Hello, everyone! I'm very excited to be back reccing at Calufrax for the second time! My primary ship is Ten/Rose, so a chunk of my recs will involve that pairing, but I've also got several recs lined up for you involving 11th Doctor era characters...and one interesting look at the Cybermen conversion process. :)

So, without further ado...here's my first rec of the week!

Story: The First and Last Time
Author: Incurable Romantic
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2382
Author's Summary: River Song senses her time with the Doctor is growing short on a visit to Paris. Short, sad, angsty one-shot.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River, with hints of Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: As a Doctor/Rose shipper who also really likes Eleven/River, this was a perfect mesh. It's a heartbreaking story, told from River Song's (3rd person) POV, and captures the bittersweet nature of her timey-wimey relationship with the Doctor. It also captures just how heart-wrenching it would be to love someone who still loves somebody else.

He picked up a bunch of flowers wrapped in white paper that were lying on the table. “These are for you,” he said, thrusting them at her. It wasn’t the first time she had received flowers from him. She hoped it wasn’t the first time he was giving them to her.

“Thank you,” she said coyly, a flirtatious raise of one eyebrow and a tiny smirk on her lips. “They’re lovely.”

And they were. Carnations and baby’s breath. Sometimes it was lilies, sometimes irises, often painted daisies, occasionally a huge bouquet of a mix of beautiful, fragrant flowers without names from far flung planets. But never roses, and occasionally she wondered why. She had never asked. It felt like cheating, somehow. Spoilers.

Be sure to let the author know if you enjoy it! :)

Me again! Bit of a busy day today so today's rec is a little late! For that, have some PWP.

Story: Boxed In
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1,636
Author's Summary: Eleven/Dream Lord, anything dark and disturbing.
Characters/Pairings: Dream Lord, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: Dub!con, bondage, claustrophobia, sexual themes

Recced because: This is a dark one and will definitely be the only outward PWP that I rec, but I do have a thing for the Dream Lord and psychoanalysis, and so I don't think it's too much of an outlier from my interests. And besides it is, really, very hot, and hits quite a number of my kinks. The author writes a very believable plot - canon-wise, though how believable porn is in Doctor Who is, I suppose, in the eye of the beholder - and the voices are very accurate, which is really a plus when you read anything. It's also a nice insight into the Doctor's mind and his past relationships, and has a good syntax that progresses at a good pace and leaves you on a great cliffhanger that makes you entire re-think the Pandorica...

This is my last day for recs. Let's end where we began, with a bit of Doctor/Jack:

Story: Tourist Trap
Author: tweedymcgee
Word count: 1166
Author summary: Welcome to the fortieth century, ladies and gentlemen. Jack's found a new job. The Doctor's forgotten to read the guidebook.
Characters: Ten/Jack
Warnings: Explicit sex.

Recced because:
This makes me giggle every time I read it. Jack has a new job, which he excels at, but he's thrown off his game just a trifle when the Doctor, whom Jack hasn't seen for years, happens to wander through his door. But Jack is a professional, so he recovers quickly from his shock, and the Doctor is cheerfully oblivious to his slight discomfort. If Douglas Adams wrote slash, this is how I think it would read. Jack is befuddled but determined to do his job, the Doctor throws himself into local customs with enthusiasm, and the result is hot and funny.

I spent yesterday hunting for a good Four/Leela fic (Leela being my favourite classic companion), but the few good ones I found had already been recced. Ditto with every Doctor/Sarah Jane story I had in mind. So with a heavy sigh I turn my attention back to New Who. Fortunately there are gazillions of great New Who fics out there!

Title: The Square Root of Pi
Word count: 3483
Author: Topaz Eyes
Author summary:  The nightmare did not end when they closed the door on Midnight.
Characters: Ten/Donna
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:
Nothing beats a good hurt/comfort fic. There are, of course, a good many "Donna comforts the Doctor after Midnight" stories. This is a particularly good one, however, because both Ten and Donna are very much in character. The Doctor is wounded and defensive, and Donna is both consoling and sharp-tongued. It's easy enough for me to believe this might have happened after the episode!

I keep forgetting to say this, but I know you guys already know it-- if you like the story, go lavish love on the author!

Title: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
Word count: 1558
Author: Topaz Eyes
Author summary: It was time to accompany the Doctor back to his TARDIS.
Characters: Jackson Lake, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Fleetingly described sex

Recced because:
Well, first of all, how many stories feature a pairing between Ten and Jackson Lake? I haven't run across many, but it makes perfect sense to me-- they formed a very close bond in a brief amount of time. After all, if Jackson hadn't had other obligations, he might well have wound up travelling in the TARDIS. This story is a nice coda to "The Next Doctor," which fills in something we didn't see onscreen, but which seems quite believable. I love Jackson, and this story, which is from his POV, really manages to get across his formal speech patterns, his loss and grief, and his heartfelt concern for the Doctor's all-too-evident pain. It's a well-written and touching little piece about two wounded people seeking comfort from one another.

Story: Fourteen
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=35505&warning=Adult
Author: x_los
Summary: They were sleeping together at eight. In the literal “sharing a bed” sense.
Characters: Koschei and Theta aka The Master (Academy era) and The Doctor (Academy era), Ushas aka The Rani (Academy era.) Koschei/Theta pairing.
Word Count: 3411
Rating: R
Warnings: None
Recced because: Adorable Academy era friends to lovers Koschei/Theta story. Covers their friendship from age eight when they looked into the Vortex through the time they make love for the first time. Sweet, funny, warm and fuzzy, with a touch of drums related angst. Told from Koschei’s point of view, as he comes to realize that he wants to be more than friends with Theta.
Excerpt: “The next dream Koschei could remember was several nights later. Theta and Drax were starting up an all-ukulele musical act, but since they’d failed to properly instruct Koschei and Ushas in the ukulele arts, they would have to accept Ushi on tambourine and Koschei on the drums. There was some trouble about getting booked he really couldn’t remember the next day. The weird thing, he thought as he shaved his recently arrived facial hair, carefully omitting the fuzz at his upper lip (he was trying to grow a moustache), was that none of them even really liked Drax. He just sort of hung around. Koschei couldn’t imagine why he’d dream that Drax would be in lead-ukulele position opposite Theta when he was the clear choice for the role.”
paranoidangel: Ian and Barbara in Revolutionary France (Revolutionaries)
[personal profile] paranoidangel
Story: Vermin in the Lower Zoo
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2138
Author's Summary: What if 'The Edge of Destruction' had marked the end of the Doctor's moral ambiguity in a different way, and his character had transitioned not into a hero, but a villain? One who demanded punishment for insubordination, and a price for ferrying two stowaways home.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Non-Con

Recced because: Anyone who knows me knows that I don't read fic with sex in because the sec never seems to be important. So you know this one must be good. In this case the sex isn't important - but that in itself is important. It is a horrifyingly dystopian AU, but there is something compelling about it, in the way that Ian and Barbara deal with the situation they find themselves in, that makes it hard to stop reading and harder to forget.

Story: Something More
Author: Petunia Bowl
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 19,539
Author's Summary: The Tenth Doctor and Donna come to terms with what happened to him on Midnight.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Donna
Warnings: Sex

Recced because: Am I boring because I'm reccing the same author twice in a week? Probably. Do I care? Nope! Because Petunia Bowl is awesome enough to be recced everyday, I just wish she wrote enough stories for me to do that.
And this is one of my favorite romances ever, any fandom. It's short and sweet, but packs so much into every sentence, from the things the Doctor doesn't tell Donna, to Donna's slightly unwilling realization that maybe she does love the Doctor, after all, to one of the sweetest, hottest and most in-character sex scenes I've read in this fandom. Writing good sex scenes is an art, and far from every writer can do it. To do it well involving two characters who aren't together in canon, and do it in a believable way, that takes true skill, which Petunia Bowl has.

I've enjoyed this week, thanks for having me! Hopefully you've discovered some new, enjoyable stuff.

She’s not in love with him though, because that would be spectacularly stupid. )

Story: Hallucinations
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7,616
Author's Summary: It wasn't until Martha was on her way to America that the hallucinations began. A Year that Never Was story.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Amy Pond, Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith, Rory Williams, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: Sexual assault, violence, general YTNW-stuff.

Recced because: I mentioned earlier this week that I feel Martha was owed so much more by the Doctor for what she was through. I'm quite fond of fics where the Doctor is faced with all the horrors Martha that happened to her in his name, and Hallucinations is an amazing example of that genre. It's timey-wimey and a bit confusing and heartbreaking and a very realistic take of the world under Harold Saxon's rule. The splash of Eleven, Amy and Rory is a bitter-sweet addition.

I can't, I can't anymore, Doctor. Not after Japan. )

What do you mean it's Saturday? It's still Friday I tell you! In.. plenty of places... Like... Like...

Anyway. Moving on!

Story: To Err is Human
Author: Lilac Summers
Rating: Adult/NC-17
Word Count: 53,374
Author's Summary: Donna is the (un)lucky companion stuck with the Doctor in 1913 this time around; she's not quite sure how to deal with this sudden change in situation. Mostly she just blames the TARDIS. Uses season 3 episodes "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Donna
Warnings: Insanely funny situations, some sex and great angst

Recced because:
Who doesn't love a good HN-rewrite? And this is my absolute favorite ever, all categories. Not because it's Donna (even though that is lovely) but because it's brilliant on so many levels. It's so funny in places that you might wanna refrain from eating while reading (like when Donna steals ready-made food from the TARDIS because she can't cook.), seriously hot (John Smith, Donna, wall...) and at the same time, heart-wrenching (try reading the where John Smith begs for his life without tearing up!) and beautiful.

Lilac Summers is a fantastic writer, and even if you don't like D/D, you WILL like this because good writing is good writing, no matter the pairing, which Lilac Summers proves. She makes John Smith into his own man, not just the Doctor with lost memories and Donna is tossed between confusion, jealously, attraction, irritation and doubts, just as it should be.

Story: Conduct Unbecoming
Author: Sproid
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7229
Characters: Sergeant Benton, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, UNIT
Author's Summary: Benton messes up, the Brigadier shouts, and it's all really a sign of their affection for each other. Not that they realise this, of course.
Warnings: Explicit Sex
Recced because: Because there is not enough UNIT love in the world. Because Benton is adorable and the Brigadier is adorable and the Brig can be awfully stern to Sergeant Puppyface, but you can just tell they're so very fond of each other, and this story is such a wonderful exploration of that fondness (and eventual hotness) as it develops over time.

Story: Just Because They Protect You Doesn't Mean They Like You
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 14122
Characters: Amy Pond, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Owen Harper, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th)
Author's Summary: Working for Torchwood Cardiff means dealing every day with aliens, time travellers, annoying co-workers, and worst of all, tourists. A day in the life of someone who'd rather be somewhere else.
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: When I started reading this I was drinking coffee, and ended up with coffee over my keyboard. It's fun and extremely silly, a day in the life of Torchwood 3. Warts and all...

Before the excerpt I should mention the introduction, which adds a few more warnings including "language, character death, necrophilia, dub-con, excessive whining, incredibly offensive humour." I don't find it offensive, but tastes differ

***

The noise broke into the middle of Ianto's dream: a raucous buzzing and tweeting, like the repetitious caw of a thousand angry ... somethings. Birds? The dream morphed into terror -- giant, slouching, with skeletal black wings and razor-like beak -- then scattered to rags as he opened his eyes.

The noise continued.

Everything was dark. Ianto thrashed his limbs, did not encounter another body but did manage to unwind the blanket he'd wrapped around himself twice as he half-rolled, half-fell onto the floor. As he became more alert, he saw that he was nowhere near his bed but in fact had slept naked in the wardrobe.

His mobile kept ringing. He stumbled to where he'd dropped it on the night stand, flipped it open, and said in a sleep-roughened voice, "Yeah?"

"I woke you up."

Ianto rubbed a hand over his face. Events from the previous night made their presence known in his memory, pickled with a bit too much whisky and aged about three hours. "Did you catch the Weevil, then?" When the call came, Jack had kissed him stupid and told him to stay put. As Ianto had just experienced a fantastic orgasm, backed up against the wall of his wardrobe and buffered by shirts and suit coats, he hadn't been in the mood to argue.

"Yeah. Piece of cake. I didn't want to wake you, so I came back here."

"Thanks."

"I need you to get dressed and head in." Jack's tone was apologetic, but Ianto heard the distinct sound of his lover sliding back into boss mode. Jack may have sucked Ianto's brains out through points south last night, but this morning, he was all work.

Story: The Last Enemy
Author: Prochytes
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 9946
Characters: Gwen Cooper, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Suzie Costello, The Master (Simm)
Author's Summary: Christmas Day in the Master’s Cardiff. Gwen Cooper is still Gwen Cooper. She doesn’t have much time to work out why.
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing
Recced because: Gwen Cooper was one of the best characters in Torchwood, and I thought it was about time I recced a story that featured her. This one is a beauty, a Doctor Who / Torchwood crossover in which Gwen has to handle the events of The End of Time, with a little help from a very unexpected source.
It didn’t work on cats. The ebony ripple that had pulsed across the road two streets (eighty-seven heartbeats) back was still a feline. Ears flat against its head; eyes staring. Kitty couldn’t know what had just pissed all over the planet.

No hive-mind. The one she had pistol-whipped outside Asda (four streets, nine hundred and sixty-three heartbeats) had looked — briefly — just as surprised to see her as... (don’t remember, mustn’t remember, hold the thought by the rim so it can’t scald) as the first one. They weren’t sharing information telepathically.

He didn’t know she was coming, and this was still her town. Alien mastermind, my arse; you could live in Cardiff for twenty years and still not have a bloody clue what to do there of a Friday night. If she got the drop on him, she could take him.

How many times, though? Three? Ten? A hundred? Cardiff wasn’t a battlefield, now. It was a video-game, and not one where she got to be the shooter. Gwen Cooper had become the obstacle; the adversary; the poorly pixelated mook. Every time she won, he could restart the level. Harold Saxon only had to win the once.

And so Gwen Cooper ran for her life through the December dark (still fast, still very fast — the first trimester hadn’t yet got around to pilfering her pace), measuring out the streets of her city in footfalls and prodigal heartbeats, twisting her options like a blackjack player, and not making it up as she went along. Captain Jack Harkness had made it up as he went along, and hadn’t that ended well for everyone? Jesus fucking Christ, Jack, you had to go and bolt to the stars like the cheap little hustler you always were. Left our town with an exhausted, pregnant basket case for a champion.

Story: Hush
Author: lysia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2643
Author's Summary:
A slashy alternative take on the scene in the warehouse in 'End of Time' before the soldiers kidnap the Master. The Doctor finds his
nemesis in the wasteland and tries to protect him. The Master decides to play a game.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:   In the author's notes, lysia says she wrote this as a challenge to herself to escape from the trap of being too chatty when she writes.  I haven't been lucky enough to read any of her other stories, but I think she succeeds at her self-challenge.  There's no dialogue in the entire story, but it is gripping and personal and entirely captivating.

The relationship between the Doctor and the Master is so twisted I feel like I'd need a psychology degree to understand it fully.  There's an obvious power play dynamic between the Doctor and the Master in any incarnation, but Ten's desperation for a connection to his people makes the relationship between Ten and Simm!Master particularly messy.  In a lot of fics, that dynamic falls into some pretty dark territory, and can often ignore the fact that there is a deep connection between them.  I like lysia's take because while the Master does artfully pull the Doctor's strings and manipulate him through a mix of kindness and cruelty, in the end the Master knows when the game is over, and when it would go too far.  He lives to best the Doctor, not destroy him - whatever melodrama he may drum up, he loves the game far too much to risk losing his opponent.  And, no matter what face he puts on it, he needs the Doctor as much as the Doctor needs him.

Story: Supreme Courtship
Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6023
Author's Summary: From the Best Enemies Kink Meme: "Legally Blonde (the musical) crossover, Ainley!Master/Davison!Callahan. The Master is surprised to find an older version of the Doctor working as a cutthroat lawyer, but it's okay because older men are hot." Now with more Eight and Lucie, because Sheridan Smith!Elle Woods could not be ignored.
Characters/Pairings: Five/Ainley!Master, Eight, Lucie

Recced because: OK, so, logic dictates that I should probably choose something a bit more accessible (and I did say more serious... and I doubt x_los will thank me), but I want to rec this one, so, er, here it is!

Regarding the accessibility issue though and to bring us all up to speed, know this:
In 2010 'Legally Blonde: The Musical' (surprisingly excellent, despite being a musical adapated from a film)(which I also think is surprisingly excellent) opened on London's West End starring Sheridan Smith (who plays Eight's companion Lucie Miller) as Elle Woods, and Peter Davison (Five) as Professor Callahan, who is much more villainous than the movie version of the same character (one of his songs is called 'Blood in the Water') but who still makes a move on Elle towards the end. This spiffy video advert they did has some fun visuals of Smith as Elle, and Davison as Callahan (dancing). Really all you need to know is that Five's been chameleon-arched and now thinks he's a lawyer. I just think the Legally Blonde stuff is a fun background.

Anyway, so it's a good and amusing idea. Five is so totally unlike Callahan, who is quite like Ainley!Master. There's a lot of humour to be derived from that and from misunderstandings, etc, and if you're read other x_los stuff you'll know she's good at humour. She's also very good at a) writing porn - so if you like that sort of thing, there is some of that and b) writing the Doctor/Master relationship. Nothing is easy and no conversation isn't actually a confrontation, but they like each other enough that it works if either of them are willing to admit it.

This fic also has something else to recommend it - Eight and Lucie! One of my all time favourite Team TARDISes. They are very good here, particularly Lucie, who brings some fun meta-commentary on the Doctor/Master relationship towards the end. In short: I like this fic very much – I hope you enjoy it.

Story: Void Stuff
Author: gallifreyburning
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,194
Author's Summary: "Ninety-three trips, including our first stop in this universe and all those dimension cannon jumps afterward. By now, I'm as steeped in the stuff as the Daleks and Cybermen were at Canary Wharf," Rose whispers, the back of her neck prickling and cold. "But you've only been once in this body, haven't you, Doctor? Just once, like Pete."
Characters/Pairings: Ten (duplicate)/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: A 3-D movie unexpectedly reminds Rose of her many, many trips through the void, and all the terrible things she saw before she finally found the Doctor – none more terrible than her memories of shock and depression post-Canary Wharf. She learns to move past that and embrace what she has with him now after a very sexy encounter in a chip-shop bathroom, of all places – and while the location itself may lack romance, the romantic connection between the two characters feels very real.

Title: Difficulties on Theory
Author: Louseifer
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4139
Author's Summary: There are a lot of flaws in the process of evolution; the Doctor learns, slowly, in the dark, that nothing ever really changes.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recc'ed Because: Why yes, before I discovered Ten/Master fic I was a good little gen girl. But really, the world is better for Ten/Master crazy, love-hate relationship. And the sex and bondage. This one is dark (literally and figuratively), hot and twisted and kinky and alien, but it twists itself right back into shape again at the end. The Master and the Doctor need each other like yin needs yang; neither can ever stop. It is listed as incomplete; I think either the author didn't notice the "Complete" button on Teaspoon, or they imagined this as the start of a series. Anyhow, it stands alone amazingly as is, and the end is creepy in its ambiguity. If you like NC-17 Ten/Master fic, spare on dialogue but spot-on when it comes, and everything wrapped around a brilliant study of the characters, yeah, go on and read it. Not at work, though.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to rec for you all this past week! :) It's been a lot of fun, and I hope you've enjoyed reading these stories as much as I have! For my final rec, I give you a Doctor/Rose love story that spans across several eras. :)

Story: Shades of Blue ~ Cerulean
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 46,842
Author's Summary: Trapped in the parallel universe, Rose finally thinks she's found the Doctor, but it isn't exactly the one she expects. She falls in love with him anyway. The first story in the "Past Present and Future" series.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: This is the first story in one of my all time favorite series. It is the story that first introduced me to the idea of--and made me fall in love with--the Eighth Doctor/Rose pairing. The growth of their relationship--and the Doctor going through all sorts of assumptions and feelings along the way--is beautifully portrayed. So too is the underlying tension that comes with loving a Time Lord (and being a Time Lord in love) across multiple regenerations. I love the idea of a timeless love--a love that exists on some core level: soul mates. And the romantic in me loves the idea the the Doctor and Rose love each across all time and in all forms.

It's well written, with wonderful characterizations and raw emotions. It's a believable journey; Rose knows him, but he doesn't know her, and though their courtship is whirlwind, it isn't without its difficulties. Sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's a beautiful kind of sad--the kind of sad that only comes from knowing that there's a ticking time bomb on their relationship. Still, there's a light at the end of the tunnel; the series as a whole is about Rose's journey back to the Tenth Doctor, and her love for all the other versions of him she meets and re-meets along the way. The Eighth Doctor is the beginning, but he isn't the end--and that's what makes it all the more magical.

It's the beautiful beginning of an epic tale, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have!

Recced because: Ten/Rose romance fic has, from the get-go, been my favorite to both read and write. This story is one of my absolute favorites, and was among one of my early finds on Teaspoon. It is erotic, but also emotionally evocative. It's both beautiful and bittersweet. It's not easy to write smut and capture the essence of the characters, but this author does so beautifully. And while the setting for this is sex, it's the underlying feelings that make it so poignant. It presents a picture of the pair in a vulnerable moment--sweet and loving, yet so very fleeting.

Story: You sheltered me from the storm
Author: Fate_Incomplete
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,683
Author's Summary: The first year in Stormcage had been the hardest, as River came to realise just how much time she would spend alone, waiting. Yet an unexpected friendship, and the ever expanding entries in her diary of adventures with the Doctor, made the sacrifice of keeping her secret worthwhile. She lived for the friendship and love of two men, but more importantly, she learned to live for herself. In the end, she made her life her own, and the legend of River Song grew in its own right.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Character Study, Crossover, Standalone

Recced because: I think part of what truly makes this show is the amazing characters that you find within it. In the end, the show (though centered around the Doctor, much as the characters are) is not about the Doctor. It is about other people, how they relate to him - what they mean to him and he to them. Two of the most enigmatic, engaging, funny and yet tormented characters are none other than Captain Jack Harkness and River Song. There have been many tales written about them meeting - all of them flirty or funny or dangerous or angst ridden. This fiction captures all of those aspects and so much more. The Doctor blips in now and again, but while he is the main drive of this tale, the center and main portions are lined around two people who love him in vastly different ways, for reasons that are opposing, yet similar all the same. These are two people who lives have been defined BY the Doctor - even when he is not there (especially when he is not there). They have more than common ground to meet on - and somehow, despite their ties (or maybe because of them), they forge a relationship separate from the Doctor, but made richer because of him. Honestly, this is one of my favorite writers - so you will always see one rec by me about her work. She has a beautiful grasp of character dynamics and settings that make you feel every moment, every word. I'm sure you've read other crossovers with Jack and River. But you haven't even touched on these two until you have read this one.

This week, Who fans are mourning the departure of Amy and Rory from the TARDIS, so here’s a story devoted to them.

Story: Its Eyes Are for the Stars
Author: Canaan ([livejournal.com profile] canaana on LJ)
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5378
Author's Summary: The Doctor thinks he's so old, but Rory remembers two thousand years.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Jack Harkness, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th; )Amy/Rory, pre-Eleven/Amy/Rory
Warnings: explicit sex

Reced because: I love Rory Williams. I’m fond of Amy, but I adore Rory. He is a classic of a certain type of Companion -- the ordinary person who discovers how extraordinary he really is. In this story, Amy questions Rory about the nearly two thousand years he spent as a plastic Roman soldier guarding her in the Pandorica. He tells her about some of the people he knew and cared about during that long vigil.

This is a story about love and friendship and sex, and the ways that they do (or don’t) overlap. And like all of Canaan’s stories, it is beautifully written.

*flushes*
Ok, guys I am oh so sorry for being 3 days late. My RL has been nuts!!! However, know that I am actually on the ball now, and I am super-excited to rec for you this week! Hope you enjoy some of my favorities, and I promise to keep the Ten/Rose to a minimum :)

First off:

http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=20452
Story: Mysterious Ways
Author: Aenaria
Rating: Adult
Word Count:57076
Author's Summary:She's been lost, found the key, unlocked the door to the universe, wandered about, took a detour, stopped, stopped some more, then started again. Now, finally, Rose Tyler is on her way home. The Sonnetsverse reunion story. Diverges from S4 canon after 'The Unicorn and the Wasp'. Please note rating change for Chapter 15.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, Donna, Martha, Original Characters
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because: This is actually the penultimate story in a 'verse called "Sonnets Writ on Skin," which you don't HAVE to read to get this, but I highly reccomend you do, cause it's amazing. This is my favorite reunion fic of all time. Rose has a little sister named Gemma, and Gemma and a few other original charcters really make everything pop. They way the story unfolds it just gorgeous, and I can't say enough about it.
[identity profile] blackrose42.livejournal.com
Story: Mating Habits
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=43831&warning=Adult
Author: TARDIScrash
Summary: “Survival” as a Five serial. The Doctor ends up infected and stranded with the Master.
Characters/Pairing: Fifth Doctor/The Master (Ainley)
Rating: R
Word Count: 4724
Why recced: Great premise! An expansion of “Survival” where the Doctor and the Master, both under the influence of the Cheetah Planet, are stranded together and give in to their animal instincts. Intriguing analysis of their relationship and the way that the Master’s life revolves around the Doctor. And an adorably happy ending that you wish could really happen.
Excerpt: “This other creature, the Master’s mate, the Doctor, the only thing in the Master’s kingdom that could be his equal, was the focus of the Master’s life, and nothing brought him more joy than caring for his mate and seeing that he was as content as the Master. This seemed to the Master like something that had always been, a basic truth of nature. The sun rose and the night fell and he was bound eternally to the Doctor.”

And two.
I couldn't help myself.

Story: Gallifreyan Style Guide
Author: Pondering Amelia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4,022
Author's Summary: Billions of private, pornographic dialects had been annihilated when Gallifrey burned. The Doctor is relearning what it means to build a relationship.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: Again, not specifically for the pairing. The Linguist in me just spazzes at fics like these. I've always wondered what Gallifreyen would sound like and, to be honest, I'm glad they never attempted to put it into spoken word in canon, because that gives us writers all the freedom we want when we fanfic. Another thing I like about this is that it 'explains' the Doctor's apparent asexuality. I always assumed it was a telepathic thing, but I like the idea that it might be a linguistic, thing. Gallifreyan is pretty much a dead language now, after all, and I bet it has sounds we humans cannot even pronounce (probably has something to do with bypasses etc.). Language is a huge part of someone's identity and culture and heritage - but what if language was essential to one's sexuality as well? It is certainly an interesting concept.
Just like with the other smutty fic I recced today, there is more to this than smut. We get a window into the Doctor's psychology and thoughts, we get to see him opening up and because the focalisation here is so astute I really did have the feeling I understood, at least to a degree, what the Doctor's motives might be for keeping relationships at a distance. Jack, of course, is being his own straight-to-the-point self.
Pondering Amelia's way of writing captured me a long time ago, because I love the style she has. It's poetic without being soppy, the metaphores fit and add to the atmosphere that this fic breathes. The dialogue works really well, too. The Doctor and Jack trying to make up for a loss of Gallifreyan tradition as well as possible could've seemed really clumsy and awkward when voiced wrong, but instead it just shows intimacy and that only serves to again give us a deeper understanding of the Doctor's point of view.
I think I can just keep on quoting little bits and have nerdgasms over how clever they are until the end of time, but you'll just have to read if for yourself and experience it ;)

It's Friday. Freya's day. Something with love. And smut.
I couldn't just pick one fic, so I picked two - here's one.
(I'm procrastinating, I should be reading medieval manuscripts.)

Story: Finger on the Trigger
Author: jinniyah
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,546
Author's Summary: Eleven has an inner gun-kink he isn't aware of yet. River fully takes advantage of this.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This is not only very good smut (I appreciate good, original smut), but also well-written. The Doctor and River are very much in character and, more importantly, their timey-wimey not-in-syncness plays an important part in the story, too, which not only fits with canon very well, but also keeps the reader on his/her toes.
The dialogue is quick and witty (see preview) and really adds to the action that takes place. As much as this is a smutty oneshot, I do like it when there is a bit of framework involved - this isn't just River and the Doctor doing nasty things, there's a fair bit of psychology involved. After all, River knows something the Doctor doesn't (always a good place to start) and gently pushes him into knowing himself just that little bit better (through sex) and we get to see it.
River has the upper hand in the story and it is really interesting to see the way the Doctor responds to the things she does (I personally especially like the babbling - 'Nervous? Of course I'm not nervous! Not at all. I'm a Time Lord, I walk in eternity. Do I look like I'm nervous? No! Don't answer that!'). The 'power' dynamic in their relationship in canon is fascinating to begin with and this is developed in this fic very well, too. It could totally have happened at some point.
Well, and I may have a bit of a thing for dirty talking - and River does that very well.

Rec number two, typed up the evening before tomorrow because, well.. I have time to spare which I may not have tomorrow - and I have no time machine, sadly.

Story: A Tale of Suspension: Lonely in the Dark
Author: PhoenixDragon
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 26671
Author's Summary: That is after all, what one did while in distress - put out a call, see if anyone in the whole wide universe will answer. Just to see (if on mere chance) an answer would be forthcoming. Either way - when one was in dire straits (distress) one would be happy to see anyone - anyone at all, right? Turns out that assumption is incorrect.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: No, this is not just me returning the favour because PhoenixDragon recced me for no good reason ;D.
I've always wondered what the dynamics between Eleven and Jack would be like. The Doctor is so different from his previous two regenerations, after all - not in the least in his relationships with humans and his emotions are so different. I suppose, because it is not canon that these two meet, that gives us writers a myriad of possibilities in which these two could bump into each other and I have read plenty. This story, though, was specifically captivating to me. (Plus, well, I'm finally getting round to watching Classic!Who and this has references to earlier regenerations.)
What better way to bump these two together and test them, after all, than by accident and with confusion and crossed-wires? It is really a getting-to-know-each-other all over again and yet it really, really isn't. Both men have changed and that makes it sort of a fresh start - but on the other hand they have quite a past together full of unsaid things and whatnot.
I also love PhoenixDragon's choice of wording. Perhaps this is just because English is not my native language and yet a language I love passionately, but reading the way in which she writes things is like eating my way through a plate of tiny wonderful cakes with each a filling better than the other. (Bad, bad metaphor, but I'm sure you get the gist of what I'm getting at. It is late and it is my bedtime and I may be feeling a little bit lyrical.) The characters do not only speak, but the focalisation (if you forgive me for using such a technical term) is exquisit and subtle and yet pervasive. It really draws you in.
A wonderful painting of how deep their relationship really stretches.

Hi all! *waves awkwardly*
So my name is Bianca, a whovian hailing from the Netherlands, and I'll be reccing for you this week (:
I understand that for a part of you it's still Sunday, but well.. let's just view this as a bonus than, shall we? ;)

Besides, if you're going to read this fic (and I think you should) you're going to need the extra time...

Story: Terminal Decay
Author: Unslinky
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,071,407 (yes, you read that right - this is not a typo)
Author's Summary: Set shortly after The Planet of the Dead. AU to everything Doctor Who and Torchwood after that.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, K-9, Leo Jones, Luke Smith, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Tish Jones, Tom Milligan, Torchwood (I've only copied the list of characters Unslinky indicated on Teaspoon because I do not want to spoil what happens in the story! :))
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: This fic took Unslinky nearly two years to complete and it has just over a 1,000 chapters. I came across it when the fic had been growing for some time already, but rapidly caught up and then followed it all the way to the end. I realise three million words may seem rather daunting, but trust me when I say that once you start reading this fic, it becomes part of your life shockingly easily and quickly. (I'm rereading it at the moment - worth every step of the way.)

So what makes this fic so captivating? There is more Doctor!Whump out there in which he (nearly) dies [keeping open the outcome so as not to spoil you guys], after all, and those are not as epically long as this fic. There are several reasons.
One is that Unslinky's characterisation is amazing. Unslinky knows how people work, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh, and she manages to write the dilemmas that come with being/caring for a dying alien, the last of his kind, in a way that is incredibly realistic. There are no good or bad guys in this story - everyone has two sides. There will be moments when you really hate a particular character (at least I did), but later that will always be put into perspective because the reasons for their behaviour are revealed and you suddenly understand that even though sometimes people say or do things that make you want to punch them in the face, they're not all bad. Every story has two sides and nothing is ever only black or only white.
That brings me to my second reason: realism. The Doctor is suffering from a degenerating disease, which will kill him if nothing is done, and a lot of people (see character list and then some) get involved. That means there are a lot of angles to be written, a lot of point of views, tensions, opinions - not to mention that an illness as seriously as the one from which the Doctor suffers in this story simply can't be fixed in two or three chapters. The illness is described very naturally, over a period of time, and Unslinky gives us readers wonderful medical details and descriptions without making it too brainy too understand - and then of course there is also the psychological side. The Doctor has to accept that he is ill and that he needs help, he bonds to people in entirely new ways, but the other characters are also affected - they have doubts, are hurt, hope, work, scream, cry (everything you might expect of someone with a close friend who is dying). Rather than rush through events towards a happy ending [or not!], Unslinky isn't afraid of putting the main storyline on hold to be introspective or have a flashback. This doesn't impede the story at all, however, but rather adds to it, shaping the characters and making them incredibly real.
In the end, this didn't feel like a story, but rather as a journey. It has made me look at some characters in an entirely new way and by the time I got to the end I didn't think 'oof, I've finally read it', but rather 'why is this over already?'.

And here is my last rec for the week! I've saved one of my absolute favourites for last, enjoy.

Story: Coaster Castles (And Other Sturdy Defenses)
Author: rallalon
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 8106
Author's Summary: He's only a bloke in a bar, but he's a bloke in a bar who needs her
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Explicit sex, Angst

Recced because: How can something so angsty be so amazingly hot? Ten, in a vulnerable moment after season three and the trip on the spaceship Titanic, is heartbreaking in this fic. Rallalon writes Ten and Rose to perfection and does quite well at the smutty bits *waves face* but it is the emotion that makes me remember this, even 2 years after I first read it. The formatting with double spacing is a tad off putting but it is worth persevering and getting to the heart of the story.

Plus the last sentence. Ugh, my heart still clenches when I read it. If you are partial to the Rose/Ten ship and haven't read this fic yet, then I advise reading this poste haste!

Rec: Paean

merryghoul: road (mini three)
[personal profile] merryghoul
Story: Paean
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3806
Author's Summary: There are different forms of want, and different forms of need.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Ainley), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Other), The Rani
Warnings: Swearing, off-screen sexual content, some consent issues.

Recced because: I like reading asexual character fic. I never thought a character like the Master could be portrayed as asexual, but after reading this story, I was convinced.
neveralarch: (Default)

Story: A Country of Smaller Wars
Author: levendis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 23,303
Author's Summary: Looking for home in all the wrong places: Narvin, professional voyeur and artful patriot, follows his ex-president, a con-man, and a savage through alternate universes only to find himself pretty much, but not quite, back where he started.
Characters/Pairings: Narvin/Romana II, Leela, Irving Braxiatel, K-9
Warnings: Swearing.

Recced because: This is one of the best Gallifrey fics I've ever read, and that's already a quality subset of Doctor Who fandom. This rec is later than I expected, because I got so caught up in rereading the story that I kind of forgot I was reading it for a reason.

A Country of Smaller Wars follows the plot of the Gallifrey series of audios from Coordinator Narvin's perspective, before moving beyond the latest audios and into speculation for the next ones. The fic takes knowledge of the Gallifrey series more or less for granted, but if you haven't listened to Gallifrey I really recommend the audios as well - personally, I think they're the best work Big Finish has done in the Doctor Who universe. And then you can come back and enjoy the fic!

If you've already listened to Gallifrey, then you should definitely read A Country of Smaller Wars. It has some fascinating conceits and a really great take on Narvin, and Narvin and Romana's relationship. Also, a fantastic Leela. I am running out of adjectives, here - you should just read this.

Story: Voices like Bittersweet Needles
Author: Novemberchild
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 7,741
Author's Summary: The Doctor has these boxes throughout the TARDIS. Small cubes, with a light shining outward. Jack is pretty sure they're not just lamps.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Eleventh Doctor, TARDIS
Warnings: Explicit Sex - Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: This story is what drew me to this author (and happily from this, we have become very dear friends)! Novemberchild has a unique and powerful grasp of what drives a character - and definitely is not afraid to push limits, boundaries and pressure points to drive a story. Each tale from this writer has a raw, gritty quality that leaves you rooting for more, even as you fear (for) and exalt (with) the characters. Good or evil, her take on these beloved characters will grip you and you will walk away with insights that make you question and fall in love all over again. This story especially gripped me, as I know the Eleventh Doctor holds his pain close and is very selfish about sharing. Jack is one to not quit though. Our Captain has always been one to push the envelope, even if the consequences are ones he prefers to not face. Both of these characters have such big hearts, are so desperate lonely - and have that fear of opening up. But they do have that drive to care, to help others. Let this author show you how they can do those things together, for each other, as only Jack and the Eleventh can!

Story: Half Sick of Shadows
Author: EAWeek
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 58,450
Author's Summary: The barren planet Gossan holds a powerful secret, one that is somehow connected to River Song’s release from prison. Can River and the Eleventh Doctor defeat the Papal Mainframe, or will they become its prisoners for all eternity?
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Madame Kovarian, River Song/Eleventh Doctor, Other Doctors, OCs
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing - Action/Adventure, Horror, Mystery, Romance

Recced because: Well, quite frankly, I urged EAWeek to get a Teaspoon account so I could REC THIS FIC, if that tells you anything. I'm not a shipper (or rather, my ships are slashy rarepair), so in general Doctor/River is not my ship. But this fiction is so flawless, it made me ship them - if only for this fiction alone! A gorgeous tale that has perfect characterisation and all the action and adventure you could ever ask for from a Doctor Who fic. It also gives us a bit of background into Doctor Song's early years, as well as some startling insights into The Doctor himself (both current and past). A fiction that goes from the beginning to the end of The Stormcage and takes on the Silence in a big way you just won't see anywhere else. The real question is - how could I not rec this fiction?

Apparently the vast majority of my favorites tab is Eleven-era fic, but I'll try to mix things up as far as different characters/pairings go.  To that end, today's second rec!

Story: The man who
Author: honeynoir
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2893
Author's Summary: The Doctor winds up undercover as a teacher in Leadworth, and finds out a bit more about 18-year-old Mels's obsession than he wants.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River (Mels)
Warnings: None, but the author's note includes this disclaimer: Rating-wise, this belongs somewhere between Teen and Adult. There’s no smut, but they’re still teacher and student. Mels is 18.
Recced because: This is a very clever story in which the Doctor and Mels match wits and size each other up. Honeynoir does a great job of balancing the sexual tension, and the story is very witty and classy. Here's an excerpt:

below the cut )
[identity profile] ffutures.livejournal.com
Story: Tea on Mount Ida
Author: Silverr
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2977
Author's Summary: Silurians live for centuries, humans not nearly so long. Vastra knows that she will lose Jenny someday, and it's a loss she's already bracing herself against. Written for the Rare Women Fanfic Exchange 2012.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm a great fan of the Eleventh Doctor's best non-companions, Madame Vastra and Jenny. She's a Silurian, she's her human servant / lover, together they fight... all sorts of things. Unfortunately there aren't many stories about them on Calufrax, this is in my opinion the best, in which Madame Vastra reflects on her life with Jenny, shows some of the concerns we usually only see with the Doctor and his companions, and with the Doctor's help they make life a little better for a historical figure.

Story: Porn 3.0
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1712
Author's Summary: The Doctor helps himself and Donna gets something out of it. As it were. (Doctor/Donna.)
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Donna
Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: After a week of reccing some fairly heavy, introspective/emotional stuff, I thought I'd close with something light and fun.

While I sometimes find PWPs enjoyable even if I don't really buy into the pairing, after a while -- no matter how well-written -- they can tend to all sort of blur together for me. Which is why I love this little thing. It may or may not have been meant as crack, but to me it's a hilarious and brilliantly blunt satire. I'll never look at that sort of story the same way again.

Story: Noodley Appendage
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2751
Author's Summary: When Captain Jack Harkness gets someone a special surprise for their birthday, it will almost certainly wind up involving sex with tentacled aliens. Because, Jack. (Part of the Rabbit Hole AU.)
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto/Lisa/OC
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: Really, the only thing better than Jack/Ianto/Lisa is Jack/Ianto/Lisa/tentacled alien. And, as well done PWP tends to do, it manages not to be strictly porn, giving some insights into how the main triad have grown together. While it is part of her Rabbit Hole AU, it reads fine alone, I think, as the dynamics of the established triad are stated or implied pretty thoroughly at the beginning.

Story: Blocking Your Own Shot
Author: Arnica
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 84,540
Author's Summary: Eighteen days into his suspension, Ianto tries to start putting things back together by tearing them all down first.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Ianto/OC, Jack/Ianto/OC
Warnings: Explicit sex, language

Recced because: There are at least dozens if not hundreds of “What Ianto did during his post-Cyberwoman suspension” fics out there. This is one of the best I've read. It delves into just how seriously messed up Ianto is, and more than that, what it takes to piece him back together. The OC, Cheyenne, is gritty and flawed and mirrors many of Ianto's dysfunctions through a different lens in really interesting ways. It's not, however, a strictly character piece (though I would call it highly character-driven), and while parts are extremely steamy, it's not PWP. It's also got a solid action/adventure plot that sort of sneaks up on the reader, as it sneaks up on Ianto.

Story: The Doctor Still Dances
Author: teacupnosaucer
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1203
Author's Summary: Amy and Rory play dress-up. So, coincidentally, does the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond/ Rory Williams/ Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I didn't set out to make this threesome week, it just happened that way! As it is, the Doctor Still Dances manages to capture just about everything I love in the interaction between Amy, Rory and the Doctor. Amy is playful and doesn't take things too seriously; Rory is a bit reluctant but is willing to try for Amy; and the Doctor is willing to put aside his demons for a moment (but just for a moment) for his companions. And just like in the best episodes of this trio, there's also the slightly uncomfortable undercurrent, the things we, the audience know, that Amy and Rory don't - this fic manages to be touching and fun at the same time.

Story: help me, hypervodkas, you're my only hope
Author: coffeesuperhero
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3305
Author's Summary: Jack Harkness met Amy and Rory long before he met the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Amy/Rory
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story apparently stemmed from a throwaway line early in the series about Jack Harkness sleeping with his executioners. How the author got from that to the idea that Amy and Rory somehow happened to be said executioners, I've no idea. But I don't really mind at all; it gets us the fun sexy hilarity and craziness that is this fic. Even amidst the silliness, I love the dialogue and characterization too.
