Story:Ten Times Trouble
Author: TigerKat
Rating:All Ages
Word Count:~8100
Author's Summary:Ian and Barbara are getting married. All ten Doctors go to their wedding. Chaos ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, All Ten Doctors and assorted companions

Recced because:

I love fics that have all the different regenerations of the Doctor. Only the first 10, as this was written before Eleven, but still. I have a soft spot for Classic!Who, and Ian and Barbara as companions. This is a lovely view of their lives after they returned home, and I like how all the Doctors came to their special day. Showing that they won't ever be forgotten! By him, or by us loyal fans.

Story: Turn Your Back
Author: Singe
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21943
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor had a simple philosophy about public nudity. "If it embarrasses you, turn your back." Hmmm, what about the other Doctors? Here are ten humorous vignettes with a central theme of nakie-ness.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 10 and various companions (ETA for the intrepid calufrax tagger: Susan, Ian, Barbara, Victoria, Jamie, Liz Shaw, Brigadier, Mike Yates, John Benton, Sarah Jane, Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Melanie Bush, Ace, Jo Grant, Martha Jones)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Honestly, how can you pass up a story with that summary? Do you need more? Okay, it's ten stories that go effortlessly from era to era, that are quirky and imaginative and funny and outlandish. They are also well-written and fun, inducing a little bit of ear reddening blushes at times, but also exploring concepts of friendship, acceptance, vulnerability, and the tendency of the Doctor to gravitate to gift shops in more ways than one. And well, if it's not your cuppa you can always turn your back...

Small excerpt (chapter 7) )

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Hello and welcome to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax ! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. This is the first time I’ve volunteered to do this selection picking and I hope that I can point your way to some quality fiction – I happen to be a fan of every era of Doctor Who and its numerous spin-offs so you can expect some nice variety in material on key, ranging from beloved authors to one or two I think have never been featured before and deserve a look in! And as always, try and leave a nice review for them! :)

We kick proceedings off with some fun between the original pairing in Doctor Who – Ian/Barbara!

Story: The Gentle Art of Seduction
Author: Pendragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1477
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara’s attempts at historical sexual role-playing don’t go quite according to plan.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: Only very mild sexual references despite the summary.

Recced because: This is an author who writes Ian and Barbara brilliantly and it shows, plus seeing the lives of the TARDIS Companions after their departure is always fun, particularly in light of Russell’s recent reveal into their lives in SJA’s Death of the Doctor. Plus it references all the various historical periods Ian and Barbara visited in a flirty humorous way. It was actually in this slot a tough pick between this and Pendragon’s other great Ian/Barbara fic ‘The TARDIS Meddler’, also worth a look. I would love to see this author do some more First Doctor era fiction in the future!

Story: Eternity in an Hour
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3138
Author's Summary: "Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, Susan, One.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's unusual and lovely, an good Hartnell-era adventure with believable technobabble, wonderful characterisation and a great ending. Ian and Barbara are the focus of this story and their trust in each other is the underpinning of this story, but Lurky McLurklurk also captures the way the First Doctor could be both a powerful, frightening alien and a doddering old man, and the 'unearthly child' aspect of Susan.

Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara. Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor and Donna looking after a baby when neither of them quite know what to do is funny. It's the sort of story made more interesting by time travel, once we learn where the baby's come from. It's a good idea that I can see being canon.

Story: The Summer of '69
Author: bibliophile1887
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3214
Author's Summary: 1969: A young PhD student named Evelyn goes to a lecture given by a Mrs. Chesterton. 1972: A companion to the Doctor named Dr. Smythe meets Barbara again.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Evelyn Smythe, Sixth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: There aren't many Evelyn stories and this is a particularly lovely one. The relationship between the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn is just right - exactly as it is in the audios. Evelyn and Barbara are two companions who should definitely meet, given their shared interest in history. It's fun to see the Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Ian and Barbara all interact.

Author's Summary: Barbara Wright! Saving the world with Geometry! More so saving Ian with Geometry.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a short, fun story. It's exactly the sort of thing that happens to all companions - getting locked up. But this story has an different way out of it and it's interesting to see Ian and Barbara handle their respective positions.

Author's Summary: "The strongest of them all?"
Characters/Pairings: Ian, Barbara

Story: Anachronisms
Author: agapi42
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1820
Author's Summary: Time travellers aren't all that is out of place in England, 1848.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s charming and sweet and funny, and very Doctor Who-ish from start to finish.

This is another one of those stories that Big Finish must have been mad to turn down last year. And proof that in any incarnation the Doctor can’t do something as simple as posting a letter without nearly causing a temporal paradox, getting his companions into trouble and finding something alien hiding in an unlikely place.

Plus, it’s beautifully written, the characterisation of the early TARDIS team is lovely –Barbara worries over what the Doctor might do without her and Ian while the Doctor – well, after causing all of the above, the Doctor is off down the pub…
[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com
Note: I get off work at miserable-o-clock at night so most of my recs are going to appear late in the evening. Sorry about that and sorry about another 6th Doctor rec. My last, I promise! I WILL spread the love around...

Title: Field Trip
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Audiences
Word count: 5,482
Author's summary: "Ian and Barbara encounter an unexpected danger on their school trip. Luckily, the Doctor is there to come to their rescue. In a manner of speaking."
Characters: Ian, Barbara, Peri, the 6th Doctor, a pack of brats and a couple of monsters with tentacles.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's funny as hell! Spot-on characterization as well. A well-written charmer from beginning to end.

“It could be him,” said Ian as they hesitated at the entrance. “It’s incredible, but you know how he is — was.”

She remained stubborn, merely giving a small shake of her head and then she put a hand to the TARDIS. “Ian, I don’t think I can. Not again -.”

“Well, either that, or we have to explain how we lost a dozen children on a field trip,” he said. “And while to lose one child might be counted a misfortune, to lose twelve -!”

Story:Twelve Years and Four Psychiatrists
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3906
Author's Summary: Why Amy needed four psychiatrists. Cameos from Doctors 1-10.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Doctors 1-11 plus companions
Warnings:. None

Recced because: This is the best explanation I’ve read so far for Amy’s personality and how the twelve years of waiting affected her. The story is extremely funny, and could almost be considered crack!fic, except that the Doctors are all perfectly in character, and their encounters with Amy seem wonderfully plausible.

Story: The Shadow of Joanna
Author: LinworthNewt
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4082
Author's Summary: Between their departure from the Forest of Jaffa during the Crusades, and their arrival at the Space Museum on the planet Xeros, the TARDIS jumped a time track, and the travelers forgot what happened in the intervening time. Something lost, and something gained, passed between Ian and Barbara.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Vicki, the First Doctor, Princess Joanna; Ian/Barbara
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: This is darker than the events you saw on screen, and goes deeper. The true fate of the historical figure Princess Joanna is paralleled with Barbara's story, and events from canon are given real and very human consequences. Dovetailing into the serials The Romans, The Crusade and The Space Museum, this fic seems to turn the world 90 degrees, and let you see it in a new light. To quote the fic itself, history is not always kind to its heroes and heroines.

-

I hope this can be considered Monday's rec? I did mean to do a rec-a-day, but something I couldn't put off came up IRL.
[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com
Today's rec is a very special kind of crossover called a "fusion." Normal crossovers are when two canons meet. Fusions are when they synthesize.

I suppose the easiest way to describe the difference between a normal crossover and a fusion is using the colors blue and yellow. A crossover is a pattern: something simple like blue polka dots on a yellow background or something complicated like paisley. A fusion is the color green.

Story: The Grandparent Trap
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5108
Author's summary: Early into her stay on Dalek war-torn Earth, Susan meets a girl who looks exactly like her. (Doctor/Master)
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/The Master, Susan Foreman, Sharon, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki
Warnings: Spoilers for The Dalek Invasion of Earth as well as The Parent Trap, sort of. Needless to say, the plot goes a bit AU.

Recced because: This is the story of how Susan meets her long-lost identical twin Sharon and how they fix up the Doctor and the Master's mess with togetherness. It is my absolute favorite Doctor/Master fic in the world. Which, I suppose, isn't surprising, because it steals its plot shamelessly from one of my favorite movies as a child: The Parent Trap. By which I mean the original sixties version that used to play on the Disney Channel, with Hayley Mills (and Hayley Mills!), not the Lindsey Lohan remake which didn't even exist until I was in high school. (Speaking of Lohan remakes, the original Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster is also way better, although the book is best of all.)

ANYWAY, I am utterly impressed as a fic, both on its own merits (the writing quality is top-notch) and by its merits as a fusion. Every time I reread it I notice new echoes of the original Parent Trap movie. I just love this fic so very, very much and I hope you all will love it too.

“I’m a Time Lady,” the other girl said, which was also a very silly thing to say on Dalek-infested Earth, where the lords and ladies of time were not exactly welcome dinner guests.

“So am I!” Susan said, which was also- well, you get the idea.

“Maybe you’re one of the people I was supposed to be keeping an eye on,” the other girl said, frowning. “But I think grandpapa would have mentioned you looking exactly like me.”

“Exactly,” Susan agreed, “except for the hair.” Her own short hair had proved both fashionable (in the 1960s) and practical, but she couldn’t help envying the other girl’s long braid.

Story: Five Things Ian Does When He Gets Home

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1712
Author's Summary: The title sums it up so well, I just can't think of anything better.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton

Recced because: This is a very recent story, but it's one of the best studies of the life of Companions post-Doctor I've seen, covering the year between Ian and Barbara's return to Earth and their marriage.

Story: Time and KAOS
Author: Danny_B
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21,407 in seven chapters
Author’s Summary: Time-travel in the hands of terrorists is a terrible prospect, and one which the Doctor must stop at all costs. Fortunately, he has help: Maxwell Smart, agent 86 of Control. He's really in trouble this time.
Characters/Pairings: the Third Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, the Master (Ainley), Maxwell Smart, 99, the Daleks.
Warnings: None

Recced because: Those of you who have any passing familiarity with my own proclivities will not be surprised to find a Third Doctor fic this week, but when you add Ian Chesterton and a classic Maxwell Smart to the mix then stir well you’ve a real winner on your hands.

The cheesy malevolence of Get Smart’s KAOS is seeking the secret of time-travel and the author cleverly pegs not only the dialect of the bad guy mastermind Siegfried, but the well-intentioned cluelessness of Max as he deals with the flamboyance and confidence of the Third Doctor.  Add a middle-aged and confused Ian Chesterton and the Master, then top it all off with Susan in a  new and surprisingly believable regeneration and you have a brilliant day’s reading of cracky crossover entertainment ahead of you.   I expect a familiarity with the classic detective television show “Get Smart” would be very useful for full appreciation of this story, but it’s a grand romp to read either way.

Story: Armour
Author: Mamfidd82
Word count:1303

Author's summary:The Doctor always hides behind something or other. Usually, it's himself.
Characters/pairings:Ace McShane, Adric, Barbara Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Charley Pollard, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, Martha Jones, Peri Brown, Rose Tyler, Susan Foreman, Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (all of him).
Warnings: none.

Recced because: Well this one's just lovely. Touching, and sad, and a it painful, but lovely. A collection of moments, from both Old and New Who, that make you want to slap the Doctor and hug him all at the same time. And most importantly, catches the very essence of the Doctor in such a beautiful manner.
[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com
Story: 1967, the Chestertons and all that
Author: catelfemma
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5287
Author's summary: 1967 was a lovely year for all sorts of reasons, and Captain Jack Harkness was pleasantly surprised to find two old friends of a Doctor he'd never known there as well.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ian Chesterton, background Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Owen Harper, Ianto Jones, Toshiko Sato, "Algy"
Warnings: none that I can think of, really

Recced because: One of the things I love about this fandom is that you can pick the most random pairings--characters that never even meet onstage--and someone somewhere has written a fic about it (and chances are, it'll be good too.) In this case, the improbable pairing is Jack Harkness with Ian Chesterton and catelfemma makes it work. Of course, it probably helps that Ian and Barbara are swingers. They're married in the fic and although it's not the main pairing, what we see of their relationship is very sweet. The main pairing itself is equally endearing, with Ian's nervousness at being with a man for the first time being gently soothed by Jack. (It probably helps that despite technically being a Torchwood crossover, Jack's portrayal in the fic is more in line with his less emo Doctor Who characterization.) The build-up might be slow, but it's in no way boring.

Story: Birth of Destruction
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 12235
Author's Summary: While trapped in 1969, the Doctor finds employment at the local hospital and finds much more than he bargained for.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha Jones, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: None

Recced because: I always love the stories where the Doctor meets up with old companions when he and Martha are trapped back in 1969. This one does it within the context of a traditional Doctor Who mystery story, with aliens, murder, running down corridors, and a good set of original characters to balance it out and give it the feel of an actual episode of the show. It's nice to see Barbara (Wright) Chesterton still true to form, observant and sharp and quite able to take initiative once her suspicions are raised. And the interactions between Ten and Martha, as they transition from dealing with the mundane things like flats and jobs and money, over to conspiracy, alien invasion and general otherworldly peril, are really fun.

Story: Simple Gifts
Author: JessaLRynn
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: The Doctor knows what he is and what he did, what he always does. He has come to a decision, but when he stops to talk after Journey's End, a new Journey, to see the path behind him, begins.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (10th), UNIT
Warnings: None

Okay, no more mistakes on my part. I'm going to check and double check the fics that have been previously recced!
And... I'm going to do two recs today to make up for yesterday's repeat

Recced because:
It just seems so appropriate after the latest special. It takes place after Journey's End, and deals with Darvo's famous words.

Davros: The man who abhors violence. Never carrying a gun. But this is the truth, Doctor. You take ordinary people and you fashion them into weapons. Behold your Children of Time transformed into murderers.

The Doctor has decided to not take on anymore companions and he's just lost Rose and Donna. Alone and heartbroken, he goes to the one man who he knows he can trust - The Brigader.

This story takes us on a soul searching journey through the Doctor's old companions. As he visits them, he learns things about them, about himself, and what it really means to have a hand to hold.

Although I loved Waters of Mars, I really like this alternative. I especially like how it draws on the past to really flesh out the characters in the future.

I'm a big fan of all of Jessa L'Rynns stuff. She knows A LOT about Doctor Who mythology, right down to the minute details of Old Who. It makes for some stunning plots that are a lot of fun to read, because they are all possible!

Characters/Pairings: Susan/David, Barbara/Ian, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to have a happy Susan ending, even if it starts at the beginning with a crash landing in a junk yard. This does have a bit of a fractured style to it, but I feel like that adds to the story. This is an interesting look at Susan as she lives her life and deals with some of the consequences of other people messing with time.

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 924
Author's Summary: Ian doesn't dance. Or does he? An interlude among alien foliage and moonlight.

Recced because: It's a sweet little moment in time for Ian and Barbara. A quite walk with an unexpected alien encounter leads to adorable fluffiness from Ian. Fun interlude that makes me smile.

Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Johnny and the TARDIS make music together.
Characters/Pairings: John Chesterton, the TARDIS, Barbara, Ian, Ten, Tegan
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~1,500

Recced because: This is a terrific example of a remix that really works. The original is Tigerkat's excellent Listening (previously recced on Calufrax here). This story is a wonderful, lovely take on the original, teasing out different aspects and full of lightness and love. The different POVs on display – the TARDIS' in particular, but also little Johnny and Tegan's – are perfectly done, and the story is full of great little details, like the TARDIS' joy at the new life being created inside her, the moon landing get-together/reunion (especially "Aunt Dodobird"!), and even the Inferno gets a mention. It's touching and terrific work.

Author's summary: History is so many small steps.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~500

Recced because: After a long fic yesterday, here's a little bite of one today that manages to be absolutely pitch-perfect; it's an incisive look at what "making history" would be like for Ian and Barbara after they come back to Earth. As they watch the moon landing, we get brilliant insight into the implications space travel has on their lives, with just the right touch of cozy domesticity and love and friendship.

Story: Backwards Traveller
Author: Lydia Hunter
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,242
Author's Summary: The Doctor encounters an old companion who prefers to leave his past where it belongs.
Characters/Pairings: Ian, Peri, Six
Warnings: none

Recced because: The Doctor takes Ian for one last ride in the TARDIS. Never mind that Ian doesn't want one last ride in the TARDIS.

Backwards Traveller does such a beautiful job of showing what home has come to mean for Ian. I love fics that put a companion who's left and made his or her life next to a companion who's still aboard the TARDIS, still unfixed, because the contrast always seems to make them both seem more real. And everybody's so entirely, marvelously themselves here, especially the Doctor.

Story: Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey (Book I: Exile)
Author: I Walk In Eternity
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 33280
Author's Summary: “People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect… but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly…. timey-wimey…. stuff.” (The 10th Doctor, ‘Blink’) An adventure spanning all of the Doctor's lives begins with a series of vignettes from the eras of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Doctors. May they rest in peace.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ben Jackson, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Dodo Chaplet, Ian Chesterton, Jack Harkness, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, John Benton, Liz Shaw, Martha Jones, Omega, Polly Wright, Romana (author created), Susan Foreman, The Autons, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Some swearing

Recced because:
For my first rec of the week I wanted to start at the beginning, literally. Using the simple, yet brilliant, premise of a diary bequeathed from companion to companion, this story follows the life of the Doctor and those many companions, allies, and enemies who have been swept into the whirl-wind of his existence. The plot is, in some ways, straight-forward, but at the same time it is very, well, I guess the scientific term is “wibbly-wobbly”, as it darts from past to present. This is, really, a love song to the show. Every character from Jack, to the Brig, to Ben and Polly, to the Doctor himself(s), is perfectly voiced and painted with the palate of an author who is both a very talented writer and a very devoted fan. There are continuity references galore for those who like them, though the story should still be a good romp for someone who has only basic knowledge. There's a mystery as well!
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com

Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, One, Vicki
Warnings: None

Recced because: The recent [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon produced loads of great fic, but this is one of my favourites. It works as both a wonderful recreation and a lighthearted deconstruction of its era. The little soupcon of Ian/Barbara shippiness in the mix is wonderful (and doesn't render it non-gen in the slightest IMO, given how present the same sort of thing is in the canon), and somehow it's particularly nice to see Vicki used in a fic like this -- she's not in it much but [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook nails her characterisation perfectly, giving the lie to the idea that she's a bit of a cookie cutter Susan replacement.

Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19,646
Author's Summary: "One and Ian set out to explore, and of course the girls must follow - but where do they go from there? And does it matter how you're dressed?"
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Simply put, this fic feels like it should have been an episode during the 1963-64 season. The characterizations are spot-on, especially in the dialogue and the interactions between characters. (Plus, there is a lovely bit of Barbara/Ian shippiness!) The plot is well-developed, well-written, and captivating. Even the pacing of the story feels like a classic serial: when the action breaks at a chapter's end, you half expect the title of next week's adventure to appear and the episode's credits to roll. The only significant difference between the classic show and this fic, is that Primsong has the opportunity to write "in color" and uses it to brilliant effect. Whether you're a fan of the original team TARDIS or more partial to New Who, the skill with which this story was crafted makes it an absolute pleasure to read.

Story: A Cuddle for a Dalek
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spastasmagoria
Rating: All-Ages
Word Count: 1697
Author's Summary: There's only one thing the deranged dustbin wants in all the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Peri, Ace, Rose, Mickey, Jack, Gwen, Future!Doctor, and a Dalek.
Warnings: Silliness

This one is a wonderfully humorous multi-era romp, all centered around a Dalek (capable of a "temporal shift of infinite sadness") that just wants a hug. Particularly amusing are the reactions of Peri and Ace, but every scene is quite brilliant (including the small hints about the fashion sense of the future!Doctor).

Story: Le Temps Retrouvé
Author: Melengro
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 469
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara, walking home.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings: None, unless you don't know how Ian and Barbara leave the Doctor.

Recced because: The author describes the Ian/Barbara couple as "sickly-sweet", and they are, in a good and satisfying kind of way, the kind of couple that's impossible to break up cos they seem so perfect together. This is Ian/Barbara exploring that old trope "pretend we got married" and making it warm and believable and very very good.

Story: Parts
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5051
Author's Summary: It's a wonder the TARDIS was still holding together after all this time - of course, she'd had plenty of creative repairs.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, Mel Bush, Sarah Jane Smith, Susan Foreman, Tegan Jovanka, First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: A series of seven vignettes, one for each of the old skool Doctors. In each story the Doctor needs the help of his companion in order to effect repairs on the TARDIS. Each vignette is absolutely perfect, and the companion-specific ways in which the Doctor has to patch the old girl together are delightful. A feel good series perfect for this post-holiday lazy day.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1321
Author's Summary: A jumbled pile of old-school drabbles to share.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ben Jackson, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates, Polly Wright, Romana II, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), Victoria Waterfield

Recced because: This is gorgeous collection of drabbles that really are drabbles. And there is something here for everyone. The author nails the voices and the eras, and the whole series will definitely put a smile on your face. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Story: Cartographers
Author: [livejournal.com profile] calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2892
Author's Summary: Former companions during the latest invasion. (Set during tSE/JE.)
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Polly Wright/Ben Jackson, Ancelyn/Winifred Bambera
Warnings: none given

Recced because: This is a great shapshot of some Classic companions as the Daleks are at it again in tSE/JE. The pacing and characterization are stellar; it's insightful, funny, and ultimately delves into what being the Doctor's influence is really about. This has sailed straight into my personal canon.

And yet another inadvertently matching rec:

Story: Watching from the Wardrobe
Author: yesjamie [*]
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 700
Author's Summary: Susan's curious. She watches.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Susan
Warnings: Explicit Sex (and, specifically, voyeurism)

Recced because: I wanted to rec something from the kink meme in my week, and this is a fabulous story, which captures the feel of the Hartnell era despite being porn, and has an interesting take on Time Lord sex in there as well.

[*] yesjamie is (apparently) a collective of kink meme anons (but for all we know it may just be one prolific one!) posting to the Teaspoon from a shared account; I'd just like to point out that they're completely unofficial - I don't know their password and I don't want to.

Story: Fall Into the Sky
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1979
Author's Summary: Darkness falls around Barbara, dawn rises, rain caresses the turf, and she thinks of the man who had seen all the wonders of the cosmos and then whispered in her ear that she, a drab middle-aged history teacher, was the most brilliant star in the sky.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings: Character Death

Recced because: This is one of the most beautifully poetic stories I've read in this fandom. It also manages to be both incredibly sad and incredibly uplifting at the same time. Not an easy feat. It's a character study of Barbara, and what became of her and Ian after leaving the Doctor.

Story: Higher Education
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4019
Author's Summary: The spaces between, the things the Doctor can do that nobody ever questions - the easier lessons learned amid the adventures and the danger.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Third Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Ace McShane, Adric, Barbara Wright, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Ian Chesterton, Liz Shaw, Nyssa, TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: From hobbies to dangerously important life lessons, the Doctor's learned a lot from humans. The voices are all character-perfect, and the style of the vignettes goes from character study to humor to gen adventures effortlessly.

Last recommendation! Thanks very much for sticking with me, and I hope you've enjoyed my offerings.

Story: All the Maps Change
Author: Ligia Elena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2760
Author's Summary: "We are volcanoes. When we women offer our experience as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change. There are new mountains." - Ursula LeGuin
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings: None

Recced because: Barbara Wright is one of my favorite characters in the Whoniverse (equalled only by Evelyn and Sarah Jane), and this fic is a beautiful tribute to her. Ligia Elena takes Martha Jones's heroism in the Year that Never Was and sets it against Barbara's very different heroism many years earlier in dragging the Doctor kicking and screaming towards his destiny as the savior of the universe. The frame story is sweet, the inner story heartbreaking, and Martha and Barbara shine through it all. Plus, of course, there's Barbara/Ian shippiness; Ian reminiscing about his wife is one of the loveliest scenes in this fic. The brief appearance of their son John is a nice bonus for the audio and novel fans.

Story: Ian and The Beatles.
Author: Bad Dickens.
Rating: All Ages.
Word Count: 2571
Author's Summary: Ian pops out to get some milk in 2000. What of life and the Doctor since 1966?
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: My favourite kind of idea for a fic. A former companion has moved on with their life and they suddenly find themselves mixed up with the Doctor and the madness that is his!
