who loves the Doctor will enjoy Primsong's loving portrayal of his early years in this fic.

(And if you're not yet familiar with Classic Who, there's no better introduction than Primsong! I know whereof I speak; I was quite prepared to dislike the Third Doctor till I got hold of her writing. And just look at me now! *huggles plushie!Three*)

Story: Six Times the Doctor Loved and Lost (and Once He Didn't)
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1723
Author's Summary: As you do.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Jamie McCrimmon, Romana (I & II), Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th), the Master, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story takes us through seven vignettes depicting a few of the Doctor's important relationships. At a first glance it looks deceptively simple, but scratch the surface and you realise it actually hides quite a lot of insight. Together, the seven snippets form a whole that somehow manages to make me smile and break my heart a little at the same time.

Story: Fade and Flower
Author: Agapi42
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2343
Author's Summary: “To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.”
Characters/Pairings: Susan/David, Barbara/Ian, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to have a happy Susan ending, even if it starts at the beginning with a crash landing in a junk yard. This does have a bit of a fractured style to it, but I feel like that adds to the story. This is an interesting look at Susan as she lives her life and deals with some of the consequences of other people messing with time.

Story: Chocolatey Gloop!
Author: The Secretive Bus
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,359
Author's Summary: Trying to keep one step ahead of the Daleks as they pursue him through time and space for the Taranium core, the Doctor shakes paws with a rabbit.
Characters/Pairings: Sara Kingdom, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st), Mavic Chen, Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: Written as an additional episode set amid The Daleks' Master Plan, Chocolatey Gloop! features an adventure with One, Steven Taylor, and Sara Kingdom. This story is noteworthy not just for its use of this rare TARDIS team, but for the skill with which The Secretive Bus writes the characters and the overall (highly entertaining) tone of the story. The "voices" of One, Steven, and the Daleks are particularly outstanding throughout, while the premise is quirky, unique, and funny, very much in keeping with the mood of some of the more eccentric episodes of One's era. The result is an entertaining story with superb characterizations, that fits neatly within the overall storyarc.

Characters/Pairings: Ben/Polly, First Doctor, Second Doctor, Jamie.
Warnings: None, I think.

Recced because: Ben/Polly is pretty much on the same scale as Ian/Barbara when it comes to Companions Who Obviously Married Each Other. This story is packed with charm and sweetness, just like our lovely couple.

Recced because: This is a kinkmeme story, which of course means that it's smutty. However, the porn - while lovely in its own right - is made even lovelier by Barbara and Ian being in character and Barbara getting her History on. Admit it, you all think they got it on in the Roman villa!

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2263
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Vicki and Steven journey over land and sea to make a date with history.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Vicki, Steven Taylor
Warnings:None

Recced because: I should confess here and now that I had this story written for me in [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen, but, it’s a high treat and no mistake - I can‘t miss it out. For starters it’s that rare creature in fic, a straight historical (set in early 20th C America). What’s more, it’s a straight, fun historical that features a undeservingly neglected TARDIS team and makes full use of their characters. Only Vicki would have the boundless enthusiasm needed to overcome the obstacles in their race against time, the Doctor’s love of the many old-fangled vehicles they encounter is charming and, as for Steven - well, his wish is what drives the story and to reveal it would spoil the ending. You’ll just have to read it and find out.
