Recced because: Well this one's just lovely. Touching, and sad, and a it painful, but lovely. A collection of moments, from both Old and New Who, that make you want to slap the Doctor and hug him all at the same time. And most importantly, catches the very essence of the Doctor in such a beautiful manner.

Story: Walks Through Walls
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3996
Author's Summary: "Just remember, Doctor. In the midst of the whirlwind, Peladon will always welcome you."
Characters/Pairings: Six, Erimem, Peri, Frobisher, Iris, Mel, Evelyn, Charley (and Eight).
Warning: Spoilers for 'The Bride of Peladon'.

Recced because: It's a beautiful thing, built around a very simple prompt - Six gets Erimem a new cat. This he does, and there's clearly a great kinship between this Doctor and the cat (Five was not so fond of them) and that's great, but eve11 doesn't leave it at just that. Instead, Erimem lives out her life on the slow path and Six shows up with all his companions at various times in her life, and each meting shows us something different about Erimem, who is living her life very well without the Doctor - which is something else to be glad of. I must also admit that anything with Frobisher and/or Iris in it, and done well, is likely to bring me great joy. And this does - though, unlike anything else I've recced - it is somewhat bittersweet.

Recced because:

The Doctor’s life has never been an easy one. There have been loses and sacrifices every step of the way – and gains, at the same time. This is a concise history, economical, and pulsing with everything that makes the Doctor the Doctor across all of his incarnations, in the face of any loss or confrontation:

The faith and love he shows his companions, his sorrow when he must let them go, and the regret when cannot save them.

Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown/the Rani
Warnings: AU

Recced because: It's just a brilliantly fun romp. In an alternate universe somewhere, Peri Brown isn't romantically saved from drowning by Vislor Turlough—she's romantically saved by the Rani, instead. All for the cause of science, of course.

Netgirl combines the Rani's wryness with Peri's naïve abrasiveness to get great chemistry, and then proceeds to give a series of swift peeks at a magnificent show we never got but that I'd watch in a heartbeat. And there are, most importantly, giant bees.

Author's Summary: The Doctor encounters an old companion who prefers to leave his past where it belongs.
Characters/Pairings: Ian, Peri, Six
Warnings: none

Recced because: The Doctor takes Ian for one last ride in the TARDIS. Never mind that Ian doesn't want one last ride in the TARDIS.

Backwards Traveller does such a beautiful job of showing what home has come to mean for Ian. I love fics that put a companion who's left and made his or her life next to a companion who's still aboard the TARDIS, still unfixed, because the contrast always seems to make them both seem more real. And everybody's so entirely, marvelously themselves here, especially the Doctor.

Recced because: Six and Peri are a much underrated Team TARDIS that doesn't get written well nearly often enough. Between their first and second season they seem to become much more familiar and fond of each other. This story fits nicely in the interim and is an excellently written example of their relationship, and a plausible way that it could have developed.

Recced Because: Colin Baker has described his doctor as the "cat who walks by himself", and in this story, DameRuth shows just how appropriate that really is. This is an absolutely wonderful character study of the sixth Doctor, with all his feline qualities. And with the story from Peri's perspective, we're offered a refreshing view of her actually figuring a few things out. Peri does have a brain in her head, and this story shows that nicely.

Recced because: This story almost leaves me breathless in admiration every time I read it. It’s such a perfect summing up of Six and Peri‘s relationship with all its contradictions and complications. Not only that, but it’s so vividly written I can see and hear and all but touch everything and there’s a brief but excellently drawn alien race in the background. It’s also one of the best introductions I could think of to this TARDIS team, so don’t ignore it if you’re a stranger to Six and Peri. It's a polished gem of a fic.

Author's summary: Frobisher/Peri, true love inside Six, who has inexplicably transformed into a 1968 Chevrolet Sportvan.
No, but really: Yes. Really.
Characters/pairings: Frobisher/Peri, Peri/Six, and arguably, in some sense Six/Frobisher. It's hard to tell.
Warnings:

Recced because: Because of the crack. Oh, God, the crack. Crack, and a pretty damned fantastic Frobisher characterization.

You have to understand: It's fairly difficult to break my brain with words alone, these days. But Darkerchild is somehow able to hit just the right note with this piece to do it, like somebody finding the resonance point and breaking glasses into itty-bitty pieces. It's the use of Frobisher's voice that allows her (or him) to do it, I think. Let's face it, Frobisher is the only character who could possibly guide us through a scenario like that.

Weirdly enough, this isn't exactly a humor piece. I think that's part of what makes it work, actually. In any case, it's a bit of surrealism rarely matched even in a fandom that practically invites it, and if you, like me, can't resist that sort of thing, the Doctor as a '68 Chevrolet Sportvan is for you.

Just a note: Having some familiarity with Frobisher would probably improve this story, to be sure. However, the author also manages to exploit the scenario to give enough information about who and what he is for the uninitiated to enjoy.

Author's Summary: Peri's grandmother gave her a different doll every year on her birthday.
Characters/Pairings: Six, Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: This fic might just be the most justice Peri has ever gotten in or out of canon. Peri, I realize, is not everybody's cup of tea, or even most people's so far as I can tell. Hut I think that this fic, as beautifully written as it is, would be rewarding to both her fans and her detractors, because it nails everything about her that I love.

It does the same for her prickly relationship with Doctor number six, showcasing both their friendship and their friction in a way that makes them both sympathetic. There's a lot in this beautiful little study that's heartbreaking—often in a mundane, real, everyday way—but a lot that's hopeful woven into it, for both the Doctor and for Peri.

All that, and a freaky alien planet, to boot.

Six/Peri fluff is very rare because Six doesn't lend himself well to fluff however, Dance With Me is completely believable. Recced because: Since there is at least 12 inches of snow outside, I thought this would be quite appropriate. There are very few Peri/Erimem fics out there, and this is one of the best. It is a wonderful fluffy story where Peri introduces Erimem to certain Christmas traditions. Its a well written, femslash story which makes casual references to the audio series. This one is a wonderfully humorous multi-era romp, all centered around a Dalek (capable of a "temporal shift of infinite sadness") that just wants a hug. Recced because: In this series of six double drabbles, we have six mysterious disappearances from real life explained through Doctor Who. It's a fascinating concept and one I'm surprised we don't see more often in fanfic. Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Peri Brown, Mel Bush, Others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a refreshingly original take on the old "five things" format, drawing on bits and pieces of the Sixth Doctor's era and quietly solving the little mysteries that arise. It's also one of those rare fics that can bring in characters from other fandoms without a jolt - and despite all these disparate elements, the author draws them together nicely with the running motif of the phone itself. A fun, fascinating, and surprisingly poignant look at the Sixth Doctor's era.

Word Count: 2787
Author's Summary: The Doctor treats Mel to a lesson in probabilities and card play.
Characters/Pairings: Mel, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: please None

Recced because: This shows the way in which Mel and Seven interacted together wonderfully. The story starts off with Mel angry at the Doctor, for a number of things, but mainly because people died and he wouldn't go back and save them. Through explaining the game of Bridge to her Seven explains about changing the past. It's a beautifully written allegory.

Characters/Pairings: Peri, Sixth Doctor
Warnings: Just for how Peri left the Doctor

Recced because: TV canon leaves what happens to Peri up in the air. There are two conflicting stories, both from unreliable sources. Doyle makes a future for Peri that is wonderful and exactly what she deserves. Also the Sixth Doctor gets resolution in the matter as well.

Story: Bonsai
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: One, two, three: This never happened.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Peri
Warnings: explicit sex
Word Count: ~2,000 words

Recced because: This is an incredible piece: just beautifully written, thoughtful, and also really, unexpectedly, hot. The Doctor here is Seven to a T, and Peri comes across as very sympathetic, very real. This story goes into such depth in so few words about the universe the Doctor and his companions inhabit: the idea of needing vs. wanting, forgetting, remembering, and creating your own history. It's twisty and imaginative, and wraps up the good and the bad all together into one amazing, if at times somewhat deliciously uncomfortable, whole. It's a fabulous piece of work.

Recced because: I hadn't yet heard The Veiled Leopard the first time I read this story. I loved it anyway. Since then I've listened to Veiled Leopard four or five times, and I love this fic even more. It's just the kind of continuation I wish that audio really had had, throwing two of my favorite companion teams together and letting them getting to know each other. Recced because: In my opinion one the best things Big Finish has given us are the Fifth Doctor adventures with companions Peri and Erimem, and one the best of these audios is the laugh out loud funny The Kingmaker. This fic is a sweet and somber missing scene from that play. The character interactions are lovely, my favourite part is Peri and Erimem wondering what the Doctor would make of the new dimension to their relationship.

Recced because: The characterisation of Erimem is brilliant and her typically clear-eyed observations of herself and her friends are a joy. She's finding her feet and trying to work out how she fits in with the Doctor and Peri, deciding who she is now she's no longer a pharoah-in-training. She's learning to be brave in a world she never expected, and eponymous_rose conveys this beautifully. The plot is slight but entertaining, the villains are fun and it's told in a beautifully self aware way. And, appropriately for audio fic, I can hear the voices of the characters very strongly in my head as I read.

Some gorgeous characterizations - "It’s not as if I expected to walk into your—invisible spaceship, now, is it?” Harry retorted, nettled. “Now, look here, old chap, you can’t just leave things like this lying about where anyone could trip over them." - a mix of funny, insightful, and hot scenes, and a moment in UNIT's history that will keep me amused for the rest my life just picturing it all add up to an incredibly enjoyable fic.

Recced because: It's hilarious. Sometimes you just want to read something fun. First, though, despite the summary, this story is gen. Also, the Doctor and Peri don't really get married. Not exactly, anyway. What happens is that Peri commits a cultural faux pas, and she and the Doctor end up as "guests" of the planet's high priest, who has certain expectations of them. Peri and the Doctor, less than pleased with the situation, plot an escape. There's a lot of amusing banter along the way, plus some sweet bonding between Six and Peri. When well written, they make a great team.
