Story: The Lady of the Night, the Master of the Stars
Author: Forge
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1407
Author's Summary: Once upon a time, in an old town called Edgewood, Drusilla waited for the wicked man to come and take her away, a man known universally as the Master
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado), Drusilla
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I can’t think of anyone who writes the Master in any incarnation better than Forge, with all the right mix of sinister charm, and this is one of the author’s very best fics about him.

It features the original Master as seen from the point of view of Drusilla (from Buffy). This makes for an unnerving and beautifully written fic that makes me both want to dance with glee at the mere idea – but also to go and hide somewhere well out of reach of the darkness of the two combined.

No Doctor in this one, but it shows brilliantly that the Master deserves his own story every now and then – and that he is absolutely a villain to be reckoned with, not a cartoon baddie.

Story: Grant Me Just a Little Speech

Word Count: 4098
Author's Summary: The Master kidnaps Jo to use her for ransom, but gets an earful instead.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Delgado!Master, Three
Warnings: None

Recced because:

The title is a horrible, awful pun. No, okay, there’s more to it than that: watching the Master slowly being driven off the edge by Jo’s chatter is hilarious. The sheer randomness of stuff Jo manages to talk about is boggling. The Master’s attempts to keep himself sane are mesmerising. You end up feeling a bit sorry for him by the end… after all, it’s not like he ever really had a chance.

Today's rec is a very special kind of crossover called a "fusion." Normal crossovers are when two canons meet. Fusions are when they synthesize.

I suppose the easiest way to describe the difference between a normal crossover and a fusion is using the colors blue and yellow. A crossover is a pattern: something simple like blue polka dots on a yellow background or something complicated like paisley. A fusion is the color green.

Story: The Grandparent Trap
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5108
Author's summary: Early into her stay on Dalek war-torn Earth, Susan meets a girl who looks exactly like her. (Doctor/Master)
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/The Master, Susan Foreman, Sharon, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki
Warnings: Spoilers for The Dalek Invasion of Earth as well as The Parent Trap, sort of. Needless to say, the plot goes a bit AU.

Recced because: This is the story of how Susan meets her long-lost identical twin Sharon and how they fix up the Doctor and the Master's mess with togetherness. It is my absolute favorite Doctor/Master fic in the world. Which, I suppose, isn't surprising, because it steals its plot shamelessly from one of my favorite movies as a child: The Parent Trap. By which I mean the original sixties version that used to play on the Disney Channel, with Hayley Mills (and Hayley Mills!), not the Lindsey Lohan remake which didn't even exist until I was in high school. (Speaking of Lohan remakes, the original Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster is also way better, although the book is best of all.)

ANYWAY, I am utterly impressed as a fic, both on its own merits (the writing quality is top-notch) and by its merits as a fusion. Every time I reread it I notice new echoes of the original Parent Trap movie. I just love this fic so very, very much and I hope you all will love it too.

“I’m a Time Lady,” the other girl said, which was also a very silly thing to say on Dalek-infested Earth, where the lords and ladies of time were not exactly welcome dinner guests.

“So am I!” Susan said, which was also- well, you get the idea.

“Maybe you’re one of the people I was supposed to be keeping an eye on,” the other girl said, frowning. “But I think grandpapa would have mentioned you looking exactly like me.”

“Exactly,” Susan agreed, “except for the hair.” Her own short hair had proved both fashionable (in the 1960s) and practical, but she couldn’t help envying the other girl’s long braid.

Story: The Unexpected Storm
Author: Gabriel Chase
Rating: Teen (for swearing)
Word Count: 1,455
Author’s Summary: Benton is transferring the Master to a new secure location, when a cloudburst causes more problem for UNIT's most beleaguered of soldiers.
Characters/Pairings: Benton, the Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Yates
Warnings: None

Recced because:  It seemed a nice day to rec something for those who would like a light, enjoyable read over their lunch and this is one that fits the bill.  It is always a delight to find a good classic era fic, and with both the loyal Benton and Delgado’s suave Master being personal favorites, a story that places just the two of them together was irresistible.
The author does a fine job in this short story of keeping both completely in character; I could almost see those little disapproving quirks of the Master’s face as he offered his opinions of the available entertainment as well as his dignified plotting against the good-hearted but cautious Sergeant.  Can UNIT hold the Master, or have they bitten off more than they can chew?  A good dose of UNIT adventure for a May afternoon, perfect with a cup of tea.

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8119
Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

Author's Summary: The Master's latest overcomplicated scheme backfires, giving the Fifth Doctor a unique opportunity.
Characters/Pairings: The Fifth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Tegan Jovanka, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I may be a tad biased, as I asked for this story, but it's done so perfectly. The Fifth Doctor is able to confront the man the Master was, and it's as complicated, bittersweet, painful and wistful as you'd imagine. His plan to keep the Master this way is doomed, of course, and everyone knows it.

Tegan and Turlough, though they play supporting roles, are also characterised very well.

Author's Summary: Ten. Master(s). Cake. No chains or nakedness this time, though. Don't look so disappointed.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (all of them), Ten, Donna
Warnings: None

Recced because:
It's such an obvious idea I can't believe I haven't come across it before; we've had multi-Doctor stories, why not multi-Master ones? It takes a challenge about Ten (being naked), Three (being chained to Ten) and cake and twists it to provide a hilariously cracky story about the Master attempting to collaborate with himself to bake the Doctor a birthday cake of all things. They collaborate about as well as the Doctor usually does with himself in these situations; personalities clash, minor irritants bloom and the Delgado Master in particular seems less-than-impressed by what his future has in store for him. Bliss.

Recced because: I wavered all week trying to decide if I was going to rec this fic. I have read and reread both the story and its reviews. This story is hilarious and a fine example of how wonderful fluff can (and should!) be. It's hilarious from start to finish and is enjoyed even by those who cannot call themselves the author's crony. Story: “Just A Minute!”
Author:The Secretive Bus
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3095
Author's Summary: "Just a Minute" is that wonderful panel game where contestants are challenged to speak for one minute on a given subject without repetition, hesitation or deviation. Chaired, as usual, by Nicholas Parsons, we have with us tonight as our four players the Master, the fifth incarnation of the Doctor, the first incarnation of Romana and Clement Freud.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Fifth Doctor, Delgado Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s so ridiculously funny (as well as being proof that there really isn’t anything you can’t cross Doctor Who with). I have to confess that (despite living in the UK and having had every opportunity todo so) I never got round to listening to the radio show in question, so, trust me, you don’t need to know the crossover. Just imagine Romana, the Doctor and the Master competing against each other on a game show, speaking on the subjects of socks, cricket and Aberdeen among others, well… Hilarity ensues, to say the least.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook (vvj5 on Teaspoon) and I'm delighted to be back again to rec for this week. It should be a fair mix of eras and stories - I hope that everyone finds something to enjoy here. Let's pull up the curtain and begin...

Story: With A Little Illumination
Author: st_aurafina
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6269
Author's Summary: When an opera critic is torn limb from limb, the Brigadier suspects that more than just bruised egos are at play.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Josephine Grant, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's note perfect (sorry) right down from the nod to Phantom in the title to Jo Grant getting to save the day at the climax in her own endearingly stubborn fashion. It's in one sense a glorious celebration of the UNIT era, and in another it plays games and pokes fun at the cliches - how can you not like a fic which opens with the Brigadier telling the Doctor he's had crossword experts scouring phone books for likely aliases for the Master? With a suitably sinister and elegant original Master up to one of his improbable schemes, the Brigadier being forced to attend the opera with Undercover Jo (don't tell Doris) and the Doctor being rather too noble for his own good, this shouldn't be missed. And if you're a stranger to 1970s DW, why not start here?

Besides, it's worth it just to discover the Brigadier's verdict on the Master's efforts at opera composition. (Isn't that a sentence you thought you'd never see?)

(I should add that this was written for the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon, which produced some fabulous stories not so long ago, and I more or less bullied [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina into archiving it on Teaspoon so I could rec it here, which she kindly did - thanks!)

Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, The Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is almost too lovely a fic for words. Jo Grant, with the Third Doctor and the Master trapped by snow and awaiting rescue from UNIT. The result? Much bickering, competition, scheming, fluffiness and humour. There’s some great characterisation with all three being exactly as seen on screen while the Master’s approach to a domestic situation is such fun I hadn‘t had nearly enough of it before he reverted to his usual villainy. And Jo's response to her current housemates' rivalry is great. Good Delgado!Master fics are hard to come by, so don’t miss this.

Recced because: It's good. It's very, very good. Which is probably damning with faint praise, but I've been staring at the computer screen for the past half-hour trying to figure out how to describe why I love this fic so much and that's really all it boils down to: it's very, very good. There's a relentless dream-like logic to Bagheera's prose and her alternate Fourth and Fifth Doctors are so very familiar despite the fantastic setting we find them in. It's perhaps my favorite Doctor/Master fic of all and I'm so very glad she wrote it.

Warnings: Darkfic with consent issues.

Recced because: This story blew me away. I knew that x_los wrote some of the best Delgado!Master around, but I wasn't prepared for the power of this story and it nearly broke my brain. She understands them so well - their connection, their history, their obsessions - and she makes their relationship and all their questionable actions utterly believable. This is a very dark look at what the Master really wants from the Doctor and who these two men really are to each other.

Recced because: This is one of those stories that I honestly can't believe hasn't been recced before as it is utterly, utterly brilliant. I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite Master story. The author gets him. But not only that, she manages to make him even more complex than he already was, which is a pretty monumental feat in and of itself. Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Sydney Bristow
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: Mostly recced because good crossovers are hard to come by and this one is excellent. The first time I read it I only knew the Alias half, not having seen any Classic Who yet so I know it stands up if you only have a passing familiarity with Doctor Who.

Now that I AM familiar with the Third Doctor, I'm sitting here laughing out loud at how well Rheanna's written him and his relationship with the Master. This fic could have been an episode of the show, it's brilliant. As far as I'm concerned, it IS canon for both shows.

I'm re-reading it now and so far the author's doing a fantastic job of making the Alias characters accessible if you're not familiar with that show.

Mostly recced because how can you resist a fic with this great a sense of humour?

Warnings: none that I can think of

Recced because: It's the Third Doctor and the Delgado!Master trying to do domestic together and failing utterly. It's funny and witty and so very, very true. And because it's by livii, it goes without saying that the character voices are flawless. I could quote you all my favorite lines from this fic, but I'd end up quoting the whole fic. Just read it. It's good and unless you're completely allergic to slash or to Classic Who it will make you smile.

You might think a TARDIS, with its infinity of rooms and being much, much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, would be plenty big enough for two normal-sized, humanoid Time Lords.

You'd be dead wrong.

I don't know how she does it, but [livejournal.com profile] livii manages to pack so much into these little stories. Entire worlds and relationships and so much emotion in tiny snapshots. And I really think there is something for everyone here. Whatever pairings or characters you prefer, whether you enjoy angst or humor or action, it's all there. And the best part is, it looks like she is going to continue to update the masterlist as she writes more of these ficlets, so bookmark this page, people!

Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's beautifully written, with an obvious affection for the Doctor and the Master and their long, twisted, ultimately tragic relationship. The language is economical, perfect, and lyrical. The story focuses on their youth, but touches upon their ensuing significant encounters, painting a poignant, painful picture of two powerful beings who could neither embrace nor escape each other.

Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master
Warnings: PWP

Recced because: The slashy possibilities of Three/Master practically leap off the screen in their serials. Here, that dynamic is captured in a well paced fic. The Doctor, angsting about his exile on Earth, encounters the Master. He stops to have a talk, which turns into more. Why would the Doctor tolerate the Master's presence? Well, his reasoning is plausibly explained and so are the Master's motives. The dialogue is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.

Characters/Pairings: Delgado!Master/Turlough
Warnings: none

Recced because: The idea of Turlough keeping a diary is one of the greatest things ever. And that's exactly what he does here. It's at the Doctor's urging, of course, since Turlough has initial reservations about setting his thoughts down on paper. Once he gets started, though, he finds a favorite topic: his attraction to the Master, which even Turlough himself thinks is disturbing, considering that the Master is evil. The solution? Turlough decides to seek out an earlier, presumably less insane, regeneration of the Master! This story is one of the funniest things I've read in ages and the characterization of Turlough is excellent.

Story: Not Dark Yet (series)
Author: Jaconda
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: Six stories, 50,447 words
Author's Summary: Exploring the universe from the Master's perspective and through the eyes of Leto, a woman whose world he destroyed.
Characters/Pairings: Delgado!Master, Original Companion, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, UNIT, Master (other incarnation)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Unlike the Doctor, the Master has always preferred to travel alone. It's a challenge to any author to give him a companion without softening or altering his character too much. Jaconda manages to hit this delicate balance. While the Master and Leto gradually forge a partnership over the course of the series, the Master never descends into sentimentality. Leto herself is a well-rounded and interesting character: compassionate enough to evoke sympathy in the reader yet desperate and pragmatic enough to make her travels with the Master believable. Throw in a couple of guest appearances by UNIT and a few gripping adventures, and you've got a compelling read.

Note: The first two stories feature the Delgado!Master and the Third Doctor. The remainder were written before Series Three and feature a post-Time War original Master who is reunited with Leto. Although the Doctor doesn't appear in the latter stories, Jaconda sets up a deliberate contrast between the actions of the Doctor and the Master in the absence of the Time Lords.

Recced because: I know it's probably cheating a bit, since this story was actually written for me in a ficathon, but it really is one of my favorites. I absolutely adore it, and I just couldn't pass up the chance to point people in its direction.

It's actually a series of five short snapshots in time, each one featuring a different incarnation of the Doctor and his various companions. One of the things that I adore about this story is that it features such a variety of companions, including several from the Big Finish audios who aren't seen in fanfiction nearly enough. (Evelyn! Hex!) It's hilarious at some points, bittersweet at others, and everyone is very much in character.

Story: End of Devils
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Ben and Polly take a short break in the picturesque village of Devil's End.
Characters/Pairings: Ben/Polly, the Master
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's always interesting to look at the lives of companions after they've stopped travelling with the Doctor. In this case, Ben and Polly are married and living pretty ordinary (in fact, rather boring) lives. When they go on holiday in a village called Devil's End, though, all that could change, because the Master is lurking around. Certain elements of this charming story make more sense if you've seen the Third Doctor serial The Daemons (if you haven't, the Daemons summary at Wikipedia should help), but the best bits lie in the interaction between Ben and Polly, and the little details about their lives. Also, the name they gave their son? The perfect touch.
