This is it from me! Thanks for putting up with me, and I hope you found something worth reading that you hadn't seen before.

Story: Martha Jones, Angel of Death!
Author: calapine
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 2,083
Author's Summary: How not to kill the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones/The Doctor (10th), the Black Guardian
Warnings: none

Recced because: For my last rec, I was going to pick something really deep and meaningful. The I realized I'd rather just rec something really really silly. So this is it! The premise is essentially that after Adeola (from Army of Ghosts) died, she was recruited by the Black Guardian and brought back to life as Martha Jones in order to kill the Doctor. It basically just gets more excellent and ridiculous from there.

Here's the first of this week's several multi-era stories:

Story: Evolution
Author: Concordiaadieu/[livejournal.com profile] catholicphoton
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30094
Author's Summary: Set Post-JE. Martha goes missing, and panic ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th), Torchwood, UNIT

Recced because: It's a rolicking good adventure romp with a creative use of Martha's backstory and a Classic Who enemy who not many fic authors have bothered to bring into New Who stories.

“Doctor, what is that? Can it find Martha?”

“It detects disturbances to the fabric of space-time, so hopefully yes.”

Jack cleared his throat. “I’ve got one of those too, only mine’s sleek and sexy.”

“Jack, stop it. Now assuming that the disturbance you detected earlier with your sleek, sexy and, by the way vastly inferior, detector thingy is connected to Martha’s disappearance, and in all honestly signs point to yes, then with this massively superior detector thingy not only can I detect it, but I may be able to trace where it came from and where it went. The when may be a little trickier.”

Jack shrugged and grabbed Gwen’s hand as the Doctor took off at a run toward the disturbance. Jack snorted. “He could have just asked where we got the reading, but no, he likes run.“

Gwen grinned at him. “You’re one to talk.”

Story: Shock Treatment
Author: fourzoas
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1692
Author's Summary: Regeneration is a private affair.
Characters: Nine, Ten, Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: Martha Jones stumbles across a newly regenerated Ninth Doctor while stranded in 1969. This fic doesn't pull its punches in either the trauma or the resolution; it's a quick, dark little tale, the kind that you are glad to have read, but sad to have experienced, in a way. Very well done.

Oops I missed yesterday. Here is one to make up for it

Story: Impossible Things
Author: Casira
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1848
Author's Summary: After the events of "Family of Blood", the Doctor dreams of lives, loves, and what he most needs.
Characters: Ten, Martha
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: John Smith is no more, but the Doctor still has his dreams. It is angsty and heartbreaking like a lot of Tenth Doctor stories, but it doesn't sacrifice characterization to do it and it's not afraid to explore the side of the Doctor (especially Ten) that holds on to his companions more than a bit selfishly. It is also beautifully written and I love the metaphor of human hearts still trying to live in pairs.

It's my last rec of the week! Thanks for having me - I hope you enjoyed the fic.

Story: Miniature Disasters
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4456
Author's Summary: A heartwarming tale of marriages and a baby.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones/The Doctor (10th), Romana II/The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This story is one of those that just brings it all together. New Who, Classic Series, nods to the Gallifrey canon. Three different timelines all running in the same space. It's funny and interesting and clever, and it's one of the fics that got me started writing my own fanfiction. Miniature Disasters is just really, really good.

Story:Mr & Mrs Smith (Go to Lyrae)
Author: Significant Owl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count:4875
Author's Summary:"Yep, expect a perfect evening, I said that, I remember."
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Martha
Warnings: N/A
Recced because: Signficant Owl writes some of the best Ten/Martha I've come across - her Martha is the strong, funny, smart Martha who kicked ass in 'Smith and Jones', who Ten evidently fancied the pants off of, and who I wanted to see more of throughout Season 3. Mr & Mrs Smith (Go to Lyrae) was apparently written for the cliche challenge of characters pretending to be a couple, and it reminds me of nothing quite so much as classic screwball comedy. It's got brilliant rapid-fire dialogue, it's funny, it's sexy, there's moments of spot-on insight, and a misdirect that genuinely made me grin. Practically perfect in every way.

Story: A Long Night Is Full of Dreams
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2769
Author's Summary: Five days -- and six nights -- in the life of Martha Jones.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/various

Recced because: This is a marvellous character-study of Martha. Though written before "Reset", and thus no longer canon-compliant, the writing (of all the characters, not just Martha) feels true. Martha's relationships are explored in a series of frankly erotic dreams, while her waking days are spent piecing together her life in the wake of the Doctor and the Year That Never Was. A worthy tribute to a complex character.
[identity profile] radiantbaby.livejournal.com
Story: All's Fair
Author: Lurky McLurklurk/[livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2521
Author's Summary: Martha and the Doctor, years down the line. Things are more complicated than they once were, but that's not a bad thing.
Characters/Pairings: Tom/Martha, Ten/Martha
Warnings: Sex

Recced because: Being a polyamorous woman myself, I must admit up front that I love (and have a bit of a bias for) reading about mature open relationships between consenting adult characters. Sadly, that's often not the norm in many portrayals of relationships in fic, but in this wonderful story by [livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere*, it is definitely a case of Responsible Nonmonogamy done right. In many ways this story is about Ten and Martha, as they are somewhat the focus of the narrative, but to me, at the heart of the story, is the relationship between Tom and Martha (which is why I listed their pairing first). [livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere shows us the beautiful trust of the foundation/primary relationship of Tom/Martha, through the scope of a very sweet and fluffy date she has with the Ten. She quite adeptly and skillfully entwines both romantic relationships in Martha's life without giving too much favor to either, but showing instead how they organically feed off one another. As a bonus, there's some lovely smut thrown in, but I love the sweetness of the deep love and trust most of all. And perhaps Humphrey, the cuddly toy -- I love him lots as well.

[*Yes, she was just recced yesterday, but I had this all typed up and ready to go, so I went ahead and posted it today. I can't help that she just rocks!]

[identity profile] radiantbaby.livejournal.com
Hello everyone, my name is [livejournal.com profile] radiantbaby and I will be reccing this week here on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who since I began watching it in the 80s on the local/Georgia PBS station, but it honestly wasn't until S3 of New Who that I really got heavily into fandom.

This week I will be reccing a mixed bag of primarily New Who-oriented fics that are mostly shippy in nature, but also some gen fic as well.

This is my first time reccing here, so I am both nervous and excited for this opportunity. I hope you will enjoy these stories as much as I do!

Story: A Planet Near Arcturus
Author: nostalgia/[livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1060
Author's Summary: He's not keeping this one. Really. No, honest. (Ten/Martha)
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Martha
Warnings: Sex, Swearing

Recced because: This short ficlet was one of the first fanfics I read when I immersed myself in fandom and, honestly, it is probably the one that made the biggest impression on me and my ideas about the Ten/Martha relationship. I think this fic is an excellent portrait of the dysfunctional nature of this pairing and how much the Doctor holds back, even when -- in my opinion -- he doesn't want to. I love the way [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj renders the Doctor's inner monologue and self-effacing introspection. This Doctor is a bit broken and he knows it, but as he says in the beginning: the universe "owes him something fun and uncomplicated that doesn't end in tears".

Story: Step In, Step Out, Walk Around
Author: amberite
Rating: It's listed as "all ages," but there's some profanity and the subject matter is… well, I don't know what you'd call it. That's what makes the fic. Anyway, if screening this for younguns, I'd call it a "teen," personally.
Word Count: 439
Author's Summary: Repeat anything enough times with meaning, and it becomes an obsession, even a fetish.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha (Ten/Martha?)
Warnings: As for rating.

Recced because: Martha plays a game with the Doctor and gradually realizes that she doesn't know quite what the game's about. Then she, like us, perhaps begins to get an inkling, and the whole thing gets much worse.

I don't know that I'd call this dark!fic, exactly, though there's a dark current to it. But "dark" also seems too simplistic a label for what turns out to be a condensed character piece for the Doctor, Martha, and—just possibly?—Who fans and our fascination. A creepy and yet still sort of touching look at what living so long and knowing so many might have done to the Doctor's head. This fic's so short that it's hard to say much without spoiling something, so I'll just push off and give you the excerpt.

Story: sometimes bodies
Author: Significant Owl
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1520
Author's Summary: She couldn't see the bottom.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Martha
Warnings: Sex, but not extremely graphic.

Recced because: It was hard to choose just one of Significant Owl's stories to rec; she has a wonderfully lyrical but economical way with words, and excellent characterization. This is set immediately after "42," one of my favorite stories for the Doctor and Martha's dynamic. It follows up on the moments of vulnerability in that episode, and has some really lovely imagery.

Story: Do You Remember The First Time?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere / Lurky McLurklurk
Wordcount: 2767
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary: Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th)

Recced because: Nothing is ever straight forward with a Timelord, including his sex life - as [livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere proves in this rather steamy tale! Timey-wimey takes on a whole new meaning when Martha sleeps with the Doctor for the first time.
nonelvis: (DW animated smith and jones)

Story: Teacher's Pet
Author: Lurky McLurklurk/[livejournal.com profile] ionlylurkhere
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4,202
Author's Summary: Ten/Martha. Teacher/student.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Martha
Warnings: BDSM, explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: I've been dying to rec this story ever since it first appeared on [livejournal.com profile] sizeofthatthing. Teacher/student: a classic kink easy to explore as a 1969 fic in which the Doctor, needing access to school equipment to build his timey-wimey detector, takes a job as a biology teacher. (At Coal Hill School, naturally.) While he works on his lesson plan for basic human reproduction, Martha decides to test his knowledge – and his patience – and gets a very personal demonstration as the answer to her questions. The sex is incredibly hot, but this story is also worth reading just for the banter between Ten and Martha, which is sweet, funny, and very in character.

Story: Five Times the Doctor Wanted To Kiss Martha Jones In 1969 [And One Time He Did]
Author: radiantbaby
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 6255
Author's Summary: A 1969 fic that pretty much does as it says on the tin.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: Despite being a shippy fic, this fic makes a wonderful character study of the Tenth Doctor. radiantbaby manages to turn fluff into something that isnt just about the ship can be enjoyed by people that don't ship the two. The story fits really well into canon and is beautifully written, the description in particular is amazing. And I'm a sucker for Five times and 1969 fic.

This week I intend to share the Martha love and the Donna love about equally. Some fics will be short, one is very long.

Enjoy !

Story: Colours
Author: Padawanpooh
Rating: PG-13 for parts 1 - 5, R for part 6
Word Count: 1715
Author's Summary: Six interlinked ficlets for the LJ Lifeonmartha drabbles challenge inspired by the colours of the rainbow (excluding indigo!)
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, The TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: I adore padawanpooh's writing, and in this series of ficlets, she portrays a Ten and Martha who are strong and loving and good for each other, even before they take their relationship to the next stage.

Shouting directions to her hastily assembled medic team Martha, already covered in bright blood, was trying to hopelessly restart yet another heart when a cool hand fell on her shoulder.

It was the Doctor: her Doctor.

Martha closed her eyes, suddenly relaxing under his soothing touch, and she let her tears finally fall.

"Oh Martha," he said, voice soft and full of sadness, "sometimes we don't win: sometimes we have to let go. Sometimes, we have to let people find their own destiny."

Story: The Game of Making
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1,809
Author's Summary: Martha finds out what the Doctor really likes.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Martha
Warnings: AU, mind games

Recced because: It just might make your skin crawl enough that you hate yourself for enjoying it. This story is AU in terms not only of plot, but of character, I should note, but it's a true AU: Changes aren't random; they all stem from a central "what if?" I'll leave you unspoiled as to what the "what if" here is, but The Game of Making is one of the most interesting explorations of just what this whole Time Lord thing might mean that I've seen. In spirit it reminds me strongly of Big Finish's Unbound series.

Look, it's fanfic about an erotic Gedankenexperiment. What more do you need to know?

Here is the first of my two longer-story recs in honor of making it through to midweek.

Story: Collected Ficlets
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: All Ages through Adult (each ficlet rated separately)
Word Count: 11,828 (most ficlets are under 500 words)
Author's Summary: What it says on the tin - a collection spot for drabbles and ficlets of ~1000 words or less.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa/Tegan, Jack/Susan, Rose/Adam, Rose/Jabe, Sarah Jane/Benton, Sarah Jane/Benton/Harry, Benton/Yates, Benton/Jo, Harry/Benton, Barbara/Susan, Master/Brigadier, Master/Jo, Third Doctor/Jo, Romana/Duggan, Rose/Nancy, Tenth Doctor/Jo, Tenth Doctor/Martha, Seventh Doctor/Rose, Rose/altverse!Suzie, Rose/altverse!Sarah Jane, Rose/Benton, Jack/Ace, Martha/Harry, Martha/Sarah Jane, Ace/Hex, Fifth Doctor/Nyssa
Warnings: nope

Recced because: These are simply amazing. They just might be my favorite thing in all of Who fan fiction, and I don't say that lightly. I don't know how she does it, but [livejournal.com profile] livii manages to pack so much into these little stories. Entire worlds and relationships and so much emotion in tiny snapshots. And I really think there is something for everyone here. Whatever pairings or characters you prefer, whether you enjoy angst or humor or action, it's all there. And the best part is, it looks like she is going to continue to update the masterlist as she writes more of these ficlets, so bookmark this page, people!

(PS. As an added bonus, Benton stars in a number of the stories and she writes him fabulously.)

here's a taste from my most favorite of the ficlets... )

Story: Nothing But Flowers
Author: vali
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 23,066
Author's Summary: There's flowers, sex and breakfast in bed, but the honeymoon's still over.
Characters/Pairings: Martha, Ten, TARDIS
Warnings: Doctor/other non-con and other not-vanilla acts

Recced because:
This beautifully written story presents us with a relationship of complexity and nuance, where oblique dialogue and flashes of insight combine to create an astonishing, if imperfect, mutual understanding between the Doctor and Martha. Nothing but Flowers deals with the themes of loss and persistence with subtlety and sensitivity, without insulting either the characters or the reader by oversimplifying or oversentimentalizing. I love the dialogue, snappy and witty, but beneath  that you can see the Doctor and Martha probing, looking for the boundaries of this relationship. In the end, there are no easy answers, but there is connection.

And then of course there are the flowers. And the sex.

Marvellous Martha Jones

I've been recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week and here is my final recommendation - and this time it's a Martha/Ten fic.

Story: Shredded
Author: parrotfish
Author Summary: Past actions bring consequences that are not easy to face. But for the Doctor and Martha, It's a chance to clear the air. "What do you want me to say? That I forgive you?"
Characters: Martha Jones, The Doctor
Rating: Adult
Word count 2455

Recced because: Parrotfish writes beautifully, and her stories about Ten and Martha are very well-observed, and frankly, she should be encouraged to write more !

This is a post-Season 3 fic in which Martha makes good use of her UNIT and Torchwood connections to save the Doctor (yet again) and they come to a new understanding:
The Doctor felt a thread in the complex web of his universe go slack, cut suddenly and hanging loose, death removing it from the pattern of all living things.
Strong hands lifted him, and he shivered as they carried him, dripping with water and blood, and laid him on dry, hard ground.
A face appeared before him, serene and dark, and he was sure he was delirious, because it was more than he deserved.
"What..?" he gasped through bloody teeth.
"Don't try to talk. You're going to be all right," she said in her reassuring way.
He knew it really was Martha Jones in the moment before everything went black.

It's possible the ending will make you melt, and if you like this, be sure to read the sequel: In the Dark (which is even more melting in my view !)

Story: Night Ice
Author: Significant Owl
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Watch how you go. Mind the gap. [Ten, Martha, post-Family of Blood]
Characters: Ten/Martha
Warnings: None
Word Count: 5,259

Recced because: Visiting a planet where lodgings come in exchange for a story, Martha has some thoughts about playing Scheherazade to the Doctor's king. After John Smith, she has all too much perspective on the limits she'll always have placed on her as the Doctor's companion, and about the Doctor's own limitations. This is about why Martha Jones stayed a bit in love with him anyway, and decided to write her own story.
[identity profile] in-the-end.livejournal.com
Story: OTP Forever
Author: bytheseaside
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary: Revenge is sweet femslash.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones, Martha Jones/Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because you can't beat good crack!fic, that's why. Also, I am of the opinion that this fandom is in desperate need of more femslash; especially with this pairing. The author manages to highlight the fact that the Doctor continues to talk about Rose after she's gone, despite being written before Series 3 aired. All in all; a very funny story. Plus, any fic that features Doctor/TARDIS can't be bad.
[identity profile] in-the-end.livejournal.com
Story: Five Times After Goodbye
Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: Twenty years after she said one goodbye, she wonders if this is a second.
Characters/pairings: Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because I love the idea of the Doctor visiting any companion after they've left him. In this particular story, he visits them whilst they're still on board but because he knows he's going to lose them at one point, he still visits to make sure they're all right. However, I think he's visting them more for his sake then for their's. The concept of this fic, in my opinion, could work with most companions which is what makes it so special. I especially love the ending to this one and how it brings it right back to their first meeting.
[identity profile] in-the-end.livejournal.com
Story: Dreaming In Metaphors
Author: Yahtzee
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: The Master's Paradox Machine proves to have been a bad influence on the TARDIS, and the Doctor is certain that Martha is the only one who can help him set his ship to rights.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because it completely caught me by surprise, that's why. Martha goes back to the Doctor and it starts a little too mushy for my liking but, well, you'll see if you read (which you totally should, yes), the ending is excellent. The pace and dialogue is just perfect and the settings that the Doctor and Martha find themselves in are brilliant.
