Story: Fondness
Author: LizBee
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 738
Characters/pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana I
Author's summary: "I am rather fond of you," the Doctor said, in an unexpected fit of post-coital affection.
Warnings: none

Recced because: I don't even ship Four/Romana, but this fic was so funny I was willing to go with it. The Doctor and Romana's pillow talk in this is hilariously droll and full of witty jabs at both Time Lord society and their own relationship, and perfectly in character. I could hear both their voices clearly in this dialogue, which is no small feat considering how the banter between Four and Romana I was some of the best of any Doctor & companion team, IMO. It was lovely to hear the flavor of that recreated here. A delightful (if mildly NSFW) read.

Story: Beyond the Veil
Author: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1827
Author’s Summary: The Tenth Doctor discovers that his song isn't ending: it's just leaving to join in a greater melody, above and beyond death itself. Oneshot of various pairings and much joy.
Characters/Pairing: 1st Doctor and Susan Foreman, 2nd Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon, 3rd Doctor and Jo Grant, 4th Doctor and Romana, 5th Doctor and Vislor Turlough, 6th Doctor and Peri Brown, 7th Doctor and Ace McShane, 8th Doctor and Grace Holloway, 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler, 10th Doctor and Donna Noble, 11th Doctor and River Song, 12th Doctor and Michael, 13th Doctor and Inez
Warnings: Just for feels, folks.

Recced because: An interesting look at Time Lord afterlife. What happens to the Doctor we know and love when he regenerates? AceOnGallifrey posits the lovely theory of Timeheart and what it’s like, and if you’re not trickling a tear or two by the time you’re done reading it, then I’d be surprised.

No, of course I haven't forgotten that I'm reccing here these two weeks - I'm just spreading them out a bit. Yes, that's right. Spreading them out. Clearly. Anyway, without further ado:

Story: Blood From A Very Tall Stone
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,416
Author's Summary: So, like, Romana and Duggan clearly liked each other in 'City Of Death'. This is the post-ep fic about how the Doctor was like really jealous or something. Can the epic timelove be saved? Will K-9 survive? What happens to the cups of tea that vanish early on in the story?
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None that I can think of

Recced because: Well, as may have become embarrassingly clear based on some of my earlier reccing spells, I'm more than a bit partial to a bit of Four/Romana, especially Four/Romana II, and even more especially when it evokes the spirit of those gloriously silly Season 17 stories as well as this does.

File this one under the by now bulging dossier of fics I can't believe hadn't already been recced on the comm. I mean, it's a really good fic by a well-known member of the LJ Whofic community and it seems like years since I first read it (five years in fact, from the timestamp on the review I left over on Teaspoon), so it would seem to be a shoe-in for having already been brought up here. In fact I was fairly sure it had been, but it turns out not.

The idea of a Romana/Duggan "thing" during City of Death, and of imagining the Doctor's reaction afterwards seems by now to be a well-worn path for Four-ficcers to take, although it's always interesting to see the different takes on it. For my money, this is one of the very best versions out there, and what really makes it work is the dialogue. Sparkling, I believe is the word for it. Every other line is a zinger. Those wonderfully absurdist word-games that the Doctor and Romana managed to veer into at the most unlikely moments, rendered here with incredible fidelity to the original source material. It's a bit of a cliché to observe when praising dialogue in fanfic that you can hear the original actors saying the words, but I really can when I read this. And as I know from bitter experience, unless you're a genuine comedic genius like Douglas Adams (and who of us is?) writing that stuff even reasonably well is hard. So hats off, really, to anybody who can do it as seamlessly as in this fic.

So yes, if Four/Romana is your thing, then this is the real deal. 24 carat stuff. Go and check it out and leave a word or two of appreciation.

Although the comm's on break at the moment -- we'll be back on July 8! -- I might post a rec or two in the meantime, if only to test our new LJ -> Feedly -> Tumblr automated posting system. (Bless you, IFTTT.)

Story: Let's Do It
Author: Charamei
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 879
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Romana try to make sense of this 'romance' thing.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: I am sure some of you out there don't ship Four/Romana II, but for those of us who do ship these particular Time Lords, "Let's Do It" is a sweetly funny and frankly adorable look at how two highly logical aliens might explore traditional human mating rituals. Naturally, it involves relying on a book, albeit one called Great Romantic Tropes of Our Time, so holding hands, watching each other sleep, and getting caught in the rain all get their scientific due, as Four and Romana attempt to determine exactly how and why these mysterious rituals have any appeal at all.

What does work ... well, that would spoil the story, so I suggest reading it instead.

Story: Hand in Hand for Eternity
Author: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: The Time Lords want Romana back. Romana wants to keep on running. The Doctor? Well, he knows what he has to do.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None, well not unless you're philosophically opposed to "fix it" fic, I guess.

Recced because: Well, I guess it's no secret by now to those of you with even a passing familiarity with my fannish activities that I'm a big, fat sucker for the whole notion of Four/Romana (and Doctor(s)/Romana(s) in general). This fic isn't quite flat-out Four/Romana II, but it's arguable that it's strongly hinting at that. But let's face it, one of the big strengths of Four and Romana as a partnership, especially during S17 once they've got that whole Key to Time thing out of the way, is that it doesn't really matter whether you're invested in the idea of the "/" between them. They're just best friends forever, careening slightly manically around time and space on their holidays, holding hands, comedy double-acting at each other and any supporting character they run into, being extremely silly and somewhat cool and most importantly having enormous fun while they're at it. It's like Ten and Rose during S2 of NuWho but not annoying.  I kid!

But then comes S18 and, while there's still a fair bit of the above to be had, things also suddenly get very real. They both know they're on borrowed time together, that their "thing" isn't going to last much longer. It only lasts as long as it does, in fact, because of a freak navigational accident that strands them temporarily in another universe (and you have to suspect that once they're in E-Space, Romana knows in her hearts of hearts that she won't be accompanying the Doctor on the journey back).

And this fic considers the scene that it all turns on; that scene in Full Circle where Romana gets the summons back to Gallifrey and the Doctor...the Doctor shows every sign of just going along with it. "You can't fight Time Lords." He should know. He tried, and look how it turned out for him in the end. Four's reaction is as understandable in that light as his decision to cut Sarah Jane loose before answering that earlier summons, but the quiet tragedy of what I've heard described as Four and Romana's "break up" is there if, like me, you're a fan of the pair of them. And this fic nicely examines that scene, describing the thoughts and emotions that we can only guess from the performances on the television screen. And then it turns it on its head, and yes, you could describe it as a "fix it" were it not for the real sense you get that, the positive note the fic ends upon aside, the Doctor's decision here may or may not end well for either him or Romana - it's a terrible risk they're both taking. And yet, sometimes it is better to fight and lose than not to fight. Or even run. And the ending makes me go sort of "Awww", and that's worth a rec in itself. :)

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, happy sixth night of Hanukkah to those who celebrate it, and happy Doctor Who Christmas Special Day to us all! As my last rec, I bring you some holiday fluff:

Story: Christmas in the TARDIS
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 639
Author's Summary: A very merry Christmas for Romana and the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll be honest with you. I'm generally not a fan of "characters celebrate Christmas" fic, but this is such a perfect piece of sweet, non-sappy, in-character Doctor/Romana fluff, it completely won me over. If you love Christmas fic, you're bound to love this; and if you don't, try it anyway, because it just might win you over, too.

Well, that week went quickly, didn't it? It's been a lot of fun, and I hope people have enjoyed the recs I've posted so far. Just one more to go...

Story:
Nothing gold can stay
Author:
[livejournal.com profile] clocketpatch
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 16,535
Author's Summary: In which Romana saves the Doctor's butt, the universe, and some newt people.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (4th)/Romana II, K9
Warnings: Although there's nothing explicit, the story does involve possession and the Doctor acting very strangely; it hints at some pretty dark stuff, including violence, but without going into the details

Recced because: Here's another story that I've been meaning to rec either on Calufrax or elsewhere for at least three years now, but somehow never got around to it, because I'm bad like that. I have put in a good word for it here and there, though, in LJ conversations and elsewhere as and when the opportunity arose, because I really do think as many people as possible should read this one, and hopefully enjoy it as much as I have. I'll be honest, [livejournal.com profile] clocketpatch has become a pretty firm internet acquaintance of mine over the past couple of years, but I'm not exaggerating or gilding the lily even a little bit when I say she's one of the best writers I've come across online and that I wish her busy real life gave her more time to write, because the world needs more writing of this quality.

Very nice prose stylings, interesting use of words and vivid descriptive passages are the things I most associate with [livejournal.com profile] clocketpatch's writing, and this story is no exception. Another thing which endears it to me is the fact that it's about Four, Romana and K9, with more than a hint of Four/Romana about it; I can't get enough of that sort of stuff, as anybody who has had any fanfic-related dealings with me probably knows. Here, though, what is often thought of as a quite light, fluffy Team TARDIS find themselves involved in some quite grim, dark stuff indeed. I don't want to give more away than I did in the warnings section above, but it's interesting to see these characters in that sort of setting, and strangely it's extremely effective. Another thing this author does very well is to ground her stories very much in the often harsh reality of life, but without going overboard with grimness for grimness's sake. It's a fine line to tread, but she does it very well.

It's not all darkness, though - the portrayal of Four and Romana and their unique star-crossed relationship, and the whimsy of it, is very nice indeed. It makes me smile, and kind of "get something in my eye" at points, especially in the epilogue which provides a perfectly bittersweet ending to the whole tale. Another thing well worth mentioning is the world-building in this story; the author's aliens are very alien while remaining understandable to the reader, a hard thing to achieve.

Lastly, I cannot overstate the big impression this story made on me the first time I read it and how it consciously or unconsciously influenced my own later fic about Four and Romana and indeed the way I see their characters nowadays. Go and read it!

Four Reflects )

And it occurs to me, somewhat shockingly, that I've managed to go a whole week without reccing any Seven fics... I suppose I'll just have to do better next time. :)

Title: Hearts and Flowers

Rating: All Audiences
Word count: 1,014
Author's summary: "Love triangles can be a terrible thing, especially when one of the corners is a tin dog."
Characters: Doctor 4, Romana, K9
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's adorable and we needed a Valentine's Day story! I'd tell you more but I can't beat the author's own summary. Ahhhh, poor, wretched K9...

The Doctor looked at her in puzzlement as she frowned at the card in her hand. It had two large pink hearts on the front and a verse inside, which she proceeded to read aloud:

““Mars is red, police boxes are blue, the Eye of Orion is quite lovely at this time of the aeon, and so are you…”?” She looked up, frowning even more intensely: “Well, I can’t say I think much of the poetry.”

Story: In the Moment
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6,924
Author's Summary: He has been lying about his age for so long now that it is hard to remember exactly how old he is, but however many years it is, he is feeling every one of them today.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II, K-9
Warnings: None

Recced because: The author calls this "shameless Four/Romana" love, but personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. "In the Moment" is charming, with spot-on, sparkling dialogue between Four and Romana II as they spend a lazy day picking out clothes and relaxing in a park. There's also unexpected emotional depth here – the Doctor's reminiscences of his early life on Gallifrey and what drove him to leave, and the two Time Lords' acknowledgement that they're running away together not just out of love, but out of fear of the future. If you're a Four/Romana II fan, I can't recommend this story highly enough.

Recced because: Because it's so very, very hot. No, really; it's one-step-removed smut, in that no actual sex happens and yet it's most definitely highly erotic. And intense. And intimate. Actually, maybe I shouldn't have posted this on a hot summer's day?

Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I've read this fic several times and it never fails to make me smile. It's a good-natured take on the half-a-millenia age-difference between the Doctor and Romana. The Doctor's flustering, the discussion about ''underage'' partners and Romana's ability to turn the tables on the Doctor are a delight. Plus, there's a nice bit of smut at the end.

Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II.

Story: Gaze into the Abyss
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 22, 811
Author's summary: She wanted to make a difference; she wanted to do good. She wanted to be able to say that she had done something more with her life than simply watching. Most of all, she wanted to be like him, to please him. Events dictated otherwise.
Characters/Pairings: Various Doctors/Romana II, Leela/Andred, Davros, K9, Fourth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Jacobi!Master, Daleks, and various assorted Time Lords
Warnings: Sad and long. Bring tissues. Also, explicit violence (but then it is a war story.)

Recced because: Tonight you get two Calufrax recs from me! I've already recced the short one; this is the long one. Believe me, it's worth every sentence.

Gazing Into the Abyss is, without a doubt, my favorite Time War fic. It's written from the perspective of Romana and through her JPOR does an excellent job of showing the horrors of war. We begin with Romana in all her youth and idealism, wanting to do good and finding the role of President as the perfect way to accomplish this and we end at the end of Gallifrey herself, the final hour. It's sad and heartbreaking, but the writing is beautiful and there were moments reading this where I forgot that it isn't actually canon. I cannot recommend this one more.

Word count: 1536
Author's Summary: Why did the Doctor take Romana on a punt boat ride in 'Shada'?
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II, Four/Romana II
Warnings: Shameless romanace and fluff. Also, it's has song-lyrics. And implied sex.

Recced because: A gorgeous, sweet, touching take on why the Doctor and Romana went punting in 'Shada'. The author manages to keep them both perfectly in character while romancing each other, leaving no doubt about how in love they are, somehow without being maudlin. There's also a touch of Time Lord Otherness with the multiple tenses. If songfics put you off, well, keep reading anyway, because the lyrics are perfectly placed. To the point: so beautiful it almost hurts, with a vague hint of melancholy. Read!

Story: At Last
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1278
Author's Summary: "Oh, was I supposed to seduce you? Really, Romana, you must write these things in the diary."
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana
Warnings: None

Recced because: well-written Four dialogue is a precious thing, and Doyle absolutely nails his capacity to be pompous, distracted and entirely self-obsessed, even when he's supposed to be flirting. You can practically see the Eiffel Tower in the background, this feels so much like a missing scene from City of Death - although apparently they've had time for an adventure in between with the chinless Prince Arfargle...

Story: Love Of His Life
Author: Carmen Sandiego
Rating: Unrated
Author's summary: The Doctor loves - foolishly, unconditionally, brilliantly - through all his lives.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor/Jamie, Third Doctor/Jo, Theta/Koschei(/Ushas), Fourth Doctor/Romana, Eighth Doctor/Romana, First Doctor/Barbara (unrequited), Barbara/Ian, First Doctor/Cameca, Tenth Doctor/Reinette, Susan, the Brigadier, Martha and numerous other companions mentioned. Also, from the deity corner, Pain, Death, and Time.
Warnings: Should I warn for Gallifreyan mythology?

Recced because: If someone is a thousand years old or more (or even if they're the nine-hundred years they claim to be), it's very silly to presume that they've only loved once in their life. This fic expresses that concept beautifully. It's wonderfully written, with lyrical prose and a firm grasp of canon. The incorporation of Pain, Death, and Time--the three Gallifreyan goddesses--lends a perfect note of unease. I almost didn't rec this, because hasn't everyone read something by Carmen Sandiego? But this fic just gets it so very right that I couldn't help myself. If you haven't read this already, please do. (It's not really as long as the pairing list makes it sound like. It's actually just under three thousand words.)

I'd also like to say that it's been a distinct pleasure to rec to everyone this past week. Due to the generosity of our mods, who let me sign up for another week, I'll be back at the end of April. Quite frankly, I can't wait!
