Characters/Pairings: K-9, Rose Tyler, Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None, but absolutely not to be taken seriously…

Recced because:How about a joke for the middle of the week? Okay, then: how many Doctors does it take to change a light bulb?

Frankly, anything would be quicker than all ten of him. It’s a short, daft fic but the sly humour at the Doctors’ expense makes me grin every time I read it. It’s completely silly, but it works and I keep sneaking back to it when I need cheering up.

Story: Lux Lucis Quod Sanus
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2318
Author's Summary:Free will is only an illusion of the light, and nothing really exists in the dark, so what is he doing wrong? The Doctor and the Master have very different ways of seeing the world.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Simm Master, Other Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This story is the sort of thing that fan fic exists for. ClocketPatch takes the Master and Doctor’s choice of screwdrivers (laser as opposed to sonic) and out of what was empty one-upmanship on the TV spins a beautifully written exploration of the two, their history and their fundamental differences. It's the kind of fic that makes you look at something you thought you knew and presents it in an entirely new light. (And did I say beautifully, beautifully written? Because it is.) I omitted this one last time because I assumed the next person along would be sure to rec it. I was wrong: I make good my mistake here. One to read, and read again.

Recced because: The characters and situation may be fantastic, but this captures all the grim mechanics and conflicting emotions of one of the most awful facts of life we ever face: Friendships can decay. Painful to read and worth it.

Story: Just Another Day
Author: vvj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook)
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1423
Author's summary: It's business as usual for Ian, Barbara, the Doctor and Vicki. You know, danger, imprisonment, escape...
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, One, Vicki
Warnings: None

Recced because: The recent [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon produced loads of great fic, but this is one of my favourites. It works as both a wonderful recreation and a lighthearted deconstruction of its era. The little soupcon of Ian/Barbara shippiness in the mix is wonderful (and doesn't render it non-gen in the slightest IMO, given how present the same sort of thing is in the canon), and somehow it's particularly nice to see Vicki used in a fic like this -- she's not in it much but [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook nails her characterisation perfectly, giving the lie to the idea that she's a bit of a cookie cutter Susan replacement.

Author's Summary: The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven visit the Paris Exposition of 1900, make some new friends, and investigate strange happenings..
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Steven Taylor, Vicki
Warnings: none

Recced because:

In the author’s own words ‘“1900” is a love letter of sorts to Paris.’ It’s a breathless historical adventure which whirls along on a cloud of phenomenal research and first hand experience; Paris is in this story. She is as essential a character as the Doctor or Steven.
This could easily have been a first Doctor episode – well, perhaps not the hot air balloon chase scene with Steven, that might have been a bit beyond the 1960s budget and SFX department to pull off – but it’s all presented with such a deft touch and caring hand. All of which is, in itself, enough to recommend this fic; furthering adding to its case is the fact that Steven and Vicki are the companions of choice. Theirs is a pairing which gets little love in fic, and has lost most of its actual footage to the bonfires of time. They are brought to life so vividly in this fic –
it’s a bit lengthy, but it’s definitely worth the plunge!

Story: Bright Young Thing

Author's summary: She traces a pattern in the slushy ice: a woman, weeping. Susan, and the time vortex.
Characters/pairings: Susan/Ace, Susan/Rose, One
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's amazing to me that a character who left the show in 1964 seems to become increasingly more fertile ground for fic, rather than less, as the show evolves. This fic packs a lot into a small space by twining several eras' strands around each other: a look at the Doctor's relationship with Susan, and what drove him from Gallifrey; the fallout for Susan herself; and a compelling combination of ideas from S3 with canon from earlier eras, especially as achieved by combining Susan with later characters. Mostly, though, it's just beautifully sad and one of my favorite characterizations of Susan. The juxtaposition of her strength and frailty brings her to life.

Hello! I'm stellastars and this week I'll be pointing you in the direction of just a few of the fics I have enjoyed at Teaspoon. There will mostly be a mix of Classic Who, New Who, and Torchwood, but with a hint of Sarah Jane Adventures, Big Finish, and maybe even a crossover. I thought we'd kick off the week by starting at the very beginning, with a gen adventure featuring One.

Story: The Benefits of Being Monochromatic
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19,646
Author's Summary: "One and Ian set out to explore, and of course the girls must follow - but where do they go from there? And does it matter how you're dressed?"
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Simply put, this fic feels like it should have been an episode during the 1963-64 season. The characterizations are spot-on, especially in the dialogue and the interactions between characters. (Plus, there is a lovely bit of Barbara/Ian shippiness!) The plot is well-developed, well-written, and captivating. Even the pacing of the story feels like a classic serial: when the action breaks at a chapter's end, you half expect the title of next week's adventure to appear and the episode's credits to roll. The only significant difference between the classic show and this fic, is that Primsong has the opportunity to write "in color" and uses it to brilliant effect. Whether you're a fan of the original team TARDIS or more partial to New Who, the skill with which this story was crafted makes it an absolute pleasure to read.

Story: Ten Moments
Author: golden orange
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 6859
Characters: Doctors 1-10, various companions
Author's Summary: Ten Doctors, ten moments

Recced because: We all have our Favorite Corners of Who Fandom. I mean, how could we not? The show's been around for forty-odd years, with a revolving door of companions, monsters and villains, One School-Two School/ Old School-New School, and ten different actors in the star role-- the main cast alone could field two soccer teams and a rowdy bar crowd to cheer them on and get into brawls. At the same time, I think we really do Love Them All, even if we don't know it yet. And once in a while an author comes along and reminds us of that. I love the diversity and creativity of these moments, how the author not only gets the characters and voices of every era down pat, but also seems to know exactly what kind of moment each Doctor needs-- in style and substance-- in order to shine. For those familiar with all the eras, it's ten gems in a row. And for those who still don't know that they really do love them all, it's kind of like a surprise greeting card sent from a distant relative, that spurs the thought-- we should really keep in touch.

Recced because: If you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, this will make you laugh and laugh. Even if you aren't a G&S fan (and why not, for heaven's sake?), this is still a witty and very funny story about multiple Doctors causing coat-related chaos for the composer and librettist. It's gloriously cracky-awesome fun, and is absolutely hysterical, with an amazing selection of mad-but-plausible reasons for the weddings. Warnings: Pokes fun at both characters but in a loving way. Really.

Recced because: I think I said in my rec yesterday that I'm usually not all that into Doctor/Rose ships. Well, I may have been fudging the truth just a tiny little bit because there is one Doctor/Rose ship that I ship quite hard and that is First Doctor/Rose, known far and wide by its portmanteau ship name Onose (which is of course pronounced like O NOES—we Onose shippers tend to be silly sorts sometimes.) Sadly there doesn't seem to be very many Onose fics that have been written, but the upside is that they all seem to be quite good. Concatenation especially always brings a smile to my face. It's very silly and light-hearted and there are days when you just need something like that.

Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None
Word Count: 7,881

Recced because: Ponygirl has an amazing gift for storytelling, and the tense but careful pacing of a longer story showcases this brilliantly. Her characterisation of each of the Doctors is flawless, but it's her interpretation of Martha that steals the show - even the most contradictory facets of her character come together for her terrifying and wonderful exploration of the Doctor's mind, of the Time War, and of everything that came after. While this may seem like a been-there-done-that scenario, the author admirably accomplishes the "Made New" part of the challenge, and the fic as a whole feels beautifully mysterious and different and unknown, and, more than that, it feels real and true to each character.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1010
Author's summary: The rebel becomes the activist. The activist becomes the recluse. The recluse becomes the renegade.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/Susan's Grandmother, Susan's Mother, Susan
Warnings: There's the potentially confusing factor of two characters sharing the same name (though it's easily figured out by context.)

Recced because: We don't really know much about the Doctor's life before he stole the TARDIS from Gallifrey. Oh, canon itself gives us the odd off-hand remark about the Doctors youth--the daisiest daisy and Roentgen blocks, such things are theories made of--but there's really not all that much that's concrete. Really, all we know is that Susan must have had parents once and so the Doctor must have once had a child and that child must have once had a mother (or another father.)

In Ten First Times, Alienist does a credible job of filling in the blanks of the Doctor's first few centuries and the life she creates for him feels very true. The prose is simple, spare, and affecting. By the end it's very easy to understand why the Doctor left.

It's a fantastic book, and a fantastic hook for a fic, and we see the options – what could have been, the slight alteration, the smudge of ink, the wedding ring. As always, this Ian is strong, moral, funny, and in love with Barbara through all his iterations. Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Susan, First Doctor/Evelyn Smythe, Barbara, Ian
Warnings: Implied sexual assualt (offscreen) and some violence.

Recced because: It's a clever, engaging, well-written story about a less appreciated Doctor.

A word about the Sixth Doctor... )

In ponygirl's “Fear and Freedom,” Evelyn and the Doctor have arrived in the dystopian near future: America of the mid-twenty-first century. What they don't expect, however, is that they aren't the only Doctor and companion involved in events—Susan, Barbara, Ian and the First Doctor are here too and things are about to get a bit more complicated, given that Susan and the Sixth Doctor have both been arrested and sent to a processing center.

Ponygirl's character voices are immensely well-done. The reunion of the Sixth Doctor with Susan is touching and the flirtation between Evelyn and the First Doctor is really quite sweet. I'd recommend this fic to everyone—even if you aren't familiar with either era of the show, it's still a very good fic.

I loved it back when it was a series of commentfic in [livejournal.com profile] koshiroryuu's fic journal as part of her 1001 Whovian Nights project (she's up to ninety-eight last time I checked!) and I still love it today. I loved it so much so that I bugged [livejournal.com profile] koshiroryuu into posting it on Teaspoon just so that I could rec it here today.

It's multi-Doctor fic, which admittedly is one of my favourite genres in this fandom, but that's not the only reason I'm so very fond of it. I love it for the characterization. Koshiroryuu takes each of the classic telly Doctors that the Tenth Doctor and Martha run into and captures them perfectly: voice, mannerisms, and personality. I could hear the actors saying their dialogue. And she does this all in less than 4300 characters per Doctor. I'm quite impressed.

Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, the Doctor (1-10), Ace McShane, Donna Noble, Evelyn Smythe, Fitz Kreiner, Jack Harkness, Jamie McCrimmon, Other Character(s), Romana II, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Ian and Barbara deserve a perfectly lovely and smooth wedding, complete with affection, cake, peace, and presents. But Ten Times Trouble is like a real wedding, rolling everyone’s drunk uncle, interrupting brother, affectionate friends, and bickering relatives into ten incorrigible packages. This sweet, funny, and poignant story has more than a bit of appeal for almost every part of fandom.

Author's summary: On an out-of-the-way alien planet, Susan and her grandfather find someone they never thought they'd see again.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/the Rani, Susan
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,450 words

Recced because: This is frankly brilliant: it's hilarious and well-written, with a great plot, and also manages to get in all sorts of terrific little bits of fanon that I loved about Gallifrey, Time Lords, and that band of rogues the Doctor ran with. One and Susan meet up with Susan's granny once again, now ruling over a planet in exile, as imperious and brilliant as always. We get Susan backstory, the Rani causing Susan's interest in and stay on Earth, meeting people in the wrong order, some well-deserved (and tasteful!) getting it on for One, and I even enjoyed the reference to the Looms, for goodness' sake. Rassilon approves.

Author's summary: Marshellian Paston's Fifteenth Theorem of Time Travel states that any two persons travelling through time are slightly more likely to meet from a probabilistic standpoint, within a margin of error described by a hypercube with complex dimensions; Ian, Barbara and Sarah Jane Smith give Marshellian Paston something to write home about.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan, Luke Smith, First Doctor, Susan, Vicki, Third Doctor
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~7,700 words

Recced because: Epic and brilliant, this story spins out a non-linear adventure and love story for Ian and Barbara, and unexpectedly but beautifully, tells us about Sarah Jane, as well. There's UST, romance, a touch of sex, happiness, ever-afters, danger, and adventure galore – everything that happens in life, especially a life with the Doctor, all of it, the good and the bad. The guest stars are all perfectly used, and with some terrific lines: "It's enough to give anyone a headache," Harry said sympathetically. / "Oh, Ian's just easily baffled," said Barbara which made me laugh out loud, and "It's a lovely elbow," said Barbara politely. / "Thank you," Ian said. "But I have heard good things about certain other portions of my anatomy." which was too perfect – and sexy – for words, this is an absolute delight.

Author's Summary: To save her Doctor's future, Rose has to go back in time and meet all previous incarnations of the Timelord. There'll be danger, humour, romance and adventure!
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Doctor, All 10 Doctors
Warnings: N/A

Recced because: This is the first story in a series, but it's also my favourite. This is a Rose story where we see her strength and courage and conviction, and her stubborn drive to save the Doctor and the universe as she travels through the Doctor's life on her own. Yet this is also a Rose/Doctor story, where we see Rose meet her feelings head on where the Ninth and Tenth Doctors are concerned. I especially like this story because each meeting with each incarnation is unique yet still so similar - in almost every instance they end up running for their lives or being in mortal peril in some way. It's really great fun to read, and I think the author is completely right when they said 'There'll be danger, humour, romance and adventure!'.

Story: Flowers on Fire

Author's Summary: They burn, in the darkness and the light, circling round each other like binary stars just on the edge of nova. They both burn, but they do not burn the same. Theta, Koschei, and their successors.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's beautifully written, with an obvious affection for the Doctor and the Master and their long, twisted, ultimately tragic relationship. The language is economical, perfect, and lyrical. The story focuses on their youth, but touches upon their ensuing significant encounters, painting a poignant, painful picture of two powerful beings who could neither embrace nor escape each other.

Author's Summary: The stories they tell are not true; it travels in time as well as space. Steven and Dodo, and what wasn't.
Characters/Pairings: Dodo Chaplet, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a beautifully written look at some characters who don't get nearly enough fic about them. The writing is incredibly lyrical and precise, with not a word wasted or out of place. The characterisation of Steven is particularly good. The sweetness of the first section is balanced but not compromised by Steven's realisation in the second, which gives the story a real edge. It's a story that stays with you.

Author's summary: A junkyard and a goodbye and everything starts again.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1,300 words

Recced because: Beautiful and heartbreaking, this is a tremendous story, and not at all crackfic as the pairing might suggest. Rose is an old woman, now, and one who has always loved and been loved by the Doctor; she returns to him, at the beginning, and we get a fascinating look at the circularity of time, and the way endings can be a beginning too. Careful, gentle storytelling and lyrical writing are the icing on the cake; she is old and she has always been in love, Rose reflects, a great premise with top-notch execution.

Author's Summary: Barbara and Ian? Let's not kid ourselves. After life in the TARDIS, no one's that straight...
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, Barbara/Susan, Ian/One, Ian/m, Barbara/f
Warnings: potential underage squick

Recced because: despite my firm belief that Ian and Barbara got married and are still somewhere in London, perfectly contented, VMG writes a disastrous sex scene between them which manages to be hilarious, sweet, and utterly convincing.  This is a story about the impossibility of simply coming home again after travelling on the TARDIS.  Ian and Barbara love one another, but that's not always enough, and both find themselves resorting to fairly desperate measures under the strictures of 60s society to fill the gaps.

It's not the most comfortable read: this isn't intended as 'hawt pron' by any stretch, and the swirling time structure is a little hard to follow in places.  But it's a thought-provoking piece, the dialogue is absolutely spot-on, and the closing paragraphs are just plain beautiful.
