Recced because: Okay, I freely admit this fic was written as a surprise birthday gift for me, and the author is a dear friend, but in my defense, the story makes me laugh every time I read it, and I needed a pick-me-up today. Which this story does flawlessly in a mere 500 words, including an absolutely terrible (and terribly filthy) pun directly related to the titular form of encryption. All I can say without spoiling the story is that it involves River summoning Eleven for help decrypting a message he is uniquely qualified to decrypt -- and at 500 delightful words, you owe it to yourself to find out how that decryption happens. (It's also less dirty that you'd think for an adult-rated story -- not a complaint, honest! -- so if you're uncomfortable with explicit sex but can handle a filthy joke or two, you're fine here.)

Recced because: For my last rec, I wanted to rec something in the spirit of Christmas and this year's Christmas special, "The Husbands of River Song." I decided upon this fic, told from a viewpoint of a woman who overhears the Doctor and River arguing about capturing something. The woman later finds out the creature the Doctor and River are hunting is targeting her son. The story moves quickly and has equal parts action, suspense, and comedic squabbling between the Doctor and River.

Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Jenny Flint, Madame Vastra, River Song, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), plus Anthony Williams and OCs
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was actually planning to rec another fic by this author, and I came across this more or less at random while looking for the other one on her Teaspoon page yesterday...and loved it. And couldn't believe it had no reviews and decided the best way of remedying that with a vengeance was to get it out here on Calufrax. So win/win for me - I get to rec this magnificent fic and still have one in the hole for my next reccing stint! :D

In all seriousness, though, this is a great fic, written with excellent characterisation and just common sense, decency and humanity. You know, like the best fics are. The fact that it also ticks quite a few of my fannish boxes as regards the tail end of the Eleven era (the Capaldinator is obviously brilliant, but I'm unashamed to say Eleven remains "my" NuWho Doctor) certainly doesn't hurt either. I've made no secret of the fact that I was, and am, seriously dissatisfied with the ending Amy and Rory got in The Angels Take Manhattan, not even because of their fates but mainly because of the slapdash way it was all plotted and the way we were expected to swallow rl attempts to plaster over those plot holes by authorial "word of god", so this sort of semi-fix-it (it doesn't actually fix it, but makes its point by illustrating one of the several blatantly obvious ways that it could be fixed) will always hold a certain appeal for me. The fact that it's wise-guy G-Man Canton Everett Delaware III, still one of my all-time favourite one-shot Who guest characters, who gets to be the main instrument of that sort-of-fix-it is, for me, the shiny cherry on top.

The author gives Canton an OC boyfriend, fittingly also a smart-mouthed hard-boiled cop type, who is also the everyman observer of the Doctor's strange world, as they go about reuniting Canton, the Paternoster Row crew, Amy and Rory and their adopted son Anthony, and eventually River and Eleven himself, and even get a bit of fraught adventure along the way. Throughout, we are reminded deftly and thought-provokingly of the difficulties and dangers facing same-sex relationships over the ages, with Vastra and Jenny's relationship also portrayed with great perceptiveness and sensitivity. I think the main thing I like about this, though, is the obvious love for the diverse cast of characters; even the ones that don't get that many lines (Eleven, actually) are vividly portrayed; as I often say of fanfic I find has particularly true-to-life characterisations, you really can hear the voices as you read it.

So get over there and see what you think, and please leave some words of appreciation for the author...!

[livejournal.com profile] betawho loves one of my favorite couples, Eleven and River, and reading this particular little piece is definitely a tiny, high-quality gem of the sort that leaves one smiling. (If, like me, you’re an Eleven/River fan who occasionally enjoy pieces of fluff that make you go “awwww” without getting too gummed up in sweetness, I’d recommend a large slice of the author’s oeuvre.)

Warnings: n/a

Recced because: The amount of relationship building that went into every side of this story is frankly astounding. As is the effort that went into characterisation, particularly at different points in each of the character's lives. Everyone is in character, the voices are crisp, and you can really picture the scene. I like how they've managed to seamlessly fill in some of the gaps in River's backstory to make it work, while still referencing little nods in episodes, like A Good Man Goes to War. The fish and chips nod is a pleasure, too! I also like the amount of work that's gone into both the pop culture references (eg. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and into building new planets and species to play around with. Always a plus when there's some of that to add to a brilliant plot.

Another note - sorry that my reccing has been... sporadic. I underestimated the amount of real life that would happen this week and have spent half the week driving forth across the province of Nova Scotia and sewing.

Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Jenny Flint, Madame Vastra, River Song, The Doctor (11th), The Ood
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Alternate Universe

Recced because: I'm a sucker for fix-it stories, and one of the biggest things to fix in New Who is the problem of Donna. This story, by an author who hasn't been recced here before, romps through that via a relationship between Donna and River Song. Along the way it visits Oodspace, Victorian London, 1920s Germany, and other fun locations. I'm not sure it says anything especially profound, except that the Doctor should fix his own problems, it's just a lot of fun.

Author's Summary: In which River exists, a spirit in a web, dressed in white and timeless.

Warnings: Angst, Drama, Introspection, Romance

Recced because: Well. River for one. River could be the sole reason for this rec alone. But it isn't just River. It is River lost within the Machine. It is how she is painted, so vivid, so alive and so very, very River within this fiction. 'Inkfire' consistently blows me away with the quality of her work. So very much so, it is difficult to chose just which fiction of hers to recommend. I'm afraid my reviews to her work are never very stellar, as she generally leaves me too flabbergasted and stunned and in awe to come up with actual words to describe the feelings she invokes within me.

This is another one of those fictions. It left me stunned. If left me sad and elated and sighing with the overall perfection within each and every word, sentence, paragraph. She puts you there with River. She shows us River's strength, her calm, her longing for all that she knew, even as she does what she does best - takes what is handed to her and makes do. She deals with the cards she has drawn as best as she knows how. And with River, her best is nothing but her all.

This fiction is River Song. Down to a tee. I am in awe and I could not let this week go by without reccing this story by this (oh-so) phenomenal author. But in case this rec is not enough to convince, I have a taste of this beauty below the cut...

My last rec! I hope you've enjoyed reading as much as I've enjoyed sharing my favorites. Don't forget to feed the authors! For the last rec, let's pick one from last September's EleventyFest:

Author's Summary: Megan gets to know the regulars at the coffee shop, even the regulars who don't always know her.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River, Amy/Rory, OC/OC
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: [livejournal.com profile] nancybrown wrote so many awesome stories for EleventyFest. Adventures, humor, slice of life, erotica; she wrote all of it and it was all brilliant. This one is a love story that unfolds from the stories we are more familiar with, turned unfamiliar as they are seen from an outsider POV. We get to know Eleven and the Ponds out of order, as just another few in the progression of regulars at a late-night cafe. And of course the timey-wimey family is a mystery, but they are only one story among many, and not necessarily the most important one for Megan.

Title: Moon River
Author: Rangersyl (co-written with Taiamu)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 46658
Author's Summary: With Lake Silencio inexorably approaching, the Doctor wonders if it's time to fulfill his first and last promise to River. But the River he finds isn't used to being the one who has to say 'spoilers.' So they compromise: an archaeological expedition on a stormy, hostile moon where an ancient danger lurks behind every shadow.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's a good old fashioned adventure where the setting is so well-realized and visual, like a character in itself. It's also River and the Doctor against the world, still trying to navigate their relationship among antithetical timelines, looking out for each other and having their version of a good time. I really love the way the story unfolds and gains momentum as it goes; and you can tell that the authors had a blast (and used a good amount of hands-on networking knowledge) writing the alien perspective. Anyway, it's action, adventure, a mystery alien world, with good characterization and a good dose of H/C thrown in. Perfect episode-type fic for the long drought.

Recced Because:

I am actually astounded that no one has beat me to reccing this, because it is hilarious (it really should have a tea-near-keyboard warning on it), sexy, clever, and one of the overall best Eleven/Amy/Rory fics I've ever read. It continues such diverse marvels as: Eleven attempting to cook breakfast, Eleven being angry at primitive kitchen appliances, jokes about the UNIT dating controversy, futuristic petunias, Sharkrace 3000, and a scene inspired by this post from texts from the TARDIS.

There's so much going on that when I went to fill out the reccing form I was a bit stunned to realize it's only a little over 4000 words. And, however whacky it all gets, the character voices read true throughout. It's about the Ponds being a strange, dysfunctional, happy, ridiculous family who continue to be all of those descriptors whether they are rocketing across the cosmos on the back of a magical space whale, or sitting around the kitchen eating cereal.

Strax's Sontaran up-bringing has left him confused about many things. He thinks that River's hair is a part of her head and he doesn't understand why his allies keep pressing their faces together, but he does understand strength when he sees it – even if he doesn't completely understand its source. His misinterpretations are as hilarious as they are tragic, but his observations are still very keen and provide an intriguing insight on the Doctor's relationship with River.

Hello, everyone! I'm very excited to be back reccing at Calufrax for the second time! My primary ship is Ten/Rose, so a chunk of my recs will involve that pairing, but I've also got several recs lined up for you involving 11th Doctor era characters...and one interesting look at the Cybermen conversion process. :)

So, without further ado...here's my first rec of the week!

Story: The First and Last Time
Author: Incurable Romantic
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2382
Author's Summary: River Song senses her time with the Doctor is growing short on a visit to Paris. Short, sad, angsty one-shot.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River, with hints of Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: As a Doctor/Rose shipper who also really likes Eleven/River, this was a perfect mesh. It's a heartbreaking story, told from River Song's (3rd person) POV, and captures the bittersweet nature of her timey-wimey relationship with the Doctor. It also captures just how heart-wrenching it would be to love someone who still loves somebody else.

He picked up a bunch of flowers wrapped in white paper that were lying on the table. “These are for you,” he said, thrusting them at her. It wasn’t the first time she had received flowers from him. She hoped it wasn’t the first time he was giving them to her.

“Thank you,” she said coyly, a flirtatious raise of one eyebrow and a tiny smirk on her lips. “They’re lovely.”

And they were. Carnations and baby’s breath. Sometimes it was lilies, sometimes irises, often painted daisies, occasionally a huge bouquet of a mix of beautiful, fragrant flowers without names from far flung planets. But never roses, and occasionally she wondered why. She had never asked. It felt like cheating, somehow. Spoilers.

Warnings: Swearing, action

Recced because: This is one author that I go back to over and over again. Seriously! Go give her love. That said, the reason I chose this fic in particular is because of the range of things it covers that just ring 'Doctor Who' in my books. Martha being awesome (another reason is because of her qualification this week in [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness), the Doctor not being perfect, people being people and difficult and just... real. And warm. It's got laughs, and it's got bits that really take out your heart and stamp on it, but it's also got heart, and really, that's what a fic should be all about... It's a long one to start, but well worth the time to sit down, maybe with a cup of tea, and drink it all in.

Title: Pack Up the Moon and Dismantle the Sun

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 16532
Author's Summary: River hasn’t seen her Doctor in a very long time and decides to request opportunities to work towards a pardon. The only offer comes from the last organisation she would want, the Church.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, River, Amy and Rory
Warnings: Swearing

Recc'ed Because: This is a look at the events leading up to early series 5, in a new light entirely, from River's perspective in Stormcage. It's a difficult story to read: we all knew her lines from series 6 about losing the Doctor by degrees, but in this story you actually see it. You have a River who by virtue of their twisted timelines, has spent years alone in Stormcage and who is not sure she will ever see the man she loves again, or if she does, if he will recognize her. It presents a very realistic motivation in her working with the Church and Father Octavian. It's sad but hopeful, and tells a story on the edges of another unfolding story; the story of a life well-lived that ends where we know it will but makes it all the more moving for knowing the road that led there. It reads like a novel, effortless and forthright but painting a picture in scene and dialogue, with recognizable characters throughout and fully realized original characters in the wings as well.

I know, I know - I'm running late today! But let's see if I can get this in before the bell rings - yeah?

Story: You sheltered me from the storm
Author: Fate_Incomplete
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,683
Author's Summary: The first year in Stormcage had been the hardest, as River came to realise just how much time she would spend alone, waiting. Yet an unexpected friendship, and the ever expanding entries in her diary of adventures with the Doctor, made the sacrifice of keeping her secret worthwhile. She lived for the friendship and love of two men, but more importantly, she learned to live for herself. In the end, she made her life her own, and the legend of River Song grew in its own right.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Character Study, Crossover, Standalone

Recced because: I think part of what truly makes this show is the amazing characters that you find within it. In the end, the show (though centered around the Doctor, much as the characters are) is not about the Doctor. It is about other people, how they relate to him - what they mean to him and he to them. Two of the most enigmatic, engaging, funny and yet tormented characters are none other than Captain Jack Harkness and River Song. There have been many tales written about them meeting - all of them flirty or funny or dangerous or angst ridden. This fiction captures all of those aspects and so much more. The Doctor blips in now and again, but while he is the main drive of this tale, the center and main portions are lined around two people who love him in vastly different ways, for reasons that are opposing, yet similar all the same. These are two people who lives have been defined BY the Doctor - even when he is not there (especially when he is not there). They have more than common ground to meet on - and somehow, despite their ties (or maybe because of them), they forge a relationship separate from the Doctor, but made richer because of him. Honestly, this is one of my favorite writers - so you will always see one rec by me about her work. She has a beautiful grasp of character dynamics and settings that make you feel every moment, every word. I'm sure you've read other crossovers with Jack and River. But you haven't even touched on these two until you have read this one.

It's Friday. Freya's day. Something with love. And smut.
I couldn't just pick one fic, so I picked two - here's one.
(I'm procrastinating, I should be reading medieval manuscripts.)

Story: Finger on the Trigger
Author: jinniyah
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,546
Author's Summary: Eleven has an inner gun-kink he isn't aware of yet. River fully takes advantage of this.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This is not only very good smut (I appreciate good, original smut), but also well-written. The Doctor and River are very much in character and, more importantly, their timey-wimey not-in-syncness plays an important part in the story, too, which not only fits with canon very well, but also keeps the reader on his/her toes.
The dialogue is quick and witty (see preview) and really adds to the action that takes place. As much as this is a smutty oneshot, I do like it when there is a bit of framework involved - this isn't just River and the Doctor doing nasty things, there's a fair bit of psychology involved. After all, River knows something the Doctor doesn't (always a good place to start) and gently pushes him into knowing himself just that little bit better (through sex) and we get to see it.
River has the upper hand in the story and it is really interesting to see the way the Doctor responds to the things she does (I personally especially like the babbling - 'Nervous? Of course I'm not nervous! Not at all. I'm a Time Lord, I walk in eternity. Do I look like I'm nervous? No! Don't answer that!'). The 'power' dynamic in their relationship in canon is fascinating to begin with and this is developed in this fic very well, too. It could totally have happened at some point.
Well, and I may have a bit of a thing for dirty talking - and River does that very well.

Ahhh, my last rec of the week! I have so very much enjoyed sharing these fictions and authors with you. Reading these tales is a special treat - but sharing them is a true Joy! I hope you've had as great a time with these recs as I have. I can only hope one day I am able to do this again. Until that time - one last rec from another fantastic author!

Story: There is Nothing in the Universe You Are Not
Author: Lonewytch
Rating: All Ages/PG
Word Count: 1,930
Author's Summary: There are wonders laid all across the length of the Universe, littered and streaked across the black. They shine out like fires for those who know how to see them. There's both dark and light inside the Doctor and within the Universe - he shows River.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, River Song
Warnings: None - Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: I know, once you read this author's work, you will know EXACTLY why I recced this fiction. Lonewytch has such a beautiful style - the images that unfold from the pages are breathtaking, putting you right in the heart of the moment. I love her work with a passion that sometimes frightens me - and picking The Right Fiction to share was unbelievably hard! But this one...this one is the fiction to share! Sweeping imagery intermixed with soul-deep emotion that pulls you in and leaves you breathless with longing. Her almost philosphical view on River and the Doctor is so deeply intimate it staggers me. She speaks from THEM and it always leaves me shaking and blinking when reality falls back into place around me. This is the Doctor showing River where she fits. Showing her where he IS - and what all that means. He shows her the deepest abysses to the brightest stars and tries to tell her (in his own Doctory way) how she fills the spaces in between. One of this author's better fictions, though really - all of her fictions are just as astoundingly awe-inspiring as this one. But this tale? This tale is one you cannot miss. Read. Be blown away. Then read it again...

Story: Half Sick of Shadows
Author: EAWeek
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 58,450
Author's Summary: The barren planet Gossan holds a powerful secret, one that is somehow connected to River Song’s release from prison. Can River and the Eleventh Doctor defeat the Papal Mainframe, or will they become its prisoners for all eternity?
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Madame Kovarian, River Song/Eleventh Doctor, Other Doctors, OCs
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing - Action/Adventure, Horror, Mystery, Romance

Recced because: Well, quite frankly, I urged EAWeek to get a Teaspoon account so I could REC THIS FIC, if that tells you anything. I'm not a shipper (or rather, my ships are slashy rarepair), so in general Doctor/River is not my ship. But this fiction is so flawless, it made me ship them - if only for this fiction alone! A gorgeous tale that has perfect characterisation and all the action and adventure you could ever ask for from a Doctor Who fic. It also gives us a bit of background into Doctor Song's early years, as well as some startling insights into The Doctor himself (both current and past). A fiction that goes from the beginning to the end of The Stormcage and takes on the Silence in a big way you just won't see anywhere else. The real question is - how could I not rec this fiction?

Hey, everybody! This is solo_by_choice, known as Doctor Tam on Teaspoon, and I come bearing a variety of stories for my first reccing experience!

Story: Whoever Brought Me Here Will Have to Take Me Home
Author: Lonewytch
Rating: All Ages

Word Count: 2289
Author's Summary: AU piece set after River breaks the fixed point in time in The Wedding of River Song. He has no plan to save himself and she will not kill him. They live out their days in a disintegrating universe, loving but never touching. The story is structured around some of the cards from the Tarot's Major Arcana.

Characters/Pairings: River Song/Eleventh Doctor, Amy/Rory
Warnings: None

Recced because: As many others have said before me, I love the idea of River Song. The execution was rushed, I think. The central idea of The Wedding of River Song was also brilliant; all of time crunched into one moment is something begging to be explored. In the universe of this story, River has the agency to save or destroy the Doctor and the universe. It’s dark and it hurts. That’s what I like about it.

Story: the joy of small days
Author leiascully
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,268
Author's Summary: "Come on, Time Lord. Everybody needs a day off now and again."
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River
Warnings: None

Recced because: Even a Time Lord needs a quiet day spent with a loved one, doing nothing more adventurous than watching Casablanca on the couch. (Especially when the TARDIS agrees with River about how Eleven should spend his day, and locks him out.) I'm not always a fan of the type of story the author herself describes as "a ridiculous schmoopfest involving scones and snuggling," but Eleven and River feel so much themselves here that I fell for this story immediately – because sometimes, it's the small days that define the characters' relationship more than the big ones.

And so my reccing time has come to an end. For a first time reccer, this is definitely a harder task than it looks! But, I've enjoyed my time throughly! Till next time! :)

Story: Goodbye
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1273
Author's Summary: Nobody should have to die without knowing that they're valued. And time can be rewritten.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, The Brigadier
Warnings: Character Death

Recced because: I felt like starting and ending the week with Brigadier stories. The awesome part about this goodbye story is that it really doesn't feel like goodbye. <3 Nicholas Courtney/The Brigadier.

Excerpt:

"And that," the Doctor said, "is the closest I've ever seen her to starry-eyed hero-worship. She's usually self-confident to the point of smugness. Bit of a scramble sometimes to impress her, actually." He didn't look as if he minded the prospect.

And if the Doctor described someone as overly confident–actually, it was probably because he honestly didn't see the irony. Some things didn't change, no matter how the face did. "You're Earth's champion," Alastair said.

"I've been known to borrow the title when grandstanding," the Doctor admitted. "It's not as if it's exclusive. Sarah Jane, Ace, Martha Jones–a fellow named Jack will carry the title, intermittently, for quite a long time indeed–but when we don't need it, we all know who to return it to." He pulled one of the chairs close to the bed and sat down, that slightly mismatched face a study in contradictory emotions. "In thirty centuries, three times my life and thirty times yours, children will still learn about you. Generations have grown up safe and free because of things that you did." Alastair realized, with a stab of sympathetic embarrassment, that the Doctor was crying. "I thought you ought to know."

Hello, I'm dbskyler, your reccer for the week. I'm looking forward to sharing some more of my favorite stories with you, and I hope you find at least one new story you enjoy!

Story: Time and Relatives in Space
Author: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1179
Author's Summary: The awfulness of being Amelia Song, aged 14.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Amelia Song (OC)
Warnings: Spoilers through the finale of S6

Recced because: There's nothing better than starting off a week with humor, so here is a story that is just marvelous fun from start to finish. Amelia Song, daughter of the Eleventh Doctor and River Song, is a wonderfully surly teenager with two parents who are surprised by her existence. The author sets up the ridiculous situation and then never misses a target or a joke, whether that target is parenthood, teenager-hood, or the timey-wimeyness of Series 6. Enjoy.

Story: The Places We’ve Been
Author: nostalgia
Word Count: 4,067
Author's Summary: In which Eleven and Romana have an exciting adventure.
Rating:all ages
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), Romana, River
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I adore it when when an author can successfully blend old and new Who, and this story does a lovely job of it. At first the story seems to skip lightly over the fallout from the Time War, but a careful read pulls a host of subtleties into Eleven and Romana’s interactions. But this fic turns truly wonderful when River is thrown into the mix.

Hello again!  Here is your rec of the day:

Story: ceci n'est plus qu'un conte de fée
Author: leiascully
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4085
Author's Summary: This is the story of two irresistible forces and an immovable universe.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River, Amy/Rory
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a lovely follow-up to "The Wedding of River Song." The prose is lyrical, and it's a very gentle, graceful story. It doesn't hesitate to touch on sadness, but the emphasis is on redemption, family, and joy. The fairy-tale/mythology allusions work wonderfully.  Plus, bonus Donna. How can you not love it?

Here's an excerpt for you:

Story: Our Own Brand of Domesticity
Author: DQBunny
Rating: R
Wordcount: 2063
Author's Summary: River Song would never be the Martha Stewart of the 51st century. Actually, she's quite convinced her cleaning crew has put a hit out on her. It really would explain so much.
Characters/Parirings: Eleven/River

An outrageous alien encounter, snappy sexy banter, and and affronted TARDIS = a scene of madcap domesticity between the Doctor and River Song. In honor of the finale!
[identity profile] avarill.livejournal.com
Story: Sealed With a Kiss
Author: PhoenixDragon
Rating: G
Word Count: 1390
Author's Summary: Just 31 minutes in which to clean up whatever mess he could - as he would be dead one minute after.

Recced because: This is a look behind the scenes in the Doctor's mind as he comes to grips with his imminent death in Let's Kill Hitler. The Doctor's thought processes are difficult to map out, but PhoenixDragon does a great job of capturing Eleven's near-death stream-of-consciousness. The Doctor's bravery in that episode impressed me, and this is a lovely counterpoint to it. Enjoy!

In celebration of the upcoming S6 finale, most of my fics are going to have an Eleventh Doctor slant to them -- I'd like to highlight some of the great work that's being done with Eleventy & Co.!

Story: Control
Author: Musedepandora
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3830
Author's Summary: There seemed to be no way out. There seemed to be no other option. Yet, the Doctor had to believe he always had a choice. So River gave him one.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River; Amy/Rory

Recced because: This is one of my go-to fics (why yes, there's a copy on my kindle). It's clever - sharp-as-a-tack clever. Like the very best of Doctor Who (professional or amateur) it careens wildly between hilarity, edge-of-your-seat action, pathos, and triumph.

Oh, I owe you guys two today as I missed yesterday? Okay then, First up is:

Story: The Space Race
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3261
Author's Summary: Stuck on Earth with River Song, the Doctor has to cope with domesticity and marriage. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River Song
Warnings: None
Recced because: I love "stranded" stories that reveal a shade of the Doctor's vulnerable side when he loses the TARDIS (or misplaces her, or has her very nicely carjacked, or stolen by weeping angels, etc). In this one, Eleven and River end up in 1950's Britain. The Doctor is determined and resourceful, and the loss of connection to the TARDIS only comes though in brief snapshots. He's definitely more at a loss on the domesticity front. River is just as frustrated as the Doctor at their predicament, and at the gender politics of the era, and at the outset she just sees the part where they have to play at being married as one hell of an opportunity. But the Doctor's not the only one whose vulnerabilities peek through at the edges of this story, and maybe they both need each other more than they let on.

Anyway, go read it; it's sweet, funny, and a bit naughty, with witty dialogue, a happy ending and a bit of world-saving on the side.

elisi: Edwin and Charles (Pimpin' by hauntes)
[personal profile] elisi
Hello all. *waves* I’m [livejournal.com profile] elisi (same name everywhere), and I’m going to be your reccer for this week. I’ve tried my best to assemble a varied list of fics that have made an impression on me one way or another (not easy to narrow down of course), and I think there should be something for everyone. Eleven does pop up a fair few times, but in such completely different contexts that I hope no one will mind.

I’m going to start off with my ‘If you read nothing else, read this!’ story:

Story: Timeless Dreams
Author: musedepandora
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5416
Author's Summary: "Every story is his story." A retelling of the Doctor and River Song's romance with magic and iPads. Written for an AU challenge.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, River Song, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is one of the best things I have ever read. Anywhere. At all. Musedepandora ([livejournal.com profile] cinderbella333 on LJ), is without a doubt one of the most talented writers I have ever had the fortune to come across, and what she has done in this story is sheer magic. It’s not your average AU – or rather, there is what could be termed an ‘average’ AU, but it is combined with another AU so mythical and beautiful that my words can’t do it justice. And the way these two complimentary stories entwine – as well as the way they call back to the show itself – is so masterly done that I am rendered mostly speechless. Sorry if I'm vague, but it is not easy to put across how different and lyrical this story is without quoting the whole thing.
[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com
It's almost time for the S6 premiere! Here's the perfect fic to read while you're counting down the hours:

Story: Make Believe
Author: musedepandora
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3269
Author's Summary: It didn't end in The Library. For either of them. (Eleven/River, Amy. Spoilers through Pandorica)
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Amy Pond
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a simple but brilliant premise: the Doctor sometimes takes the TARDIS back to orbit The Library so he can have conversations with the River he left there in the computer. The fic is a truly fascinating character study of the Doctor and River, and their very complex relationship with each other. River's status as a dead hologram is not shied away from, nor is the Doctor's fundamental discomfort around her -- and yet it completely works. The characterization is amazing, and the execution is perfect.

Greetings to all those who understand LJ far better than do I. I'm Merrythemad and I'll be reccing for you lot this week. It'll be an odd assortment of nuWho and classic with, perhaps, a bit of Torchwood thrown in good measure. I'm no good at LJ so please bear with me.

Story:The Time of Your Life
Author: Nostalgia
Rating:Adult
Word Count:1477
Author's Summary:In which loving someone in chronological order is for losers. (Eleven/River)
Characters/Pairings:11th Doctor/River Song
Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: Most of us assume that, at some point, the Doctor's mind changes in regard to River Song, this story delves into that mental switch and does so with a delicate touch that's as amusing as it is refined. The characterisations are spot-on and Nostalgia (the author) has The Doctor's mentality down to a "T". Also, please not, that though the warnings say explicit sex is involved it's nothing more than you might see on late-night Primetime network television.
