Hello Calufrax! It’s been three years since I’ve recced here, so I thought it was time for another go-round.

Story: Places of Safety
Author: Paranoid Seat
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2103
Author’s Summary: Erimem finds the most joy inside the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Peri/Erimem
Warnings: none

Recced because: This story has such a great feel to it. The prompts for this story were “secret spaces” and “touch is the revolution”, and exploring these concepts through Erimem and her relationship with Peri is perfect. I’ve only heard two Erimem stories but her voice here sounds just right, and I adored this Peri. A great character study for an underexplored pairing.

Story: Pointed
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 657
Author's Summary: Every now and then, her thief stops taking gentle hints.
Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown, The Doctor (6th), The TARDIS
Warnings: General, Humor, Vignette

Recced because: I have a special love for Six. There aren't many who share that love, but those of us that do know where to find our Six!Fix - and this author always delivers. She is highly popular (and oft recced) for a very, very good reason. She KNOWS the Doctors through and through - and Six is no exception. She gets the joke of it all and brings it to the fic-table with a flourish that leaves me dry-mouthed with envy and wanting more despite my jealousy. Her Six is everything we see and then some: dry, brassy, loud, uncompromising, witty and quick-tempered. But he is also THE DOCTOR and she shows that with a humorous pen that has no rival. This is a tale about a Thief and his Blue Box - and how She would like to remain a Blue Box thank-you-very-much. A delightful tongue-in-cheek fiction that shows the Doctor knows more than he reveals and that his Machine knows (and loves him) even better than that. Though...he really needs to ask HER before deciding certain things.

Story: A Bad Habit (The Master Never Learns Remix)
Author: rynne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,605
Author's Summary: The Master and the Doctor usually manage to understand each other, no matter how many situations they get themselves into.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Peri Brown, various versions of the Doctor and the Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Remixes are one of my favorite things in fandom. If you're not familiar, they're basically fanfics of other fanfics - taking someone else's work and giving it a new spin, a new perspective, or expanding it somehow. In this fic, Rynne started with A Bad Habit by Hokuto, which is a fun short piece about the Doctor and the Master working together, and expanded that idea into a series of confrontations and cooperative moments between the Doctor and the Master. I think the story succeeds both as a good example of a remix and as a good fic that can stand on its own.

Author's Summary: They're both the heroes of this story.
Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown/Mel Bush
Warnings: None.

Recced because: in my bookmarks, my notes section for this fic just says 'Lesbian Space Pirates!' I guess I... thought that was enough? I mean, it's enough for me. In case you need more: this fic is a fun and enthusiastic take on two characters that weren't always best served by their scripts or by the fandom. Mel and Peri really shine in this fic, and it's great to see them together, having adventures all their own.

Recced because: Lyricwritesprose gets recced here a lot, and there's a reason for that. Story: Strain
Author: golden orange
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1312
Author's Summary: "Peri is infected with the dreaded alien sex pollen. This makes things between her and the Doctor uncomfortable. Alright, MORE uncomfortable."
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Peri
Warnings: None

Recced because: What was it about Six and Peri? The poor girl could never do anything right by him, especially when she actually was right. But when the bickering's good, it's like some kind of proto-Jerry Springer situation - utterly addictive. You can't leave, let alone look away; you must see this argument through to the end. Someone pass me the popcorn! Let's take bets on who'll throw the first chair!

This fic captures Six and Peri exquisitely - they're at the top of their already very fine bickering form, and placed in a trope-tastic situation from which thousands of characters before them haven't managed to escape the inevitable. And yet... Well, I don't want to ruin the surprise - go read it for yourself!

Excerpt:

“This is all your fault,” Peri Brown snapped waspishly. A close observer would note that she appeared remarkably fidgety, and appeared to be crossing and uncrossing her legs with remarkable frequency. She seemed to have some difficulty in remaining settled in her seat. She was brushing at the skin of her arm, as if she had an itch, but the same close observer would see that her hand appeared to be stroking her skin rather than scratching it.

The Doctor spun around from the TARDIS console in a flurry of brightly coloured coat tails and moral outrage. “My fault?!” he repeated incredulously. “And who was it, I wonder, who warned you to stay away from those flower beds in the first place? It’s not my fault that you allowed your otherwise laudable botanical curiosity to overrule your good senses and reject my as-it-turns-out remarkably sound advice!”

“Yeah, you warned me -- right before you pushed me into them!”

Story: Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6755
Author's Summary: It was irritating enough having to deal with one Doctor; Peri didn't think she'd have to deal with two. Or have to deal with herself, an other self, a different self. She stared at the other Peri, with her one hoop earring, her biker boots, and her Bowie knife. Okay, that was just weird.
Characters/Pairings: Six, Peri, AU!Six, AU!Peri
Warnings: None

Recced because: Betawho has a great Peri voice and has her and Six's dynamic down pat; plus, this story showcases an interesting take on regeneration, an original planet that I'd love to visit, and two fascinating character studies. However, none of those things are the reason I'm reccing this.

I'm reccing this story for its very last line.

You'll know why when you read it.

Excerpt:

Sunlight dappled the dales and fields below, glinting off the rippling river. Meadows were a virtual jubilation of flowers, reds and purples and yellows. She'd much prefer to be down there collecting specimens, she'd seen some interesting looking brassica and bassilicum, rather than up here where she was likely to get snakebit or buried in an avalanche.

"What's the problem?" She turned her face up at that familiar impatient voice. Yellow trouser legs led up to his golden backlit explosion of hair. She shaded her eyes.

"I just thought I'd take a moment to compose my will before I fall down the mountain and die."

Story: The Secret Origin of the Phantasmagoria Anomalistic Coat
Author: Steve61
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3502 Words
Author's Summary: Peri learns why the Doctor wears his unusual multi-coloured coat.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Peri
Warnings: None
Recced because: If there's anything which makes a Sixth Doctor and Peri story fun it's when Six sounds egoy enough and Peri's has the right level of snark and charm when it comes to her talks with the Doctor. Six and Peri is one of my favourite TARDIS crews for this pretty much alone and its in full force here when the Doctor takes Peri to a world to answer the question - is there anywhere in the universe where his coat would be fashionable? The short answer is yes, the long answer... well you'll see!

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: Distances
Author: Levendis
Rating: All Ages

Author's Summary: Running fast to stand still, or the more things change the more they stay the same, or a series of vignettes about fish and possible nows.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Adric, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Tegan Jovanka, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a fic about the Doctor - all of him, the essence of him. It is a series of vignettes, but they are unsorted and sort of higgledy-piggledy, consisting of briefly captured moments (or lifetimes), and most of the time it takes a few lines, or even paragraphs, before it’s possible to put a face, a time, a context, a ‘number’ to the Doctor in question. This disorientation works beautifully to highlight how he truly is the same man, how who he was/is/will be is all part of one continuous story. Some parts are sad, some happy; others funny, or profound, or deeply touching. But above all, this fic reminds me that the Doctor just is.

Characters/Pairings: Five, Peri
Warnings: Five explains cricket.

Recced because:

After four years this fic still makes me giggle. It’s also the first thing I think of whenever anyone, for whatever reason, mentions cricket. Oh! And it has some hidden Hitch Hiker’s references for extra bonus points.

Excerpt:

“That’s not a very fair thing to say! Besides, baseball is everywhere in America, and how different could cricket be? You hit a ball with something wooden and run in a circle. Right?”

“So why bother asking about it?”

“Well, I’m curious.”

“Alright. But....you won’t get it.” he sighed resignedly.

Characters: Ian, Barbara, Peri, the 6th Doctor, a pack of brats and a couple of monsters with tentacles.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's funny as hell! Spot-on characterization as well. A well-written charmer from beginning to end.

“It could be him,” said Ian as they hesitated at the entrance. “It’s incredible, but you know how he is — was.”

She remained stubborn, merely giving a small shake of her head and then she put a hand to the TARDIS. “Ian, I don’t think I can. Not again -.”

“Well, either that, or we have to explain how we lost a dozen children on a field trip,” he said. “And while to lose one child might be counted a misfortune, to lose twelve -!”

Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Doctors 1-11 plus companions
Warnings:. None

Recced because: This is the best explanation I’ve read so far for Amy’s personality and how the twelve years of waiting affected her. The story is extremely funny, and could almost be considered crack!fic, except that the Doctors are all perfectly in character, and their encounters with Amy seem wonderfully plausible.

Story: Five Times the Doctor Got in the Way of Captain Janeway (and One Time They Got Along Just Fine)

Author: vvj5

Rating: All ages

Word Count: 5,526

Author's Summary: Captain Janeway doesn't think much of time travellers and higher beings who turn up on board her ship.  The Doctor doesn't take much notice of prime directives.  It's a tea/coffee thing.

Characters/Pairings: Doctors One, Three, Six, Eight, Nine & Eleven; Vicki, Jo, Peri, Charley, Captain Janeway, various Voyager crew members

Warnings: None

Recced because:

This week I’m trying to rec mainly authors who haven’t been recced here before, but since this bit of crossover fun merges my two favorite SciFi fandoms it caught my eye.  The Doctors and companions are all spot-on, and so are Captain Janeway and her crew.  It’s always fun to see someone interacting with multiple Doctors, especially when it’s non-linear.

Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Author's Summary: Five times the fifth Doctor was alone with one of his companions, each time after losing someone else.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri
Warnings: References to character death

Recced because: The Fifth Doctor traveled with a lot of companions, and he traveled with a lot of companions who also traveled with each other. But no one travels with the Doctor forever. In a series of vignettes, this fic explores each companion's reaction to the loss of someone, and in so doing, explores how each companion sees his or her own relationship to the Doctor. Taken individually, the vignettes are a wonderful series of character studies; added together, they are a study on the Doctor himself, and an insightful look into the Doctor/companion relationship.

Author's summary: Peri teaches the Doctor about a new holiday.
Characters: Six, Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: The Sixth Doctor and Peri both seem to rank near the bottom of the fandom's list of favorite characters, and I love that this sweet little story takes what we saw on screen and transforms it. Neither of the characters are unrecognizable, but somehow they feel right. Peri is smart and independent and absolutely knows how to handle the Doctor. The Doctor, for his part, is all brash and bold, but genuinely cares about Peri. It's a great look at how these two can be a brilliant match for one another.

Word Count: 2099
Author's Summary: The Doctor takes Peri on holiday to Devon, except it isn't Devon: it's Strathclyde.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Donna Noble, Peri Brown, Wilfred Mott
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Written for the 2009 Sixathon (the challenge being ‘all the companions’), the Doctor contemplates a red-headed six-year-old companion before we ever saw or heard of wee!Amelia - her name's Donna Noble. The interactions between the two (and Peri) are lovely, with the voices spot on, as are Wilfred’s proud grandfatherly reactions at the end. And debating the rights and wrongs of kidnapping a six-year-old, arguing about whether the Doctor might be a clown or a superhero, and Donna's reason for being in Strathclyde - it's brilliant, and funny, and clever. And there’s a bright pink hat. Possibly a planet of the hats, as well, but that’s for another day. What more could you want?

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen

Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

Characters/Pairings: Six, Erimem, Peri, Frobisher, Iris, Mel, Evelyn, Charley (and Eight).
Warning: Spoilers for 'The Bride of Peladon'.

Recced because: It's a beautiful thing, built around a very simple prompt - Six gets Erimem a new cat. This he does, and there's clearly a great kinship between this Doctor and the cat (Five was not so fond of them) and that's great, but eve11 doesn't leave it at just that. Instead, Erimem lives out her life on the slow path and Six shows up with all his companions at various times in her life, and each meting shows us something different about Erimem, who is living her life very well without the Doctor - which is something else to be glad of. I must also admit that anything with Frobisher and/or Iris in it, and done well, is likely to bring me great joy. And this does - though, unlike anything else I've recced - it is somewhat bittersweet.

Netgirl combines the Rani's wryness with Peri's naïve abrasiveness to get great chemistry, and then proceeds to give a series of swift peeks at a magnificent show we never got but that I'd watch in a heartbeat. And there are, most importantly, giant bees.

Recced because: The Doctor takes Ian for one last ride in the TARDIS. Never mind that Ian doesn't want one last ride in the TARDIS.

Backwards Traveller does such a beautiful job of showing what home has come to mean for Ian. I love fics that put a companion who's left and made his or her life next to a companion who's still aboard the TARDIS, still unfixed, because the contrast always seems to make them both seem more real. And everybody's so entirely, marvelously themselves here, especially the Doctor.

Characters/Pairings: Five/Peri/Erimem
Warnings: Graphic sex

Recced because: The Fifth Doctor's modesty is spot on. It's brilliant to read Peri and Erimem slowly breaking down the Doctor's barriers. Not a word is wasted in this not so little gem.

Story: Bitter Laughter, Bitter Tears
Author: amaresu
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 764
Author's Summary: The drunken ramblings of Peri Brown and Adam Mitchell.
Characters/Pairings: Peri, Adam Mitchell (Peri/Adam?)
Warnings: A couple of swear words, but that's all.

Recced because: Again, [livejournal.com profile] amaresu is one of the writers whom I've loved everything that I've read by them. Bitter Laughter, Bitter Tears presents a lovely version of Peri who has escaped her fate at the end of 'Mindwarp' and teams her up with Adam Mitchell. [livejournal.com profile] amaresu's Adam Mitchell made me feel an incredible amount of sympathy for a character I'd never thought much of. Marvellous stuff.

Story: Love Has Many Shapes
Author: Darkerchild
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1,261
Author's summary: Frobisher/Peri, true love inside Six, who has inexplicably transformed into a 1968 Chevrolet Sportvan.
No, but really: Yes. Really.
Characters/pairings: Frobisher/Peri, Peri/Six, and arguably, in some sense Six/Frobisher. It's hard to tell.
Warnings:

Recced because: Because of the crack. Oh, God, the crack. Crack, and a pretty damned fantastic Frobisher characterization.

You have to understand: It's fairly difficult to break my brain with words alone, these days. But Darkerchild is somehow able to hit just the right note with this piece to do it, like somebody finding the resonance point and breaking glasses into itty-bitty pieces. It's the use of Frobisher's voice that allows her (or him) to do it, I think. Let's face it, Frobisher is the only character who could possibly guide us through a scenario like that.

Weirdly enough, this isn't exactly a humor piece. I think that's part of what makes it work, actually. In any case, it's a bit of surrealism rarely matched even in a fandom that practically invites it, and if you, like me, can't resist that sort of thing, the Doctor as a '68 Chevrolet Sportvan is for you.

Just a note: Having some familiarity with Frobisher would probably improve this story, to be sure. However, the author also manages to exploit the scenario to give enough information about who and what he is for the uninitiated to enjoy.

Story: On the Study of Shatter-Resistant Materials
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3071
Author's Summary: Peri's grandmother gave her a different doll every year on her birthday.
Characters/Pairings: Six, Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: This fic might just be the most justice Peri has ever gotten in or out of canon. Peri, I realize, is not everybody's cup of tea, or even most people's so far as I can tell. Hut I think that this fic, as beautifully written as it is, would be rewarding to both her fans and her detractors, because it nails everything about her that I love.

It does the same for her prickly relationship with Doctor number six, showcasing both their friendship and their friction in a way that makes them both sympathetic. There's a lot in this beautiful little study that's heartbreaking—often in a mundane, real, everyday way—but a lot that's hopeful woven into it, for both the Doctor and for Peri.

All that, and a freaky alien planet, to boot.

Story: Dance With Me
Author: finmagik
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 767
Author's Summary: Peri and The Doctor go to a club, and Peri ends up dancing with a stranger or is he as strange as he seems?
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Peri, Tenth Doctor.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I'm a sucker for well written fluff. I'm also a sucker for well written Peri. Put the two together and you've won me over already! Six/Peri fluff is very rare because Six doesn't lend himself well to fluff however, Dance With Me is completely believable. Finmagik has got the characterisations of Six, Ten and Peri spot on, showing that Six does have a softer side, even if he rarely shows it.

Story: Christmas in George Square
Author: Paranoid Seat
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 947
Author's Summary: During a seemingly quiet visit to Scotland, Peri takes the opportunity to introduce Erimem to a new experience.
Characters/Pairings: Peri/Erimem, Fifth Doctor.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Since there is at least 12 inches of snow outside, I thought this would be quite appropriate. There are very few Peri/Erimem fics out there, and this is one of the best. It is a wonderful fluffy story where Peri introduces Erimem to certain Christmas traditions. Its a well written, femslash story which makes casual references to the audio series. The characterisation of Peri and Erimem is spot on. It leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy inside!

Story: A Cuddle for a Dalek
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spastasmagoria
Rating: All-Ages
Word Count: 1697
Author's Summary: There's only one thing the deranged dustbin wants in all the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Peri, Ace, Rose, Mickey, Jack, Gwen, Future!Doctor, and a Dalek.
Warnings: Silliness

This one is a wonderfully humorous multi-era romp, all centered around a Dalek (capable of a "temporal shift of infinite sadness") that just wants a hug. Particularly amusing are the reactions of Peri and Ace, but every scene is quite brilliant (including the small hints about the fashion sense of the future!Doctor).

Story: Perennials
Author: [livejournal.com profile] koshiroryuu
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 343
Author's Summary: Just an average springtime day for the Doctor and Peri.
Characters/Pairings: Six and Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: I love entirely dialogue stories, and this one is pitch-perfect. It's a short one, from [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000, but the tone and character voices are flawless for a Six and Peri-era scene. I especially like how it plays up Peri's knowledge of botany. A fun quick read.

Story: Within the Realm of Possibility
Author: koshiroryuu
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1200
Author's summary: For every unexplained disappearance, there's always someone, somewhere, somewhen, who knows what really happened.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Peri, Prince Richard, Prince Edward, Tenth Doctor, Anastasia Romanov, Fourth Doctor/Stephen Fry, Uemura Naomi, Second Doctor, Jamie, Humphrey, Virginia Dare
Warnings: tastefully hints at fictional person/real person type slash (F/RPS?)

Recced because: In this series of six double drabbles, we have six mysterious disappearances from real life explained through Doctor Who. It's a fascinating concept and one I'm surprised we don't see more often in fanfic. Koshiroryuu's character voices are spot on as always and her mastery of the strict two-hundred-word format is precise and enviable.

Author: Gillian Taylor ([livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis) and WMR ([livejournal.com profile] wendymr)
Rating: None given; all ages
Word Count: 1285
Author's Summary: Because sometimes he needs someone to stop him. Crack!fic ahoy.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, Ace McShane, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Madame de Pompadour, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Peri Brown, Pete Tyler, Romana II, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None given, very mild violence?

Recced because: Needs someone to stop him? Needs someone to smack him, perhaps! The companions step up to the task. For crack!fic vignettes, it has a lovely progression to a laugh-out-loud punchline.

Title: Five Phone Calls the Doctor Never Received
Author: the_seventh_l
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2749
Author's Summary: He knew buying a mobile was a mistake. Five phone calls across the years that make up the Sixth Doctor's life.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Peri Brown, Mel Bush, Others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a refreshingly original take on the old "five things" format, drawing on bits and pieces of the Sixth Doctor's era and quietly solving the little mysteries that arise. It's also one of those rare fics that can bring in characters from other fandoms without a jolt - and despite all these disparate elements, the author draws them together nicely with the running motif of the phone itself. A fun, fascinating, and surprisingly poignant look at the Sixth Doctor's era.

I'm rounding off my Big Finish week with a rec for Mel and one for Peri. Big Finish may not have created them, but they've done some rather wonderful things with them.

Story:A Trump Lead
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2787
Author's Summary: The Doctor treats Mel to a lesson in probabilities and card play.
Characters/Pairings: Mel, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: please None

Recced because: This shows the way in which Mel and Seven interacted together wonderfully. The story starts off with Mel angry at the Doctor, for a number of things, but mainly because people died and he wouldn't go back and save them. Through explaining the game of Bridge to her Seven explains about changing the past. It's a beautifully written allegory.

Story: The Sky Was Good For Flying
Author: Doyle
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1883
Author's Summary: The Doctor trespasses on a royal garden and meets someone he didn’t expect to ever see again.
Characters/Pairings: Peri, Sixth Doctor
Warnings: Just for how Peri left the Doctor

Recced because: TV canon leaves what happens to Peri up in the air. There are two conflicting stories, both from unreliable sources. Doyle makes a future for Peri that is wonderful and exactly what she deserves. Also the Sixth Doctor gets resolution in the matter as well.
