Bonsoir, Calufrax!

doctorxdonna here (RoseByAnyOtherName on Teaspoon), I'm another one who encountered the Doctor through new Who, but I've been loving 'getting to know' him and his past though through the 1-8 stories that crop up here on Calufrax. I really and truly did mean to get to this recc yesterday, but I'm a retail manager and spent most of my time rocking back and forth in disbelief that I survived Black Friday weekend. Now I'm still riding the leftover high from the 50th Anniversary special, so I bring you this little gem from an author who'd never been recced here before. Enjoy!

Story: 5 Minutes Before the Wedding

Author's Summary: A conversation between the Doctor and the woman he's about to marry. She has her reasons.

Warnings: None

Recced because: How I wish the anniversary had played out a little more like naiad8's version of the story. History tends to speak of Queen Elizabeth I as a brilliant, pragmatic, and analytical woman, and I was a little sad to see them treat her a bit like just another girl with a crush. Here, Elizabeth reveals that her reasons for choosing to marry the Doctor when she'd eschewed so many suitors before him are motivated almost entirely by logic.

Recced because: It’s a beautifully written fic that’s the perfect blend of old and new. The Doctor now, and at the beginning, Susan and the TARDIS, and his most recent companions, tracing parallels and spaces between them, and memory and forgetting. As I said, it’s really beautiful and a lovely reminder of how this one sprawling series does all connect up in the end.

Recced because: It’s something out of the usual run of fics and it’s gorgeous, with an excellently done Seven and Ace, together in the snow – and an enigmatic fairy tale that may or may not be only a story. But then, there’s no such thing as “only a story”, is there?

Anyway, as it happens, what I said was that the special was lacking in penguins. This is no longer the case, and isn’t it marvellous?

Recced because: It’s a beautiful look at the Doctor and Clara, in the past and the future, with wonderfully fractured glimpses of her many lives, and the confusion of it for the Doctor. It explores some of the consequences of that, but lightly, and not without humour and there's sharp characterisation in the short snatches that comprise the whole that is the story. It’s lovely.

Author's Summary: This is a Doctor Who/Red Dwarf crossover. Twistedskein on LJ pointed out that the Doctor was spotted at the assassination of JFK, and that the crew of Starbug also visit Dallas in 1963 while looking for the world's largest takeaway order.

Recced because: It’s a whole heap of fun! Apparently, there are just some points in time that attract all the travellers in the fourth dimension, like tacky tourist hot-spots, and Dallas, 1963 is one of them. You needn’t worry too much about the crossover element – it’s that concept and spotting the nods to yet more time travellers that is the joy of this humorous fic, plus the great description of time-space at the start (very New Who, and very Red Dwarf in itself). Grab your time machine of choice and join in…

This is a lovely, quiet look at both characters. Liz is still her recognisably brilliant and snarky self, the Doctor’s come to make up for lost time, and neither of them are too old for friendship, or another adventure together. As I’ve already said, it really is just lovely. Go read it – you won’t regret it.

calufrax! In a fit of muddle-headedness, I forgot to introduce myself yesterday (sorry!), but what’s a little non-linearity in this fandom? Anyway, I’m

lost_spook (vvj5 on Teaspoon), and I’m your reccer for the next two weeks, steering us over the upcoming anniversary weekend (with some extra recs, gosh). Yes, people, if you’ve ever wondered what happened after the ending of The Mark of the Rani, here is your answer! It’s a fic filled with bickering, death threats, unaccountable moments of life-saving, and hyperbole. And a dinosaur. I grinned pretty much the whole way through, and I hope you will too.

Recced because: It’s a gorgeous, wonderfully mysterious, eerie, and beautiful TARDIS POV fic in which the TARDIS battles the Library on behalf of her Doctor and his companion. It explores the two entities, the TARDIS’s relationships with those she carries, and the power of stories and names, and it's an amazing piece.

Those who created her, had the power to tame stars, to shape time and space to their will. They paid a terrible price for their knowledge, to keep their secrets safe. Author's Summary: Jack, post COE, tracks down and confronts the Doctor about why he didn't come to save the day. The Doctor, immediately post WOM, is in a really bad place mentally to be having this conversation.

Recced because: Mature look at two traumatized and broken characters. All the emotions and the blaming and evading of issues is handled well in my opinion and the character’s feel very real and in character. It’s deliciously angsty and the sex is angry and not comforting, but the ending is deliciously bittersweet. It’s one of my favorite stories for this pairing.

Story: What Rassilon Hath Joined Together…

Recced because: It’s cracky, it has arranged marriage and weird Time Lord marriage costums and it has hot sex. Do I need to say more? Well, it’s also amazingly written. The character voices are great. There are nice bits about their romantic backstory and the emotions feel all very true. There is also a sequels story to this, that’s worth reading.

Recced because:Little, heartbreaking exploration of the Oswin we meet in Asylum of the Daleks. In later episodes we learn more about Clara, but not about the others out there scattered over time and this piece is just is a nice look at the girl and the Dalek, full of little important details and foreshadowing.

Recced because: One of the first stories I recced in this community was Settiai's Rebuilding a Life, an epic NCIS crossover in which Fitz Kreiner was stranded in Washington and ended up in a relationship with one of the characters. This is a non-crossover sequel which doesn't draw on the NCIS background or characters; instead it has Fitz running into Maria Jackson and finally renewing contact with Sarah Jane Smith. A nice slightly angsty story, which also deals with some old-Who canon issues.

Recced Because: There's an odd dichotomy about K-9. On the one hand he's one of the most beloved characters of the show and percieved as a perfect pet (see my icon above); on the other hand, he's a machine, and all of his loveable characteristics are products of his programming. This story looks behind the facade, and asks what would happen if his programming hid a few surprises.

Recced because: I like really short stories, drabbles and the like, especially crossovers. In 255 words Pandastar deftly explains the sinister origins of a beloved childhood character, and it makes all sorts of sense. In view of this story's length I haven't posted an extract.

Story: The Endless Doctor

Recced because: My favourite comic series, the one that re-kindled my interest in comics after years of barely paying them any attention, has to be Neil Gaiman's Sandman, in which the main characters are the Lord of Dreams and other anthropomorphic personifications. Here Beshter finds reasons for The Doctor to meet them. It's a very effective fusion of these universes, as a series of excellent vignettes. It's the first time this author's been recced here, I suspect it won't be the last.

Recced because: I love crossovers, and one of the shows I've recently liked is Arrow, whose major villain in season 1 is played by John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn. This story takes the idea that Merlyn is one of Jack Harkness's identities and runs with it, with lots of wibbly-wobbly angst for all concerned. The story can be read without knowledge of the crossover.

ffutures, Marcus Rowland at the archive, and I'll be reccing for the next two weeks. I've been a little pushed for time and haven't been able to do much research - okay, let's be honest, I more or less forgot I was going to be doing this until

nonelvis reminded me - but fortunately I seem to have seen some excellent stories recently. At least one has been posted or linked to on other livejournal communities within the last few days, but I'm hoping that they'll be new to enough people here that you won't think I'm wasting your time.

My recs are predominantly New Who this time, with some crossovers - and I should probably mention that I don't count stories merging Dr. Who, Torchwood, and/or The Sarah-Jane Adventures, or different eras, as crossovers; to me they're all part of the same wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey universe.

Starting with something brand new:

Recced because: I'm a big fan of Madame Vastra and Jenny, and would love to see them in a spinoff series, but there are relatively few stories about their early relationship, and I can't think of any that cover Vastra's initial meeting with the Doctor and the beginning of her career in Victorian London. This covers all of that, adding in an explanation of her use of Japanese swords, an alien encounter, a mysterious menace, and lots of other fun stuff. It was posted to the

It is difficult to write effective poetry, and I think that difficulty is probably magnified when you're writing fic and poetry together. This short bit of verse is not only effective, it is also incredibly affecting. The Doctor needs his companions. They are special to him. His misinterpretations are as hilarious as they are tragic, but his observations are still very keen and provide an intriguing insight on the Doctor's relationship with River.

The child who will be Susan is very young here, but her need for food and warmth is already forcing the man who will one day be the Doctor to depend on humans – and also, to defend them.

Great writing, emotional dialogue, and a startling twist.

Peri is the Schrodinger's Cat of Doctor Who. Here, Ten pays her a visit to ask for forgiveness with words and actions. Meeting the Doctor has effected Peri's life in good ways and bad. She's rather philosophic about it: happy about what she's gained, and pragmatic about what she's lost. This fic shows how much the Doctor cares about his companions, even though he is a coward sometimes; especially when it comes to loss. Most of all, it shows how much the Doctor needs the people he travels with and what he might turn into without their influence. I recommend reading this twice, because some of Peri's early observations become much more significant following the final paragraph.
