Bonsoir, Calufrax! [livejournal.com profile] doctorxdonna here (RoseByAnyOtherName on Teaspoon), I'm another one who encountered the Doctor through new Who, but I've been loving 'getting to know' him and his past though through the 1-8 stories that crop up here on Calufrax. I really and truly did mean to get to this recc yesterday, but I'm a retail manager and spent most of my time rocking back and forth in disbelief that I survived Black Friday weekend. Now I'm still riding the leftover high from the 50th Anniversary special, so I bring you this little gem from an author who'd never been recced here before. Enjoy!

Story: 5 Minutes Before the Wedding
Author: naiad8
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 715
Author's Summary: A conversation between the Doctor and the woman he's about to marry. She has her reasons.
Characters/Pairings: 10th Doctor and Queen Elizabeth I
Warnings: None

Recced because: How I wish the anniversary had played out a little more like naiad8's version of the story. History tends to speak of Queen Elizabeth I as a brilliant, pragmatic, and analytical woman, and I was a little sad to see them treat her a bit like just another girl with a crush. Here, Elizabeth reveals that her reasons for choosing to marry the Doctor when she'd eschewed so many suitors before him are motivated almost entirely by logic.

My final rec for these two weeks! Thanks for bearing with me, especially through the bonus anniversary recs, and I hope you found something new to read. And if you did, don’t forget to feed the authors – love and comments make the world go round (or something like that).

Story: days that should have been
Author: lyricalprose
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1584
Author's Summary: He tries not to go back to the places he took Susan. (Or, the Doctor and memory – things remembered, and things forgotten).
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswin Oswald
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a beautifully written fic that’s the perfect blend of old and new. The Doctor now, and at the beginning, Susan and the TARDIS, and his most recent companions, tracing parallels and spaces between them, and memory and forgetting. As I said, it’s really beautiful and a lovely reminder of how this one sprawling series does all connect up in the end.

Story: A Perfect Heart
Author: Mandragora
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1033
Author's Summary: The story of a Queen, a curse and a perfect love.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s something out of the usual run of fics and it’s gorgeous, with an excellently done Seven and Ace, together in the snow – and an enigmatic fairy tale that may or may not be only a story. But then, there’s no such thing as “only a story”, is there?

Story: It Doesn’t Go “Ding” When There’s Stuff
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 313
Author's Summary: The Tenth Doctor tries out his new Zygon detector.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was trying not to rec this recent little gem – I had a full list of recs already! It came about due to something I said! – but then realised that of course that was foolish and that I needed to share this delightful, funny fic (that is clearly and obviously a missing scene from The Day of the Doctor that merely had to be deleted due to the constraints of time and reality). Anyway, as it happens, what I said was that the special was lacking in penguins. This is no longer the case, and isn’t it marvellous?

Hopefully, we've all recovered from the anniversary, so I'm back with my regular recs now...

Story: I’ll have to come to you
Author: honeynoir
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1670
Author's Summary: The Doctor maps Clara's lives and learns that she can still surprise him. Oh, and there are Daleks. / 'She was his big friendly button, his reset after the dark days.'
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswin Oswald, Twelfth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a beautiful look at the Doctor and Clara, in the past and the future, with wonderfully fractured glimpses of her many lives, and the confusion of it for the Doctor. It explores some of the consequences of that, but lightly, and not without humour and there's sharp characterisation in the short snatches that comprise the whole that is the story. It’s lovely.

Story: Starlight
Author: agapi42
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 129
Author's Summary: Stargazing by starlight.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings:None

Recced because: Where else to end these bonus recs, but to come back to the beginning? And this is a beautiful fic-in-miniature, full of love, wonder and hope (and, yes, starlight), not unlike the show itself - sometimes, at least.

Story: Five Minutes / Bognor Blues
Author: padawanpooh
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 214
Author's Summary: Two Seven/Ace drabbles written for the Livejournal DW100 comm
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings: None

Recced because: A pair of drabbles that perfectly capture Seven and Ace and their relationship in a few, well-chosen words – one the darker side, the other the lighter. Or both together, perhaps. And Seven and Ace being awesome as ever, of course, because they are.

Author's Summary: The Doctor and Mel discover a strange sort of exercise regime.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Mel Bush
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It wouldn’t be Doctor Who without a lot of running, would it? And this is one of the most entertaining Doctor Who ficlets I know about running – and about companions getting to be sneaky and awesome. It’s just wonderful and guaranteed to make you grin.

Author's Summary: The Fifith Doctor seems to have trouble hanging on to useful gadgets. In this story, another item goes the way of the sonic screwdriver.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Somehow this morning feels like exactly the moment for a bit of humour and Fifth Doctor-love, and, funnily enough, I had this already lined up to rec, and it’s a little gem. You see, Five just can’t get away with things the way his future selves will…

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 101
Author's Summary: The Ninth Doctor muses on the nature of freedom. Drabble.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a bitter, brilliant little look at the Doctor’s life at this point and the costs of finally achieving your goal. And again, a lovely example of just how much 100 words can do.

Story: To Any Watch They Keep
Author: infiniteviking
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: History is a grim business, and Victoria is getting fed up.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield, Second Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Two, Victoria, history, time travel and hope – it’s one of those drabbles that prove how much 100 words can be worth and in many ways it’s also a quiet stating of the series’ ethos.

The Fiftieth anniversary is upon us, and [livejournal.com profile] calufrax is celebrating with some bonus recs - I'm reccing a drabble or brief ficlet for each Doctor in honour of the show's special day. (I will, however, be spreading them out as much as I can over the weekend, so hopefully I won't spam your flists too much - but, after all, there will never be another fiftieth anniversary for the show - something had to be done!)

And so, going through the Doctors in no particular order, let's start now with Eight...

Story: Symbiosis
Author: Calapine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 443
Author's Summary: He is never alone.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The Doctor and the TARDIS and their unique relationship in a beautiful, terse piece. Where better to start the anniversary but with the Ship and her Thief, travelling together through the vortex?

Story: An Infinite Number of Roads to Dallas
Author: EllieLaBelle
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1937
Author's Summary: This is a Doctor Who/Red Dwarf crossover. Twistedskein on LJ pointed out that the Doctor was spotted at the assassination of JFK, and that the crew of Starbug also visit Dallas in 1963 while looking for the world's largest takeaway order.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Ninth Doctor, Various Other Characters
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a whole heap of fun! Apparently, there are just some points in time that attract all the travellers in the fourth dimension, like tacky tourist hot-spots, and Dallas, 1963 is one of them. You needn’t worry too much about the crossover element – it’s that concept and spotting the nods to yet more time travellers that is the joy of this humorous fic, plus the great description of time-space at the start (very New Who, and very Red Dwarf in itself). Grab your time machine of choice and join in…

Story: Time Delay
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1324
Author's Summary: "You're forty years late, Doctor."
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Third Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The Doctor finally comes back to offer Liz a trip in his TARDIS – forty years late, but what do details like that matter between old friends? This is a lovely, quiet look at both characters. Liz is still her recognisably brilliant and snarky self, the Doctor’s come to make up for lost time, and neither of them are too old for friendship, or another adventure together. As I’ve already said, it really is just lovely. Go read it – you won’t regret it.

Hello, [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! In a fit of muddle-headedness, I forgot to introduce myself yesterday (sorry!), but what’s a little non-linearity in this fandom? Anyway, I’m [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook (vvj5 on Teaspoon), and I’m your reccer for the next two weeks, steering us over the upcoming anniversary weekend (with some extra recs, gosh). I’m still very much in love with all eras of our favourite 50 year old TV series, so hopefully there’ll be something for everyone at some point along the way. And now, in terms of recs, I think I could honestly say I’m going from the sublime to the ridiculous here, so let’s waste no more time in idle chat…

Story: Just the Two of Us
Author: kesdax
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1155
Author's Summary: That one where the Master and the Rani get stranded on a desert planet.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Ainley), The Rani
Warnings: None.

Recced because: As it says, it’s the Master, and the Rani, stranded together on a deserted planet with a broken TARDIS. And, as it happens, a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Yes, people, if you’ve ever wondered what happened after the ending of The Mark of the Rani, here is your answer! It’s a fic filled with bickering, death threats, unaccountable moments of life-saving, and hyperbole. And a dinosaur. I grinned pretty much the whole way through, and I hope you will too.

Story: Deus Ex Liborum (The Circle Has Six Sides)
Author: Glinda
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2672
Author's Summary: The Library contains all possible knowledge. The TARDIS contains all possible time and space. Never the twain should meet.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a gorgeous, wonderfully mysterious, eerie, and beautiful TARDIS POV fic in which the TARDIS battles the Library on behalf of her Doctor and his companion. It explores the two entities, the TARDIS’s relationships with those she carries, and the power of stories and names, and it's an amazing piece.

Excerpt:

Those who created her, had the power to tame stars, to shape time and space to their will. They paid a terrible price for their knowledge, to keep their secrets safe. Safe within their citadel sending their creations and their renegades out among the dreaming stars. Boxes within boxes, knowledge locked one with another like so many Russian dolls. A tiny part of the greater burden shared within each of them, and in each of their creations. She remembers so much that all others have forgotten, if she forgets they will be lost for ever, for good or ill she must remember.

Story: Child of the Cold
Author: schildkroet
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2459
Author's Summary: Gwen is pregnant, and this time it's not an alien egg. It's not entirely natural either.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper/Toshiko Sato, Gwen Cooper/Rhys Williams
Warnings: pregnancy, angst

Recced because:This story is angsty and heart-wrenching, but not in an overly dramatic kind of way. The author uses different fonts to differentiate between different times and plays with flashbacks very effectively.

Story: Parting Gifts
Author: navaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 8399
Author's Summary: Jack, post COE, tracks down and confronts the Doctor about why he didn't come to save the day. The Doctor, immediately post WOM, is in a really bad place mentally to be having this conversation.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: Mature look at two traumatized and broken characters. All the emotions and the blaming and evading of issues is handled well in my opinion and the character’s feel very real and in character. It’s deliciously angsty and the sex is angry and not comforting, but the ending is deliciously bittersweet. It’s one of my favorite stories for this pairing.

Story: What Rassilon Hath Joined Together…
Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7481
Author's Summary: Utter crack. After Five Doctors, the Doctor fails to escape Responsibility and, to add insult to injury, is presented with a long-outstanding marriage contract.
Characters/Pairings: Ainley!Master/Fifth Doctor
Warnings: Explicit Sex with consent issues, spanking

Recced because: It’s cracky, it has arranged marriage and weird Time Lord marriage costums and it has hot sex. Do I need to say more? Well, it’s also amazingly written. The character voices are great. There are nice bits about their romantic backstory and the emotions feel all very true. There is also a sequels story to this, that’s worth reading.

Author's Summary: Taste buds were tricky little buggers.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond

Story: Ordinary Morning
Author: Trobadora
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 615
Author's Summary: Wood and soufflés and genius against the Daleks, for a year.
Characters/Pairings: Oswin Oswald
Warnings: None

Recced because:Little, heartbreaking exploration of the Oswin we meet in Asylum of the Daleks. In later episodes we learn more about Clara, but not about the others out there scattered over time and this piece is just is a nice look at the girl and the Dalek, full of little important details and foreshadowing.

I can't believe it's November already! But it is, and the comm runs out of reccers in about six weeks, so it's time to ask for volunteers again. If you've been reading this comm for a while but have never stepped forward to rec, please consider it – everyone, new and old reccers alike, is welcome to rec. All you need to do select 4-10 stories that haven't been recced before and that meet the comm's fairly basic rules (well-written/formatted, no bashfic, etc.). Reccing periods last two weeks, and our first open slot begins December 16.

You can read the rules and sign up to rec in this post. Thank you!

Story: No Moon
Author: McInstry
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2317
Author's Summary: Within the five first times she sees him, he becomes the most important person to her. Post-Doomsday, Post Avengers. Captain America (Steve Rogers)/ Rose Tyler.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: As you may have noticed by now, I like crossovers. I'm ending my run of recs with a beauty by an author who hasn't been seen here before, an angsty story in which post-Doomsday Rose has several encounters with The Avengers in Pete's world, and falls for a man who is as lost as she is...

Story: Long-Distance Phone Calls
Author: Settiai
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3340
Author's Summary: One of these years, Fitz Kreiner was going to learn not to answer his phone.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Fitz Kreiner, Maria Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.
Recced because: One of the first stories I recced in this community was Settiai's Rebuilding a Life, an epic NCIS crossover in which Fitz Kreiner was stranded in Washington and ended up in a relationship with one of the characters. This is a non-crossover sequel which doesn't draw on the NCIS background or characters; instead it has Fitz running into Maria Jackson and finally renewing contact with Sarah Jane Smith. A nice slightly angsty story, which also deals with some old-Who canon issues.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2358
Author's Summary: Donna and the Doctor find Jenny again. Shenanigans ensue. Mostly in dungeons.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jenny, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None:

Recced Because: Jenny, the Doctor's daughter, doesn't get a lot of coverage in fanfic, but what there is tends to be pretty good. This is one of the better non-slash examples; she's reunited with Ten and Donna, who are essentially her parents, and wacky fun ensues.

Story: Subroutine Stream
Author: Amilyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1957
Author's Summary: Set just after "The Five Doctors," based on the conjecture that the Master was involved in the gift of K9 to Sarah Jane.
Characters/Pairings: K-9, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced Because: There's an odd dichotomy about K-9. On the one hand he's one of the most beloved characters of the show and percieved as a perfect pet (see my icon above); on the other hand, he's a machine, and all of his loveable characteristics are products of his programming. This story looks behind the facade, and asks what would happen if his programming hid a few surprises.

Author: Pandastar
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 255
Author's Summary: Or, a brief history of Worzel Gummidge. Crack-fic, sort of.
Characters/Pairings: Family of Blood
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I like really short stories, drabbles and the like, especially crossovers. In 255 words Pandastar deftly explains the sinister origins of a beloved childhood character, and it makes all sorts of sense. In view of this story's length I haven't posted an extract.

Story: The Endless Doctor
Author: Beshter
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 14067
Author's Summary:The Doctor's life has been shaped from the beginning by these strange beings known as the Endless. All find the Doctor fascinating and each leave an impression on his very long journey. A crossover between Doctor Who and The Sandman comics by DC/Vertigo Comics.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th), The Doctor (Fatal Death)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: My favourite comic series, the one that re-kindled my interest in comics after years of barely paying them any attention, has to be Neil Gaiman's Sandman, in which the main characters are the Lord of Dreams and other anthropomorphic personifications. Here Beshter finds reasons for The Doctor to meet them. It's a very effective fusion of these universes, as a series of excellent vignettes. It's the first time this author's been recced here, I suspect it won't be the last.

Characters/Pairings: River Song, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Wibbly-wobbly stories when the Doctor and companions meet out of the right temporal order are always fun. This is an excellent example, written by an author who hasn't been recced here before, in which River, en route to prison, is rescued by an early incarnation of the Doctor.

Word Count: 1711
Author's Summary: Time’s arrow does not exclude the possibility of trick shots. (Crossover with Arrow.)
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Jack Harkness
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love crossovers, and one of the shows I've recently liked is Arrow, whose major villain in season 1 is played by John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn. This story takes the idea that Merlyn is one of Jack Harkness's identities and runs with it, with lots of wibbly-wobbly angst for all concerned. The story can be read without knowledge of the crossover.

I'm [livejournal.com profile] ffutures, Marcus Rowland at the archive, and I'll be reccing for the next two weeks. I've been a little pushed for time and haven't been able to do much research - okay, let's be honest, I more or less forgot I was going to be doing this until [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis reminded me - but fortunately I seem to have seen some excellent stories recently. At least one has been posted or linked to on other livejournal communities within the last few days, but I'm hoping that they'll be new to enough people here that you won't think I'm wasting your time.

My recs are predominantly New Who this time, with some crossovers - and I should probably mention that I don't count stories merging Dr. Who, Torchwood, and/or The Sarah-Jane Adventures, or different eras, as crossovers; to me they're all part of the same wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey universe.

Starting with something brand new:

Story: In Her Absence
Author: Cyberjulie
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 71047
Author's Summary: A tale of the early days of the Silurian warrior Madame Vastra, ranging from her early travels with the Doctor to her adventures in the alleys of Victorian London.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny Flint, Madame Vastra, Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I'm a big fan of Madame Vastra and Jenny, and would love to see them in a spinoff series, but there are relatively few stories about their early relationship, and I can't think of any that cover Vastra's initial meeting with the Doctor and the beginning of her career in Victorian London. This covers all of that, adding in an explanation of her use of Japanese swords, an alien encounter, a mysterious menace, and lots of other fun stuff. It was posted to the [livejournal.com profile] lizardladylove community just days ago, and I knew as soon as I read it that it would be one of my recs. Incidentally, there are some author's notes for the story here: http://lizardladylove.livejournal.com/28726.html

Author's Summary: The ancient god, and his reminders of death.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor
Warnings: N/A

Recced because:

It is difficult to write effective poetry, and I think that difficulty is probably magnified when you're writing fic and poetry together. This short bit of verse is not only effective, it is also incredibly affecting. The Doctor needs his companions. They are special to him. They are, after a thousand years, the only mystery worth solving.

Word Count: 1354
Author's Summary: Strax is concerned for the Doctor and the lady with the giant head
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Strax, Eleven, Jenny, Madame Vastra
Warnings: N/A

Recced because:

Strax's Sontaran up-bringing has left him confused about many things. He thinks that River's hair is a part of her head and he doesn't understand why his allies keep pressing their faces together, but he does understand strength when he sees it – even if he doesn't completely understand its source. His misinterpretations are as hilarious as they are tragic, but his observations are still very keen and provide an intriguing insight on the Doctor's relationship with River.

And, as the outsider POV makes clear, they are aliens and unfamiliar with the world their exile has brought them too. The child who will be Susan is very young here, but her need for food and warmth is already forcing the man who will one day be the Doctor to depend on humans – and also, to defend them.

Recced because:

Great writing, emotional dialogue, and a startling twist.

Peri is the Schrodinger's Cat of Doctor Who. Here, Ten pays her a visit to ask for forgiveness with words and actions. Meeting the Doctor has effected Peri's life in good ways and bad. She's rather philosophic about it: happy about what she's gained, and pragmatic about what she's lost. This fic shows how much the Doctor cares about his companions, even though he is a coward sometimes; especially when it comes to loss. Most of all, it shows how much the Doctor needs the people he travels with and what he might turn into without their influence. I recommend reading this twice, because some of Peri's early observations become much more significant following the final paragraph.
