Greetings, [community profile] calufrax! I know it's been a little while, but we're back, and I'm going to kick things off with two weeks of recs. (I'm still looking for reccers starting in late March, too, so please volunteer if you're interested!)

Story: Extract (Artificial Vanilla is Cheaper)
Author: livii
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 907
Author's Summary: This has happened more times than he'd like to admit.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: Noncon/dubcon

Recced because: I was going to use this first rec to take advantage of our new rule allowing previously recced fics, but when I checked back through the comm archives to find out when this story had last been recced, it turned out ... it hadn't been. Which is frankly shocking, because it's a hell of a story: a dark look at how the Tenth Doctor and Rose might have had a damaged, dysfunctional relationship based on other relationships they'd had and lost. I've shipped Doctor/Rose for years, but I still love a story that explores how things could go terribly wrong, and this is unquestionably that story. It's short, but it packs a hell of a punch.

Hello again! It's my first time reccing in a while, and I signed up specifically because I wanted to gush about this story. Without further ado...

Story: A Ghost Story
Author: Kelkat9
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 76054
Author's Summary: Stressed-out post grad maths and computer science student Rose Tyler moves into a house with a reputation for being haunted. She scoffs at the things at first as she has her own issues with her personal life and school. Soon, she can’t ignore or logically explain what’s happening. Her inner scientist is intrigued and she starts to investigate. The more she investigates, the more things happen and she becomes obsessed with solving the mystery of the house and the disappearance of one Dr. James McCrimmon who vanished mysteriously in 1968.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, other DW characters
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing

I've recced Kelkat9's stuff before, and I'll probably do it again, because I love a good Ten/Rose AU, and no one writes them finer than she. This story is exactly what it says on the tin-a ghost story/haunted house story, and it's deliciously creepy. I don't recommend reading at night, unless you want to make yourself jumpy and uneasy. This is more than just a ghost story, though, it's a mystery and a love story, too, and all the various plots weave together beautifully. Trust me, you want to find out what happened to Dr. James McCrimmon. Even though I know how it ends, I've reread this story 3 or 4 times because it's just so perfect.

Story: Together in the Altogether
Author: ABadPlanWellExecuted
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4721
Author's Summary: What's a little nudity between friends?
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The whole “unexpected nudity reveals hidden amorous / romantic feelings” scenario is a old trope in fan fiction, I know - I've even used it myself - but this is a particularly fun example. It's silly, it's cute, it's hilariously disgusting. The dialogue is pretty brilliant, especially the Doctor's. Read it for the slug prison, if nothing else.

Author: Fayth
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3,086
Author's Summary: They are out of milk--again--and need to take a short cut. The Doctor doesn't have a great sense of direction.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler
Warnings: A certain degree of spookiness

Recced because: "Spooky" and "adorable" are two words that don't usually belong in the same sentence. But, in this case, apply in equal measure. :D Because there is simply no other way to describe what you're about to read.

Story: Ten and Rose Do the Hellmouth
Author: [livejournal.com profile] biggrstaffbunch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6,467
Author's Summary: A visit to the Hellmouth so Rose can see her first-ever vampire results in even wackier hijinks as the Doctor finally goes toe-to-toe with someone sexier than him. Or, Rose Meets Dracula.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), Rose Tyler, Other Characters
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: I promised a funny fic recommendation for my last one, and this one isn't merely funny, it's hilarious. Rose meets Dracula here (and this Dracula is particular awesome), and if that isn't enough to pique your interest, this is a Doctor Who/Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover (although no worries if you aren't a fan of the latter--all that's necessary to the plot is explained in the story, and the primary focus is still the Doctor and Rose, although the action is set in Sunnydale). This fic is one I have re-read over and over again, mostly because it makes me laugh, in that I-really-shouldn't-drink-coffee-while-I-read-this sort of way.

Story: Five Slush Puppie Flavours
Author: lunarsilverwolfstar
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 547
Author's Summary: One-shot. There's a flavour for everyone. Rose thought she knew her favourite until she tasted one she'd never had on a certain Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Rose, Adam, Jackie
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Apparently, today is a happy day, when it comes to recs. This is a short '5 times' sort of fic, but it's well worth your time. One of my favourite fic tropes is little stories that... well, they aren't a story, they aren't an adventure, they're just little anecdotes that you might tell the kids one day; though there is some kind of chronology to it, this story is one of those. And then there's the shipping.... well, I won't ruin the ending, but it's adorkable. Yes. Adorkable.

Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Donna Noble

Recced because: Though Ten/Rose isn't my favorite pairing, this engaging and well written fic drew me in and I couldn't stop reading. Definitely worth consideration, no matter what your OTP.

Hi!

I'm Cicci (ciccigreen on Teaspoon) and I'm your reccer this week! This is my third time reccing, and I've enjoyed it immensely the other two times. I alternate between being a Donna/Doctor and Ten/Rose-shipper, I love a well-written sex scene and I'm passionately interested in feminism and gender issues. I also read way too much hurt/comfort for my own good.

Without further ado, let's start the week off with some really good sex.

Story: Burn
Author: sinecure
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1108
Author's Summary: Rose enjoys the view.
Character/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced Because:

Sinecure does the seemingly impossible in this little gem of a fic: writing PWP that's technically just sex but no plot, but really so much more. We don't know anything about the Doctor's and Rose's relationship in this fic, we don't know where in their time lines we are, and in fact, we don't even know what led them to have sex here in the first place.

But we don't need to.

Sinecure shows perfectly how to build an entire story that's just implied, but without leaving the reader unsatisfied. We don't need to know the details because we understand anyway.

Story: Should I Stay
Author: valforeverblue
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 41703
Author’s Summary: So many years have passed since she was left behind with a clone of the man she loved. Desperate to return home, Rose Tyler was ready to do whatever it takes to make that happen. But something unexpected happens. She suddenly finds herself back in her own universe on a beach that resembles the very one she was visiting. And there, standing a short distance from her, was the Doctor.
Characters/Pairing:11th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Brian, Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: It doesn’t let the Doctor off the hook for just leaving Rose and the Metacrisis at Bad Wolf Bay without considering whether that was what they wanted, too. It tells a heartbreaking story of what happened to Rose and her family after the Doctor left them there, and how she comes to find him again, albeit in a different body than the one she knew him in. It also gives an interesting look into what Amy and Rory think of this newcomer to their group, and how they feel about her relationship with the Doctor as it relates to River Song.
[identity profile] doctorxdonna.livejournal.com
Story: Spare Parts 'Verse
Author: Fogsblue
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 8888
Author's Summary: Rose and some other companions meet an interesting quirk of Time Lord biology.
Characters/Pairing: 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, 11th Doctor, the Master (Simm), Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Reinette
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: This is crackfic at its most delicious. There are plenty of fics that deal with the differences between Time Lord and human biology, and this one deals with-you guessed it-a certain talking part of the Doctor's anatomy and the hilarity that ensues when his companions encounter it. Scottish accents...they're not just for Time Lords anymore!
[identity profile] doctorxdonna.livejournal.com
Hello again folks! Feels like I only recently recced, but I hope you don't mind having me again ;-) . My repetoire is mostly NuWho, but a few classics thrown in as well. My first recc is one I just finished reading, and I was absolutely hooked when she updating! You get it all in one shot though, so I hope you enjoy.

Story: Heeled
Author: Jellyneau
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 105192
Author's Summary: There he was. The 'Oncoming Storm'... caught, caged, and clad only in his pants... reduced to trying to look adorable enough to adopt in an effort to gain his freedom. But adoption isn’t the ticket to freedom the Doctor hoped it would be, and he discovers that if he wants to obtain it, he will will have to make some decisions that could easily change not only his and Rose’s lives, but the lives of all those on an entire planet as well.
Characters/Pairing:10th Doctor and Rose Tyler
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: The story line and character development is just incredible, and it's all written around the idea that our pets are actually sentient creatures (and maybe they aren't always happy about the arrangements, as in the Doctor and Rose's case being captured against their will). Jellyneau has created a complex world of characters and creatures (the Danarians) with a culture and society all of their own. It’s totally fascinating, and almost feels like it could be a serial in NuWho, but in addition to that we get the blossoming love story of the Doctor and Rose as well, which adds a whole other dimension to the story. It’s so well-written, it’s addictive! You’ll be clicking next chapter, next chapter, next chapter and be done before you even know it.

Story: Winner Takes All
Author: LN29
Rating: Teen
Word Count:205,464
Author's Summary:A man with two hearts wakes up in an underground cavern with absolutely no memory of who he is or how he got there. Or who the nine strangers with him are. But what starts as a search for answers and identity rapidly turns to a fight for their very survival as the true stakes of the twisted game are revealed, and a surprising connection is forged.
Characters/Pairings: 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler, other canon characters
Warnings: According to the author none, but there are some emotional (and sometimes violent) character deaths. So I'll warn for feels, just in case. And some violence.

Recced because: it's one hell of a wild ride, and one I'd take again and again. This was one of the very first fics I read when I first joined the Teaspoon, and I fell completely in love with it. I think if Suzanne Collins and Russel T. Davies had a little fanfiction lovechild, it would be this story. LN29 weaves a tale so vivid and complex, you will be sad to see it end at a mere 205,464 words. The beauty of the story is that it's so well done, you could have little to no background knowledge of Doctor Who and still be captivated. That we as the reader recognize who the individual characters are though makes it that much more exciting. I have a soft spot in my heart(s?) for this fic, I hope you'll find a place for it in your own.

I apologize for the lack of post the last two days, I've been on the road and not connected to the internet. On Monday I'm going to France and I'm not sure how much internet access I'll have there, but I'll try to post as often as I can!

Without further ado, I give you today's rec:

Story: Petals
Author: Kate Andrews
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex, mild drug use
Word Count: 5570
Author's Summary: There was, as it turned out, a handful of only slightly bruised rose petals hiding down the front of her knickers.
Genre: Het
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose,

Recced because:
Continuing the sex theme, I give you my absolute favorite sex fic, my go-to-fic, as it were.. It's a wonderful one-shot set in Amsterdam, and features in the author's words "explicit, slightly kinky sex" which means the Doctor and Rose shag in public on one of Amsterdam's many bridges. Guess what I was thinking about when I was in Amsterdam in April!

Petals is a bit like those photographs that are so sharp and detailed that they seem almost otherwordly. I'd call it magical realism except there's nothing remotely magical about it, but somehow it feels almost like a dream.

Kate Andrews has a very plain, no-nonsense writing style, she describes everything inexquisite detail but lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions on the feelings and thoughts of the characters' actions. A true masterpiece in the art of "show, don't tell."

Go read and give her some love.

"[The petals] are from my knickers, by the way." )

Story: Cusp
Author: Value Turtle
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex
Word Count: 27856
Author's Summary: It's weightless, on the cusp; thrilling, too, waiting for gravity to take effect and fall, fall, fall
Genre: Fluff, Het, Humor, PWP, Romance
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith

Recced because:
I'm sensing a theme for this rec-period.

Sex.

To quote the lovely movie The Holiday: "Sex makes everything more complicated. Even not having it, because the not having it... makes it complicated." Don't the Doctor Who shippers know this well!

In this fic, however, Rose and the Doctor have sex. It details their first time, in great detail, and it's one of those fics that actually gets sex, how it works and how it's messy and complicated and not all sunshine and roses. And also that it's fun. I think so many fic writers forget that not all sex is earth-shattering, but that it doesn't mean it's not good. And people enjoy it because it's fun, not because it's perfect.

One of my pet peeves is where people who sleep with each other don't talk. Communication people! And Rose and the Doctor communicate here, and show that communication improves sex. I love to see that in fic.

Sorry for the ramble. Just read the fic and give the author some love!

"That wasn't bad. For a first time, I mean." )

[identity profile] saaammie.livejournal.com

Hi!

I'm [livejournal.com profile] saaammie (Cicci Green at Teaspoon), your reccer for these two (!) weeks. It's my second time reccing here at Calufrax and I enjoyed it a lot last time. It feels good to properly reflect on the stories I read, and why I want others to read them.

I'm a Swedish college student (or recent grad, actually), and I've been a Who-fan for about a year now. My favorite companion is Donna and my favorite genre is definitely hurt/comfort. I do enjoy torturing the poor characters.

Why is that, do you think? That hurt/comfort is such a popular genre?

Anyway. On to the first rec:

Story: Belle de Jour
Author: Chase820
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex
Word Count: 10551
Author's Summary: After the Madame de Pompadour interlude, Rose realizes that loving the Doctor is a far trickier affair than she thought. What kind of girl must she be, to accept the man he is now? Answering that question will stretch her loyalty--and her sanity--to the breaking point.
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Ten, TARDIS

Recced because: This fic shocked me when I first read it. And I actually didn't like it very much, because it presents such a non-romantisized picture of the Doctor's and Rose's relationship. Partly why we all read fanfiction is to escape reality and dream, I think, and this fic's reality is a slap in the face, a bucket of ice-water.

Which is what makes it so good, of course.
Rose is very very human and young and the Doctor is terrifyingly alien and it can't ever really work out. But they make do. It's a fic about choices and consequences and expectations and fitting together despite it.

Plus it's seriously hot. Bring a fan.

Story: A Promise of Forever
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 9206
Author's Summary: A mysterious blonde girl keeps showing up in each of the Doctor's lives, only staying long enough each time to save his life and slowly steal his hearts. By the time he figures out who she is, is it too late for their promise of forever?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor/Rose; 1st Doctor, 2nd Doctor, 3rd Doctor, 4th Doctor, 5th Doctor, 6th Doctor, 7th Doctor, 8th Doctor, 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Ian Chesterton, Sarah Jane Smith, Donna Noble, Barbara, Susan,
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing, Non-Con (The final warning is tagged on Teaspoon, but I have yet to figure out why).

Recced because: Bluedawn's muti-era Doctor/Rose love stories are simply brilliant. The idea that the Doctor might have loved Rose throughout all of his lives is particularly appealing to me, and she captures just how bittersweet it might be to have them cross paths long before he's supposed to know her. Plus, every one of Doctor voices are unique and spot on, and Rose's interactions with each of them is priceless. Also, t's a very unusual post-Doomsday Ten/Rose reunion story.

“I ask again...who are you? What is your name? Why do you keep showing up in my life, my lives?” he asks, knowing that he probably will not receive an answer for his troubles. At least she spoke to him this time.

She merely shakes her head at him as she did in his second life and the sad smile returns.

“Can’t you stop it? Can’t you get out?” he asks, desperately hoping for both him and her that she can.

Although, it’s nice to have a defender, a sort of guardian angel, on Earth. Not that he needs her help. Of course not. But then again...

“Who says I want out?” she asks, steel replacing the sadness in her voice. “I made my choice, Doctor.” There is something in her voice when she says his name. Something that makes him nervous and excited at the same time. The air grows heavy and he has received no answers from the mysterious human. She will be gone in a second.

“What choice? When? Who are you?” He shouts a litany of questions at her, hoping she’ll answer even one.

Story: Scheherazade
Author: ZephyrHawk
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 90,207
Author's Summary: Heroes. Monsters. Villains. Witches. True Love. Not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, other characters
Warnings: Explicit violence

Recced because:  The best crossovers weave bits of lore together to create a cohesive story, and in the very best, you can't see the seams between the different worlds.  This fic gets pretty close to that ideal.  The structural formula of Doctor Who is all about exploring new worlds through fresh eyes, and so lends itself readily to crossovers.  ZephyrHawk brings us into the world of the comic book series Fables.  I haven't read the comics myself, but it was easy enough to follow the story.  I probably would have found it a richer experience knowing the Fables history, but there are easily enough clues to fill in any blanks.

The basic framework is a reworking of Scheherazade, the woman who told the sultan a story every night for a thousand and one nights in order to belay the execution that awaited her on the following dawn.  It's a structure also used in the Fables prequel, 1001 Nights of Snowfall.  In this fic, Rose is the storyteller, telling the tales of her adventures with the Doctor to entertain the sultan.  All of the scenes with Rose are through the sultan's eyes, and filtered through the understanding and lore of the Arabian Nights mythos, which is a singular challenge and achievement unto itself.  ZephyrHawk painstakingly builds the relationship between Rose and the sultan as she changes in his eyes from a "wild animal" brought to his court as a conquest and a captive, to a spellbinding storyteller that he falls in love with and who holds him in thrall. I find the language and perspective in these scenes beautifully crafted.

On the flip side, interspersed with Rose's tales and the sultan, the Doctor and Donna are exploring the world of the Fables and preparing for a rising battle that is one part magical clash and one part paradox with encroaching reapers.  Just having Donna alone is a selling point for me - done well, Donna is my very favourite companion.  I find the plot gets a little messy and that the subplot gets a little short shrift (though it could be I'm missing some info that a Fables fan would fill in automatically), but the story doesn't really suffer as a result, and in the end...well, let's just say that the fairytale stories get a proper fairytale ending.  A pat ending, but appropriate and sweet all the same.

It's a lengthy read at 90,000+ words, and I now enjoy dipping into it for certain scenes and chapters when I come back to it.  If you're up for a longer read, I do recommend it, along with all of ZephyrHawk's stories.  She has a lovely grasp of language, and there are passages that are pure poetry.

Word Count: 1477
Author's Summary: The only time he tells her he loves her is when he loses control with her.
Characters/Pairings: 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: Ten/Rose romance fic has, from the get-go, been my favorite to both read and write. This story is one of my absolute favorites, and was among one of my early finds on Teaspoon. It is erotic, but also emotionally evocative. It's both beautiful and bittersweet. It's not easy to write smut and capture the essence of the characters, but this author does so beautifully. And while the setting for this is sex, it's the underlying feelings that make it so poignant. It presents a picture of the pair in a vulnerable moment--sweet and loving, yet so very fleeting.

Recced because: Dear God, what can I say about this fic? Not enough! There is such an eerie, dark fairytale aura, and the writing is jawdroppingly gorgeous. Ok, guys I am oh so sorry for being 3 days late. My RL has been nuts!!! However, know that I am actually on the ball now, and I am super-excited to rec for you this week! Hope you enjoy some of my favorities, and I promise to keep the Ten/Rose to a minimum :)

Story: Mysterious Ways
Author: Aenaria
Rating: Adult
Word Count:57076
Author's Summary:She's been lost, found the key, unlocked the door to the universe, wandered about, took a detour, stopped, stopped some more, then started again. Now, finally, Rose Tyler is on her way home. The Sonnetsverse reunion story. Diverges from S4 canon after 'The Unicorn and the Wasp'. Please note rating change for Chapter 15.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, Donna, Martha, Original Characters
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because: This is actually the penultimate story in a 'verse called "Sonnets Writ on Skin," which you don't HAVE to read to get this, but I highly reccomend you do, cause it's amazing. This is my favorite reunion fic of all time. Rose has a little sister named Gemma, and Gemma and a few other original charcters really make everything pop. They way the story unfolds it just gorgeous, and I can't say enough about it.

And here is my last rec for the week! I've saved one of my absolute favourites for last, enjoy.

Story: Coaster Castles (And Other Sturdy Defenses)
Author: rallalon
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 8106
Author's Summary: He's only a bloke in a bar, but he's a bloke in a bar who needs her
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Explicit sex, Angst

Recced because: How can something so angsty be so amazingly hot? Ten, in a vulnerable moment after season three and the trip on the spaceship Titanic, is heartbreaking in this fic. Rallalon writes Ten and Rose to perfection and does quite well at the smutty bits *waves face* but it is the emotion that makes me remember this, even 2 years after I first read it. The formatting with double spacing is a tad off putting but it is worth persevering and getting to the heart of the story.

Plus the last sentence. Ugh, my heart still clenches when I read it. If you are partial to the Rose/Ten ship and haven't read this fic yet, then I advise reading this poste haste!

Author's Summary: When entrusted with the power of the multiverse, it sometimes helps to have a user manual. Rose makes a wish that has unexpected consequences.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Other Character(s),Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because:I have been a long time fan of the Piers Anthony 'Incarnations of Immortality' series and this fic combines what I found fascinating about the three aspects of fate melded in with Doctor Who. How on Earth could I resist?

Regardless of your attitudes to Rose Tyler as a companion, her journey in this fic to find her way back across the void only demonstrates her compassion, her need to right wrongs and empathy for others (especially alien species) whilst introducing some terrific OC's. Plus there is Donna Noble sass which always go down a treat, especially when Nine is in the room.

Read if you enjoy some decent world building, a quite lovely Rose/Ten reunion fic and if you ever wondered how Nine would deal with a woman crankier than Jackie Tyler.

Story: Catch Me A Catch
Author: Queen of the Castle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2043
Author's Summary: Sarah Jane looked at Rose and saw herself back before the Doctor had broken her heart. And even though Sarah Jane had finally seen what the Doctor looked like when he was in love – a look Sarah Jane now accepted would never be directed at her – she wondered whether it was going to be enough.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey Smith, Tenth Doctor; minor Rose/Ten, Rose/Sarah Jane, (one-sided) Sarah Jane/Ten

Recced because: "But...you could come with us." The line that prompted a million AUs! Well, not exactly - but it should have, because what would have been better than Sarah Jane back in the TARDIS? This take on it specifically explores Rose and Sarah Jane's relationship with the two of them as companions (a dynamic further complicated by the Doctor being stubborn and oblivious). The friction between Rose and Sarah is wonderful; even as they become close - and closer! - Sarah struggles to adapt to this new generation of the TARDIS crew, and to define the limits of both old and new relationships.

Story: Loop
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,705
Author's Summary: "He was the champion – no the lord – of foolhardy plans, whipped together at the last second with barely a prayer of working. But this…this took the cake. It was all up to Jack now." Ten, Rose, and Jack in a spot of trouble, several times over.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th)/Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This story has everything – action, mystery, romance – all wrapped up in a Mobius strip of timey-wimey goodness. Sanguine Ink does such a fantastic job of capturing the frustration of getting stuck in a time loop, while still keeping the reader engaged and the plot moving. Everyone gets a chance to shine, and there is a special guest appearance in chapter three that’s totally worth the price of admission.

This is my final rec for the week. Thank you for your lovely comments on the stories I've recced, both here and on the stories themselves! And many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis for giving me the opportunity to rec again. Between the mix of New with a bit of Classic, long stories and short ones, hurt/comfort and crack, I hope you've all found at least one story to enjoy.

Story: The Adventures of Ten, Rose and Jack (a series of - so far - three multi-chapter stories)
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: Up to Teen
Word Count: Story 1: 30291 words in 13 chapters; Story 2: 38913 words in 15 chapters; Story 3: 24705 words in 9 chapters
Author's Summary: For the series: Starts with an AU of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday and follows the Tenth Doctor, Rose, and Jack as they travel through time and space.
Individual story summaries:
Two Months "Woke up one morning and there they all were," said Jackie. "Ghosts, everywhere! We all ran around screamin' and that. Whole planet was panicking. No sign of you." But what if there was? A story in which the Doctor and Rose show up at Jackie's flat two months earlier, completely changing the events of Army of Ghosts and Doomsday.
The Planted Past Ten, Rose, and Jack intend to visit a nice festival. Instead, they end up with mortal danger, time-y wime-y enemies, and a whole lot of running.
Loop "He was the champion – no, the lord – of foolhardy plans, whipped together at the last second with barely a prayer of working. But this…this took the cake. It was all up to Jack now."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, a whole host of guest characters including Jackie Tyler, Yvonne Hartmann, Ianto Jones, General Staal, a sentient plant and Captain Jack Harkness (no, that's not a mistake!).

Recced because: Sanguine Ink writes rollicking good adventures. From the first story, in which she creates an AU of her own stemming from an alternate ending to Doomsday, she takes her characters on a rollercoaster ride with lots of action and danger, solidly-constructed plot and plenty of humour, some of it laugh-out-loud. Her Jack has me nodding throughout, and she just gets the Doctor: the combination of extreme intelligence and manic hyperactivity, his ability to distract and feint, and even turning completely bizarre actions into the perfect plan. Rose is quick-thinking and determined, and Jackie is brilliant also in the first story. Even minor characters are drawn deftly and vividly in character; nobody is wasted in this story.

The series is Ten/Rose, but the focus isn't on the romance at all; it's there clearly enough for those who want it, but it never gets in the way of the story. A few Americanisms and occasional typos appear, but in stories as enjoyable as these they didn’t bother me at all.

A very short extract, showcasing the humour with no spoilers, is:below the cut )

If you like plotty stories full of adventure, a great cast of well-written characters, lots of twists and turns, and humour around every corner, give this series a try. And if you enjoy it, please tell the author!

Story: That Night on Betazorn 9
Author: ThroughanAmberFocus
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 820
Author's Summary: A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead walk into an intergalactic space bar on Betazorn 9. And when they leave, the bar is on fire.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Donna, Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is my favorite crack!fic of all time. If I'm having a bad day and need something to cheer me up asap, I read this and it makes me smile in a pinch. I've lost count of the number of times I have read this short, wonderful little AU fic - it never ever ever stops being funny and making me giggle out loud =) The narration is spot-on in the voice of Ten, and the story is just .... XD .... I love it. Love it! And I think you guys will love it too =)

Story: Too Close to the Moon
Author: 100indecisions
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 7,624
Author's Summary: Crossover with Harry Potter. Ten, Rose, Remus, and Tonks save the world from our friend the alien werewolf, last seen in "Tooth & Claw." Remus/Tonks, a little implied Ten/Rose.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), Rose Tyler
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story is a crossover with Harry Potter, focusing on Remus and Tonks. It focuses on the different kinds of werewolves in the two fandoms, and it matches up 10 & Remus, Rose & Tonks in their similarities to each other.

Story: When Dex was Three
Author: Azriona
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5453
Author's Summary: Dex Tyler is three years old, and life is good. And then, one day, with absolutely no warning whatsoever (if Dex Tyler is to be believed), it isn’t. A one-shot in the Crossroads series, though can be read very well on its own.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Ianto Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones, Original Companion
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a story told from the point of view of Dex Tyler, three-year-old son of the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler. It's part of a larger set of stories but it can be read as a stand-alone, as no prior knowledge of the series is needed. What I love about this fic is how deftly the tale is told, with a strong respect for how seriously children take the world around them. Although filled with moments that are fluffy and warmly humorous, the fic manages to create an underlying and realistic tension, and it explores some very deep themes about loneliness and the meaning of family. As for Dex himself, he is an utterly charming original character who deserves to have his own series someday.

For my final rec this week, we're going to do the otherside of End of Time, dealing with Ten's regeneration and how it's possible for Ten to have a happy ending regardless of what we saw onscreen.  Also, I've neglected Ten a bit this week, so I need to give him a bit of love.

Story:  Fracture
Author:  Kathryn Shadow

Rating:  All Ages/PG
Word Count: 2169/One-shot
Author's Summary:  He raised a hand and looked at it—saw the glow. The end. Game over. Please try again. Canon-friendly EoT fixfic.

Characters/Pairings:  10th Doctor, 11th Doctor, Rose Tyler Ten.5/Rose Ten/Rose

Recced because:
This rec is for all the people who are still heartbroken over the ending that Ten got in End of Time.  This scenario has been done a few times since EoT aired.  However this gives much sensitivity to Ten's feelings prior as the regeneration happens and his thoughts to the impossible event that happens in the aftermath.  It ranks up there to me as among one of the best EoT fix - its.  No excerpt as I'm not sure where I could put one without it being too terribly sad or spoilery to the story.

Happy Wednesday!  I come bringing mid-week relief, in the form of this fabulous fic by Karenbee.

Story: Jump
Author Karenbee
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2912
Author's Summary: Oh, she really shouldn't be here. She should just slip out into the falling dark, hope that time would fix itself.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:: This story is the whole package. It is funny, emotional, well written, intense, sexy, sad- just good! Rose Tyler is trying to get back to the Doctor, but it turns out the dimension cannon is a less than precise instrument, and she ends up a lot of other places on the way. In one of them she meets the Doctor, but he's not met her yet. There are a very lot of rules about interacting with your own timeline, and Rose Tyler is about to break them all...

Story: and explode into space
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2716
Author's summary: "I'll have to settle down. With a house or something - a proper house with... with, with doors and things - carpets! Me! Living in a house!... Now that, that - that is terrifying." An Impossible Planet AU.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, OCs
Warnings: consent issues, sort of

Recced because: It takes what looks like happily ever after fluffyfic and twists it into something subtly creepy and quite clever. I'm sure most of you who've been following Calufrax from the start know that I'm a sucker for Tenth Doctor horror fic, mostly because I really do find said Doctor to be creepy. So it's always nice to find fic that backs me up on this. What I especially like about Roach Patrol's fic, though, is that the Doctor doesn't even have to go all Oncoming Storm to freak me out. His creepiest moments happen while he's being nice.

Story: Don't Stop Me Now
Author: overbright
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1152
Author's Summary: Five things the Doctor didn't do after the Waters of Mars. And one thing he did.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: none

Recced because:

The Time Lord Victorious is exercising his power. This is one of those fics which takes events that should be happy, but lays a twisted subtext at their feet. It’s probably the best example I’ve ever read of what might happen if the Doctor well and truly did lose it and put his own desires above the good of the universe as a whole.

And it’s terrifying.

Last one! And I suspect I'm cheating a little bit, reccing three by the same author, but I have to confess I love this author so much that when time came to choose I couldn't find any others to recommend over them. This one, however, is at least quite different in tone to the last two...

Story:
We Could Go On Loving In The Same Old Way
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1161
Author's Summary: He would do anything for her… post-Doomsday AU “fix it” fic.
Characters/Pairings: Ten / Rose
Warnings: None listed, but it's a bit dark. Also, spoilers in tone if not in content for recent episodes.

Recced because:
I'm leaving as I came in; dark...

I'll be honest; although I've really enjoyed the new series, some of the decisions made throughout it haven't really thrilled me; I'm not really much of a 'shipper and I've found the Tenth Doctor at times really difficult to like. Which is why I like it when the fic -- and the writers of the show proper -- actually acknowledge this. This fic claims to be a post-"Doomsday" AU, but as the author acknowledges it's actually more of a post "The Waters Of Mars" fic; it doesn't actually spoil anything from that episode, and I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, but it essentially depicts a Doctor has decided to reverse old wrongs in his life... and why he really, really, really shouldn't. It's dark, bleak and confronting, and subverts all the "Doomsday" 'fix-it' fics which seek to bring Rose and Ten back together by taking it to an extreme that shows why this might not be such a good idea after all.

*** Anyway, that's all from me; as I (belatedly) pass on to my successor, I hope you've enjoyed the fics I've offered to you (even though I did sort of squeeze several of them in at the last minute!), and I hope you all have a happy holiday period!

Story: My True Love Gave To Me
Author: dettiot
Rating: PG for some kissing
Author's Summary: Christmas is a time for getting your heart's desire. Sometimes, the gift you truly want most can't be wrapped in pretty paper and bows. Post-Fear Her.
Warnings: Spoilers for anywhere after The Stolen Earth
Character/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)

Well, this is my last review. You can all breathe a sigh of relief now. :D

I figured I would finish off this week with a piece of pure fluff. Albeit, long fluff - but definitely fluff.

In honor of Christmas, which really is just around the corner, I bring you 'And My True Love Gave To Me,' by dettiot.

It takes place during season two, during a random Christmas that 10 and Rose decided to share. It all begins with the Doctor wants to hear rose singing Christmas carols and spirals to this marvelous bit of cavity inducing frivolity.

From Christmas shopping, to opening presents in jim-jams, this story takes us through a remarkably uneventful holiday in the lives of Rose and The Doctor.

Of course there is some UST, but most of what happens is just fluff, as the two of them discover their feelings for each other.

Enjoyable, it won't spark any brain cells, but it will certainly bring a smile to your face.

Story: Those Who Wander
Author: Rynne
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: The life and travels of Ten I/Rose/Ten II as a trio and Donna as their friend
Warnings: Spoilers for The Stolen Earth.
Rating: Teen
Character/Pairings: ...Um... everyone?

I'm not much for OT3; I prefer the relationships that are restricted to two people. Adding a third into the mix is just to complicated for my tastes, and although I never really consider myself rational or logical, something about the OT3 just seems to unorthodox for my tastes.

That being said, there are a few very notable exceptions. When this can be done with good characterizations, and it fits in with a decent plot, and its believable then it is certainly worth reading.

This story is one of those exceptions. It's told in two parts - the first paying homage to the Doctors past, and the second half dealing with his future.

The past is really neat. Rynne is one of those authors who can draw on hold Whodom well. All of the companions that are still alive make an appearence, and even more amusing is how the Doctor reacts to seeing them all again! He doesn't necessarily jump for joy, but reacts slightly awkwardly.

The second part of the story is where the OT3 comes in. Rose shows up again with 10.5 in tow. WITH DONNA! Even better. :P

It's really neat seeing the dynamics of all these characters play out, and seeing how the Doctors past is going to effect this alternative version of the future.

It's thought provoking, cute, and uses Lord of the Rings to describe Rose and the Doctors relationship.

If you like OT3, check it out.

Hello! I'm EdgeofWorld and I will be reccing this week! I read quite a few different types of Doctor Who fics, but my favorites are Rose/Doctor pairings.
Don't worry - I won't fixate on those. I will show you all of my favorites; specifically the one's that have kept me sane living in Japan this year.
I'll apologize in advance if I rec anyone who has been recced before, I've gone pretty far back in the community to check, but there are a lot of posts in here.
Cheers.

Story: A Thorn in The Drum
Author: Humansrsuperior
Rating: R
Warning: Non-Consent
Author's Summary: Rose has been sent an invitation to Harold Saxon's campaign promotional dinner party. Little does she or the Doctor know that this is the first stage of an old enemy's twisted plan. Characters/Pairings: Rose/10th Doctor
Warnings: Implied torture; Rose goes through a lot.

Recced because: Take one Bad Wolfish Rose, one 10th Doctor at his most doctorish; add one nefarious time lord called the Master, mix well and let sit for one year that never was.
I am a sucker for Bad Wolfish Rose, especially when it involves saving the Doctor. This piece delievers beautifully. I adore all of Humansrsuperior's stuff, but this piece is one of her best.
It asks the question what if; what if Rose never got sucked into the parallel universe. What if she who met the Master, and not Martha at all?
What I really like about this piece is the plot. It's not all a fluffy romp in the world of No Doomsday rainbows. It has darkness, angst, and a serious dose of adventure. The first few chapters take place before season three, and then it jumps to after they've reunited with Jack.
Since it is Rose who is present and not Martha, it adds a whole new level to the Masters twisted plan. He has a new way to hurt the Doctor, and he exploits that horribly. No one denies that The Doctor cared for Martha, but he loved Rose - and The Master takes glee in abusing that connection.

Her details are wonderful. She describes the muscular and emotional changes in the characters vividly. Your own body will twinge in sympathy when one of the characters get hurt. Not to mention the sheer twistedness that is usually associated with The Master. Oh, and she throws in a good dose of UST for good measure.
This story has the best descriptions I've read in any form of literature, hands down! Read it and you won't be disappointed.
