Rating: All ages
Word Count: 5,107
Author's Summary: Ian Chesterton and Wilfred Mott are friends through the years.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Wilf, Donna

Recced because: Why did it never occur to me that Wilf and Ian would be contemporaries? Thank goodness it occurred to Pendragon, though, or we wouldn't have this lovely story in which Ian and Wilf immediately bond and form a lasting friendship. The character voices are spot-on, and honestly, re-reading the story just now so I could write the rec still fills me with joy, even if there are occasional sad moments, just as there are in anyone's life. But those moments are that much easier to deal with when you have a friend who understands you – and fortunately, Ian and Wilf do.

Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Other Characters

Characters/Pairings: Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright
Authors's summary: Ian had planned a wonderful date for Barbara. There's just one problem- it's on a boat and Ian gets seasick.
Warnings: none

Recced because: Since the last fic I recced was a sad one, this rec is the opposite- a very happy moment of two companions living happily ever after, post-Doctor. This is an adorable piece of shippy Ian/Barbara fluff that captures their playful and loving relationship wonderfully. If you love Ian & Barbara, (and if you've seen any of their episodes you probably do!) then this fic is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and leave you feeling all warm & fuzzy! :D

Author: Meadowlark
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2779
Author's Summary: Ever wondered what it would have been like if Jane Austen had written for Doctor Who? Possibly it would have been something like this- here's the very first episode, re-written in the style of a Jane Austen novel.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: I recently saw this spot-on Austen parody of the opening scenes in "An Unearthy Child" and fell in love with it on the spot. I think it's a brilliantly executed cracky idea, and something I wouldn't mind seeing in more fanfic.

Story: Last Stop, White City
Author: Pendragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2,003
Author's Summary: Fifty years since returning home, Ian and Barbara recreate their first ever date.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian

Recced because: I've been catching up on Classic Who episodes I haven't watched before, which included most of Ian and Barbara's run. Their jubilant tour of London at the end of "The Chase" is one of the shippiest scenes I've ever seen, and I think it's completely fair for fic authors to treat that as the couple's first date, as Pendragon does here. Fifty years after Ian and Barbara returned to Earth in a Dalek ship, they re-visit all the places they celebrated that day: Trafalgar Square, the Thames Embankment, and even a city bus. It's a joyful, romantic story that left me as giddy as Ian and Barbara were, and hopefully will do the same for you.

Author's Summary: A pretty oblique Who story, about what happened to a certain history teacher thirty years after she stumbled, with a colleague, into a junkyard at 76 Totters' Lane.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: None

Recced because: Mysterious and subtle, oblique is an excellent way to describe it. Although definitely sad, it's an intriguing look at how life for Barbara would be after Ian died. It's not ground breaking or so shocking that it stays in the memory for a long time, but it's certainly sobering.

Story: Home Is Where the Journey Begins
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 662
Author's Summary: Home becomes an adventure of its own, their destination most unhoped for. Home is the place where they pause and look into each other’s eyes, knowing what they have lived, and what still lies ahead. Home is the most thrilling thing of all. A little Ian/Barbara character exploration, set post their departure in "The Chase."
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, River
Warnings: None

Recced because: One of the benefits of moderating the Teaspoon queue is getting to see great fic before anyone else on the site does, and I was especially pleased this one came my way; it's a story with rare sensitivity to language, and equal sensitivity to the relationship between the characters. Ian and Barbara's time on the TARDIS changed them, not just in how they perceive history and the world around them now that they're no longer traveling in time and space, but also in how they perceive each other. Adjustment to normal life is hard, but sharing it with someone you care about, and who knows what you've been through, makes it that much easier, and that much more wonderful.

Story: A benevolent abduction
Author: Lydia hunter
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4067
Author's Summary: Ian tells his children about how their mother saved him and Susan from a madwoman with the very best of intentions.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I needed something lighter after yesterday’s dark rec, and then I found this in my bookmarks. A whole alien culture is created within the space of a few thousand words, as well as a lovely domestic scene. The story is a heart-warming look at life for Ian and Barbara after their days in the TARDIS. It is also a great mini first doctor tale.

Ian and Barbara are often overlooked by younger fans like myself who started watching in or after 2005, and that is a great shame. The First TARDIS team might be nearly fifty by now, but that doesn’t make them any less brilliant. All four of them are perfectly characterised in this story, especially Ian is his wonderful self. The reactions of the children to their parents’ story are fun and utterly believable.

Story: Vermin in the Lower Zoo
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2138
Author's Summary: What if 'The Edge of Destruction' had marked the end of the Doctor's moral ambiguity in a different way, and his character had transitioned not into a hero, but a villain? One who demanded punishment for insubordination, and a price for ferrying two stowaways home.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Non-Con

Recced because: Anyone who knows me knows that I don't read fic with sex in because the sec never seems to be important. So you know this one must be good. In this case the sex isn't important - but that in itself is important. It is a horrifyingly dystopian AU, but there is something compelling about it, in the way that Ian and Barbara deal with the situation they find themselves in, that makes it hard to stop reading and harder to forget.

Recced because: With all due respect, there's nothing "just" about fluff! This is a lovely, quiet little moment for Barbara and Ian, and the tiny glimpse we get of the world they're on is really quite beautiful, the kind of thing a 1960s television effects budget wouldn't likely have been able to afford, no matter how far you stretched it. Story: Chasing Memories
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 15,080
Author's Summary: When Ian and Barbara return home in a Dalek ship, they're relieved to find it's the day they left. However, they soon find that a two year absence coupled with the dangers lurking around Coal Hill School means they're not going to be able to go back to their old lives that easily. AU from the end of The Chase.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Ace, Seven
Warnings: none

Recced because: I’m not always fond of AUs, unless they actually do something clever with the original source material. This definitely fits that bill. This story starts from one tiny tweak to canon - Ian and Barbara returning home on time, rather than two years later. Doesn’t seem like much, but there are major repercussions since they are two years older and removed from their previous lives, and these are interestingly explored in the story. And then there’s the fact Remembrance of the Daleks is about to happen at Coal Hill School... All of the characterizations in this story are great, and I especially love the Ian/Barbara romance, of course, but there’s also Ian and Ace making Nitro-9 together, and Ian and Barbara getting to help smash up some Daleks with Seven and Ace is always awesome times. It’s a long story, but definitely worth your time!

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. First off I’d like to apologise for this rather late entry – having opted to do this week I immediately realised it was the one where I’m out of the house every weekday from 9am to 6pm for my placement work – not I admit an unusual practice for everyone but as a student it is for me! Still, shouldn’t be too difficult to stick on some great Recs from as many eras as possible right? And to begin here’s a possible meeting between an old friend and a Doctor coping from loss, not all that long ago… And as always, please leave a kind word in the reviews if you liked it! :)

Story: Fireside
Author: TS Wheaton
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2883 Words
Author's Summary: Devastated after the loss of Donna, the Doctor, soaked from the pouring rain, seeks solace with an old friend, whom he hasn't seen in a very, very long time.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: Maybe a little pinch of Angst but nothing serious.

Recced because: For a number of reasons I love this short story – there’s a reunion with one of the first and best companions in its long history (and I seriously think that Steve should consider contacting the brilliant William Russell whilst he’s still with us) but more than that, it ties directly into the sombre, broken Doctor we’ve got directly after Journey’s End, and there's some of that on Ian's end too. There’s a range of nice subtle references to Ian’s past adventures with the original Doctor and as a change it’s written in a script format, which is a writing style I’ve often considered trying myself. I hope you enjoy it yourselves!

Recced because: It's amusing, the situation they're in and how long it takes Ian to catch onto it. And the suggestion at the end about how they might have come to be in that situation in the first place. It's also sweet and funny how Barbara and Ian both feel the same way about each other, but won't bring themselves to say it.

Warnings: None.

Recced because: I really like Eleven, and I've enjoyed the last couple serieses. But there's definitely some new canon coming up that has confusing implications for the old series (as usual, with Who). On the one hand, contradictions make for a somewhat dissonant viewing experience. On the other hand, it gives rise to fics like this one, which follow the implications to their natural conclusion.

Story: The Gentle Art of Seduction
Author: Pendragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1477
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara’s attempts at historical sexual role-playing don’t go quite according to plan.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: Only very mild sexual references despite the summary.

Recced because: This is an author who writes Ian and Barbara brilliantly and it shows, plus seeing the lives of the TARDIS Companions after their departure is always fun, particularly in light of Russell’s recent reveal into their lives in SJA’s Death of the Doctor. Plus it references all the various historical periods Ian and Barbara visited in a flirty humorous way. It was actually in this slot a tough pick between this and Pendragon’s other great Ian/Barbara fic ‘The TARDIS Meddler’, also worth a look. I would love to see this author do some more First Doctor era fiction in the future!

Author's Summary: "Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, Susan, One.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's unusual and lovely, an good Hartnell-era adventure with believable technobabble, wonderful characterisation and a great ending. Ian and Barbara are the focus of this story and their trust in each other is the underpinning of this story, but Lurky McLurklurk also captures the way the First Doctor could be both a powerful, frightening alien and a doddering old man, and the 'unearthly child' aspect of Susan.

Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara. Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor and Donna looking after a baby when neither of them quite know what to do is funny. It's the sort of story made more interesting by time travel, once we learn where the baby's come from. It's a good idea that I can see being canon.

Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Evelyn Smythe, Sixth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: There aren't many Evelyn stories and this is a particularly lovely one. The relationship between the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn is just right - exactly as it is in the audios. Evelyn and Barbara are two companions who should definitely meet, given their shared interest in history. It's fun to see the Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Ian and Barbara all interact.

Story: The Shadow of Joanna
Author: LinworthNewt
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4082
Author's Summary: Between their departure from the Forest of Jaffa during the Crusades, and their arrival at the Space Museum on the planet Xeros, the TARDIS jumped a time track, and the travelers forgot what happened in the intervening time. Something lost, and something gained, passed between Ian and Barbara.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Vicki, the First Doctor, Princess Joanna; Ian/Barbara
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: This is darker than the events you saw on screen, and goes deeper. The true fate of the historical figure Princess Joanna is paralleled with Barbara's story, and events from canon are given real and very human consequences. Dovetailing into the serials The Romans, The Crusade and The Space Museum, this fic seems to turn the world 90 degrees, and let you see it in a new light. To quote the fic itself, history is not always kind to its heroes and heroines.

Story: 1967, the Chestertons and all that
Author: catelfemma
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5287
Author's summary: 1967 was a lovely year for all sorts of reasons, and Captain Jack Harkness was pleasantly surprised to find two old friends of a Doctor he'd never known there as well.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ian Chesterton, background Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Owen Harper, Ianto Jones, Toshiko Sato, "Algy"
Warnings: none that I can think of, really

Recced because: One of the things I love about this fandom is that you can pick the most random pairings--characters that never even meet onstage--and someone somewhere has written a fic about it (and chances are, it'll be good too.) In this case, the improbable pairing is Jack Harkness with Ian Chesterton and catelfemma makes it work. Of course, it probably helps that Ian and Barbara are swingers. They're married in the fic and although it's not the main pairing, what we see of their relationship is very sweet. The main pairing itself is equally endearing, with Ian's nervousness at being with a man for the first time being gently soothed by Jack. (It probably helps that despite technically being a Torchwood crossover, Jack's portrayal in the fic is more in line with his less emo Doctor Who characterization.) The build-up might be slow, but it's in no way boring.

Characters/Pairings: Susan/David, Barbara/Ian, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to have a happy Susan ending, even if it starts at the beginning with a crash landing in a junk yard. This does have a bit of a fractured style to it, but I feel like that adds to the story. This is an interesting look at Susan as she lives her life and deals with some of the consequences of other people messing with time.

Word Count: ~1,500

Recced because: This is a terrific example of a remix that really works. The original is Tigerkat's excellent Listening (previously recced on Calufrax here). This story is a wonderful, lovely take on the original, teasing out different aspects and full of lightness and love. The different POVs on display – the TARDIS' in particular, but also little Johnny and Tegan's – are perfectly done, and the story is full of great little details, like the TARDIS' joy at the new life being created inside her, the moon landing get-together/reunion (especially "Aunt Dodobird"!), and even the Inferno gets a mention. It's touching and terrific work.

The little soupcon of Ian/Barbara shippiness in the mix is wonderful (and doesn't render it non-gen in the slightest IMO, given how present the same sort of thing is in the canon), and somehow it's particularly nice to see Vicki used in a fic like this -- she's not in it much but [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook nails her characterisation perfectly, giving the lie to the idea that she's a bit of a cookie cutter Susan replacement.

Story: Le Temps Retrouvé
Author: Melengro
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 469
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara, walking home.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Warnings: None, unless you don't know how Ian and Barbara leave the Doctor.

Recced because: The author describes the Ian/Barbara couple as "sickly-sweet", and they are, in a good and satisfying kind of way, the kind of couple that's impossible to break up cos they seem so perfect together. This is Ian/Barbara exploring that old trope "pretend we got married" and making it warm and believable and very very good.

Story: Cartographers
Author: [livejournal.com profile] calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2892
Author's Summary: Former companions during the latest invasion. (Set during tSE/JE.)
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Polly Wright/Ben Jackson, Ancelyn/Winifred Bambera
Warnings: none given

Recced because: This is a great shapshot of some Classic companions as the Daleks are at it again in tSE/JE. The pacing and characterization are stellar; it's insightful, funny, and ultimately delves into what being the Doctor's influence is really about. This has sailed straight into my personal canon.

And yet another inadvertently matching rec:

Story: Watching from the Wardrobe
Author: yesjamie [*]
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 700
Author's Summary: Susan's curious. She watches.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Susan
Warnings: Explicit Sex (and, specifically, voyeurism)

Recced because: I wanted to rec something from the kink meme in my week, and this is a fabulous story, which captures the feel of the Hartnell era despite being porn, and has an interesting take on Time Lord sex in there as well.

[*] yesjamie is (apparently) a collective of kink meme anons (but for all we know it may just be one prolific one!) posting to the Teaspoon from a shared account; I'd just like to point out that they're completely unofficial - I don't know their password and I don't want to.

Story: Fall Into the Sky
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1979
Author's Summary: Darkness falls around Barbara, dawn rises, rain caresses the turf, and she thinks of the man who had seen all the wonders of the cosmos and then whispered in her ear that she, a drab middle-aged history teacher, was the most brilliant star in the sky.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton
Warnings: Character Death

Recced because: This is one of the most beautifully poetic stories I've read in this fandom. It also manages to be both incredibly sad and incredibly uplifting at the same time. Not an easy feat. It's a character study of Barbara, and what became of her and Ian after leaving the Doctor.
