Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor
Warnings: Disturbing imagery.

To me, the episode 'Heaven Sent' is a perfect picture of horror, and this story absolutely nails that same horror. Just as in the episode, I read this fic wanting to protect the Doctor from everything, and you have to be damn good to make me feel that. It is chilling and painful, and beautiful in the darkest way. This story serves as a reminder of how brave and incredible the Doctor truly is.

Story: Welcome to the House!
Author: Masterpwn
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 31896
Author's Summary: Multiple people who have never met each other are selected by a secret organization for unknown reasons and forced to survive in the most terrible place they have ever been in full of traps and monsters. It will take their best to stay alive and find out the truth, but the house will try everything to kill them. Is escape even possible? Will anyone even survive this? 10 go in, 1 comes out... Or so they say.
Characters/Pairing: Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, River Song, Martha Jones, Rory Williams, the 9th Doctor, the 10th Doctor, the 11th Doctor
Warnings: Explicit violence, swearing, several major character deaths

As I've said before, I love a good AU, and this story fits the bill. Perhaps my favorite thing about it though is that we get a whole mess of characters who never got a chance to interact in canon working together towards a common goal. This story is full of surprises, twists, and turns-I never knew what to expect next, which is part of why I loved it so much. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Story: 45 for a Moment
Author: EllyF
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 645
Author's Summary: We move on, even when we don't want to.
Characters/Pairing:Eleventh Doctor, Donna Noble, Shaun Temple
Warnings: None

The Doctor doesn't deal with loss easily. We saw that in the aftermath of Doomsday, and again after Journey's End. By all accounts, you could say Ten went a bit off the rails after he lost Donna, and while it's never really talked about in explicit detail in canon, I imagine that what happened to her would be the sort of thing to haunt him, and that he would need to reassure himself that she's okay. This short little ficlet explores that idea, as Eleven sneaks a peek at Donna and her family on her 45th birthday. Hold on to your feels!

Story: the sacrament of penance
Author: lyricalprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1442
Author's Summary: (Broadchurch crossover). Hardy is not officially a missing person. Yet.
Characters/Pairing: Alec Hardy (Ten) & Ellie Miller
Warnings: Swearing

It's a pity there's only a handful of DW/BC crossovers on the Teaspoon, and this is just one of several that combines the best of both worlds-Hardy is really a chameleon arched Ten. For such a short fic, it's very evocative, giving us snapshots of both Ellie and Ten/Hardy's thoughts and dreams (of Rose and of beaches). It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger-I'm hoping eventually the author will write more. If you like Broadchurch, this is a must read.

Story: A Ghost Story
Author: Kelkat9
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 76054
Author's Summary: Stressed-out post grad maths and computer science student Rose Tyler moves into a house with a reputation for being haunted. She scoffs at the things at first as she has her own issues with her personal life and school. Soon, she can’t ignore or logically explain what’s happening. Her inner scientist is intrigued and she starts to investigate. The more she investigates, the more things happen and she becomes obsessed with solving the mystery of the house and the disappearance of one Dr. James McCrimmon who vanished mysteriously in 1968.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, other DW characters
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing

I've recced Kelkat9's stuff before, and I'll probably do it again, because I love a good Ten/Rose AU, and no one writes them finer than she. This story is exactly what it says on the tin-a ghost story/haunted house story, and it's deliciously creepy. I don't recommend reading at night, unless you want to make yourself jumpy and uneasy. This is more than just a ghost story, though, it's a mystery and a love story, too, and all the various plots weave together beautifully. Trust me, you want to find out what happened to Dr. James McCrimmon. Even though I know how it ends, I've reread this story 3 or 4 times because it's just so perfect.

Title: Any Colour You Like

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2744
Author's Summary: The Master's curious about his future wife.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado), Lucy Saxon
Warnings: references to self-harm and suicide ideation.

Recc'ed Because: This story is a paradox, but it works nevertheless. The Master invites Lucy Saxon into his TARDIS and she accepts. The Master is curious and a bit uncomfortable, unfailingly polite and perhaps he do things to Lucy’s mind she doesn’t remember after. He may do it to be kind. And Lucy is damaged, which anyone who has survived the Master probably has to be, but she is also not afraid anymore. The chemistry between them too are very interesting and it is a story which can be read several times. It also beautifully and poetically written.

Author: annariel
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1869
Author's Summary: River Song chances upon the First Doctor at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, River Song
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I have a special fondness for stories where River meets past regenerations. I am sure she would see the Doctor out. This story is so charming and the Doctor gets charmed too, while still being much himself. And River is her usual flirty self, ready for some adventure. Then throw in a Armelian Neutron Manipulator in the mix… It’s good fun, but with a touch of sadness too, as is fitting in a story with River Song.

Recc'ed Because: Oh, I'm a sucker for the twisted Doctor/Master relationship in any incarnation. And this one reminds us that despite her regeneration, the Master is still the Master, still showing the Doctor just how much she loves him by how much she can hurt him. I like how this piece also shows a damaged but still recognizable Doctor, who just might want to be broken--but only by her.

So I was checking the tags earlier this week and noticed that I would reach my 100th rec this stint. And then I realized today (January 20th) is the eighth anniversary of the very first rec on calufrax! Title: The Maze
Author: Rangersyl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 977
Author's Summary: The TARDIS sang of joy and sorrow in that ever-present hum that only her bonded soul could hear. He wasn't listening.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: This one is a change of pace from the light-hearted ones I've recc-ed most of this week. On the forefront it's the story of the Doctor and the TARDIS coping with Donna's loss, and moving on. It's bittersweet and sad and hopeful with just a touch of melodrama, as we have come to expect with the series and especially Ten's run. But I especially like it because it's really a microcosm of the heart of the entire series, that endures and repeats with different faces, different names up to the present, even though the story itself is post-Journey's End and was posted not much later than the start of our recs experiment here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax. I'm surprised no one's pointed it out here before. It reminds me of everything I love about the show--the alien madman and the blue box, and the human connections that keep them both grounded and running.

Recc'ed Because: Because of course Missy would decide to go back to her old stomping grounds in an attempt to overpower and entrance the Doctor's old companions. And it goes about as well as you'd expect. This short little story has perfect character voices and is equal parts sexy and hilarious and yes, because it's Missy, also a tiny bit chilling.

Here's a good long adventure for the weekend :)

Title: The Empath Cell
Author: Megaceryle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 53007
Author's Summary:Something is wrong in Leadworth: Amy remembers a trip that never happened, and a local man has won the lottery and aged forty years instantly. The Doctor's search for answers leads him across the universe to an ancient civilization of empaths, who may be harboring a secret about a Time Lord who came before.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory, OCs
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I always love a good sprawling adventure, and this one is intriguing. It takes a while to build, and doesn't end up where you would expect. It explores the link between the Doctor and the TARDIS and the consequences of meddling with their shared psyche. It doesn't rely on particularly flowery language or style to tell the story, rather its understated prose lets the characters, plot, and world-building take its time and speak for itself. It introduces a range of cool new characters that are all three dimensional and not necessarily what they seem to be at first, that I want to know more about what happens to them after the ending credits. The range of new characters that are given enough room to flesh out beyond what you would expect, along with the mystery, danger and intrigue make this story read like a classic Eighth Doctor Adventure novel, and though the author's Eleven is mad and clever as ever, I can definitely see echoes of Eight in him as well.

Title: Rescue Mission
Author: Liz Rambler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4265
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor is on his farewell tour and decides to take care of a few loose ends while he's at it. First on his list: Check on Peri.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Peri Brown, King Yrcanos
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for Peri. I met her mostly through the Big Finish audio adventures with both Five and Six, and when I finally got around to watching Mindwarp I was... well, less than impressed on the send-off she got on the show. This story takes the improbable "happy ending" that Peri got and treats it exactly as it should be treated... as a rescue mission. Not only that, it's Eleven's rescue mission, and I also have a huge soft spot for Eleven. This story is a snappy, quick-talking adventure, equal parts forthright and funny, with just enough of a hint of real danger and more complex emotions underlying everything to keep it away from pure farce or crackfic. The dialogue and character voices are fantastic and lucky for us Eleven and Peri fans, it seems it may be the beginning of a series. So I say, go read it and encourage this lovely new Teaspoon author :)

Title: The Patient
Author: Pab
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3884
Author's Summary:An old man with white hair claims he's a time traveller called the Doctor and that Earth is being invaded by alien lizards. Naturally, they lock him up in a psychiatric hospital. Then his granddaughter appears. She quite approves of his incarceration and advises he should never be released.
Characters/Pairings: Other character(s). (recc-er says: Variations on a theme)
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: Because it's the origin story of the origin story? Well, the world may never know for sure. What it does have is a bright storytelling style, a very cheeky sense of humor with a lot of nods and winks to the origins of the Unearthly Child, and a few twists for fun.

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,113
Author's Summary: It seems like an eternity to her before he spins on his heel and walks away, leaving her alone on her side of the glass. She will soon discover that in reality, eternity is so much longer.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Daughter of Mine

Recced because: No matter whether you feel the Tenth Doctor's punishment of the Family of Blood was justified, you'll want to read this unusual story about Daughter of Mine's life in the mirror: her bitterness, her resentment, her stubbornness, and ultimately – in a way – her redemption. Daughter of Mine's anger boils off the page, but as I said in the comment I left when the story was posted, it's a dark tale, but a sympathetic one as well. It's also a very worthy debut for this author on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax.

Thank goodness it occurred to Pendragon, though, or we wouldn't have this lovely story in which Ian and Wilf immediately bond and form a lasting friendship. The character voices are spot-on, and honestly, re-reading the story just now so I could write the rec still fills me with joy, even if there are occasional sad moments, just as there are in anyone's life. But those moments are that much easier to deal with when you have a friend who understands you – and fortunately, Ian and Wilf do.

Story: A Tale of Two Osgoods
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 459
Author's Summary: Schrodinger’s Girl. Entangled at the quantum level. She’s Osgood, and she’s Osgood, and this is their story. (Spoilers for The Zygon Inversion)
Characters/Pairings: Osgood

Recced because: I was not exactly a fan of S9's Zygon two-parter, but one thing I did like about those episodes was the expansion of Osgood's character, particularly her steadfast refusal to identify whether she was human or Zygon, because it simply didn't matter. TheBigCat takes this one step further with a look into the Osgoods' internal dialogue: they finish one another's sentences, feel one another's pain, and understand each other on a level no one else does. It's a sweet, compact story that packs a lot of insight into a small number of words.

Story: The Boy in the Barn
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,647
Author's Summary: Backstory. (Spoilers for Hell-Bent and Planet of the Spiders)
Characters/Pairings: One

Recced because: It's New Year's Day, at least in my time zone, so let's take things back to the beginning, shall we? In fact, let's take things all the way back to the point where the Doctor is still a little boy, and his problematic parentage renders him less than suitable to be raised in Gallifreyan high society. But this isn't to say that there aren't people who care for him, who do their best to set him on the right path – and who teach him he can be loved, and respected, and most of all, worthy. It's a bittersweet but ultimately hopeful story, and one of my favorites of the past year. I hope it becomes one of yours, too.

Story: Vacuum
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,082
Author's Summary: Something is missing in Zoe’s mind.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe

Recced because: I love Zoe, but the ending she got onscreen is terribly upsetting. Here, Inkfire takes the first steps towards rectifying that: even if Zoe has lost all her memories of traveling with the Doctor – and all her character growth to boot – she knows something has been lost, and wants to try to recover it. "Vacuum" is a brief and meditative character study with a genuine feel for how unsettled Zoe must have felt after "The War Games," and if you're a Zoe fan, I think you'll appreciate that this story ends on such a hopeful note.
